There's no way to be witty about this. What we have here is a country band who sings about doing drugs. There's no apparent talent that shines through, no interesting moments, nothing that jumps out to grab you. I'm sure this CD would get great rotation on your local country station. I'm sorry, this CD is just not good. Every song sounds the same.

The difference between this CD and mainline country stars is that they generally have a nice quality to their voice (even though I can't stand the way country singers sing). The vocals on this CD aren't really on. Her voice is much too wavery and never really holds a pitch, like she's trying to sing country, but just can't quite cut it. The guitars play tired country riffs and basic chords. The bass plays cliché bass lines. The strings don't ever do anything special. Despite not knowing how to play the drums or string instruments, I could've written this album and played everything on it. That's how devoid it is of musical talent.

I mentioned ealier how the songs are all about drugs. Out of 9 songs, only 2 of them are devoid of references to binge drinking, cocaine, or marijuana. The lyrics from the last song follow every line with "get high tonight." The last line from the song is "Let's go down to Fifth and Tenth and buy some crack and smoke that shit. Snort some coke and do some pills 'cause I wanna kill myself." That's too bad you feel this way, and it's also too bad that you don't have anything better to write songs about.

The best part about this album is that it's short. There are only 9 songs and most clock in at 2 minutes or under. This CD just enforces why you shouldn't listen to country music.

    My Score:

"This CD just enforces why you shouldn't listen to country music. "

Reviews should be assigned to people who can listen to music objectively. This review shouldn't have been assigned to someone who has an affinity for heavy music and obviously dislikes the genre.

    My Score:

I just discovered this band and think this record and their next record "Leaving the Nightlife" are really really really good. I agree with the people below who critique this shallow review, though I don't wish the AIDS truck on Jesse. (AIDS truck? Wow!)

I've never seen them live, I hope they're not always as lifeless as mentioned below on stage.

    What a fucking absurd review.

Did this doucheshit just call the Weakerthans alt-country? I hope you get gagged with Britney Spears' baby's umbilical cord you clueless bitch.

    My Score:

Man, just in case no one else picked up on this...the kid who reviewed this album tries to vindicate himself of his ignorance of "alt-country" by citing the Weakerthans and Hank III, a couple of the triendiest bands of all time, neither of which are "alt-country." If jesse listened to Hank Williams the first I might see him as something other than a 16-year-old douchebag spouting nothingness on an anonymous board. Sort of like this here 21-year-old doing the same. But at least I listen to the REAL Hank. And Rumbleseat. Fuck you jesse for not knowing your roots. And fuck the 99% of underground bands that are bandwagon-jumping capitalists...unlike Rumbleseat. Buy this album. Sincerely, unregistered anonymous.

Bad review, and you would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for that pesky last line...
"This CD just enforces why you shouldn't listen to country music."

You can't put down a whole genre just because you don't like one band. I've never heard Whiskey & Co, but you obviously came in with a biased opinion, so your review is worthless to me.

If you're looking for some good non-commercial country music, check out bloodshot records.

checked out the mp3....that's not nearly as bad as was described. sure it's country but it's not horrible like was described.

    My Score:

Eh, I like my fair share of country music, but when they opened for Against Me! they were just bad live. Might have been an off night, who knows.

    My Score:

    bad review.

this was more of a rant about how you hate country music or lyrics about drugs than it seemed to be an open review of the cd. the points you made could be made easily about many many bands who get rave reviews like bad religion(repetitious, cliché riffs).

basically, you didn't sell it to me that you actually approached the record non-biased and actually open as far as reviewing it.

"while drugs are merely the impetus for or attempted escape from that alienation."

Jesus, you're retarded. I already said exactly what you were complaining about, bitch.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, February 9, 2004 at 1:42 AM (EST)
    My Score:

Maybe they feel alienated because they're fucking drug addicts. Being a drug addict is fine, as long as you don't write every song about it. I'm going to stick with my score, thank you.

This score is for junkies who write songs that aren't about being junkies.

    My Score:

I'd like to point out that this was one of my favorite records of last year. I think they do country music pretty damn well, their songs are catchy and the gal's voice is extremely pretty. Difference in opinion, I guess. I'm also not a big druggie but holy crap is it annoying that you spent 1/4 of your review discussing that lyrical aspect. The songs are actually about alienation while drugs are merely the impetus ("High Life," "Pills (Crushed Up)") or attempted escape ("High Tonight," "Barroom Women") from that alienation. Too bad you missed that when you were crying about drugs because it means you missed an incredible record.

Posted by dazed on 2004-02-08 00:12:12
    My Score:

Yeah, this band is boring live, they opened for Against Me! and sucked it up for far too long. They don't change up tempos or song structures at all, and the singer just sings about doing drugs like she invented the concept. I have no intention of buying this.

Posted by Edgie on 2004-02-07 22:35:02
    My Score:

I saw them open for Hot Water Music a while back. They were awful. No crowd interaction whatsoever. The singer stood in one spot and song, the band didn't move in the slightest. In short, they completely failed their job as an opening band. They failed in general as a band when I saw them. They were absolutely boring, and the best part about seeing them were the chances to make fun of them.

Call me a dumb punk kid if you like, I don't really care. I know what I like and what I dislike, and I most certainly dislike Whiskey & Co.

saw this band open for against me! and i could hardly agree more with the review...they simultaneously bored me to tears and depressed me to frequent watch-glancing
i guess it at least has a good message to it: don't do drugs unless you want to make shitty, depressing country music like this (personally i don't understand the alt-country description several posts down)
if you want good country, listen to Hank Williams, Sr., Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Hank III (for some newer stuff), or just listen to the man that basically started country music, Jimmie Rodgers

And Emmylou Harris (oops! you spelt her name wrong!) has talent as singer. This lady cannot hold a pitch.

Before you call me a dumb "punk" kid who has no interest in "alt-country," please educate yourself on the reviewer. If I didn't like "alt-country," then how would you explain the fact that my favorite band is The Weakerthans? Not proof yet? How about the fact that I listen to Hank Williams the III on a general basis? I don't judge music based on it's genre. I judge it based on whether or not it sucks. This CD sucks. This band displays no talent in songwriting, lyrics writing, performance, or singing. Please don't let angry idiots with bad taste in music sway your opinion. And please refrain from calling me a "punk kid." I hate that word, just like I hate the term "emo." Punk is a joke of a music genre. Please, go buy some good music. This score is for me having a better taste in music than you.

hey look, a dumb punk kid who obviously has no interest in alt-country trashes a record because it falls outside of his listening boundries. Get hit by the AIDS truck. This record smokes. Very laid back and breezy, awesome "front porch music". It reminds me alot of Drag the River's "Hobo Demos", but with vocals that are very Emylou Harris. Fantastic record.
