Reviews

Hello readers. I know you came here expecting a review for the new Casualties album, “On The Front Line,” but I have something even better. My associates have retrieved the one and only copy of the journal the band members kept during the recording and writing of the album, enjoy!

Tuesday

7:00 am-Got up to style hair, talked about who we saw at the supermarket the other day. I believe hairstyles are important part of being in a punk rock band, if you ain’t sportin’ the liberty spikes ya might as well be listen’ to The Dashboard Confessionals, or whatever shit ya kids today are passin’ off as the punx. I get sick to my stomach every time I see these bands we’re on Warped Tour with, those fashion obsessed little fucks don’t know anything about upping the punx, it’s a shame. They’re more concerned about fashion than the music! Someone used all my conditioner, now my hair has no volume, I can’t work under these conditions!

3:00 pm-Finished with hair, working on the musix. Wrote the songs “Intro” and “On The Frontline” I wrote these songs after I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and the cheese tasted funny, you can hear my anger in the lyrics. You may think the repeated screaming of “Casualties Army!” and “on the frontline” is about the events in the world. You couldn’t be more wrong. This is about taking a stand against substandard dairy products. Up the quality! The song “Leaders of Today” was originally going to be used in a training video for future Denny’s managers. The repetitive shouting reflects the struggles of the common man against the astonishing lack of random shouting we see in society. It’s time we took a stand! We wrote “Tomorrow Belongs To Us” because being the leaders of today isn’t an easy goal to reach, so in case that falls through we added this one. Notice that the chorus sounds identical to all the other choruses, this is meant to reflect unity. Up the unity!

5:00 pm-Rented Punky Brewster on DVD at the local Blockbuster. This documentary has clearly changed our lives. The way it portrays a young girls struggle in the male dominated world of punk rock is a true inspiration. What? It’s a kid show? No, it can’t be because, you see… Ah fuck!

7:00 pm began writing music. Before we began writing I wanted to incorporate some Latin rhythms and some sound manipulation, but our spiritual advisor informed us that this wasn’t the punx, and that those fucking pussies in Mercury Voltas or whatever fucking do that shit. Our hair is better. So with that out of the way we decided that we’d play the same chords really fast, and that would carry our message. I’m sick of getting albums with songs I don’t like, so I had a great idea. We’ll make all the songs sound the same, this way it will be like one really long song. I’m a genius.

8:00 pm I made some vegan pork chops for the band. Since we were short on time we had our picture taken for the album’s cover right after we ate. As you can see, half the band is suffering from indigestion, while the other half is so full they could barely stay awake! Up the Maalox!

I hope you enjoyed this look into the writing process of this band, maybe this will give you new insight when you hear the album.

    My Score:

I'm not really sure where the hate for The Casualties come from. Yes, I realize they definetaly are not lyrical geniuses, and they aren't to deep. But they obviously love what they're doing, and they obviously love punk rock.

Like someone said earlier, these guys have been playing punk for 15 years or so, and they're still going. I once saw an interview with the lead vocalist, and he was talking about how they're in this band because they want to unite different scenes, and punk is their passion. They aren't in it just to look cool, they're actually do this because they want to.

I realize punk rock has changed a lot over the years, but it's obvious these guys like playing street punk. But those are just my observations and opinions.

wow all you cunts are pretty dumb take a history lesson, punk rock is GENERIC, punk rock is JUVERNILE, punk rock is made to sound like crap, and the only ones giving "fashion statement" wannabes outthere a chance to "be" punk would be all the fucking commercial bands that claim to be punk. Half you tools need to pull your head out of your ass and maybe think. "hmm im i dont like punk rock its to generic for my taste, the sound is terrible maybe i should go listen to some barbie party mix or some shit" if you dont like it fuck off and its always been about the music tarts

All i want to say to all of you is that, after you were born, you didnīt started walking at once, you first needed to crawl, right?
well, iīm more into crust/ street punk scene, and i like to hear bands like Crucifix, Nausea, Aus Rotten some The Unseen and the likes, but i didnīt get to that music at once, i first started listening to NOFX, Anti-Flag and specially The Casualties.
I really think The Casualties lyrics arenīt very complex, very generic, and poor at times, but they do a great job into getting more and more kids into the scene, kids who will then listen to other bands with more elaborated lyrics, but they needed to crawl first. Also their message of unity amongst punks had never changed from the beginning. Now they have launched a new album, "Under Attack" on Sidonedummy Records, i donīt like it very much, but itīs still fast and loud and surely will get new people into punk rock.
i liked more "Die Hards" anyways ;-).
The same goes for the ones that say that Anti-Flag now is very commercialized, and has signed to a mayor label, well they had admitted it, in that way more and more people will listen to their message, they may be "socialist oriented" but i think what they say in their lyrics is true, and is a good band to get kids into listening to good music with good thoughts into its lyrics.
    Just think about it.

    My Score:

i don't really see why everyone hates this album so much. yes, there isn't a genius lyric throughout the whole album, almost all of the rhythms are identical. but in the end, it's how much you like the sound, not what it revolves around. i think it's an enjoyable cd... nothing genius, nothing earth-shattering, just a fun little romp.

yeah, casualties army is a great song, cuz there's no vocals. There old stuff IS better. why arent there any reviews on that stuff? now i do have to say, unknown soldier and tomorrow belongs to us are pretty good songs. and the album itself isnt that bad. its just their older stuff is so much better.

im sick of people sayin bands older shit is better because that is nowhere near the case with the casualties unknown soldier and casualties army are probably their best songs to date. by the way that journal was pretty funny

    My Score:

I fucking despise the Casualties, not because they are a bad band (good musicianship, horrible lyrics), but because they are giving poser ass fashion punks a reason to exist. I bought this alblum because a friend recommended it to me...... I always hated how the Casualties talked about "being punks", and this alblum doesn't signify any change in their music. It is rare for them to talk about real problems that plauge society, but when they do address any social issue, it is so generalized that it can be applied to almost anything. I was thoroughly bored with this record and it left nothing to be desired...... The Casualties are immature and need to grow up.

Bands make musci, wehter it is for financial profit, mental security or just artistic expression. Let them do what they do, reviews should not be in existance. sinc eits all about opinions, it shouldnt matter if they're good or not. you either liek them or you don't. its great that they have a fan base, its great that they have people who hate them. i know i'm using this review, and i'm a hyppocrit for doing so. i'd like to let you know, They want to play music. i'll let them play it. If i was going to start a band and play music, i wouldnt want peopel to feel the same way. liek it or not, the casualties play music, just liek any other band. its their version fo music, and every other band playes their own version of music. so stop with the negativity, stop writting here telling everyone how awsome the album is, and just listen to music and have a good time with it. music is here to inspire, its here to agress, its here to create moods that otherwise wouldnt exist. it compels us, so we should respect it, in any of its forms.

Posted by Smithy on 2005-03-16 14:19:11

Ok, first of that review was goddam funny. However:

    1. It's kinda annoying that less than half the review was spent talking about music.

2 There's a brilliant hypocricy here: the anti-casualties people talk shit about them because they apparently care so much about the image, yet they are the ones judging them on their apperence. Here's an idea; listen to the music. If you don't like it, fair enough. It doesn't make you cool to talk shit about a punk band.

    3. The traditional punk image is mohawks etc. So because of this, NOBODY is allowed to fit that image as that means they're posers? If they want to style their hair that way why shouldn't they.

As for the album, personally I quite like it. I gave it a 7 because although it is a good listen, as you did say it is quite repetetive.

this is a great record, but people picking on them coz of their hair is stupid. listen to the music people. just coz you listen to vinyl, or cd's, just coz your hair is in spikes and green ora fo-hawk(ehh!) doesn't mean you have any right ot be an elitest piece of shit. stop over analyzing music and let rock n roll be rock n roll. whether someone does something for fashion or for the love of the music they still none the less do it because they want to do it! end of story. posers? maybe. outdated? maybe again, but punk rock elitest bullshit has been a constant ethical struggle for show goers for decades, just appreciate music for what it is or ignore it!

Sorry i rate the casualties a 10 for being reblious and not giving a fuck wat we care. The casualties r a great band. They old stuff was better tho but they r still kicking live. They influnced me to listen to punk music. Now me and friends have a band my band is between the casualties and a rancid. The casualties r great and in my opinion they r street punk itz more than the colthes. I have looked up there history and found some amazming stuff. U should try. But the casualties 'for the punx' vinyl u seen the cover welll they r street punk and i havent heard them i the radio. They use to be underground. And for a fact there cd's dont sound the same. U probably got brain damage. The casualties influened me to be anti and now i dress street punk and i am proud. But i will not dis emo because they have thier own thing going. But plz dont call ur self punk ur not. Punks r anti evrything and ur not soooo. (think about it) also rember old school punkrock made emo music. Emo is new school punkrock.

Saw them they were not that great. Singer just fuckin stood there. Lyrics suck, riffs are boring, and laughably dumb. 3 good songs in over a decade is not a good thing and all there albums sound exactly alike. Oh and from my perspective i would be willing to say fuck the punks if the singer would shut the fuck up about punx and skins on the street, punx and skins unity and stop the lame attempt at Oi! chants. Money would be better spent on the new templars cd kids.

    My Score:

I saw them live a while ago, and while they were outclassed by the opening bands, I did notice the bass playing and drumming of this band are quite solid, even if they only have about 2 tempos.

Score's for their live show, if they play it's probably worth seeing if it's not too expensive and the other bands are good.

Just don't get caught up in the merch circus.

    first off, funny review.

anyway, the casualties are ok. i own 3 of their albums, and i don't listen to them. there are 3 songs that stand out to me, "get off your back" "fight for your life" and "nightmare" those are decent songs. but the casualties are nothing special, they never were. same shitty lyrics to the "same fucking song" over and over. but....they put on one hell of a live show. fucking crazy. and that is what makes the casualties standable.

    maybe, lose the hair?

    My Score:

It doesn't matter if these kids LOOK "hardcore" because your not llooking at them when you listen to this.THis band has recycled the same riff over and over for years and put as much thought into their lyrics as a six year old. They understand that if you look "punk" you'll sell the records to the kids and they continue to put little to no effort in their music cause they'll sell the albums anyway. They are trying too hard to emulate their heroes from the 80s and doing a shitty job at it too.

Im not a 14 year old kid that has never heard a record played. I used to have alot of records cause most of the bands i listened to only put out records. I have heard the argument that records sound better but I have never heard, I'm not saying it doesnt, I'm saying my ears must not be that sensitive. But that wasnt my point in the first place. It was that putting something on a record doesnt make it diy, and putting something on a cd doesnt stop something from being diy, I just want to know how you can press your OWN records, I would figure you would have to pay someone to do it. And im not being a musical snob when i say this but how wide of a spectrum do bands like this have? I dont think anyone is gonna argue that this is complex music, I'm not putting it down, But it is simple music and if im not wrong thats the point there fans are trying to make, they arent doing anything new and they arent playing anything complex but they do what they do well so if someone likes oe dislikes it who cares. I think the least "punk" thing you can do is take your opinions and set them in stone against what other people think.

I know many people don't like this band, but the band has been around for almost 15 years now. They must be doing something right and that is called tour tour tour!!! It shows you that all the hard is paying off for these guys as well as other bands who work as hard they do. Their music repetitve but I can never get sick of them. That is just me. We all have our own taste in what we like and there is no need to bash for liking something you don't like, If you don't like a band then just don't bother telling the whole world if you don't like them, because there are always going to be other who like the bands that you hate. In the end it's just all music."

What does the format you buy your music on make it diy or not. This band isnt so diy, they are on a label. But a band on cd can be just as diy, if i burn a cd of my band and sell I just made a diy cd. Id say its more punk to sell cds cause its much cheaper and easier to do yourself so you can pass the savings on to the buyer. To me saying records are what makes something diy is as stupid as saying 8tracks are punk. "I'm so punk cause i prefer my music on outdated formats" oi to the 3rd power

They are out playing music and seeing the world while people like us are bitching about whats punk and whats not. If you like them or not they have been around for a long time and are dedicated to punk music. I personally think its better for kids to get into this band other than N.F.G. at least this will get a new comer thinking about whats going on. Also there are people saying they sold out, yet you also say everything they play sounds the same. I think if they changed their sound, that would make them sellouts. But they have not. They still continue to play fast aggressive punk, the way it's supposed to be.

A lot of you people don't even know what punk is. I've been reading some of the most ridiculous comments ever. Punk isn't and music, so someone can still listen to Dashboard Confessional and be punk as all hell. The reason punk is dead now is because it became all about fashion and not about the lifestyle and that's when the skins put punk in it's place: the fuckin' ground. Don't get me wrong, I love punk music, but it's more of a lifestyle than anything. Ice T said something like this "Punk isn't what you wear, it's not music. If two white suburbanite kids walk into a record store and say 'Hey, I want the new Mobb Deep album.' That's fuckin' punk rock" Was Ice T in a punk band? No he wasn't; but him saying that really impresses me.

I used to like the Casualties until I realized I would have been paying twenty dollars over and over for the same album. Tell me the difference between, 'For the Punx' and 'Underground Army', between 'Die Hards' and 'Stay Out Of Order'. There is none. They use the same goddamn chords and the say the same goddamn thing over and over again. 'We are true punks, because we sniff glue and drink and spike our hair and our parents kicked us out and I'm an ugly bastard.'
Who actually gives a shit anymore?

I've been a fan of this band since "For The Punx" and I must say this their best work since then. I really enjoy this album a lot. In the end it's just all music.

    Wow.

In case you guys didn't notice, the comments about the "Dashboard Confessionals" etc. were a jab at the people who say "if you don't like band x then you must listen to band y! Hurr hurr u aren't punk!" Most of the Casualties fans who commented did nothing but made themselves look like jackasses. Thanks for backing up my snide remarks, you did it a lot better than I could have.

"If you don't like the casualties, you're definitley not gonna like the Subhumans' new live album on Fat"
That doesn't make any sense. Two completely different bands. Two pretty different styles of punk, if you want to get right down to it. The Subhumans use quirkier song structures.
Also, reading a lot of these responses, it sounds like a lot of you think that the Casualties are the litmus test for "real" punk. What planet are you on? Not liking one band, whether it's the Casualties, Misfits, Ramones, Radicts, Subhumans (either Canadian OR UK), whatever, doesn't negate the rest of someone's preferences. I love a lot of 81 UK-style punk and oi- which is what y'all seem to be talking about when you mention "real punk"- but The Casualties don't do it for me. Am I a "poseur" because I love The Exploited "Punks Not Dead", Chaos UK, and The Business but don't like the new Casualties cd? Duh.
Third, what's with all the wuss anonymous posters. Stand behind for your opinion, don't be a lazy coward.

This band is worse than Wang Chung and ICP combined.

I also want to lynch anybody who likes this band.

    OI OI OI"
I want to go back in time and lynch your mother before your dad has chance to knock her up.

Fans of Mars Volta are similar to the annoying douche bags that enjoy this band. In the fact that they are both annoying douche bags that like to follow the current trends of todays hipster youth cult breeding ground.

For some reason they take stereotypical roles and follow the tastes of whatever character they choose to deem themselves. And then you have to see them argue moot points about shitty and overrated bands.

I'd rather watch Nascar and have a mullet than listen to you people moan and bitch about which you see as superior, nay I'd rather be hit by a bus and sodomized by old people than listen to you people talk in real life. Atleast over the internet I don't have to see your ugly fucking soon to be cadavers.

Which brings me to my conclusion, I wish I could vomit up your anus, tie you up with some of your other hipster friends and leave you to die of humility at some sort of raver orgy. But these are only my necrohomoerotic fantasies.

All in all, I was a little disappointed in the review, sure it was funny for a few seconds, but it was a little too cliche. Hating the Casualties is a little too easy, and a little too cool these days. They are what they are, they're not trying to reinvent the wheel or anything, but I think they take a lot more shit than they really deserve. For one, they really aren't that bad of musicians, quite talented on their instruments actually. They're just playing what they want, what they like, give them a break. That said, I'm not the biggest fan, don't own a single album by them, but can respect them for doing what they do.

C'mon, you have to give Jorge some credit. His first language is Spanish. I'm not saying he would be writing award-winning poetry if all the songs were in Spanish, but I'm sure the language accounts for some of it. And all the talk about how they're not talented? Rick pulls off Freeman-esque basslines that explode along with Meggers' unbelievable drumming. Jake ain't too bad a guitar either. And Jorge has the most original voice in music today (even if it isn't the best, it's still unique). The only flaw I see in them is the lyrics but when was punk rock about insightful lyrics ex: "I wanna be anarchy", "Sex and Violence", "Gabba Gabba Hey", "I ain't no god damn son of a bitch."

Funniest review on this site before.

No one is forcing you to accept this writers opinion, I thought it was a funny review and done in a clever way.

    all you kids are losers.
and all the casualties do suck.
and so do all the punkcore bands.
    yes, all of them.
and you kids just sit here spouting out cliche punk phrases, like nazi punks fuck off. youre all just as cliche as the casualties are.
    FUCK that.
p.s. the 10 is for me, not the review

"they fucking say "punk" 3429346 times per record. The Punkulties with their new album "On the punk line"

Dude that was the dumbest thing i've ever heard. How long did that take you to think of? 2 seconds. If you're going to try to make fun of a band at least make it good.

the casualties are usually really over rated, glad to see an accurate rating for once. now if only someone rated f-minus for what they are (over rated)

there's nothing wrong with a little lack of musical talent...for the most part that's how punk rock started

but that was 27 years ago, things have changed

not to mention, even if your music sounds like shit you should be able to write a song or two
