Funeral For a Friend were one of the most hyped bands of 2003, their two EPs Between Order and Model and Four Ways to Scream Your Name caused expectations to soar for this, their debut album. Was the hype worth it?

*cheap* Rushed? i really like this record but Hours is the stuff they really want to do. this record was rushed, still good, but rushed. one of the sickest albums ever and if u don't think so you obviously don't know shit and you probably should'nt be lookig around on this site I know im a bit late in reviewing this cd but it is one that is hard not to... I have to say that this album was amazing. Funeral for a friend really shows how to mix scream and rock with wonderful melodic tones. I already owned FFAF EP Seven ways to scream your name. And Casually dressed was set to come out on june 13th but i happen to find a used copy at my local music store. After 2 or 3 listens i find the cd to be excellent not a classic by any means but its deffinatley worth buying and is a pretty decent product for it to be their first full length. The lyrical content isnt super catchy or clever however their singer makes up for it with his high pitch crooning and their instrumental break downs are incredible. The album is a little more pollished and less hardcore then the ep but i guess i didnt mind because im not a huge hardcore fan. Anyway having said all of this I think its great to see a band thats not from america gaining some cred in america. Lets hope this band can continue to fill expectations in the future . I saw Funeral last weekend, I have to defend these guys. Their set was outstanding, got everyone going and their talent is unbelieveable. They did 'My Revolution' and it was so beautiful, when you hear this song live, you finally know why this band is where they are today. I met the guys after the show and they're the nicest bunch in the whole world, they haven't got chips on their shoulders or anything. At one point Matt Davies said to me 'I don't know what all the fuss is about i'm only from wales.' These guys need to be respected for what they do. "You just get so many assholes on this board who don't know their ass from their elbow trying to look cool...kinda like the guy below me here." Youth Of Today & Turmoil both blow. Really really hard. I was actually quite psyched on this band thanks to the early singles, then they seemed to get more and more watered down, nothing new to say in any of their songs (musicly that is, i could give a flying one about the lyrics), then i got the album and within about a week i was done on it. Shame,i thought they were gonna be much better. Hi, I'm in a band, but I won't mention the name in case anyone decides to buy our record, which is only available on vinyl. It features no less than 100 songs in under 5 minutes and only 2 copies have ever been made because I am sooooo fucking hardcore. This band were ok...then I heard the production job on this album. Absolutely horrible, this score is for the production. To the guy I critscised for his emo posturing - sorry man, I was kinda outta line. You just get so many assholes on this board who don't know their ass from their elbow trying to look cool...kinda like the guy below me here. Why don't we listen to 'real' hardcore? OK, this may be a generalisation but emo became popular because it had all the intensity and emotion of hardcore, which people liked and respected, but a lot of people couldn't listen to cos it had nothing even slightly resembling a fucking TUNE. Some people like music that is easy on the ear too y'know. THAT'S why we like emo (I think) How about this, funeral for a faggot can suck my dick. They are god awful - I wish I could put out music that sounded like a UK clone of from autumn to ashes, oh wait...no i don't - cuz they suck too. Why don't all you fags listen to real hardcore, like harvest or integrity or turmoil - or maybe even Youth of today, ever heard of them??? I swear to god, bands like funeral for a friend are the reason hardcore is full of nu metal kids and emo scenester pussies. I'm sick of hearing about the latest "emo/screamo/metalcore" craze...I suggest you get back to the roots of where this shit was unfortunatley born: Everyone click this link and then the number it tells you to click. dude, i wasn't name-dropping to be cool, i mentioned those bands because they're truly the greatest examples of the 'hardcore emo' subgenre. they made some incredibly great music that is still beautiful and relevant to this day, BUT nobody's ever heard of them because they didn't have the promotion that bands like funeral for a friend or thursday have today. they started the movement that's been watered down over the past decade into stuff called "extremo" or whatever. just try to look at stuff like funeral for a friend and the ten thousand other bands like them that have came out in the past couple years and acknowledge that nothing new or original is being done there. words like 'screamo' and 'extremo' are in the punk/whatever vernacular ONLY because music critics use them. they still make me (and pretty much everyone i know who's heard them) gag. if you know rites of spring and braid, then great, you know what emo was and should be remembered for being, and if you appreciate those bands and what they stood for, don't let them be associated with the style now called 'emo', that has nothing to do with the emo of 1994. Hey, I wrote 'extremo' cos that's what a whole bunch of people call this stuff. They were on the front cover of NME with 'kings of extremo' beside their name. It's a stupid word, but so is screamo or MTVmo or whatever you want to call it. Unfortuantely, it's now part of the vernacular so I used it in case we had some NME readers online. did you say 'extremo'? you jackass. Joe Juneau rocked when he played for Boston. He still holds the record for most assists by a left winger in a season. 'bands named after elton john songs aren't punk.' ok so you actually said you liked 4, my bad.. but you did also say"I can't decide which version I prefer, but most would say the original is better just because it's the cool thing to say." you said that you only liked about 2 or 3 songs at most, really only 1, but you gave it 7 stars?? 'bands named after elton john songs aren't punk' Nah brah. Melodic hardcore could be Good Riddance or Strike Anywhere. Emo metal is... Yeah, I guess I don't know. This is a great review, ive gotta totaly agree with everything said, even down to which song versions are better, im lovin the EP versions, but the new versions are jus as goos but lost some o the screamin which i think makes em! but.. people got thier own tastes.. mate love the new versions... Emo Metal = Melodic Hardcore? No I see what you're saying. I did screw that up, but this doesn't mean its not a bad review, because it is. dude, the American release was Seven Ways to Scream your name, and was a combo of the Order and Model and Four Ways to Scream Your Name eps, which were released in England. Don't correct if you don't know what you are talking about. Ok, first off their e.p. is called "Seven Ways To Scream" which to me was an amazing album. I usually don't like this kind of music, but for some reason that cd really grew on me. This review is pretty bad if you ask me. I'm not going to get all butt hurt about it, but I will say that maybe you should leave it to people who have a little more to say. You told nothing to the people that have never heard this band. I'm not trying to be a dick, but either don't write reviews or spend some time on them. bands named after elton john songs aren't punk score's for the review...save song-by-song analyses for amazon.com user reviews. Buy Desert City Soundtrack's Funeral Car instead. This is generic emocore with *surprise* poor lyrical content. This disc really came off to me as just decent/good modern rock, really. That is awesome cover art. I was really into this band when they came out, now they just seem average and the disc has collected dust. terrible band. "Escapse Artists Never Die" and "She Drove Me To Daytime TV" weren't re-recorded, you fucking moron. |
