You're in a band called Jackass. What do you think you sound like?

If you guessed "surprisingly good and incredibly fun cow-punk," you'd be right.

Featuring ex-members of Bad Religion and Ill Repute, Jackass is an anomaly in the punk scene - a band that obviously has it's tongue firmly in cheek, yet they're talented enough to pull this stuff off. This high-octane disc is a party from the opening lines of "Country," with singer Toby Emery crooning "Darlin', you put the cunt in country." It's ridiculous, yet somehow it works.

Over the course of the disc, the band attempts covers of both Madonna's "Music" and the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way." For any other band this would be the kiss of death, but I'll be damned if I don't find myself picking "Music" as the album's standout track. This band brings a vibe never present in the original versions to these recordings, and it just kicks the "super happy fun time" element of this disc up a notch.

I don't mean to discount the band's original songs, either - they are entertaining and well constructed, for your basic punk-country hybrid. Not every one of them is a winner, but enough are for me to recommend you checking this album out.

I was really hoping I'd dig the mp3 as I have taken a great liking to the line quoted from "Country", however I listened to the mp3 hoping I would be hearing either punk with an alt-country flair, or alt-country with a punk flair, which the song was not. "Cow-punk" as stated in the review is actually right on the mark; I suppose I should have expected that. My fault.

Eh. If I want country mixed with my rock I'll stick with the Supersuckers. This feels more like they're making fun of it. The samples on their site don't help matters either, those are not that good at all.
