Building from their success of their retardedly titled, but solid debut Light A Match For I Deserve To Burn (Marketing Director: “So this is really the album title?” Band: “Uh, yeah…” Marketing Director: “Hellooooooooo emo kids!”), The Beautiful Mistake return with an equally solid, equally average followup.

So what’s happened since the last record? Well, they've bought a slew of effects pedals, and they've been listening to a lot of Failure and Hum. I mean…a lot. I'll put it this way: in the liner notes they give thanks to a bunch of bands for "Friendship and Influence", the last four listed being Failure, Catherine Wheel, Elvis, and U2, all of whose influence shows up distinctly on the record (okay, maybe not Elvis, but you're getting the picture).

Asides from some muted hootin' and hollerin' in "Cold Hearts (For Tired Souls)" and some at the end of "A Safe Place" (which, for the record, is not as good as the demo version that initially appeared on the most recent Plea For Peace comp), there is virtually no more screaming on this ship anymore. What they have managed to do is craft a consistent, more spacey, rock leaning record. While the hooks are not that apparent, they really come out in repeated listenings. Songs like the title track and the first single (whose video is included on the CD. Well shot, but kinda lame…I seriously recommend checking out the video for “On Building” from their last record…that was brilliant) and the Snapcase-esque “A Friendly Committee” are extremely catchy tunes. “Wide and Wasted” and “Walking Wounded” mine from the Failure catalogue like nobody’s business. So much so that I keep waiting for Ken Andrews to start singing somewhere, even the lead guitar lines are extremely Failure-like. Honestly, the only reason I’m letting this go is a) they’re one of the better Failure rip off bands, and b) I really miss Failure. Nothing spectacular or original, yet it really seems like the guys spent a lot of time crafting these songs, adding different layers of atmospherics and textures to their sound. Plus the artwork, like on the debut album, is ridiculously good.

Overall, the record goes from average to good at times. Not that amazing, but it's ok. Looks like Cave-In's got some competition in the "wannabe-Failure" category now.

tbm are a great band, period. they keep pushing the envelope, and aren't doing what everyone else is. there simply one step ahead of the game. the lyrics are honest, from the heart, and aren't typical like all the other bands. the chemistry between both guitarists are like no other. there should be more original and true bands like them! rock!!!

I just picked this up, and overall, I think it's very good. I thought most of their first album was derivative crap, but many of the songs here are catchy and well-written, all are of top-notch production value, and several are decidedly awesome. Only major complaint is the lyrical content, much of which is simple, as far as I can tell. Track #1 is a great song.

awesome record. Im glad the space sound is back, a lot of bands like Cave In, Beloved, Narcissus, Hopesfall and Muse are playing prog stuff, which is cool.

They obviously were following the fad if they were screaming before. And now they realize the fad is to get away from all this screaming bullshit. These dipshits dont know how to think for themselves and come up with something new.

I love the new CD! I pick up on Hum and Failure influence but in no way is it "ripping" those bands off.
At least they aren't influenced by Taking Back Sunday or Thursday...both of which suck in my opinion.

I dont really take this review as a personal attack on the band. He isnt talking about the induvidual members or anything. The reviewer doesnt like the band and made points to back up why. People dont always praise what they review. Otherwise reviews would be pointless, everyone would just be blowing hot air up the asses of bands that already have over inflated egos. Just because you like it doesnt mean everyone is, thus you cant really try to say someone is wrong when they say they like or dislike a band without becoming a music nazi. You can state you like it and give the reasons for why you do. I think you gotta remember that everyone is coming at bands from a different direction, maybe this is something new to you and you are impressed, maybe someone has heard a million bands like this and they are tired of dime a dozen bands, maybe they hate any music remotely like this. thats the beauty of opinion, no one is right or wrong.

The review seemed like a personal stab at TBM. I have the record and I happen to think it is pretty good, especially since this album a) has some great songs and b) sounds nothing like most of the emo crap that is out there. Kudos to them for doing what they want and to bad for you that the best you could do was to trash them for doing something different.
You should re-name your site "my-closed-minded-wanna-be-punk-news.org"
PS. GO LISTEN TO FAILURE MORE. TBM MIGHT BE GOOD BUT THEY DON'T RIP OFF THE ALMIGHTY FAILURE...DUMBASS.

Maybe the 'kids' would be more accepting of these bands if people like you weren't such condescending blowhards. If they don't like the Stones it's their perogative, and there's nothing you can say that can change it. It doesn't make you better.

Oh, and for the record, this band blows.

Shut the fuck up, please. Those bands don't make songs I (or many other former and current Beautiful Mistake fans for that matter) enjoy listening to. Nobody's telling you to listen to these guys. Go sit on a pitchfork.

And to my fellow Ace-Deucer Joseph, could you please tell me why, in your opinion, they changed their style so much from the first album? Me and many of my friends loved the first album, but this one will end up as a CD-R coaster on our coffee tables. That's not to say I don't like mellow music (Elliott's one of my favorite bands of all time), I just don't like bland, unmemorable music like what's on this disc.

i have their new cd and it does not rip off failure. it does not rip off hum. influence? yes of course but it must be quite easy for you, the reviewer, to label and stop thinking so you can have the nice review posted on this shitty site. it really is laughable but oh well. i am glad TBM is not a "cool" scene band who dick you suck after getting in on their guestlist. they have integrity and they work hard and their hardwork has shown on their new cd. great songs. great texture. total progression. good for them. your still the same, sad fuck.

i miss the screaming from light a match. the drum beats arent nearly as interesting as the first album and the guitar rifts are nearly as edgy. however, it is still a pretty good album with just a changed style from hardcore emo to straight up emo. so overall its worth having but not as good as the first.

    My Score:

I absolutely loved the 1st album, and I like Failure's music quite a bit too. That said, this one fell WAY below my expectations. The guitar sound is completely different and lost any edge it had, and the drums got considerably weaker too (may be because of the new drummer). I don't really miss the screaming at all as the guy's voice was awful at times, but they didn't need to completely strip the music of what nuts it had. At least now if I go see them live again, this CD should turn the scuzzy metalheads away so I won't have to risk contracting scabies.

And how about them biting Elliott on the chorus to the last song? "Calm are the hands of the blessed Americans" is the line. Maybe it's a subtle nod to the greatness that was "False Cathedrals", which would be cool.
