Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

This CD is a split record. The first 12 tracks are spoken word by Mumia Abu-Jamal (as well as some by Assata Shakur, Jello Biafra, Allen Ginsberg and Bob Dole) and the last 4 tracks are music by Man Is The Bastard. Mumia Abu-Jamal is a radical activist/journalist/author/collumnist/spoken word artist who has been on death row since 1982. On this record he rants about, among other things, police brutality, racism, the civil rights movement and death row itself. The perhaps most intriguing and moving track of the CD is the first one, where Mumia describes the feeling of living on death row, as well as pointing out fundamentally unfair aspects of the legal system in the US. His voice is dedicated, determined and sincere, and is pleasant to listen to.

I think the spoken word part could have been even better. Some of the subjects covered are, although deeply relevant, not the most interesting. I'm missing Mumia's take on international politics and his perspective on bigger issues, which often can be even more thought-provoking. Those who subscribe to his columns know what I mean.

Man Is The Bastard is an obscure act, even by hardcore standards. Their heavy, slow hardcore (or more specifically: power violence) is fueled by two bass guitars, multiple growling/screaming vocalists and pummeling drums. The production is raw and unpolished and the feedback factor is relatively high. Extreme music, basically. Still, the link between them and Mumia is far from absurd. Both are on a mission of radical change. When reading their lyrics you discover that the spirit is the same as that of Mumia, and hopefully this will shine true and become audible in their music, even to those who normally would find it unlistenable.

Man Is The Bastard is a band with a truly unique sound (something which is far from common these days). Their three songs (the first one is an intro) create a very powerful atmosphere. The heavy bass riffing can only be described as both catchy to original. The growling vocals effectively drive the message in. My only complaint is that they from time to time stick to one specific part for too long, which can get boring.

The cover inlay booklet of the CD is thick and very informative, the artwork is cool, so there's nothing missing with the packaging. The playing time of the CD is by far long enough, so in this respect it is a very "complete" record. Although the spoken word material is a bit uneven, this CD is worth buying.

I can see how this can piss people off, putting people guilty of genocide behind bars. But punishment has to be rehab, not revenge.

lushj, Mc Veigh, or some mass killer of his level, cannot be compared to figures such as Hitler. How can you have a group of people responsible for genocide- mass killings in the millions- and lock them up in jail. Its absurd to think of it. Its not a great thing that we get to kill as punishment, but how can we reconcile the fact that some responsible for something as insane as genocide simply be locked away behind bars?

Ok, maybe I'm getting this Anonymous person mixed up, but I do believe your original argument was along the lines of you not meeting or hearing about cool cops, and then you come right back with an argument stating that it doesn't matter if cops are good and bad ... not an argument, in fact, it's contradictory. Although cops may pull people over for speeding tickets, it's fucking just if I see your stupid ass driving 150 in front of a school. When you hit that little child in your car, try explaining why cops are worse than you.

"What about Hitler, and other cases such as him?"

Just because I don't support state-sponsored murder doesn't mean there's no punishment involved. Prison should be about rehabilitation, the opportunity for redemption, and punishment. Some cases will never be rehabbed, and some will never understand the enormity of their crimes. Most of these folks should never be let free. That's punishment.

Killing a mass murderer as revenge is an empty gesture. You can only kill them once. If you allow them to live, there's the chance that they will recognize the horror and pain they've inflicted and they will have to suffer for the rest of their existence knowing this. And in terms of an empty gesture, check out the organizations of murder victims families who actively oppose the death penalty.
Another possibility that the death penalty cuts off is understanding. Understanding why a Ted Bundy exists and kills, and understanding the details of a Timothy McVeigh plot. Since we've killed McVeigh, will we ever know the truth of what happened in the Oklahoma City bombing? Since we continue to execute serial killers, will we ever get a firm understanding (and possibly some preventative information) of what causes a human being to treat others as slabs of meat? Personally, I'd rather we spend our time trying to prevent psychopaths from developing, rather than spend our time destroying the evidence through executing psycopaths.

Whether a cop is a good person or a bad person is irrelevent you idiot. They are required to punish people based on laws which may or may not be just. A cop mayh have just saved a baby and he might not be an asshole who brutalizes minorities, but he is still required to give tickets to people for marginally breaking a ridiculous speed limit....which supports unjust laws which suspend licenses for months on end, resulting in many lost jobs and no job equals no money. Cops are required to enforce the law, good or bad, and if you disagree with a law then instantly ALL police officers are your enemy....that's just the way it is I'm sorry. People who say "they're just doing their job." seriously need to shut the fuck up and get their head checked....hitlers soldiers were doing a job too, does that make what they did ok? Hell no. Don't give me stupid excuses...there are no excuses for some of the truely ridiculous laws that are in place...which are voted on by the idiotic masses. Cops will always, until we reach much more logical state of law, be our enemies.

Time to witness what a hasty generalization is. "I just hate cops in general," and "I have not met a cool one and met and have heard about quite a few cocksuckers", yeah thanks for researching ... your opinion still means a lot though ... bahahaha.

Before you write something moronic like that learn how to argue. Some cops are good, some cops are bad. And that's the way it goes

Police officer is a profession, to hate someone becuase of their profession is as ignorant as all of the cops who use racial profiling. I've met some cops who are disgusting and worthy of all of the cliche "pig" references, and i've met some cops that are cool as hell, who as long as someone is not a direct danger to others, won't go around fucking with them. It's not that all cops are bad, it's just that when they are bad, they do some really fucked up shit and that's the stuff we tend to hear about the most, especially in music.

1- I believe that the death penalty is morally wrong in all cases. The state killing people to show that killing is wrong is ridiculous- the practice is barbaric and cheapens our society. That's the short version.

Regardless of whether or not Mumia is guilty of the crime he is convicted of, he should not be executed.

2- His trial seems to have been pretty flawed, if he is convicted @ a fair trial, well, then he most probably killed the policeman and he should be punished for it. Now, there's enough question about it that any execution is tainted forever, and since execution is by definition final, there's no way to correct it if there is a different truth than what the first trial decided.

I am also from Philly, and the police force earned its reputation for brutality and racism honestly under corrupt thugs like Frank Rizzo. We are the city that bombed an entire neighborhood, don't forget!

Sounds like self defence to me....if he did it...which I dont think he did. In the words of Henry Rollins- "once you put on the badge you give up your human rights"- all persons of authority should be required to adhere to MUCH stricter rules and regulations than us civilians...since they do happen to be in a position of power. A person can be forgiven for their mistakes, someone who has power over someone, however, cannot, and shouldn't.

I never said there shouldn't be police.....but there should be a TOTAL overhaul of our police forces....if someone i knew got shot I would call the cops, even though i wouldn''t want to, just to see if maybe they can do the job they are SUPPOSED to be doing for a change. But, to tell you the truth, it wouldn't do any good. Just ask Henry, his friend got shot in the face, he called the cops and for his trouble he was harrassed by the cops for living with another man and they called him "sweetie", and they never got the assailant either. The only thing cops seem to do these days is bust teens for selling marijuana, crack or whatever.....something that shouldn't even be a crime and carries ridiculous sentences. The like to pull over people for no reason or for pointless reasons. They'll harass you if you look "suspiscious"...who the hell should define "suspicious".....Im way more worried about what the "man" in the white house and goody two shoes right wing christians are doing than what a poor black or white guy with torn jeans and messy hair is doing.
