Rolling Stone gave this album one star. Spin gave it an "F" and called it "unlistenable." Within 11 minutes of listening to this album it was in my Top Ten of 2004, with a chance of being number 1.

On this release, Liars truly push the boundaries of music. Keeping in tradition of "They Threw Us All In a Trench and Built a Monument On Top," the music comes off with a strong dance vibe, only they abandoned the traditional arrangement of bass, guitar, and drums. Instead, they favor heavy guitar samples and minimalistic drums along with an assortment of keyboards tossed in there.

It's almost impossible to describe. What Liars have created is an album that is noisy, gritty, rockin', intricate, sloppy, and makes you want to get up and dance. Not only that, but lyrically this band tops most. From the song Broken Witch:

"I NO LONGER WANT TO BE A MAN.
I WANT TO BE A HORSE.
MEN HAVE SMALL THOUGHTS.
I NEED A TAIL.
GIVE ME A TAIL.
TELL ME A TALE
OF THE CHILDREN THAT STOOD IN THE WAY
OF THE ENDLESS WINTER
OF THE WHITE WITCH WHO'S LONGING TO CRIPPLE IMPALE
I, I AM THE BOY.
SHE, SHE IS THE GIRL.
HE HE IS THE BEAR.
WE WE ARE THE ARMY YOU SEE THROUGH THE RED HAZE OF BLOOD"

The most standout track on the album is "There's Always Room On the Broom." Starting off with the grittiest, grungiest guitar sample, the song plows through 3 minutes and five seconds of the craziest tune. It'll make you squirm, jump, grind, and scream all at the same time.

I guess the best way to sum this album up is that it is the scary as hell to listen to. Honestly, it's frightening how good it is, and frightening how it sounds. This is the soundtrack to the Apocalypse.

i fucking love this album it is an immensly welcome break from all this shitty whiny emo or second rate punk. this album actualy made me scared. and you have to admit that very few albums can actualy provoke emotions just through sound like this. and on the subject of low-fi and indie. i am a self confessed stupid indie boy and i love it there are too many bands that rely on there managment, friends in high places, good looks and mtv. IDIE IS WHAT KEEPS MUSIC ALIVE. and bands like Liars are the ones to thank. i am going to fopp to get this tommow for sure

Ofcourse not, but I happen to really enjoy this album, but not because it's difficult. I mean, I also listen to bands such as Rocket From The Crypt, the Oblivians and even Weezer. That isn't difficult music, but I still enjoy it, just like this album, which has a totally unique vibe that I enjoy. What's the big deal?

And I also love Slayer, so yeah, there are people who like Slayer and The Liars.

Exactly, relay. I mean, I can listen to some prog-rock and things of that nature, but this stuff just seems hollow.

It reminds me of someone splashing paint all over a canvas and people going crazy over it just because they've never seen anything like it.

First of all, Iron Maiden rocks! Sure the whole Eddie monster thang is played out and laughable, but Aces High! Number of the Beast! Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner... There is intelligence there that places them far above the butt-rock, 80s metal you guys seem to be dogging on... Sometimes I wonder if these artsy boys are so scared someone will "get it" and realize they really aren't that deep at all...

Not all metal is The Darkness-style cheese... Neurosis has some of the deepest, philosophical lyrics I've ever heard! I could wane on, but... I'm sorta playing devil's advocate here since I already admitted to wanting to check this out, but I'll defend metal anyday over lo-fi indie music (which by the review this didn't sound like anyway...) Like Forty said, to each his own... everytime someone doesn't like a band it's not necessarily because "they don't get it"...

    My Score:

I loathe Iron Maiden. Any band that writes songs pertaining to monsters with intentions of being taken seriously suck in my book.

I don't know much metal bands, but what I do know is that most "so-called" metal bands are soft as hell (what I've heard Iron Maiden's "Brave New World," for instance.)

    My Score:

I dont take Slayer's lyrics seriously, or most metal seriously, honestly. And I don't listen to 80's metal, outside of Slayer and sometimes Iron Maiden. I don't listen to Venom are anything like that. I'm sure you'd like Slayer's lyrics more if they released one 7" in 1979 and you were the only person who knew of them. You're the caricature of the elitist punker, it's hilarious to think that people like you are real. The point I'm making is, you think some of the bands I listen to have dumb lyrics, I think some of the bands you listen to have dumb lyrics. It's all opinion. You think it stands up better, I don't. Don't expect me or anyone else to accept your opinion as fact, it's not going to happen.

Compare something humerous like that to 80's metal... It stands up much better.

Do you think anyone takes Slayer lyrics seriously today?

    "Forty, you like metal.

Anything made by anyone with a taste for Metal (excepting John Zorn) is just about as stupid as these idiots sitting in a cafe trying to write deep lyrics.

Your "bring the fuckin' jams" approach to music is just as stupid as the polar opposite, and since you don't like real rock n roll, you may want to refrain from dissing bands for a while.
    "

Oh please, can you make one comment without sounding condescending? I think I'll say whatever I want, I don't like low-fi rock stuff, you're right, but everything you said was simply based on opinion. You aren't the be all end all of musical taste, BSD. You want to talk about shitty lyrics? You gave a sparkling review to the Consumers, who had such brilliant lyrics as " I'm going to find a way to drive you mad like piss on you or fuck your dad." Yeah, you have a lot of room to talk about bad lyrics. So go ahead and talk about whatever the hell you want, just don't expect me to take you seriously.

    My Score:

It only sounds pretentious and fake if you're originally inclined to believe that arty/intetellectual sounding music sounds pretentious and fake. Just because an album is well thought out and intricate doesn't mean it's pretentious and arty. Look at "Relationship of Command." That CD, most people would agree, is absolutely amazing and well thought out. But when they add instrumentation, more complicated drum parts, and extended solo sections (as the Mars Volta), they instantly get passed off by most as sounding arty or pretentious.

Breakdown your stereotypes and your "I'm too original to listen to 'fake pretentious crap'" attitudes. This album is amazing, and that's all there is too it.

    Exactly.

There's a difference between the honesty of Curtis's lyrics and this shit... You can tell from the delivery and lyrics whether it's honest or not. This stuff sounds like some artsy guys sat down and tried to be deep. Joy Division sounds like some guy sat down and wrote what was going on in his mind.

Same thing with all post-punk, and most rock n roll.

Compare "My Friends Over You" to "Ever Fallen In Love"... There's a huge difference. One outright SOUNDS manufactured.

At least that's the way I hear it.

Ooooooh theres gonna be a fight in the liars review!

I think that to a point you do have to be conciously artistic. Because if you dont put some effort into the music you are writing, then it will never evolve or accomplish anything for anyone. If you just throw down the jams, then well, its never gonna be anything but a quick thrill that gets old within a week. But a truly thought out and creatively written song can be beautiful, if not done in excess. Its all about having a ear for writing and when to know when you have pushed it far enough for yourself to be satisfied, rather then just keep pushing it across the line to see how many pats on the back you get. Music at is core is a expression of a person, and some people are just more thoughtful people then others.

Just cuz its calculated, doesnt mean its not someones heart in soul in that song. I cant remember when putting some blood and sweat into something made it worse.

on that note, I never heard this.

A concept album about heart would just defeat the whole purpose. Bands like this one are so concerned with making something artsy or intellectual that it all just ends up sounding incredibly pretentious. Great bands aren't challenging for the sake of being challenging, they don't write songs while thinking "hahaha, no one will get this, we're so brilliant!" This shit is fake, that's the bottom line. You can say "oh you don't get!" That's fine, you can believe that if it makes it easier to hear people criticize music you like.

I hadn't read pitchfork for a long time as the reviews seemed to get worse and worse. Having said that I checked out their review for this and I was very impressed, I found it very informative and balanced. I courageously and cautiously tried another review, the Kill Bill 2 soundtrack hoping for more of the same. Same old pitchfork. I'll allow these quotes from the review speak for themselves:

"guitars are brandished in a strangulating combination of Indian warcry, Hitchcockian dread, dog whistle, and recycling plant"

"a skulking ooze that slinks down the stairs and leaps to the floor, part innocent, haunted-house shiver and part libidinous excess"

Perhaps it's just me, but it seems like a lot of words saying very little.

"Most people on this website are too dumb to enjoy this album."

    unfortunately true.

people were expecting NYC dancepunk and Liars instead delivered arhythmic, bizarre no-wavey noise. it's heady material, a rare, true piece of art among contemoparies feigning art.

it's a testament to the artistic merit of the band that they created quite possibly the greatest modern dancepunk record with "they threw is in a trench...", yet went on to completely subvert and destroy their near flawless formula for their second record. they could've made serious waves in the mainstream, but instead took a sharp left turn and created something unique and spectacular.

more bands need balls like this.
