Rolling Stone gave this album one star. Spin gave it an "F" and called it "unlistenable." Within 11 minutes of listening to this album it was in my Top Ten of 2004, with a chance of being number 1. Please login or register to post comments. What are the benefits of having a Punknews.org account?
Esto sÍ es vanguardia what is everyones favorite track? mine is either: this album is best enjoyd on good qualitly speakers at a hefty volume in a dark room with candles. just a little piece of advice i fucking love this album it is an immensly welcome break from all this shitty whiny emo or second rate punk. this album actualy made me scared. and you have to admit that very few albums can actualy provoke emotions just through sound like this. and on the subject of low-fi and indie. i am a self confessed stupid indie boy and i love it there are too many bands that rely on there managment, friends in high places, good looks and mtv. IDIE IS WHAT KEEPS MUSIC ALIVE. and bands like Liars are the ones to thank. i am going to fopp to get this tommow for sure If you like this, that's cool, I'm just stating the impression that I get. I'm not like certain other people, who think they can dictate what other people listen to.. "Just because it's "difficult" doesn't make it good." Exactly, relay. I mean, I can listen to some prog-rock and things of that nature, but this stuff just seems hollow. Dude this CD is terrible. Just because it's "difficult" doesn't make it good. First of all, Iron Maiden rocks! Sure the whole Eddie monster thang is played out and laughable, but Aces High! Number of the Beast! Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner... There is intelligence there that places them far above the butt-rock, 80s metal you guys seem to be dogging on... Sometimes I wonder if these artsy boys are so scared someone will "get it" and realize they really aren't that deep at all... I loathe Iron Maiden. Any band that writes songs pertaining to monsters with intentions of being taken seriously suck in my book. I dont take Slayer's lyrics seriously, or most metal seriously, honestly. And I don't listen to 80's metal, outside of Slayer and sometimes Iron Maiden. I don't listen to Venom are anything like that. I'm sure you'd like Slayer's lyrics more if they released one 7" in 1979 and you were the only person who knew of them. You're the caricature of the elitist punker, it's hilarious to think that people like you are real. The point I'm making is, you think some of the bands I listen to have dumb lyrics, I think some of the bands you listen to have dumb lyrics. It's all opinion. You think it stands up better, I don't. Don't expect me or anyone else to accept your opinion as fact, it's not going to happen. Compare something humerous like that to 80's metal... It stands up much better. "Forty, you like metal. It only sounds pretentious and fake if you're originally inclined to believe that arty/intetellectual sounding music sounds pretentious and fake. Just because an album is well thought out and intricate doesn't mean it's pretentious and arty. Look at "Relationship of Command." That CD, most people would agree, is absolutely amazing and well thought out. But when they add instrumentation, more complicated drum parts, and extended solo sections (as the Mars Volta), they instantly get passed off by most as sounding arty or pretentious. Exactly. Ooooooh theres gonna be a fight in the liars review! Forty, you like metal. I just tried to listen to this in Borders... and thought it was SO punk/experimental as to be completely unlistenable. A concept album about heart would just defeat the whole purpose. Bands like this one are so concerned with making something artsy or intellectual that it all just ends up sounding incredibly pretentious. Great bands aren't challenging for the sake of being challenging, they don't write songs while thinking "hahaha, no one will get this, we're so brilliant!" This shit is fake, that's the bottom line. You can say "oh you don't get!" That's fine, you can believe that if it makes it easier to hear people criticize music you like. If we had concept albums based on heart. It'd all end up being punk and hardcore songs talking about how everyone is a sell out. This review and the ensuing comments made me want to check this out... I gotta at least respect a band that people either love or hate. I probably won't dig it, but it sounds interesting (which is more than can be said for most of the shit that passes for music nowadays...) yea because if you don't like something it must be because you're too dumb to do so I hadn't read pitchfork for a long time as the reviews seemed to get worse and worse. Having said that I checked out their review for this and I was very impressed, I found it very informative and balanced. I courageously and cautiously tried another review, the Kill Bill 2 soundtrack hoping for more of the same. Same old pitchfork. I'll allow these quotes from the review speak for themselves: Couldn't have said it better myself. "Most people on this website are too dumb to enjoy this album." "Jesse is Pitchfork's bitch." a friend? bought me they threw us in a ditch for christmas. i got about 3 listens out of it. fuck this band. this album should be burned at the stake. "You forgot (?) to mention that this is a concept album based on the New England witch trials. Each track takes a turn taking the side of either the prosecuted "witches," or the group of Christian women accusing them of such. Very, very, amazing concept, but I think they could've done it better. For such a specific idea, the lyrics are *way* too vague, but the evil beats it gives off fit really well." not my thing. this album is just...everywhere. i'm sorry, but this album is a piece of shit. it is seriously painful to listen to. "they threw us in a trench..." was way better Is that a fucking program or is someone typing in taht shit. Fuck you! "Only webzine music critics like this album. And we all know what webzine music critics are...dorks." To be honest, I've never read a Pitchfork review, if you'd ever believe that. Jesse is Pitchfork's bitch. liars are so cool that i wanna kick my mom in the face Only webzine music critics like this album. And we all know what webzine music critics are...dorks. Blech. I figure the soundtrack to the apocalypse is Mogwai's "Christmas Steps".....which I contend is their best song, and just happens to be on their worst album. Discuss amongst yourselves. Oh my lord I am freaking out listening to this!!! What is wrong with my mind! Shit. I forgot to mention that part of it. You forgot (?) to mention that this is a concept album based on the New England witch trials. Each track takes a turn taking the side of either the prosecuted "witches," or the group of Christian women accusing them of such. Very, very, amazing concept, but I think they could've done it better. For such a specific idea, the lyrics are *way* too vague, but the evil beats it gives off fit really well. awesome band so mad i missed them last time they came around. On "They Threw Us All In a Trench," many of the songs were lumped with the dance-punk NYC heyday and some sounded a bit like early Gang of Four...according to some. I quite enjoyed this...no more Gang of Four rips, and that's always a good sign. Definitely an acquired taste, but in the end, pretty rewarding. Shit, for me this is the best album of 2004 already. It took a couple of listens but I'm completely hooked to this. This album has a totally unique vibe, kinda evil really. This is way more scary music than all those fake-ass black metal bands. This album is AMAZING! I just picked up Liars EP from pointfivelimeyrecords.com and it is completely different then this full length, but still absolutely AMAZING! I'll emphasize in caps one more time: Most people on this website are too dumb to enjoy this album. The reason that I showed Rolling Stone and Spin's opinion is to show that this music isn't for everybody. In fact, a lot of people wouldn't even call it music. Give it a shot, I think it rips. Hey Jesse, short review, but nontheless i think ill check it out. "Rolling Stone gave this album one star. Spin gave it an "F" and called it "unlistenable." Within 11 minutes of listening to this album it was in my Top Ten of 2004, with a chance of being number 1." I like how you went out of your way to mention how much everyone else hates this band. I just watched the video to "There's always more room on the broom" off the website, and I don't see why you enjoyed it so much. I think I may even enjoy that Holden Caulfield band more. Half the song just sounded like my old modem dial-up tone. There is a band called Liars Academy. No band I know of by the name of The Liars. Passe...I want The Liars. |
