Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

I've never been a huge fan of New Found Glory. Nor have I ever been a huge fan of the more mainstream and pop orientated punk rock bands around. Therefore, I didn't have high expectations for the new New Found Glory full-length, entitled Catalyst. However, this album took me by surprise. I was forced to swallow my pride, and to accept that this album actually is rather good.

First of all, this album is not for the close minded, stereotype punkrock fan. It’s melodic, sometimes a bit over the top with its harmonies and sugar-laden choruses, and some Something Corporate-esque piano lines are also included. The lyrics cannot be labelled as great poetry now matter how you look at them. However, its strength lies in its incredible catchiness, addictiveness and, at times, very strong song writing. It’s radio friendly, sure, and it’s also a band that the punk rock elite gets kicks out of dissing. But still. I choose not to focus on such matters, and I’ll instead try to focus on the qualities this album has.

The first three tracks are all very strong. The intro is a very short affair, and reminded me of Kid Dynamite at times (!). Fast and to the point. Second track is the song which is also released as a single, namely “All Downhill From Here”. Although it’s cheesy and very poppy, it’s still a good track. Mostly a mid-tempo affair, which reminds me of a mixture of Allister, Midtown and Something Corporate. Surprisingly, it actually works out (at least for me). “This Disaster” follows in the same vein. Mid tempo verse – and with a “huge” chorus.

However, at times, NFG really goes too far with the emotional and sugar-sweet melodies. “I Don’t Wanna Know” is a song that reeks of unnecessarity. It’s also hard to get out of your head, as its orchestra-driven chorus tends to stick inside your head like glue. “Ending In Tragedy” is another song that follows this formula.

The strongest track on the album, by far, is “Your Biggest Mistake”. Groovy, up-tempo, positive and with an impressive flow. It’s one of the more punkier tracks on the record too. Another higlight is “No News Is Good News”, found on the sampler “Rock Against Bush”. A mid-tempo affair, but with the typical strong and catchy chorus.

The musicianship on “Catalyst” is top notch. NFG sounds really tight on this record, and the production also helps the instruments to shine the way they’re supposed to be. Some may be put off by the singer’s voice, but there’s no denying that the guy can sing. Overall, I think this is a surprisingly strong release. Radio friendly, catchy, will appeal to the MTV punks, but still good. I can’t help it. And I don’t really care either. Perhaps a guilty pleasure, but a good one at that.

Not a revolutionary record, but it’s good entertainment when you’re in the mood for it.

Great cd, released right before summer. Always the cd my friends and I reach for when driving to the beach.

    Oh and about this
"You sir, are a shit head. You're not allowed to talk about music ever again. And if I ever hear you do it again, I swear to god I'll eat your first born son."

Too bad he is absolutely correct. Jordan can at least sing half decently. Sorry but I prefer that over all the yelling from the "true" punk. True punk is rediculously stupid. Bunch of kids with mohawks running around acting like they are against the system.

    Get a life.

How many dicks would I need in my mouth to sound exactly like Jordan? I liked the video they did where Troma fucked them up. I would have prefered to see Jordan get his arms ripped off by a gorrilla and beaten with them until he past out from lack of blood. Than the gorrilla would piss all over him - that would have been better - keep up the great work boys I can't wait to see you at the Warp tour. I'll be the guy in the front row with a feathered mullet jacking off to your music.Peace

This CD is much different then there other CD's.. I think it offers a more matured NFG but if you say it's not punk.. then your right. NFG has never been punk well not the punk as the "punks" refer to. This is MTV punk or pop-punk as some like to call it. It's a good CD and I recoomend most of you to take the time and sit down and listen to it. Its catchy and very rythmetic.

Maybe it is that he can sing usually, but for those of us that mix music recordings, know that there are an ENORMOUS amount of auto-tuner on the vocals.
As long as it sounds natural, I think Auto-tuner is great.
But the vocals on this record sounds nothing like a natural voice. Just listen to track two.

    Overall, a good record.

Coming from a 23-year-old who has seen this band since they toured with LTJ 4 years ago... (so you know where I'm coming from): This cd starts off pretty decent, then track #5 (I Don't Wanna Know) sucks the life out of everything. The rest of the cd is completely mediocre with the exception of 1 or 2 songs (tracks 7 and 11). If your favorite NFG cd to date is Sticks & Stones, you may like this. If not, I'd recommend spending your money on something else... like the new Piebald album for example.

And for the love of Anarchy, keep the scene real!! Enough of this bickering about these mainstream "punk" bands. If you don't like them, stop talking about them, and they will eventually go away. Mainstream music fans will soon lose interest in "pop-punk" and the trend will switch back to hard rock like it always does. As long as you keep listening to what you want and don't let the MAN control your music tastes, the scene will live on.

    ATTENTION REVIEWERS:

Fuck i have been wanting to say this for a LONG time now. When u are reviewing an album, you are not asked to review if u like the kind of music or not, nor your opinion on the genre of the music you're reviewing, or to compare it to every other kind of music out there that yer a fan of. A review is supposed to be meant for reviewing the album for WHAT IT IS...not what it isnt.

Ok, so for example, me myself am not a huge pop-punk fan at all. My favorites include Rise Against, Strike Anywhere, Ten Foot Pole, The Lawrence ARms, Descendents, Big D and The Kids Table, Bad Religion, NOFX, One Man Army, Propagandhi, Pulley, ETC. But when i review an album, i am reviewing it for what it is, and i base my review on what kind of music they are and how well they can pull it off in that particular genre of music. i dont COMPARE the band to bands that i am fans of like Propagandhi and Thrice and whine how they need to be less pop-punk, and more like these bands. Whats the point in that?

If all music sounded the same, the type that u enjoy, then where woud be the fun in that? i mean, who would really want New Found Glory to do a 180 and put out a screamo (if yer a fan of screamo), ska (if yer a fan of ska) , skate punk (if a fan) album, JUST to MATCH the type of music u in particular like.

So, ppl.....when u see REVIEW: NEW FOUND GLORY, CATALYST, dont come in and start bitching about how NFG is terrible cuz theyre not really punk. Go into it thinking, ok i listened to this album KNOWING it was gonna be pop-punk, and now i am gonna review it on that basis. Just because a band works harder than other people doesn't mean they deserve respect.

If they work hard to make bland musical crap that doesn't contribute positively to the world but rather feeds stupid hot topic sterotypes of what "punk" is, and only their bank accounts, needs their heads shoved out of their asses and given a James Brown album.

You also posted the most immature thing I have ever read on this site, and that is saying a lot.

You, my friend, need to go to the mall, buy Fugazi's "Repeater," listen to it, realize the brilliance of it, understand what the album is about, feel bad about buying it at the mall, throw away all your new found glory albums, and then kill yourself so MTV has one less victim to brainwash.

...or you know, buy James Brown's live album "Sex Machine."

Also, working hard just makes you a tool for captialism, free markets, and the "invisible hand" (an economics term, look it up). So fuck that shit.

i work harder than they do. fact. I own my own business, I am working on two degrees, help out with local activism, publish a zine, etc.,etc.

being in a major label band is not work. its an unfortunate excursion of profitable energy. I do firsthand know what it takes bands to get that far. I've seen the process on a friend of mines band. It takes bullshit, compromise, and an absurd amount of using your life toward no substantial benefit but a disc of disposable tunes that evoke ideas that are absent in your actions.

they have nice houses, nice cars, take vacations, eat out alot, they're beyond having any discernible value as people besides 'were set'.
