Published on May 21st 2004

I bought this CD based on recommendations. For about a week I had heard from a lot of friends about how good it is. I'd also seen a lot of hype in different magazines and in record stores. So I bought it. And I listened to the first three tracks. And I put it in my stack. And I didn't think about it for a few days, reveling in my other purchases.

It's not that I didn't like it. In fact, "The Wrong Way" and "Staring at the Sun" (despite sharing song names with Sublime and U2) had me fairly hooked. Both featured upbeat loops with simple and heavily distorted bass-lines. The thing is, with "Dreams" the tempo slows a bit and the mood of the entire CD shifts to "chill music." I wasn't ready for it. So I put it away for awhile.

When I picked it back up, I was ready to give it another shot. And I'm so glad I did. What truly grabbed me was the acapella song "Ambulance." It was not so much the music that grabbed me, but the sheer power of the vocals delivered by Tunde Adebimpe's distinctively gorgeous voice. When the chorus hit with enough harmonies to encompass a small choir, I soon found myself singing along with "I will be your accident if you will be my ambulance/I will be your screech and crash if you will be my crutch and cast/I will be your one more time if you will be my one last chance/Oh fall for me." I was hooked and instantly in love.

To really describe TV On The Radio's sound, it's necessary to understand that they're only a three piece band. The music is composed of bass, guitar, loops, and multiple vocal harmonies that usually feature a kick-ass falsetto (yeah, I know, that sounds like an oxymoron). Two tracks feature real drums, but they're played in a way that is undistinguishable from the loops. Two other tracks feature flute and bari/alto saxophone. Overall, it's great music to listen to while laying back and absorbing it completely.

I realize that this isn't going to be music that everyone on this website is going to enjoy. It's not punk, and some fool is going to whine about that. And the fact that I said that it's not punk and that somebody is going to whine about it is going to make someone whine about it trying to sound witty. Trust me: you won't sound witty. I honestly don't think that print can do this band justice. The only reason why this CD isn't getting a 10 is because there are some tracks that just don't match up to the others. Still worth the buy. This band has lived up to it's hype.

    My Score:

"jesus lizard, slint,= overrated. both bands shit the bed. Albini's projects are what made Touch and Go, in my opinon Touch and Go rode the success of BIg BLack and other ALbinin projects and that's what gave them significance in the first place. If it wasn't for Big Black , Touch and GO would not be around today."

i'd wager money you don't own another touch & go record outside of "songs about fucking", that's the only way you could make such a ridiculous comment.

as great as big black was, in the grand scheme of things, slint and the jesus lizard are so infinitely more important to the development of indie rock.

"I want to like it cause I like Touch and Go but honestly I don't think they've put anything great out since Big Black was making records a million years ago"

you are an idiot and have no idea what you're talking about.

all i have to say is the jesus lizard, slint, and about one third of the signifcant indie music of the 90's.

Go see them on tour: they increase to a five-piece. The drummer is awesome.

HA! Isn't it funny how one person dosen't like something so he/she thinks it sucks. Seems...oblivious to reality...kinda.

"have no idea why this is on 'punknews' though."

Why not? I mean, looking over at the latest reviews, I see reviews of The Pixies, Murder By Death, New Found Glory, Piebald -- Jesus, man, there's a fucking Wu-Tang Clan review. Variety is good; frankly, I think it's why I check this site everyday.

this moves way too slow, I want to like it cause I like Touch and Go but honestly I don't think they've put anything great out since Big Black was making records a million years ago. Oh and these songs make no sense, the indie kids are like sheep, hey kids the writers love it! It's hip, eat it!

    My Score:

Best cd to come out in a long time. Great music. Most kids here won't like it because it doesn't suck.

    My Score:

they're a really unique band, who would've thought doowop and post punk could work together. the problem is there isn't much variety. they have one spactacular trick up their sleeve, but they play it on every track and it all starts to run together. distorted bass that sounds like humming, electronic clicks and beats, soulful vocals, slow methodical pace, repeat.

the 'trick' works though, so i can't talk shit, i just hope they mix it up a bit in the future.

Excerpt from an imaginary conversation in your head.

1: Wow, I should hate these guys because I don't have any good reason too.

2: Yeah, you're right, I'll call them boring.

1: Yeah, anything slower is boring. It just sucks.

2: You said it. Okay, time to post something and try to look like I'm too good to listen to this kind of music so people will know how different I am from everyone else.

1: Ooh! Don't forget to end it with a misogynistic comment!

2: Can do good buddy! High five!

    *high five*

    1 & 2: WOOOOOO!

These guys take the badness to a whole new level.

excerpt of an imaginary conversation between 2 touch n go employees

1: Wow listen to this it puts me to sleep faster than the new !!! 12".

2: No way everything we've been putting out lately has definite snorability factor, but on top of that these guys are just SO bad that the indie kids will have to love them.

1: Yeah I love it how we get to put out the worst music ever (next to polyvinyl and saddle creek), yet we have a built in fanbase of wire rimmed glasses wearing, shaggy hair sporting, tight t shirt wearing clones.

2: But the girls are so hot.

    My Score:

Looks like Fugazi will be on the shelf for a while, but until they get back together (please?) I can still enjoy genuinely creative bands like TV On The Radio. Among others, of course.

To the person below that called it "overrated indy shit" and "boring", sure I'll admit its boring if you're listening to this after pretty much anything else coming out right about now. I surely wouldn't recommend listening to this before, after, or between the new Piebald, for example, but this is certainly not boring - perhaps just not what you were looking for. As for it being overrated? Maybe. I haven't really seen this stuff get any press outside of a few small mags and college radio, but whatever. Just because something is overrated doesn't mean it's necessarily bad, at least not in my opinion.

This band bridges the gap perfectly for me from Ted Leo's solo material to Cursive's newest record. It just kinda works for me, I guess.

Overrated indie shit. With all the critical acclaim i did not expect it to be this bad. The singer is annoying and everything else is boring.

It's 9 songs at 47 minutes. How is that way too short? It's longer than most 12-14 song CDs.
