Some bands can look back at their history and easily polish down their music to the few good songs they actually recorded. When bands release a greatest hits album it is usually a couple of good songs they were known for and the rest is still filler. For some bands an EP's-worth of greatest hits is usually enough. The Pixies are a different story. Their work is being confined to one disc here, when they easily could have made this a two disc set. But I'll digress in that greatest hits albums are made for the uninitiated and anyone who is uninitiated would not feel like paying for two CDs. Please login or register to post comments. "Into the White" has been a fan favorite for years, and I think it's a brilliant song with some of Kim's best vocal performances. I'm pretty sure 4AD isn't owned by a major label they just signed a US distribution deal with Elektra for the Pixies after Surfer Rosa. I'm pretty sure they did the same thing with Sirre for the Throwing Muses No one mentioned Nirvana for "street cred" purposes in 1996 or 1997, but now it's becoming fashionable. Foo Fighters are terrible radio rock. Nirvana, while played on the radio, certainly was not. And who the hell wants street cred by naming Nirvana as a huge influence? If we wanted 'street cred' we'd name some hardcore band you've never heard of. Foo Fighters are a MUCH MUCH BETTER band than Nirvana. contrary to what you might think, using the word "shite" doesnt make your argument any more sound Mudhoney.. so fuck off. ten years later, they still sound more exciting than every generic band on drivethru/vagrant/whatever. point is, they basically laid out the blueprint for indie/alternative. they laid the blueprint for nirvana, and even if all these nu-punk bands wouldve existed without nirvana, they wouldnt ever have had a chance to get radio play without them. nnbbn Let's not confuse "relevant" with "good." i'm not a huge fan but anyone who doesnt hear the influence they had on nirvana/weezer is a dope. 'my velouria' is the template to every weezer song written. these guys were groundbreaking and still sound pretty relevant over 10 years after the fact. good shit. Midnight Aria, Hey Midnight Aria guy, Bigwig would never exist if it weren't for Sergey Rachmaninov. even though it's true, this statment sounds hilarious: 'and they have deeper, serious songs like "Monkey Gone to Heaven"' How did this entire thread stem from one overlooked sarcastic comment? The Pixies were on a major, since the album were licenced to Electra from 4AD. 4Ad is not, and never was, a major. Their only affiliation with a major was through the Pixies, and now all the Pixies album are available from indies (either 4AD or Spin Art). So go get their albums, they did have an either a obvious or subtle influence on almost every loud Indie/Alt/Punk/Modern rock band after them. I'm going to say that you're wrong. Jeez, didn't mean for this to blow up into a whole discussion. Yes it is stupid to go all the way down the line to say "this band wouldn't exist without this band". I was just stating a fact. I'm not out to bash taking back sunday and I'm not criticizing anyone's opinions. Let's just leave it as, The Pixies wouldn't exist without the Beatles or Elvis, and Nirvana and Weezer wouldn't exist without the Pixies, and so on and so on. Hell if it weren't for Beethoven, taking back sunday wouldn't exist. never huge into these guys, but i got this album of the irc's this weekend and it's really amazing. i'll have to pick up an album or two proper by these guys when i get the scratch. Yeah, I hear a lot of Nirvana in TBS. And a lot of Pixies in Nirvana. uh, you people are retarded. Saying stuff like TBS wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the Pixies is down right stupid. You know the Pixies had to have their own influences, and those influences had to have influences. ok, well according to an interview with john from tbs, he was really influenced by nirvana, who in turn was influenced by the pixies. So it's like "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon?" any band you kids listen to most likely wouldnt exist without the pixies. even if a piece of shit band like taking back sunday wasnt directly influenced by them, i guarantee all their influences were. "I bought Sufer Rosa a few months ago and I've found it to be rather forgetable. Do they have a better album?" maybe what that person was saying was that the pixies influenced the music of some band, who in turn influenced taking back sunday. "What I meant by that is Taking Back Sunday would not be the same band that they are now if there was no Pixies. I was just irritated that some kid could yawn at the Pixies, one of the most exciting bands I've ever heard." I've got 4 for the first toronto date in November. This is going to be the longest 6 months ever. im not sure i should pick this up since i have all of their albums , including "death to the pixies" (music cock ), but i may pick this up just cause. What I meant by that is Taking Back Sunday would not be the same band that they are now if there was no Pixies. I was just irritated that some kid could yawn at the Pixies, one of the most exciting bands I've ever heard. I say buy "Doolittle," but if you weren't into "Surfer Rosa" you might not like anything else they did. Fuck Taking Back Sunday. Fucking bullshit. I bought Sufer Rosa a few months ago and I've found it to be rather forgetable. Do they have a better album? Yes, "Into the White" is really a great song. Amazing in fact. Kim Deal's vocal on it is enough for me. Even though she might not be that pretty, she is fucking hot because of her voice. Pixies rule, I think only the Beatles wrote better pop songs. Look... first off, I need to say that I am a BIG Pixies fan... I like them a ton. 4ad broke away from elektra, so the pixies are no longer on a major label "yawn... If you wouldn't buy this album merely because it was released on a major label, you are an idiot. ahem. pixies were one 4AD/elektra. major. Only a naive person would noy buy an album just because it's on a major. Ramones, Nirvana, Iggy Pop, the Pixies & many other bands were on majors & made great records. Meanwhile, there's tons of crap on indie labels...there's really killer stuff on indie, but a ton of garbage! Story of the Year is a generic so-called "alternative" band when they offer nothing exciting to the public. Indie & majors have good stuff, don't be ignorant. "yawn... blah blah taking back sunday" Hmmm, I still think Far's cover of Monkey Gone To Heaven is better than the original. yawn... the pixies are better than any other band that has ever or will ever be discussed on this website The Pixies eat total ass, Planet of Sound? more like Planet of SHIT. Yeah! Screw the major labels! Unfortunately, I think 4ad is owned by a major. Was this released on an indie label? If so, I might check it out. the pixies are one of the best bands ever, for sure, but a greatest hits album by them is as unnecessary as the one from nirvana. in the case of both bands, just get the albums. interpunk has the surfer rosa/come on pilgrim import for a great price, and you can't go wrong with doolittle. 100% agree, Pixies invented the Indie sound. The Pixies are fucking amazing. The best band ever. |
