I remember hearing about this project a few months ago and as an old fan I was little bit skeptical of how it would turn out. While Joey Cape and Tony Sly are in my opinion, two of the best songwriters in punk, I wasnt sure that it would be anything more than just slowed down versions of the same old songs...just without the rest of the band. But when Fat posted the track listing and a couple mp3's I knew this album was going to be something special. "Violins" and "Justified Black Eye" were amazing and I was eager to hear the rest of the album, which is comprised of what used to be fairly heavy songs in their original incarnations. Rock On!! !!! !!! thx. my girlfriend and me listen everyday this CD !!! can someone email me the lyrics to 'wind in my sails'? where can i find "Violet" lyrics? thanks my favorite acousic cd ever sounds emoish(i hate emo with a passion)yet very good because theyre lagwagon and nufan songs done in an acoustic way.... First off, I wanna say that it really pisses me off when people give a really low rating just because they don't like the band. Even if you don't like Lagwagon or No Use, you have to admit they're pretty damned good. Just look at where they are today, you can't get where they are by being a shitty band. For example, emo. I hate the shit, I think it's all trash, but they're good at what they do, and some people like it. Is great to know that songs such as Justified Black Eye and Violins don't go forgotten! However, WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED with "on the outside"? The quality is so poor I have to skip the song, even though the original is one of my favorites! Such acoustic projects are overall a great idea (since most of us play guitar anyway), but some more quality and recording efforts would be appreciated! And Fat Mike, yeah, don't even try, stick to piss-take and distortion... fantastic I think this may even beat houston, and thats saying something. Great CD. You can tell how great of songwriters Joey Cape and Tony Sly actually are, even though Lagwagon and No Use For A Name are amazing. I like the tracks I have heard...I love international you day... and justified black eye... but in my opinion I think they still sound like someone in a campsite playing some old punk songs on an acoustic to a certain extent... i would have liked to see (well hear) the lads play around with the songs a bit more... the songs i haven't heard before I can still tell they are punk songs at heart.... "Fat needs to release more split acoustics." grrrreaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!!! yeah! fuckin kick ass stuff. dont get me wrong, this is NOT PUNK, but its not supposed to be. Take it for what it isand you'll like it. I tghought it was great and am gonna have the cd for years. Also a big shout out to Fat Wrechords (or however the fuck you spell it) recording dudes (and/or dudettes). It must have been different recording some of those instruments as opposed to distorted guitars and a full band , but it was an excellent job you guys know your shit, keep it up! the album iss pretty good.. and i mean "just" pretty good.. i've been a lagwagon-fan for a couples of years now.. but the songs don't impress me that much as the "ordinairy" albums did.... but violet iss maybe the best song on the record... prefer the original violins version... wow, this music make me cry... I love the song ' justified black eye' The satisfaction one gets from this c.d. is too good to comment...except all i can say is..sucked in to all u anti-punk people who will listen to it and fall in love with all these classics...FUCKING awesome job Sly & Cape. I've never heard something like that!!!! If I should give you an advice: just listen this cd!!! There's no word to describe it!!! An absolutely masterpiece....I've never heard anything cooler than this album...Cape and Sly are the perfect couple...I hope they will continue the work of acoustic...For you I can only say: BUY THIS WONDERFUL DISC! After listening you're gonna have another feeling in you... you can get tabs for a couple of the songs off this cd (violins and violet) at mxtabs.net or copy this line: This is one of the best albums I`ve ever listened to !!!! a truly mental mental masterpiece by both artists. I would have to say joey is the stand out on this because of his never emptying bag of originality and choice of instruments. He has become a true legend in my little world of music. You could see the progression through the bad astronaut discs. If he just decided to do country or folk music it would still kill. a true genious poet songwriter entertainer of our time. Lag still rocks but so does this. my favorite track would be wind in your sails and violet, the new one. IS THIS AND ASTRONAUT A SAFE HOUSE HE HAS BUILT FOR HIMSELF AFTER LAG CRASHES? HE DEFINITELY IS NOT GOING BACK TO PAINTING!!! 5 stars?!?!?!?! really fuckyng goood !! skip the first 6 tracks..The caper shoud have put out an acoustic album by himself, for his style is way better. Tony just doesnt have the voice. I'm from Catalunya!(Spain) and I have no idea about how to write good english, but I understand it... and the only things that I can say about this new album is... ES KOLLUNUT!es la ostia! M'ENCANTA! The new song of Tony Sly "stunt double" is one of best song I ever heard...So I always like No Use.. and this album just increase my admiration of them...The lyric is beautiful and according to me this album prove to every one that the punk can be magnificent..So listen it! this record is more than good, lyrics have changed, music is great (love the violins) ...this is no emo, this is better, 2 sick great minds ;-) If you don't like acoustics, don't freaking buy, them...idiots. Jesus.... no use's newest stuff sucks, the last 2 albums are shit. listen to making friends, that shit was rock attack, worrd to whoever said the following: the only reason people might think that the 90s were awkward was because bands like no use and lagwagon influenced bands like simple plan, new found glory, etc. no use's early stuff and all of lagwagon's stuff rocks. i bet this split sucks though. splits alwyas suck, and acoustic shit is horrible. if i want to listen to acoustic shit, i will put on birkenstocks and go to vermont, kapeesh? Its good. Really really really good. The other moron who reviewed this split referred to the 90's as punks "awkward years". If the 90's were punks "awkward years" then surely the 2000's are punks "confused and shitty" years. I will take Lagwagon, NOFX, Rancid, The Bouncing Souls, Screeching Weasel, Green Day, Sublime, Good Riddance, Face to Face, Strung Out, etc. over any shitty Simple Plan Mall Punk or overly poetic "I'm a middle class white kid from the suburbs who hates my life and wanna kill myself" nauseating, whiney, influenced by Morrisey and the Cure, Thriceday emo bullshit. Punk doesnt even know what it is anymore and the 90's were awkward..@/??!! joeys sides sick, tonys side would be cool if i was a twelve year old girl.....or gay. you guys are going to punish joey cape for giving you a different listening experience? i like tony's side, but it sounds the friggin same. Right this tory is long but begins with me buying more betterness today. I was lying on my bed listening to room 19 when I realised how much difference there is compared to the live version. Then I totally went off track and remembered that the tony sly split out. Thinking about that I then though that asian man records should do a `lawrence arms split' between chris and brendan (and maybe neil) and I thoguht that that would have to be one of the best acoustics what could ever possibly come out. Can anybody give any details on brendans new band with todd (ex rise aginst) called `falcon' Listened to it, didn't like Joey Cape's songs but Tony Sly did an excellent job. I do feel that Tony's side of the record is how Joey should have produced his side. He's always overdoing things, maybe its the lack of good songs and he need a lot of things going on to make up for it. The overall cd is great. Tony rules! You know what, this is crap. Im sorry, but this is a big piece of crap. Im a huge fan of GOOD acoustic rock tracks but these mp3s are none of those. Its whiney bullshit crap that you could picture being on some movie's sound track. Goddamn. Don't get me wrong, I think Drag the River is great, but I preferred the melancholic air of "Who Wants To Play Bass" to DTR. It's a shame that practically nobody listens to either of them, and I hope that AM will survive. Also, Duped, Armchair played a show in Fort Collins sometime a few months ago and had one new song, which leads me to believe they're not really writing. Unfortunately unless something happens to Drag the River (which is also awesome), I think AM might be done. When AM played it was just three guys from Drag anyway (Jon singing and guitar, Chad on bass, Paul on drums). Yo. Armchair Martian is based out of Fort Collins. Lead singer is Jon Snodgrass, who's also in Drag the River. They have four albums, basically. S/T, Hang on Ted, Monsters Always Scream, and Who Wants to Play Bass? Monsters was originally an EP but then My Records rereleased it with a couple extra songs. Their first couple albums were on Cargo/Headhunter, I believe, and the second two were on My Records. And... yes, they're very good, I don't know what else to say. Check out the earlier stuff for more straightforward punky stuff, and the later stuff for a slightly more alt country/southern rock sound. Hope that helped. who exactly is in armchair martian.i had never heard of em andf stumbled across them while d/loading some bad astronaut songs last year.armchair rocks.how many cds do they have?thanx in advance 2 anyone w/ info i can't believe that in either of these reviews or any of the following posts that nobody has mentioned how great the new song is by the caper. don't get me wrong the rest of it is really cool, i dig this split for sure, but, that track stands out from the rest of the cd in my opinion. okay, this album is sooo awesome. buy it if you haven;t already! joey's half is much better than tony's but tony's songs are still great! Ok so I'm correcting myself...Lawrence Arms toured Canada last summer as well. No dates in the Great White North since the release of the always brilliant "Greatest Story Ever Told" Nice one with the Rumbleseat 7"'s. Hands down, they have wrote some of the best acoustic songs ever. Best on, cursing concrete. It's on the back to donut comp on no idea, get it. Jets to Brazil doesn't really need to make a comeback, they toured Canada last summer COUGH COUGH LAWRENCE ARMS YOU FUCKS!, plus their lp's never leave my turntable. this score is for that cd the guy a few posts down said that someone should review. good god man who seriously thought of that compilation. i should kill them. slowly. since armchair martian is primarily jon I would imagine if jon feels like writing another album he will. He's putting alot of his energy into drag the river at the moment though. And on the topic of Joey Cape, has anyone heard anything from Armchair Martian? I really loved their last cd on the now defunct My Records, and really hope that the band didn't share the demise of Joey's label. I think this cd's getting both too much praise and too much flak. While certainly not a masterpiece of epic proportions, it is a nice throwback to the heyday of the mediocre-but-loveable punk i loved so much and still like every once in a while. Though Joey's stuff is a little bit more than acoustic, I wouldn't call it Bad Astronaut, and I really like the reinvention of his songs, which were just as good on the opposite side of the spectrum. I like it. Or Jets to Brazil. They're making a comeback this summer. i thought this was good, but not great. definitely not album of the year material. that's either gonna be modest mouse, now it's overhead, starsailor, or a wilhelm scream. :D record of the year, hands down. Someone should review this cd: i would like to see that guy from larry arms do a acoustic cd. i really like what joey did with twenty seven but the rest of it just kind of... yeah i don't even remember what i listened to. twenty seven. nice one. I cant stand either if those two characters, NUFAN and LaggyWaggy dont do it for me who the fuck wants 2 reviews of the same shitty record? if i wanted to listen to acoustic rock, i'd play my rumbleseat 7"'s. tony sly's side ain't that great. but joey's is amazing....which is why i'm taking apart the matt skiba/kevin seconds split and this one and putting joey's stuff with matt skiba's for a kickass acoustic split. Listened to it again, still mediocre coming out of my stereo! |
