A scene from this past year’s spelling bee:

“Your word is: ‘Hawthorne Heights.’”

“Hawthorne Heights. H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E. Hawthorne Heights.”

“That’s correct. We also would have accepted P-R-E-D-I-C-T-A-B-L-E and C-L-I-C-H-E.”

Now, see the cheesiness, likely derivativeness of, and overall lame quality of that insult? It’s the same result of effort the band put into their Victory debut, The Silence in Black and White. At least they titled it appropriately; the former suggests a viable replacement for listening to the disc, and the latter reflects just how colorless the album is. To be fair though, the cover (again, appropriately) gives off more of a classic Game Boy-esque puke green.

The band *might* be an accomplished quintet of mediocrity in the field of whiny, poppy, mid-tempo post-hardcore if they didn’t have to throw in spare change screams, which are as forced as they come. They could probably come off like a second-rate Spitalfield at least, but with their cutesy little growls end up coming off like a third-rate Silverstein (both bands coincidentally mates on their label). Without even referencing the pop-screamo style, the band suffers in how much they water down the tempo. It’s not even summer but they’ve already broken out the sprinklers.

Lyrics? You need to ask? How about winners like “please don’t use my letters to start your fires,” “she cried all night, until the salt from her tears rusted shut her eyes,” and “so cut my wrists and black my eyes so I can fall asleep tonight or die because you kill me.”

Time-signature changes…random jazz interludes with a brass section…grindcore drums…I just wish they'd do SOMETHING to differentiate themselves. AND NO, A PIANO DOESN’T COUNT (see “Blue Burns Orange” for a minimal amount of key pushing). They offer nothing new musically or otherwise.

This isn’t necessarily “I’d rather get my prostate checked” bad, but…well, then again, at least I can avoid cancer. Hmm…be back in a couple hours.

    My Score:

    I agree with every word.

I bought the album when I was going through my 12-13 year old pop-punk phase, and even then I didn't like it. The songs were pretty much indistiguishable, they may as well have just had the entire CD as one long song. The only two songs I remember even remotely sticking out were "Niki FM" and "Wake Up Call."

It's not really even a bad record, it was just....boring. Nothing new, we've seen it a hundred times before. blah.

I can at least stand bands like Silverstein, Bayside, and Emery.

They are similar to Hawthorne Heights in the scene, therefore the statement is kind of wrong.

I dont hate HH because they're emo, I hate them because they're horrible.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at 9:27 AM (EST)

You choose to hate because you cant except or relate to HH. I happen to stand by them all the way. I saw them at warp tour and they were amazing straight up. I have the cd and i listen to it all the time. I am not a homo i dont cry when a girl dumps me. ITS JUST MUSIC and you take it too seriously. niki fm holds one of my favorite screams, blue burns orange is great. so FUCK you.

people still post on this album review? crazy... then again, here i am, typing away... this album was alright.. i would rather listen to this then a lot of other things. anyways...to clear up what i scanned through... they do write their own music, the drummer did play drums on the album, their new video doesnt make any sense, the new album is 5x better musically and 2x worse lyrically, carbon copy will do well, ellison isnt half bad, asteria is not very good, this album has not went platinum yet (stressing the yet), the singer is not related to the elephant man (although that would be awesome), and the confined records guy is a huge douchebage. these are facts, not opinions.

HH isnt "the same" or original. If you want shit music, listen to GreenDay and From First to Last! Oh thats right, people already fucking do listen to that shit! Most of HH songs on The Silence... are more like poems turned into songs, wich is fine with me. Really, no one can talk about how the badn is "shit" because no one fucking cares about your opinion, and it wont change the minds of people who do like the band! But everyone is entitled to your own opinion, so watever. Loved the CD, but not totally perfect.

Hawthorne Heights has got to be one of the WORST bands out there. Who cares if your gothic boyfriend likes them. Your gothic boyfriend is an idiot. The songs have no true meaning... "cut my wrists and black my eyes so i can fall asleep tonight"... i mean what the fuck is that, thats something a 12-year-old would write because her mom told her to clean her room. They can't scream. The guy can't sing worth a shit. And, also, I've heard a rumor (not saying it's true or false) that they so not even write their own music. Can you say backstreet boys?

I was so glad to see the review that i saw for this record. I work at Hot Topic, and i see all the little teeny bopper fuckheads buying hawthorne shit. I just wanna yell at them and hand them something good to listen to, or just give em a well deserved smak upside the head. I also have friends of mine... good friends that listen to these guys, and like them. I love em, but when they play niki fm and that stupid ohio song i want to put my beer down, get up, and throw the fucking cd player out the window. I've also seen a couple reviews of people who liek this record... let me ask you a question. WHY? Why and how would you be sucked into buying this shit? Do me a favor, and go down to wherever you buy your music, and grab a copy of "My Brain Hurts" from Screeching Weasel. See if you ever go back... I didn't, and I'm glad I didn't.

Why does this band make me want to vomit? Seriously, I keep seeing the video for "Niki FM" and it makes me feel violently ill. The lead singer should not be trying to act. He is so flat--no emotion at all. I would also like to add that from what I've heard, the lyrics are incredibly trite, and in some instances seem to glamorize suicide/self-harm. That's not healthy. I detest the screaming as well. It adds nothing to the music; in fact, I think it makes the music that much worse. I try to be an open-minded music listener--open-eared, if you will--but I don't think I can give these guys a chance past what I've already heard. Does that make me a snob?

Ohio Is For Lovers is catchy as hell, for all the simpleness of the lyrics.
Niki FM is a better song though.
I bought the cd around when it first came out and I had just ventured into the Emo/Screamo/Hardcore/EmoCore/WTFeveryouwannacallitCore genres, and at the time it sounded like a really good cd. But after listening to a shitload of other bands, This just doesnt compare at all.

Like all 3 of the other comments I've made on other reviews, I'm into this kind of music, so I hate to be the one person here that's not tatooing "Punk for Life!" on my arm/wherever.

The fact is, people are eating this stuff up. Myself included. It's crap to you, it's music to some, it's epic to few. Regardless, it's music. It's crap to alot of you, but it's music, and some of us can find enjoyment in it.

I know you're all entitled to your opinions, but there's a point when it's crosses over from having a point, to being like Mr/Ms/Mrs. Anonymous below my post jumping on the punk for life wagon with no reason as to why this band sucks.

seriously, you're like .0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000001 millimeters higher than the emo kids.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 10:37 PM (EDT)

jesus christ all i have to say is, every one of these reviews on here ends up with a bunch of assholes bashing on one or more kinds of music. who the hell wants to hear that their favorite band sucks? seriously... do you guys think you're actually going to change someone elses opinion by saying "your shit sucks"? sorry i dont think so.

anyway hawthorne heights is pretty good, even if you call them a third-rate Silverstein (which is complete bullshit) ya know what, i'll go ahead and take that as a compliment to Hawthorne Heights because Silverstein and h.h. are both really good.

this person is soooooo right! Saying a band sucks isn't gonna make a change on whether we (fans) like it or don't anymore. And i think hh, silverstein, spitalfield, TBS, and bayside rock. And so does EMO. And if you don't think so then don't listen to it because i don't care how musicly talented you might be you aren't better then them.

This band is terrible and can't scream worth shit.....for all of you emo faggot/cross dressers fuck you and I hope you all cut yourselves to death....btw..........FUCK EMO!!!!!!!!!

Anything is an opinion. Hell, history is a majority of opinions, because its based on what people think when they record and wrtie the sources and therefore might not be completely true or at least unbiased.

But in the end, for every one of you, there are aroun 1,000,000 people that hate Hawthorne Heights.

Even if it's our opinion and just an opinion, people have the right to state it.

    Posted by md40_07 on 2005-07-30 21:04:38

You can never PROVE that a CD sucks...everyone has an opinion about a CD and just because you say "this CD sucks" doesn't make me say "ohh...well in that case i'll just stop listening to it...thanks for letting me know cause i used to like it"

Posted by crazytoledo on 2005-07-27 00:34:46

MD, reivew the reiussue, since you wont give it a 1/2 star and theres no 2nd review, do it.

Everyone will laugh at you because this CD sucks. Sorry to tell you. That's not an opinion, its a fact cause it is proven to be true!

    Posted by md40_07 on 2005-07-25 22:57:40

for the last time GC and Simple Plan are gay! I can't stand hearing guys whine about how rich people complain when they are rich. And i'm tired of hearing about 24 year olds singing about how it is to "be a kid". Thank you to TheOtherIvan, this album was predictable but that doesn't make it bad at all...i like this album and many others like it

Posted by crazytoledo on 2005-07-25 13:26:30

If you'd listen to more than bands like GC, Simple Plan, and Story of the Year, you'd know why Hawthorne Heights suck. I wonder if they'd accept a review of the reissue... 1/2 stars. If HH ever gets a good review, Punk News will be a laughing stock.

Posted by TheOtherIvan on 2005-07-14 10:54:14

To agree with the reviewer, this album really isn't anything original. It's standard quality post-hardcore emo screamo whatever. Getting that out of the way, I still like this album. I got this record knowing it really wasn't anything special. I wasn't disapointed, and I was delighted to hear predictable music that I could singalong to and possibly learn on my guitar. Here's a lesson:

Predictability isn't always a bad thing.

Take for example, the new Dropkick Murphy's album. I love them. I got the album, and it was basically the same as their other stuff. But it was good. If a band knows a way to get fans and enjoy themselves, they might as well do it. That's why Hawthorne Heights can get away with writing a sub-par record and still earn a fanbase (don't forget, I actually like them).

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at 6:11 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

i like hawthorne heights, they are a band that do something different despite what brian says. hawthorne heights has a cool combination of breakdowns then speeding up and things that don't normally go together paired up, that means the poppy singing mixed with screams. i'm not saying they are fucking hardcore but they aren't as bad as the people here are saying, thats for sure. it makes it an interesting listen to hear how they combine weird tempos and it adds something to it. if brian thinks they are unoriginal i question his sexuality, and the bands he listens to because in a genre defined by screaming a band that doesn't scream so much is original right?

You watch Fuse's program that would show HH.

My point proven. Uranium is good but the rest of Fuse is literally just more of when the orignal MTV airs rock vids, just more of em.

MTV2 & Fuse Shows to Watch:

    Headbangers Ball
    Uranium

no actually, there was s shadow of a guy with a hat on, if u actually watched it instead of just seeing a couple second of it and calling it gay mabye u would have seen it, can't wait for your next quote

ive had to endure the video...

HH should die for such a shitty video. The girl thing still is fucked up...

And the hat dude is prob their gay video director or video crew member that 'fluffed' the HH members inbetween shots...

"Emo" is dead since SDRE broke up and HH is yet ANOTHER nail in its coffin.

HH are just as bad as the bands you mentioned.

The only thing I've noticed about em thats reasonable is they packaged ashit load of shit for the rerelease for fans, but hey, it all sucks.

You realize a Ohio band got signed and changed their name from A Day In the Life to a Cal. Area, then uses their old name to milk old material, and their vid for "ohio is for lovers" was petaphile, you know, 5 guys and a 8 year old girl in a house.

But then again, they were too busy with themselves...

What a coincidence, I also happen to be playing the roots of those!) and the ON-TIME drumming (what? 1/2 time?) hate this for it's lack of originality.

Come now, at least they put effort into it. I'm not saying that I don't enjoy Botch, American Nightmare or Bane but when you start rating things for originality in such and overdone genre it really just makes you look like an ass. Now-a-days, if you try to break away from punk and do something new you're "pop-punk" or "alternative" or, on occasion, "crap" but you fit in nicely for screaming about whatever the fuck you want.

The growls are absolutely horrible and completely out of place. The opening track starts off with no momentum whatsoever. The lyrics don't even work well as clichés. It's not even that this band isn't original (but they pull off not doing that well), it's that they sound like absolute shit and can't write a good song.

hawthorne heights are nothing relating to screamo. just because they scream and are a gay emo band doesn't make them screamo. and uh, what the fuck? this cd sucks. 'niko fm' is the only half decent song

Blah blah blah....you pussies are just complaining because even though HH isn't the first band in the genre, they make your favorite band sound like the 3rd place winner in a shitty talent show. I feel bad for people who actually come here for intelligent, well-written reviews.....this site is all about trashing pretty much every band that comes out.

i will have to admit that i have only listened to this album once. i know that sometimes it takes a few listens to make a decision, but my first impression was that this band doesnt do anything to stand out. they arent that bad, but they arent that good. i had heard one song online before it was released and it made me want to get the album, but now i guess i am kind of let down.

wow. i am real suprised at the quantity of negative feedback most of you have been giving. i dont think anyone is arguing the point that HH is unoriginal. i mean how many times can you reinvent the fuckin wheel? i'd give them an 8 b/c i enjoyed the harmonies that most of you tone-deaf mutherfuggers couldnt pick out b/c they are a musically-sound band. but i guess you want something a little more edgy. whatever. i gave them a 10 to balance out all you whiny musically-illeterate tools who cant score an album correctly.

    chao!

to the person waaaay below this who asked about A Day In The Life. This is NOT the same band.. the 90s adayinthelife (all one word) was a hardcore supergroup of sorts from Long Island, New York made up of ex-members of - at that time - recently broken up Long Island and NYC bands. most definitely NOT the same band! I'm sure there's a million bands out there named Day In The Life.

"this is victory's worst release yet"

Ahem. I believe that Snow Dogs put an LP out on Victory, and what a vomitous, ruckus that was. Bless those wintery canines for creating the fourth tier of crappulance in the rank of Victory records releases. The Hawthorne Heights record is strictly third tier, along with the likes of Spitalfield, Silverstein, TakingBackSomething, and well just about everything else they put out.

When is the next Snow Dogs record going to be released? I need a good laugh.

It is based on preference, of course, but reviewers review based on their own taste. Of course it's going to be biased, that's human nature.

When you write over 100 reviews, you wade through a lot mediocrity, shitty bands, as well as some good or even great things. Some bands simply are so shitty that they don't deserve an in-depth analysis, this is one such band. Why should a reviewer put more work into the review than the band put into the album?

    My Score:

Because everyone has different tastes, reviews should always be specific and in-depth. And while I don't think Hawthorne Heights are good in any way whatsoever, rating it 2 stars and saying "I wish this was mathcore" at the end doesn't really say much. You've got the standard "this is melodic hardcore", but it must be worse than that, because this reviewer likes a lot of pop bands like he this one to be.

Like Shai Hulud... I could make an entire "review" making fun of their lyrics, which I think are cornball nonsense, but you believe to be genius. When it comes down to it, it's all about differing opinions and tastes. What really makes metally hardcore any better than trendy indie dance-punk? The fact that you prefer a tough guy shouting/barking/gargling the lyrics out with heavy riffs and drums pounding in the background to a wirey skinny boy mock-crooning to what sounds like leftovers from the new romantic movement of the early 80's.

One man's porn mag's another man's clorophone gag.
