Dynamite BoyDynamite Boy (2004)Fearless Records Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: Brian (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on June 18th 2004 Plain and simple, Dynamite Boy plays mostly-throwaway pop-punk that probably wouldn’t interest you in the least. As the band self-titles their fourth full-length, the press release states, “The album is filled with radio singles and will be their most accessible release to date.” I’m afraid I can’t dispute the claim. The songs aren’t exactly sugary sweet, but the choruses contain a pop content not exactly suited for the diabetic in your life. The lead vocalist has a confident voice for the style they’re playing, at least, but that style isn’t interesting. It’s nothing new, and it’s not even bold; it’s incredibly predictable, and held back at all times. Dynamite Boy actually reminds me a lot of somewhat recent Fearless signees Sugarcult’s first effort. For some odd reason, the intro of the second track “Satellite” sounds suspiciously like the opening riff of “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.” The potential of a cheesy dime a dozen act ripping off another cheesy dime a dozen act doesn’t shock me, though. Plus, if you can’t guess upon first listen where every hook, every vocal rise, every chorus line is exactly placed in the opener “Suspended Animation,” then you’re probably just an unlucky guesser at worst. “Zap,” which Dynamite Boy contributed to last year’s Fearless promo sampler, is probably the best song here. What the hell is everyone's problem? These guys are ten times better than the rest of the filth that is modern pop-punk. Maybe, I'm just partial being I'm from Austin, but come one?! Oh c'mon, they could do better. They live in my hometown, and they are nice guys, but this last album, woah... Dynamite Boy's new self titled cd is one of my favorite albums. When has a band combined the catchiest of pop punk melody with hard driving 1970ish power chords and solos and pulled it off. D-boy does it better than anyone else. The harmonies are perfect, the lyrics are provoking and honest, and it just rocks. If the album doesn't convince you, catch them live, and you'll see why I rave about them. This review is complete crap. Buy the album, see for yourself. Oh, and to the idiot who wrote the review. "Satellite" was written roughly 2 years ago, long before the darkness. There's no rip off here. Maybe you should do some research before you go bashing it. I streamed this, it's not as bad as you think, but your right, not terribly groundbreaking and the hooks are very predictable, but catchy none the less, i remember 2 years ago they used to open for RxBandits and they weren't too bad, but after that it seemed like they dropped off the face of the earth...guess they're back I love greenday. why did they plant the seed of pop punk in the youth of america??? Joke or not, The Darkness bringing back an attitude that 70's mainstream rock was good is one of the worst things to happen to music in recent times.-BSD I liked their first two albums. I didn't really like their last album. I wanted to like this album but honestly It sucks pretty bad. I'm a fan by the way. So when I say it sucks, I mean it sucks. I really wish this album was more like there first two albums. I like this cd. Not that I had high expectations for it. If these guys sped things up a little bit and shortened the length of their songs they'd be really good. Joke or not, The Darkness bringing back an attitude that 70's mainstream rock was good is one of the worst things to happen to music in recent times. definatly gunna have to agree with you on the Queen statement. "The darkness are a dime a dozen?! Wow...were are all the others hidden at?" that review sucks. i like this one... even though it's not my style at all.. the songs (espcially the chours) are catchy and well performed.. but not a great release.. acceptable they play the horribly gay emo-pop that millions of other bands do, but they are less shitty as humans than most of the kids who do it now. for what it's worth the Darkness-sounding song "Satellite" was written quite a while ago. i remember them playing that on tour in mid-late 2002. i like this band and think they write catchy stuff. nothing too ground breaking though. Yeah for the most part this album is something I wish I could forget. It deserves about one listen, with a few skips. I did enjoy that long since forgotten song... until it refused to end. they've got a few pretty cool songs like Little Bobby, but for the most part, they're mediocre. i'm sure this album will be the same. "good pop punk if you like pop punk or like power pop punk it's good" good pop punk if you like pop punk or like power pop punk it's good.... otherwise skip it and go listen to your metal I actually bought their old album. Yikes, I wish they'd let you return albums. Their cover of "in the Jungle" is wicked though His name's Sean Dynamite I believe (what the fuck?). i dunno... i dont think this album is that bad. its got some catchy hooks, even if they are predictable. yeah..the singer is a big dude..not 22 Jacks big..but pretty big wow, this album is awful for real. i'd like to hear anyone defend it. i thought their first 2 cd's were ok, standard greenday type power pop punk, but this shit is so gayly emo and the songs never fucking end! it also sonds like its trying to be overproduced nfg style, but they don't have the budget to do it , so instead it sounds cheesy. i think 3 of the songs have the same chorus too. This score is for The Darkness. Thats too bad that the album got kind of a bad review. I saw these guys live once and didnt think they were too bad. They were actually pretty good live. Everytime I see this band's name I get excited and think its "Kid Dynamite". Score is for Kid Dynamite. They're from my hometown, and have played with countless of my friend's bands, and have been around for YEARS, and I still don't care about them. They put on solid live show, but what band who's been around this long doesn't ? Oh wait, they haven't been around that long. Considering they're like Bigiwg or Unwritten Law in their revolving door policy. There is ONE original member, and I think he might have gotten kicked out if I remember correctly. Oh, and the Satellite track has been around as a demo and a fully recorded song for at least a year and a half. | Features
