Three songs in three-minutes, 11-seconds. Hey, what do you expect? It's The Locust, bringing us some more fine chaotic, unpredictable hardcore/grind coupled with electronic/sonic noise at intermittent intervals. The first two offerings, according to the press release, first were heard on a split with Jenny Piccolo. Also featured is "Red", a song from a comp entitled 'Cry Now, Cry Later Vol.4' - for all those who care. Please login or register to post comments. This EP was the first I had really listened to the locust. I must say, this is a lot different than their other stuff. But still ace. Mateo is gay and so is anyone else who hates The Locust. Don't these guys have AIDS yet? Haahaha. That's funny, because John Zorn... the locust are horrible. i would much rather spend my time listening to jazz than this shit. Gee, good point. I'm convinced. They played really fast... That's not very hard. "What about the Bad Brains? Superb musicians, good enough to be a jazz fusion band. Yet they chose to play what would later be known as hardcore... So, what do you think of them? Good musicians choosing to play simple music..." I'm sorry but in your reviews, you site VanHalen as the epitome of "great rock solos", thus opening up grounds for debate. Ill buy this cause I want a square CD I love how everything I say is half-joking, yet, it still rustles BSD's feather's like no other. Yes isn't math rock, they're prog. Try to learn about these genres before you throw their names around. Wow, you put a lot of words into my mouth. I just said that all those bands are great musicians that couldn't have played the music they did without being talented. And I didn't say Black Sabbath's earlier stuff. I said "War Pigs." You know the one with the extended guitar and bass solos at the same time? Yeah, that one. But all of heavy metal is built upon the premis of minimalist blues rock. Most all of Black Sabbath's famous (early) stuff is very easy to play. And what did Van Halen really bring to the table? About as much as AC/DC. If I cared that much about musicianship, I'd listen to the school band. I'd listen to light jazz. Me. Hence my grand appreciation for The Locust, Van Halen, Joan of Arc, The Blood Brothers, and "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath (only that song, though). All are bands that have brought something new to the table that could not be accomplished without sheer, utter musicianship. Seriously, though... Who actually listens to rock n roll because they want to hear talented musicians? Van Haggar, maybe, but just read David Lee Roth's autobiography, "Crazy From The Heat." That guy was punk rock. three one g should have a released a Jenny Piccolo discography instead of this. they were a much better band. Oh yeah, I'd also like to thank Van Halen for being the first outspoken pro-Reagan rock band. GO BLUE ANGELS! YEAH! Noise/art-rock and hardcore are two different musical forms. OK, so no one has the knowledge to answer my question, i take it? i still cant believe people pay money for this shit "Are the Boredoms metalcore?" Dillinger Four = possibly the best punk band going right now = 10 Jesse, is your Van Halen obsession a joke? I hope so. That band is even worse than AC/DC... Melt Banana aren't hardcore at all... I mean, they of course integrate grind into their sound, but they don't have enough to do with song structures to actually be like that... "The next Minor Threat? You say it like that band was talented and hard to match...sure it was revolutionary for it's time, but it's just 3 chords and Ian shouting "Fuck You!" over the simplest double time beat ever. " Locust, D4, NFG aside. Wow I finally agree with something Jesse has to say... You cannot fuck with Dillinger Four. Wait til you see em live. Genius. D4 is probably the most intelligent, most clever, well written "punk" group out there today. Read the lyrics. Listen to the change-ups. If it sounded like NoFX to you, you were fucking deaf. Almost every NoFX song has a double time beat. Only one song on Midwestern does. Already, you've been proven an idiot. I don't recall anyone ever calling D4 a hardcore band. From the way you people hyped them, I was expecting the next Minor Threat when I bought Midwestern Songs... All I heard was a slightly harder NOFX... And modern NOFX, not oldschool punk (good) NOFX. "D4 sound like NFG playing very unconvincing versions of old school punk songs." There are several things that really strike me about DA. Dave Witte's drumming is great and I think Jon's vocals have really good range. A lot of vocalists shift between shrieks and growls, but he does it smoothly and hits extremes at both ends of the spectrum. Aside from that, I love their energy. Or WERE, to be more correct. Because DA are an amazing band, even though I fail to see how they're that unique aside from the guitarist. I think everyone is missing the point here, the CD is square. "the locust is, in all seriousness, quite possibly the most important band currently operating under the punk umbrella. D4 has nothing on this band. They don't even play the same type of music. I'm lost on these guys. Its organized chaos when I want music. two things one I already have both of the original records so I am scoring this off those songs. It scares me the how intelligent some fans of The Locust are... Because in all honesty listening to this music makes me want to pull my own teeth out to dull the pain in my ears. "No mention of Hewhocorrupts? Blasphemy" WE, the locust is, in all seriousness, quite possibly the most important band currently operating under the punk umbrella. Yeah I was thinking of their first incarnation. only one bassist in the locust. "I would like to see any of you fucks even attempt to play any of the locust songs correctly, because when you try you will look like fucking jackasses trying to keep up/play the right fucking thing. Its almost immpossible." This score is for Mandingo's "!five" album. i can't help but notice that there's some faulty reasoning going on here. first of all, just because a band is proficient with their instruments, they're automatically good and everyone should like them? and just because you can't play in instrument, you can't say something's not good? that's ridiculous. secondly, the locust wants people to hate them - ok. so they'd be happy if every single person hated them and no one bought their cd and they had to stop playing music and get regular jobs? yeah ... i'm still trying to figure that one out. honestly though. how much does this thing cost yes, but you can listen to it more than once (IF you LIKE it, that is), but you only have to open it once...ay now there's some logical reasoning... ok i exagerated. it takes 1 minute to unwrap and put it in the player and push play bitch. still too much time in comparison to the amount of time the cd actually lasts. It takes you 3 minutes to unrwap a CD, dude? somebody way down at the bottom got it exactly on the money with "they're pissing people off, so they must be doing something right." the locust WANTS you to hate them, and that's why i think they're genius. so all you fuckers would pay money for a fucking 3 minute cd? i hope you dont pay more than 3 dollars. fucking takes you longer to unwrap and put it in the cd player than it does to get through to damn thing yes, my dear BSD, you are correct - it's Scott Hull of Pig Destroyer and A.C. AN is good but I thought they were a Pig Destroyer side project. this is really, really old locust stuff...in my opinion, before they actually got good. not horrible, but not nearly as good as what theyve become I hate the locust "Janelle - are you the same Janelle who writes for Punk Planet? If so, I think you're waaaaay off base on your characterization of people who don't like Prince." JAY, all i have to say to all of you sorry fucks who think that the locust is terrible, and say that "this band or that band" is better. One thing i gotta say. I would like to see any of you fucks even attempt to play any of the locust songs correctly, because when you try you will look like fucking jackasses trying to keep up/play the right fucking thing. Its almost immpossible. also, my intent was to not give them 4 stars... damn album score drop down menu fucking up my shit!! i was just discussing this band today with someone else who doesn't like them and we both agreed that maybe we just don't get it. they just don't seem like there's a point to anything they're doing. i'd take a band like Hewhocorrupts over The Locust any day. they are sooo ill! but cool because they make their own thing!! ok, the music is ill.. :) No mention of Hewhocorrupts? Blasphemy I don't know how to use the more or less symbols. And my list is more of a chain of influential bands (not grindcore, more just fast hardcore). My comment didn't show up. Well anyway, I did the The Neos < Deep Wound < Siege < Extreme Noise Terror < Napalm Death < Capitalist Casualties < Spazz < The Locust To some person below me, you beat me to the oh-so-mothafuckin-obligatory melt banana comment. Melt Banana > Discordance Axis > The Locust Napalm Death>Phobia>The Locust Oh, I forgot to say, silly me, Nasum > Anal Cunt. Need to maintain those standards boys. I love/hate how every review of a grindy band turns into a namedropping, 'this band is better than this band!' farce. why the fuck would you pay money for a cd only 3 minutes long? Discordance Axis > CODCl sorry to burst your buuble buddy but #12 looks like you and sawtooth grin arent grindcore, they are just tech metal bands with grind influences. the locust is grind....strange grind but grind none the less. Good grindcore is more like circle of dead children....mmmmm Very happy to see someone mention Scrutum Grinder, that is a great band I'm sure the majority of the kids on here haven't. "Let's all be honest here, this band is terrible. At least you tried. Janelle - are you the same Janelle who writes for Punk Planet? If so, I think you're waaaaay off base on your characterization of people who don't like Prince. i don't know how much it costs...sorry How much would this cost? I mean, three minutes long? It'd probably not even worth buying. I'll take Scrotum Grinder over the Locust any day. Everyone used to hate this band. Good to see an honest review, though. I'm picking this up. Anchors- i hope you checked out From Ashes Rise... Totally gimmicky, but a good collectors 5-inch for any locust fan. The Locust rips. i do enjoy this band. And their live show puts a smile on my face. this band renews my faith in music. because it pisses so many people off, they must be doing something right. I'm interviewing them for my zine. An Epitaph band for a tiny, tiny zine. Just another reason to love them. Let's all be honest here, this band is terrible. This record is quite a departure from newer Locust material. "Red" is downright sludgecore stuff. This is really cool to own, if only to see the progression the band's made over the years. i kinda want it, but it's like $6-7 for three songs. i really like the locust though. I didn't think this would play in my stereo, but it did, and I'm glad. I got a record from these guys in a sampler. I don't mind some chaos grindcore whateverthefuckcore but this stuff.. i hate it. Good review. No thanks. |
