Three songs in three-minutes, 11-seconds. Hey, what do you expect? It's The Locust, bringing us some more fine chaotic, unpredictable hardcore/grind coupled with electronic/sonic noise at intermittent intervals. The first two offerings, according to the press release, first were heard on a split with Jenny Piccolo. Also featured is "Red", a song from a comp entitled 'Cry Now, Cry Later Vol.4' - for all those who care.

The EP starts off with the merciless title track, a fed-up-with-society lament to which any of us who've ever been disgusted by humanity and society can certainly relate. This bleak look at our culture is carried over to the next song, the incredibly fast 29-second "Coffin Nails", which has a VERY Conflict feel (well, not musically, but certainly lyrically), as the guys bemoan what has become of this once "fertile earth" and how if we carry on our present course (which seems all too likely), we'll be ruined. They end it all with the profound lines: "When there is no grain to feed the butchered cows/When there is no grain to feed yourselves/Then you will see that money can't be eaten." The third and final track is the most diverse and harrowing, beginning with sputtering electronics and hectic drumming, turning into a slow, sludgy, oppressive, doom-like dirge with tortured, drawn-out vocals, that every now and then is broken up by sudden bursts of speed.

Most likely a challenging listen for some, but for those tolerant of extremes and fans already of the infamous troupe, 'Follow the Flock, Step in Shit', is a great release from a band that continues to defy conventions. Oh yeah, on a weird side note, the disc is a tiny square, sure to piss more than a few people off...

Am I taking this the right way? Are you saying that the Bad Brains played simple music? That's the funniest shit I've ever heard. The Bad Brains ripped the hell out of the basic guitar bass and drums setup. I don't think there is anything simple about what the Bad Brains did.

    My Score:

Yes isn't math rock, they're prog. Try to learn about these genres before you throw their names around.

And, as much as you'd like to think that music was created in 1978 with the inception of one of the crappiest cock rock bands ever, you'll be hardpressed to persuade me that any Eddie jack off solo can match Chuck Berry, George Harrison or ANYTHING Mott the Hoople made. And what about Bob Dylan? Another great guitar player. ... Telling me that I have to appreciate an antiquated, PLASTIC, mainstream idea of what heavy metal is to appreciate music is pretty fucking offensive stuff.

I won't support/listen to VanHalen for the following reasons:

    They're pop dribble
They simply don't rock hard enough
Flashy guitars don't mean shit when you can't write a tune
    They supported the military

    My Score:

Wow, you put a lot of words into my mouth. I just said that all those bands are great musicians that couldn't have played the music they did without being talented. And I didn't say Black Sabbath's earlier stuff. I said "War Pigs." You know the one with the extended guitar and bass solos at the same time? Yeah, that one.

If I were talking about math rock, I would've brought up the fact that Yes' 90125 is one of the greatest albums of all time.

If you can't appreciate Van Halen, you can't appreciate music. Simple as that.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at 1:59 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

But all of heavy metal is built upon the premis of minimalist blues rock. Most all of Black Sabbath's famous (early) stuff is very easy to play. And what did Van Halen really bring to the table? About as much as AC/DC. If I cared that much about musicianship, I'd listen to the school band. I'd listen to light jazz.

What about the Bad Brains? Superb musicians, good enough to be a jazz fusion band. Yet they chose to play what would later be known as hardcore... So, what do you think of them? Good musicians choosing to play simple music...

Tempo changes? You act like math rock hasn't been around for at least 15 years. You fail to notice that what the Locust are doing isn't that dificult and isn't that new. It's an extension of powerviolence.

Complicated? I guess, but so is replicating the random notes beginners hit and call solos.

And through listening to 3 Van Halen LP's, I've been convinced that no matter how many hours they spent thinking they were great at their instruments, they were incapable of making good music. It just isn't there, and it makes me wonder what you think they bring to the table.

Me. Hence my grand appreciation for The Locust, Van Halen, Joan of Arc, The Blood Brothers, and "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath (only that song, though). All are bands that have brought something new to the table that could not be accomplished without sheer, utter musicianship.

Van Haggar, maybe, but just read David Lee Roth's autobiography, "Crazy From The Heat." That guy was punk rock.

Seriously, when it comes to rock music, there is almost no band that was more talented than the original Van Halen. David Lee Roth's vocals tore shit up, while Eddie's guitar playing is legendary. Not to forget Alex's complex as hell beats. And Michael Anthony played the bass. No one really cares, but he did his part. Just listen to the opening of "Hot For Teacher," or my personal favorite "Running With The Devil." That shit is balls to the wall.

D4 is probably the most intelligent, most clever, well written "punk" group out there today. Read the lyrics. Listen to the change-ups. If it sounded like NoFX to you, you were fucking deaf. Almost every NoFX song has a double time beat. Only one song on Midwestern does. Already, you've been proven an idiot.

The next Minor Threat? You say it like that band was talented and hard to match...sure it was revolutionary for it's time, but it's just 3 chords and Ian shouting "Fuck You!" over the simplest double time beat ever.

There are two bands that you cannot fuck with. Dillinger Four, and the original line-up of Van Halen (post 1984).

Here's the big myth of metal guitar playing: Grindcore is hard to play.

The Locust are an exception because I believe they have 2 bassists, but most grindcore is standard barr chord/power chord thrash sped up with slower breakdowns.

It doesn't take a naturally talented/skilled guitar player to play as fast as ENT.

sorry to burst your buuble buddy but #12 looks like you and sawtooth grin arent grindcore, they are just tech metal bands with grind influences. the locust is grind....strange grind but grind none the less. Good grindcore is more like circle of dead children....mmmmm

Very happy to see someone mention Scrutum Grinder, that is a great band

Would The Locust even be considered grindcore? I usually base the grindcore sound more around bands like Phobia and Excruciating Terror

This record is quite a departure from newer Locust material. "Red" is downright sludgecore stuff. This is really cool to own, if only to see the progression the band's made over the years.
