| Worn ThinRemnants Of What Could Have Been2003 Youngblood
Review by: FortyMinutesWest See others by this writer Youngblood (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on July 20th 2004 I was getting a little annoyed with what was passing as hardcore these days, after hearing stuff from Madball, Skaretactic, North Side Kings, etc. I was wondering if I’d ever see another band in my review pile that actually played good hardcore. Leave it to DC to produce a band that would answer my question in full. Forming in late 1999 or early 2000, Worn Thin plays hardcore that is catchy, but certainly not toothless. With their sound finding a middle ground between melodic and aggressive, Worn Thin reminds me of Turning Point with a bit of modern edge, sort of like Count Me Out. The vocals immediately stood out to me, even from the first listen. Carlos’ shout is powerful, without sounding overbearing, or like quasi-tough guy thug. Sure, shouted choruses have been done by a million bands, but when done well they can still sound amazing. The melody makes these songs incredibly memorable, even the vocals have a melodic quality, although there’s not any true singing to speak of. This release is discography of sorts, compiling the bands earlier material on one convenient disc. Although the lyrics are somewhat cliché, the delivery really makes all the difference; a lesser band couldn’t have pulled it off so well. What could they do to top this all off? Why, a cover of “Little Friend” by Minor Threat, of course. And why not? Unfortunately, Worn Thin appears to be planning to break up at the end of the summer, so catch them while you still can. Hopefully they can put out another release before they disband. Although this release is only a compilation, is still an extremely solid collection of songs, that would make an impressive full-length any day. I love this cd, but the best song on this is the one with the guy from striking distance on it....one of the best bands to come out of DC in awhile...melodic like GB and In my eyes with a twist of new hardcore in the vein of comeback kid and bane...worth it for the video and enchnced cd alone...this smokes I heard these guys have some punk dude in their band . . . maybe that's why they suck. Sounds a bit like Count Me Out?... and a Minor Threat cover to boot? Rock ,and or, roll. I'll definitely have to check this out. Worn Thin has all the deception of being decent until the screaming begins and doesn't cease. Seriously, what is so great abou listening to lyrics being forced through a sluice of teeth that disrupt any form of a sentance through the microphone. "Definitely, but they were one of the earlier bands to start going beyond "don't do drugs" and got into "Hardcore pride!" and I think that's why they had a huge lyrical influence on ECHC bands." Definitely, but they were one of the earlier bands to start going beyond "don't do drugs" and got into "Hardcore pride!" and I think that's why they had a huge lyrical influence on ECHC bands. "I mean, they weren't as hard as the other three big influences on modern hardcore (Youth of Today, Sick of It All and Earth Crisis), but they weren't the most influential for their music. It was the way they got their message out, rather." I listened to Earth Crisis the other day...I couldn't believe that I forgot how goddamn awful it was. Bleagh, it was terrible! Christ on a bike! Is this a civilized discussion about hardcore on a punknews messageboard?!?!? No sarcasm? No namecalling? I mean, they weren't as hard as the other three big influences on modern hardcore (Youth of Today, Sick of It All and Earth Crisis), but they weren't the most influential for their music. It was the way they got their message out, rather. Oops, didn't see your other comment, I see what you meant now. It was an honest question, I still don't understand why you grouped them with those other bands. Another thing, was that an honest question or were you attempting to "show me up" about hardcore knowledge? GB was one of the first bands I listened to, so you should pick some newer band like Shai Hulud. I know nothing about them, yet aimlessly criticsize them for the album I've heard by them. They were faster and harder than most hardcore bands, and they were part of the whole "Youth Crew" positiveXedge thing that a lot of hardline/negativeXedge bands grew out of. Like most kids who are into the modern metal-hardcore sXe scene, the only two older bands most of them have heard are GB or YoT. Speaking of hardcore, BSD, I've been meaning to ask you this: Yeah until the day I get put on staff and sent shit through the mail to review. Forty's about the only guy on this site outside of Aubin who really knows hardcore in and out. These guys are good. "oh i know why 40, you don't know shit about hardcore" my band used to play with these guys all the time, they're real stand up dudes. johnnydanger please support that, forty has proven himself to be very knowledgeable about hardcore... oh i know why 40, you don't know shit about hardcore This shit sounds dope, yo. Def. be checkin' these here mothafuckaz out. |
