| The New Transit DirectionWonderful Defense Mechanisms2004 Some
Review by: Brian See others by this writer The New Transit Direction (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on July 27th 2004 Disappointment, frustration, and indifference: the three things that hit me the hardest when The New Transit Direction graced my stereo with their Wonderful Defense Mechanisms. The debut full-length from the reserved, melancholic indie rockers finds them lacking the ability to harness their own. While TNTD is certainly creative in using their guitar-driven ballads to try and get all points across, most of these points simply stop midway. It’s clear they’ve got the creativity to make something that grabs the listener by the throat only to calm them down with soft, cantering melodies, which they do occasionally, but their annoying overindulgence on awkward start/stop rhythms fronting mostly bland, boring moments kills any chance for what could be a great cohesiveness. Think of early Northstar with an emphasis on slow, Midwest rock over Long Island pop-punk, a more filled-out sound, aurally, and more filler, physically. Jon Congleton (90 Day Men, The Paper Chase) does a wonderful job at the knobs, though. WDM’s producer/mixer expands the atmospheric conditions of the mellowest moments on the disc while leaving the more rocking moments as is and mixing up the effects on the vocals well. Sure, it’s got its aforementioned flashes of brilliance; take the nifty splashes of riffing across “To the Sea,” the distorted vocal yelps in opener “Fictional,” the drum stick-snicker of “Pieces,” or the more accessible, albeit sincere chorus of “Houston.” Times like these are scattered all over the album – why can’t they all be in the same song? And if they could, would a song this strong appear more than once? I know there are some great tracks waiting to be written from these guys, but seeing as how this is only a debut, their patience to do so suits fine as a wonderful defense mechanism. Saw TNTD recently....the show kicked ass... the guys in the band are pretty cool, too...the albums good but not exactly my favorite...but hey, they are fairly new so I'll definitely be expecting some really great stuff from them later on. OOOPS - I meant to give them 5 Stars!! This C.D. is AWESOME!! It's one of my favorites and i have listened to it a hundred times. I think they have something special and hope they make it big someday - if only they could get some kinda decent promotion! These guys ROCK! i liked this album alot! i think tntd should be up there instead of the used! I got this CD at the release show ,and I must say it ROCKS! The New Transit Direction put on a Awsome Live show ! And what a great light show ,the strobe was DOPE during the Drummers solo, DOPE ! I dare you all to go and by this CD and listen too it ,and don't be surprised if it's the only CD you listen too either...... "Saw them open for the used. Gay. i saw these guys maybe a year ago on tour with Form of Rocket. they're not bad, but Form of Rocket is way way way better. i saw them with the used too and was very impressed but im let down by the cd to the "guy who saw them open for the used" -- you're gay. this band rocks Some Records released No Division. They also signed Form Of Rocket. Saw them open for the used. Gay. maybe it's just me, but i love this album. i've been waiting a long time for it too....TNTD rocks. i like some midwest rock and some long island rock. but i do not appreciate early Northstar. the second album was tight though, polyanna. |
