Kane HodderA Frank Exploration Of Voyeurism And Violence (2004)Suburban Home Records Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: Brian (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on July 30th 2004 Loaded with indie rock, hardcore, and seemingly obscure movie references, Kane Hodder is that art project that’s always getting second place in the school competition. “Aboard the Leper Colony” comes grooving out of the gates with the dance hall-sung, PSA repeat of “I’m gonna give it to ya” and you half-expect the band to bust out into “Heart Attack American” as you hear The Bronx’s signature guitar work lacing Kane Hodder’s own foundation. The rip-off is avoided once the hook comes, but the vocalist does continue this warning, screaming the same line of “I’m gonna give it to YOU!” in a similar fashion. But then a short while later, you find the band slowing things down to delve into pure indie rock, at some times close to a well-produced version of At the Drive-In’s more punk-rooted days. And it continues like this for the rest of the six-song EP. For the life of me I can’t figure out a single movie they’re referencing. I suppose I’m just not hip enough to the world of cinema, but for the hybrid indie rock/indie film buff, I’m sure you’ll have a buttload of fun picking up on the allusions. Actually, they don’t do so much as reference as they use films for metaphors to the violence, hate and negative occurrences experienced in the world. So lyrically, they’re basically obtuse in most places with little hints at what’s going on, with lines like “you could never ever win 2000 years out of mind and now it’s 15 going on 35” and “what side says ground-war / what side says astral plane?” The changeups in style are pretty drastic here, but the moods are consistent enough where they don’t feel misused or out of place. A lot of times, they do mix the two into single parts, likely out of spite. Still, A Frank Exploration of Voyeurism and Violence is mostly a science experiment of Jekyll and Hyde-proportions; it’s a two-faced monster that’ll claw your face to shit only to sing you gently into the coma. Jason wasn't afraid of the water, per se...in his nightmare, he was reliving his drowning...psychotic murderer or not, that's traumatic. This band's singer and guitarist used to be in a band called Sorority House Rejects. They played a similar mediocre style of punk/pop/hardcore/emo. It has been cool to see thier growth as song writers and finally find a way to blend these syles under the name KANE HODDER. Jason was never afraid of the water. He's been in and out of it from Part VI to VIII. The screen writers for that piece of shit Freddy Vs Jason made that up. i was always partial to michael myers. i love when the camera's on him and he tilts his head to the one side. what obscure movie references in A Wilhelm Scream, outside of the name itself the only thing that makes this band cool is the Kane Hodder Refrence the guy who played Jason in most of the movies. If you really wanna get down with obscure movie refrences in bands...check out A Wilhelm Scream. Eh.....who the hell wants to watch either one of those shitty film series. Give me the original Halloween....the only good slasher film. I think that's why I've always preferred the Nightmare series to the Friday series. Just the absolute total lack and denial of any continuity whatsoever in Friday movies. This score is for "Jason Takes Manhattan." I thought he was afraid of water?! How the fuck did he escape the boat and make it ashore? this was recorded/released waayyyy before the bronx. it was just recently re-released on a label but they have had it touring with them for quite a while. and in response to the person below, kane hodder is in fact the man that played jason in the later friday films - i believe from friday part 7 or 8 until jason x. he didn't play jason in freddy vs jason, however. i just like this band's name way too much. best jason vorhees ever. (and a really nice, albeit FUCKING HUGE person.) Not that im a fan of the films or anything, don't ask me why i know this....but isn't kane hodder the guy who played jason in most of the friday the 13th movies? lol yah, this album kicks ass. the full length that is coming out at some point through cowboy versus sailor is even better. | Features
