Although many people presently listening to ska music probably don’t have a clue who Hot Stove Jimmy is, they have probably heard them if they have ever purchased a compilation from Jump Up Records. Does a band by the name of the Cougars ring a bell to anyone? If so, then you have also heard Hot Stove Jimmy, because it’s practically the same band. Hot Stove Jimmy formed in the early 90s ska movement and released their second cd Salute in 1996. This is perhaps their best release and it was pumped out only a year after their 1995 release called Take Your Time. With this being said, Salute boats a remarkably better production quality and more mature musicianship, not to mention the addition of alto sax player Jeff Vidmont. Jeff was a friend of the band and had played previously with two other Chicago ska acts, the Monsignors and the Tango Wedding Band, and was received with open arms. Ug and double ugh...I shouldnt complain I stole some of their gear Say what you will, HSJ's later material was maturing into something way better than the cougars will ever be, but it was definitely influenced by the Blue Meanies. Despite any promotion, the cougars will be forgotten for their unoriginal musicianship which is sophomoric at best. Have they really matured any since the days of ska that they are oh so embarassed about.....I think not! They have already been discarded as a RFTC rip off band, which is no surprise! Word of wisdom, quit while you're ahead...except you're not! ESKAMOS 5 of the 8 Cougars are from HSJ. But from what I gather when you change the drummer, bass player and a guitar player with new members that never played ska in the first place the band ceases to be ska. Thus, Cougars. Matt's probably about as embarrassed by HSJ as anybody is of the bands that they started in fucking HIGH SCHOOL! And what the fuck does that matter anyway? I saw HSJ a couple times and I thought they were pretty bad ass. shhhhhh!!! don't tell anyone. Cougars are even more amazing, but a different band. ska / punk has been dead so long that it's corpse is rotting - good ska is still very well alive, although underground, just waiting for some kids to mix it up with another style and make it some crappy trend and we can all jump on that bandwagon - maybe some sort of mix with metalcore/ska or emo/ska/disco or what about gansta rap ska - just remember kids - any band that uses the word ska cleverly in the band name is really fucking cool and are destined for many great things well technically he didn't say ska has been dead for as long as rick james. the just said as dead as rick james. as there can't really be varying degrees of death, the point is valid. "ska is about as dead as rick james." "ska is about as dead as rick james." a lot of the ska/punk bands really sucked big time - except Donkey Punch because of their awsome name and that's the only props they get from me. Hot Carl Jimmy is what they should've called themselves, they would be so much better. Hot Carls are fucking awesome. Jeez louise, ska is so serious! No wonder it died. excuse me...i misread your post. however you are still wrong. ska-punk has been around for since the late 70's. once punk started getting big in England, a lot of british "ska" bands started mixing it in. it was called 2Tone. then in the 80's ska got big in the underground in America. bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Operation Ivy, for example, were doing ska-punk during the mid/late 80's. again, please get your facts straight before you start talking out of your ass dear asshole a few post below me, Cougars rule, as did HSJ. I do prefer Theme however with its evil nature. As for the review, I like how you compared it to a carnival, cuz we used to call it circus ska. Heh. Uh, they're called Cougars, not the Cougars. "I saw a recent interview with Matt the singer of the cougars, and he seemed pretty embaressed about his involvement in the ska scene...pretty funny" yeah, nobody cares about ska. let's ignore the sold out shows that have been gracing chicago for the past year. ska is a style of music, just like any other, it had a surge of popularity, just like any other, and that popularity died down and it has now found its niche, just like any other. morons... HSJ blows the shit out of Cougars. I saw a recent interview with Matt the singer of the cougars, and he seemed pretty embaressed about his involvement in the ska scene...pretty funny Being from chicago I saw this band play seberal times, and they always put on a good show. I wouldn't consider myself a ska fan by any means, but I'm gonna say the two greatest ska-punk cd's of all time(what was it about 4 or 5 years) are BLUE MEANIES-full throttle, and HOT STOVE JIMMY-the last cd whatever the fuck it was called. That being said COUGARS blow the shit out of HOT STOVE JIMMY. In the end not that great of a cd by an alright band of a type of music no one gives a fuck about. BUY ANYTHING FROM COUGARS, do not support ska...ska = punk rock for dorks Good to see this reviewed here....but Theme For A Major Hit, their second and final album was much better. Darker and scary like the Cougars now, but brilliant in design.....everyone should check it out. ska is about as dead as rick james. |
