Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

I just can't seem to find a stereo loud enough to play this CD correctly. Every time I get the player to full blast, I feel like I need to keep clicking it up a few notches.

With their second full length album, The Icarus Line delivers almost a full hour of gritty guitars, distorted bass, pounding drums, and howling vocals through thirteen tracks cultivated in the original glory of rock n' roll. While the influence of The Stooges blatantly shines through, comparisons to contemporaries like Spiritualized and Queens of the Stone Age could also be made.

Stand out tracks include the grinding "Spit On It," the three song epic "Kiss Like Lizards/Getting Bright At Night/Big Sleep," and the swaggering "White Devil." As soon as the first chord of "Spit On It" explodes from the speakers, you know you have a rocker on your hands. This song makes distorted microphones cool again while restoring your faith in screaming guitar lines. "Kiss Like Lizards" starts out with a 3/4 riff jam session, builds into a rock out noise session, then drops tempo to fade slowly into "Getting Bright At Night." As part two in a three song saga, this nine minute song starts out as a slow bass line until it begins to build with the floor time and the repetition "I won't fall in love anymore." It continues to build for six more minutes until the drums fall out into a climbing bridge, when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, it explodes into heavy bass riffs, heavier drums, and spaced out guitars, ending with the repetition of "Never give up on me, baby" until it drops into a feedback from the guitar, and kicks into "Big Sleep." Taking cues from "Getting Bright At Night," the steady, heavy tom rhythm comes in and builds until it breaks into a drum beat that reminds me of the intro to The Who's "Baba O'Reilly." The rest of the song continues to rock until it eats your face. After the first break in music for twenty straight minutes, "White Devil" rips right into a blues-y swagger, complete with wailing saxophone solo.

The near flawless production only polishes the layered song writing. The distinctive fuzz on "Party The Baby Off" tweaks out the track, while the reverb on "White Devil" pushes the spaced out, drugged up swagger that permeates the speakers.

This album leaves you wanting more and wanting it louder. An instant classic. The future of true rock and roll may just lie in the hands of The Icarus Line.

The music is good but the lyrics are pretentious and mediocre at best. I know Joe C., and he tries WAY to hard to be a rock star in suffering.

Originality is an oxymoron in itself, this is something that shoild be clear to all here. Can this argument about 'nothing new since Black Flag' or whatever. It's no secret that Penance Soiree owes a debt to bands like Jesus Mary Chain or whoever you care to mention, but is the ablum any good? For me, it's alright. I prefer the original mix of 'On The Lash' that appeared on the 'Underworld' soundtrack (shit film, good CD, check it out), but tis a good record all the same.

They were shite at Reading this year tho.

the Icarus Line NEVER sounded like Drive Like Jehu. that's absolutely fucking ludicrous. i say that because i'm a huge fan of both bands and i remember reading that comparison in some review of Mono a few years ago and was completely dumbfounded. it just shows a complete lack of musical knowledge. i'm assuming that's where BSD magically pulled it out of his ass. honestly, why are most vocal about music you've never even heard? it's painfully obvious man.

the icarus line in a nutshell: a mix of the Birthday Party, the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Jesus Lizard, and the Stooges.

    drive like jehu? no.

    My Score:

Before it sounded like Suicidal Tendencies, now it's more grounded in being less retro and basically a modern, more distorted, less sloppy thrash/hard hardcore affair with TECHNO DRUMS. Yes, hugely distorted techno drums, and distorted bass and distorted vocals and distorted guitar.

I have a few guitar parts recorded already, and a few drum parts. The problem is mixing them, but that will soon be solved. They're on my CPU, so if you ever want to check them out, my AIM name is ReagansDeadCock.

I'm totally re-recording this thing with a different concept from before so I can embarress myself as little as possible. The bass player could barely play the first time and I wasn't as proficient at playing open E chords, either. Nobody but 5 people heard the old demo and they all agreed that it needed some tuning up... Since I watch NYPD Blue and Law and Order all day, it might be a while.

Sure, there are plenty of lyrics as good as their. And song titles? What do those matter? I for one hate the latest long song title craze. What new is going on musically?

I want a new genre of music, not punk shit. Noise rock, I guess... But that's still just random notes and a screechy singer.

Tell me what our modern equivalent of the Beatles, the Who, and the Rolling Stones are, or even the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, and the Clash. I'll explain to you how many bands did it all before them. Really, I think punk and hardcore have been dead since Black Flag went metal along with Discharge.

Just because it's on V2 doesn't mean you have to hate it on principle.

This is one of the only bands keeping rock and roll alive today. I mean, we're talking about a band who, when playing at a Hard Rock Cafe, broke open a display case and tried to play Stevie Ray Vaugn's guitar.

It's not inventive. It's not a new style of music. But then again, rock and roll was never about originality. In fact, every early rock and roll song just followed the 12 chord blues progression. Despite what any of you try to say, this is a revitalist record.
