Published on August 10th 2004

I'm getting pretty sick and tired.

I'm sick of hearing that entertainers shouldn't express political opinions; I'm tired of hearing that actors should stick to acting and comedians should stick to comedy. I'm sick of hearing that musicians should stick to music and stay out of politics.

And I'm tired of hearing that dissent is unpatriotic.

I certainly don't recall the chorus of Republicans when their greatest president went from making movies co-starring monkeys to the White House. I don't remember them saying that when country singers were stumping for them. I don't remember them saying that when comedians were playing homophobe on their behalf.

Well, maybe Fat Mike got sick of that too, and unlike me, he has a record label, a bunch of musician friends, a dog and I think he's having a baby; all of whom will probably vote Kerry/Edwards in November. And I imagine he hopes you will too.

Even the apolitical would have the admire the list of bands he has lining up to this end. The first Rock Against Bush had an impressive list of contributers, and one could expect that the second would end up being a collection of leftovers; a B-sides compilation even. But, thankfully, the second volume of the compilation is at least the equal of its predecessor. Opening strong with an great unreleased track from Green Day, and including downright classics like Operation Ivy's “Unity” and Jawbreaker's “Chesterfield King”, the track listing fails to disappoint. The list of strong contributions continues with the inclusion of the Foo Fighters covering the Angry Samoans, the Lawrence Arms crackling track, and a strong donation from the always impressive Hot Water Music.

There are certainly some less than perfect tracks, like the disappointing rendition of a Lagwagon staple by Yellowcard, or the inclusion of a few too many previously released tracks, both in the form of album tracks and some fairly pedestrian live versions. These small missteps serve to dull a little of the shine on the disc, though not fatally. And of course, who could forget the lack of a track from Propagandhi, who certainly had something to say (even if they're completely wrong about he causes of the East Asian crisis.)

Still, any weaknesses in the music are certainly overcome by a stronger DVD presentation this time around which features a greater variety of material. While the music videos don't really carry as much weight - it's pretty hard to top Bad Religion and Strike Anywhere for talent or political muscle - the addition of a diverse range of political pieces and some comedy sketches certainly compensate for any shortcomings there. Take the sharp and biting “campaign commercial” courtesy of Will Ferrell and ACT which actually manages to be funnier in it's scant few minutes than Ferrell's last film.

While this second compilation certainly doesn't surpass the first in terms of sheer volume of material, the addition of a greater variety of music and DVD content certainly makes for an entertaining and fun slice of political activism. Considering that liberals and democrats are often pigeonholed as an opposing bunch of stuffy academics and pot smoking neo-Marxists, Punk Voter's centrist and inclusionary approach is quite admirable. Insofar as the record purports to be “Against Bush,” it is important to remember that the record also stands for something as well; Mike and Punkvoter have managed to unite a diverse range of people into a coherent cause and both that diversity of artists and diversity of opinion is well-represented here.

So, despite the kids who think that he should just shut up, Mike isn't listening; he's not listening to those who won't vote, but bitch anyway. He's not listening to the kids who cut and paste GOP talking points on punk websites. He actually did something and put his money and his mouth and his friendships into something he believed in and frankly, what is more patriotic than that?

yep we hate bush rah rah rah,
let's just let the iraqis terrorize their woman and children, kill and torture hundreds each day, let's let them break international law and go against the UN, let's leave them to hatch more plans of terrorism and even encourage them to make some nuclear weapons, let's not stand up for the free world, sounds like a plan to me
it's not that their 'train of thought' is slightly different to ours, it's that it in many ways promotes oppression of tens of thousands of their own people AND encourages anti western sentiment that has and will in the future breed terrorism and attacks on our nations.
it's all very well to hate bush but get the facts right first, imagine what would have happened if he had back away from these terrorism issues and let unstable, unpredictable nations trample over the most developed culture/nation in the modern world.

A BOAT TRIP IN IRAQ ON A REGULAR SUNDAY AFTERNOON

Today is a Sunny Day in Amsterdam. I wonder what it's like in Iraq today. Do you think that the sun can take away the war smog? I guess it eventually will but today I can't think of anybody in Iraq that would enjoy a boat trip like we would in Amsterdam on our canals. Unless you're name is GWB of course and you're cruising on a military boat doing some 'price shooting'.

Here's how it goes, a particular family with some friends on a regular Sunday afternoon in Iraq, enjoying a boat trip: (GWB) "Hey Dickie, look what I've got here. A 200 pound missile to blow that school away. What do you think?" (DC) "Well Sir, ehm ... I don't know. It's a school you know, there might be children in there." (GWB) "Ooh come one Dickie, they're all terrorists you know, and we need to get them before they get to us. Let's shoot the suns of bitches." You gonna help me or not, are you with me or against me?" (DC) "I'm with you Sir, you want me to give it to you while you're doing some killing?" (GWB) "Yeah Dickie, I remember why I made you come up here, you're the best" (KR) " Georgie, one sec" (GWB) "What's up Karl, you can trust Dickie" (DR) "You want me to taka a pause Karl?" (KR) "No you fool, I'll tell you when to stop." (continues advising) "No, it's not that sir. Your father wants to watch. He is not that vivid anymore you know. The Viagra is not yet working properly, so he wants you to wait a bit to get ready" (GWB) "Of course dad, no problem, do you want Arnold to give you a hand?" (GBS) "You're the best son, let's kill em" (KR) "Arnie, get over here, you've got work to do" (AS) "Yeah, ooh yeah" (GBS) "You're a wonderful kid Arnold, you know that? If I didn't have my son I would want you to step into my shoes"

Suddenly: BOOM BANG BANG, THE SCHOOL IS BLOWN AWAY.

(GWB) "Daddy daddy I got them. BOOM BANG (GWB) "look at those colours, isn't it beautiful?" (DC) "Aaaah ooooaaah" (GWB) "Don't stop now Dick or you'll never smile again" (GBS) "Aaaahoooee aaauuhhh oooo. You're really good Arnie, do you know that?" (KR) "This is good fun don't you think Laura?" (LB) "It certainly is Karl, do you think you can get me some more of those pills? I'm at the upper deck with somebody but I can't keep up with her you know, you wanna do that for me?" (KR) "Yes madam, coming up, we've got plenty. Hussein, get over here, now! Bring me that bag, the big yellow one and also the green one with the stamp 'Columbian's Finest' on it" (RG) "That's good, I want some too. Those girls like me. I wanna feel a bit more confident cause they're so young and I can't communicate with them" (LB) "Don't worry Rudy, we've all been there, go ahead, make yourself comfortable." (KR) "How's everybody doing? Are we having fun or what? Can I get you anything? It's purely natural you know. We've got all you want. We own that shit. Did you all see that? Did you see what Georgie did?"

Then a helicopter approaches the boat and everybody gets nervous when somebody steps out of it.

(OLB) "You don't owe a thing Karl, remember that! What did he do? Did he manage not to fuck up for once" (KR) "Yes Sir, he did, well, I believe he did." (OLB) "It's about time isn't it." (GWB) "I did it Sir, I bombed a school full of terrorists" (OLB) "Bugger off you lunatic, a school. Get off my boat and take your daughters with you before I really get mad. (GWB) "Yes Sir, Mr. President." (OLB) "I'll see you all Tuesday at 0900 sharp in my office. You'll meet with JFK. I've agreed to step back and he's going to take over the rudder in November.

All I have to say is this entire discussion is pointless. I've been a citizen of the US, Canada, and Poland over the last 18 years of my life. No matter where I go its the same thing, attack people with slightly different trains of thought. No matter where you are, no matter what point in time it is on the history of the Earth, there was always a government manipulating you. Thats what the government is, the business of controlling your thoughts, and a profitable one at that. It lets the rich get richer and makes the poor poorer, no matter what country your in, you might not realize it but your government is taking advantage of you, any human when given that much power is bound to abuse it. In the case of the United States presidency, its just trying to vote for the lesser evil. I say we put Danny Devito in office, he'll settle these conflicts in ways previous presidents couldn't...One visit with a baseball bat and we'll have ourselves a peace treaty.

Fat Mike owns Fat Wreck, the label this is released on, so if any profits are to be made, it's by him. I'm sure the artists on this CD don't feel like they are being exploited to make money for Fat Mike, that just wouldnt make sense. And if I recall correctly Mike decided to start the punkvoter/rock against bush tour with money from his own pocket. It makes me sick that somebody tries to do something good and people attack him. Spreading awareness is better than doing absolutely fucking nothing.

On a side note, if bands like guttermouth think they're so "punk" or act like it their music sure doesn't reflect it. I'm sure songs like "Pee in the Shower", "Cram it Up Your Ass" and "Hotdog to The Head" have deep artistic meaning... fuck punks used to be artists... now the whole scene is non-existent.

IRONY - A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect.

I was using irony and satirical comedy to describe my comment about the sex pistols being around in 1984. i would point out the fact that nearly 90% of us were not even a twinkle in our parents eye then (1976). That being said, i will leave you to the mind boggling task of defining satire and or wit.

There are some really solid tracks on this cd, and just because they don't support bush doesn't mean you shouldn't like them. I myself don't agree with their cause, so i won't purchase the album, but the cd itself is pretty alright.

Now to the moot point of how ridiculous all of us American people are.

    - None of us really cared that Saddam Hussein killed 1.5 million Iraqis during his tenure as president of Iraq. That is over 1500 times more than the amount of americans that have died in Iraq. There is the rampant problem of AIDS, mass famine, civil war, and no right to personal or religious freedom all over the rest of the world and we are worried about securing medicare for all of us.

    - In the USA, there are nearly 18,000 deaths a year because of drunk driving, nearly 27,000 americans have died since the war began, how come no one is bringing up a tougher policy on the legal alchohol limit.

    - The jail time for a second degree murder (unpremeditated) is only 17 years. That means that a muderer can walk the streets after a measly 8 years. Over 40% of murderers who are released from jail become repeat offenders of a vicious felony (rape, murder, arson, attempted murder). What about a stronger policy on capital punishment.

    - To whoever posted that other countries are following in our 200 year reign of democracy, no their not, their democracy my be formed like ours, but it is more a communist regime, or the ruler of a king or prince. i.e. - China, cuba, Sudan, (former) Iraq, Egypt, and Korea to name a few.

    - How come everyone complains about outsourcing. The problem is we only care about us. Who cares if someone in india has 8 children, 3 of which starve to death because their parents, both with doctorate degrees (and smarter than 80% of US citizens) can't even get a part time job in a factory.

    - Not many will agree with me here at all, but i believe this with my heart. Has anyone seen a partial birth abortion. As the babies head crests through the cervix, a tool similar to a meat thermometer (with a sharper end) is jammed through the skull of the child, the brain is sucked out through the tube like a straw. The skull of the dead fetus is crushed so the head will ease through the cervix with no problem, the dead fetus is then disgarded into a "biohazard" trash bin. That is WRONG AND DISGUSTING. Even if you agree with a women's right to choose, the partial birth abortion rule needs to stay intact.
Here is a point to exemplify why government is torn on this (dems and reps) - Laci peterson - 7 months pregnant - murdered - husband is charged with 2 counts of homicide (mother and unborn). understandable as to the 2 counts. (partial birth only begins at 6 months)
Lori Hacking - 5 WEEKS pregnant- if police find her body- her husband will be charged with 2 counts of murder. How is it that democrats believe it is murder to a baby at 5 WEEKS but do not believe it is a baby AT 8 MONTHS. confuses me.

vote your heart. These candidates are touting health care reform, education increases, tax cuts and welfare reform. The same things since '82 when reagan was voted in. NO ONE HAS CHANGED ANYTHING SO WHY BELIEVE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT (whoever that may be) WILL

    ALL POLITICIANS ARE LIARS

On the issue of business... It's funny how Kerry wants to save Americans from outsourcing, yet he wants to import prescription drugs from Canada for cheaper costs. I'm sure that helps companies like Pfizer right?

Both sides are hypocritical; both are better candidtates than Al Gore; neither is worthy of being president.

However, I'm still voting for Bush. Screw Iraq... their own government will kick our troops out soon enough. I would rather have a president who supports my views back home. And yes, I am religious, and hold to the beliefs of my religion. Its funny how you can be open minded about everything until the name of Christ comes up.... gg punks.

The Green Day song is awesome, so is the Larry Arms song. The Lagwagon song is really cool. Will Ferrel is one funny dude. And it was nice to see the little paragraph that Blake from Jawbreaker wrote in the liner note. Does anyone know what's going on with that guy, or Jets To Brazil for that matter? I know I'm not the only one hoping for a Jawbreaker reunion...

only about three of you motherfuckers no what you're talking about when it comes down to politics. 99.5 percent of the time you idiots go on rants that you don't know shit about especially jones the bones and bsd, I hate bitching, but watch some CNN or NBC before you guys go on your next ignorant rant. This goes out to everybody, stop listening to everything fat mike says go out for yourself and find the information out on the two candidates and pick the one that best suits your beliefs and your way of life whether it be Bush or Kerry. I was at a local show around where I live the other day and this band which was made up of young kids about 16 years old and three of them were wearing NOFXFAT WRECK CHORDS shirts started talking about how Bush had no idea what he's doing and that everybody should vote against him which led me to believe these kids had not the slightest idea what they were talking about. So to all you ignorant kids, next time you're about to go on one of those ramblings, think to yourself is what I'm about to say a load of bullshit.

try me motherfuckers i just did a report on these fuckers for my creative writing class. please i want you to

"Just one quick correction for the poster below: Fat Mike doesn't, and never has, endorsed John Kerry. In fact, campaign laws restrict Punk Voter from advocating a Presidential candidate. Where have you seen Mike endorse Kerry? I can answer that: You haven't. Ever."
In a race where there is two people running slandering one is BASICALLY endorsing the other.

Yeah sure, how about all the kids out there who didn't give a shit about politics until seeing Fahrenheit 9/11 and then it's all "omfg whut dubya is fag0t lolol cuz moore fucking OWNED him, lol."

Jesus Christ, propaganda is propaganda, and too many people are now convinced that anti-patriotism is the cool thing to do. I'm not Pro-Bush at all, in fact I think he's quite stupid - but then again, every president has faltered at some point....... and I still stand by the idea that I'd rather have Bush as president than Al and Tipper running the country.
