MU330 / Suburban Legends / Gylbotslive in Minneapolis (2004)Asian Man Records Reviewer Rating: User Rating: Contributed by: ZLNFTOC (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on September 9th 2004
Despite a slew of a beguiling ska anthems, MU330 couldn't profit off the late 90’s third wave revival before the genre “died“ out. Unlike their peers, they failed to receive mainstream radio play though their video for “Tune Me Out” was played on MTV...for about ten seconds. Then again, album sales and popularity have never been hallmarks of MU330’s career. Rather they have been renowned for a frenetic live show composed of incredibly catchy psycho ska that often deviates from conventional girlfriend/relationship archetypes with songs about racism, European tumult, insomnia, and some very important lessons from Catholic grade school. So naturally, I was inclined to see MU330 along with relative newcomers, but no strangers to a live venue, the Suburban Legends, who just may usher in another ska revival. It would prove to be a very interesting night and perhaps prove that ska had never died rather retreated to the underground as the vast commercial appeal of the genre had dwindled though it’s diminished fan base is as enthusiastic and rabid as ever. Well I can sleep tonight knowing the exact minute that MU330 went on. I hear the MU330 bass player is in a new band with two guys from The Rabies (ex-STL punk). I believe it is Nick and Jason. They are called The Bantam League. I gotta say, the show up in Duluth kicked more ass. 1). Cover was only three bucks. can't go wrong. 2). I got to hang out with the group outside on the street forever and chat about this, that and the other, and 3). there really wasn't a stage, so Dan and everyone else were a foot away from the croud. And they played My Favorite Show here, too. kicked ass. Seeing a buddy of mine running through the band to get to the bathrrom because he did too much blow and got a bloody nose was pretty entertaining, as well. Oh, I almost forgot, Dan was once asked in an interview about "Stuff" and had this to say: "That song was written over 11 years ago, when I was in high school. I'm 28 now, and as I look back over my song writing career, that song is definantly not one of my proudest moments." Hey everyone, thanks for all the comments. To the first guy who posted, the guy didn't manage to jump all the way through "LA." And yeah, I was sort of bummed that they didn't play "Stuff." "Favorite Show" was actually listed as the last song on one of the setlists I nabbed from the stage but they decided not to play it. Lastly, I really think the Suburban Legends will become famous. Just give them time. Suburban Legends are going to be huge someday. They are not as "ska" or "punk" as some people may want, but they have the catchiest hornlines of any band I know, good guitar riffs, an amazing stage show, and I haven't been able to get their CD and EP out of my CD player. Plus the guys are super-cool. The cover song wasn't impromtu, they played it in Houston too. Also, I talked to the fill in bass player and he told me that the band doesn't enjoy playing Stuff live, though he couldn't say why. Oh, and My Favorite Show was played in Houston also; it was the closer. Score is for that ridiculously detailed set list. Where's "my favourite show"? I've always liked their slower songs more. Score is for hurricane Frances, which managed to get the MU330/Know How/Skif Dank show cancelled on Sunday night!!! what the heck is this 4th wave of ska? this is the first i heard of this. do tell more or did this guy just make this up Ahh MU330 didn't play "stuff"?! |

hey author,
hi my name is john is not a napster parody...
My name is John Gelber and I live in Los Gatos California and am currently 18 and a senior in high school.
back to my story... the summer after my sixth grade, I went to see Less than Jake with Mike Park (owner of Asian Man Records and my best friend's neighbor - how I know him) and Dan Potthast was in the car on the ride home.
Being an mu330 fan even at the ripe age of 12, I repeatedly told him how I loved mu330, and asked him how he felt about napster and online music. On the ride home, my older brother (also in Mike Park's van) said "hey dan, why don't you write a song about John" as a joke. However, nothing is a joke to Dan.
Lo and behold, the song was written, and recorded, and played in concert. Hi my name is John, and I saw mu330 on napster dot com.
