I still remember the only fight I ever had in my life. I must have been about 12 or 13, but to me it still feels like it was a life/death struggle. Fortunately the teacher seperated us, but I remember how that schoolyard became all quiet during and right after the fight. People were ecstatic and just loved it! I didn’t though, I remember I was crying like a little baby afterwards, even though I think I beat him up more than he did me (probably wishful thinking?). Anyway, since then, I’m proud to say that I always ran away from fights, and I really think it’s not because I was a coward or was afraid of getting beaten up; it’s just that I think that violence is only useful in very limited cases. I’d first want to emphasize that I didn’t grow up in a violent environment like Boston and I have had a pleasant, normal life, with a fulltime job and a comfortable house to live in, and therefore some might judge I shouldn’t have been reviewing this.

The DVD is a raw documentary, with adapted music, about the Boston underground Hardcore scene, and more specific about the F.S.U.-crew (Friends Stand United) that arose from legendary Boston band SSD. This underground scene has evolved to a worldwide phenomenon. As one of the co-founders witnesses, it was the guy in SSD who took the DC Straight Edge (cfr. Ian McKaye of Fugazi) idea to Boston, but instead of only spreading morality, these guys started spreading their fists to anyone who did harm to any member of their clan. The main idea behind all this, seems to be that there’s a bunch of tight friends who will collectively beat up anyone who touches one of their members. A masked guy, standing in front of the American Flag first explains what the anger is all about, and I can only agree that there’s a lot of bad things going on in many places. But the facts that multibillion corporations destroy independent stores, that expending Universities dimolish housing projects and that new middleclass neighborhoods displace the artists and the poor won’t be solved by fists in my eyes. In fact, not one of these evildoers involved will feel any pain through this behaviour for sure. Quite remarkably though, at the end of the DVD, there’s this guy “Chabo” who plain out says “Fuck all the Politically Correct kids and mall-punks”, and most of these guys show no sign of political or cultural involvement whatsoever. They just brag about how fucking awful their lives have been, and they admit having impulse control problems and an affinity for violence.

OK, maybe we should understand why they are acting like this, considering the fact that life hasn’t been good to them, because of malfunctioning governments, corporate interest and bad social security and whatnot, but I don’t see violence as a way to resolve any of this. Furthermore, it seems like all their aggression is focused on other kids, instead of towards the ones who they hold responsible for their not so enviable living. What’s the point in that?

Interviews with founders of the F.S.U.-crew and bandmembers of Dead Before Dishonor and Blood For Blood don’t get me anymore supportive of their causes either. Maybe it’s true that people act like sheep and follow a trend too often, but isn’t that exactly what they are doing themselves by excluding everyone who thinks different from what they believe in, or who doesn’t belong? Their own crew has probably more unwritten rules and regulations (although I’m sure they claim to not have them) than a kid that listens to a popular punkrock band and dresses up like his friends or bands that he watches on MTV. As a matter of fact, I find it hard to believe that certain people will visit their shows, just to start a fight or to harass them, considering the size and posture of the interviewed people. They sure as hell don’t look like the feable wuss that would be the center of mockery at a show. Of all the fights that were taped (and they are numerous), there’s not one explanation of what the fights are about; you just see a bunch of people brutally beating up one person, including a beating up of superstar Moby, but I have no clue what started it or what the guy really did wrong here. As stated, they would be solely responsible for Nazi-punks and jocks to stay away from hardcore and punkshows thanks to some good beatings.

There’s some extras included, featuring old live performances of Wrecking Crew, Ten Yard Fight and In My Eyes. They show how intense these shows can get, and I have no problem with guys going nuts in the pit (I even think it’s great), because everyone there knows what to expect when you attend these shows. Also, you’ll be able to see how “underground surgery” is done to a guy with a large gaping wound. Yep, these guys have their own doctors in the house, because of course there’s no way they can afford professional help. It reminded me of Rambo, but this is real!

When I first read the announcements of this DVD by Crosscheck Records, I mailed them that I didn’t like to add releases to our calendar that support violence and beatings. They then claimed that I should see the DVD first and then judge it. Well, I’ve looked to it thoroughly, and all I can conclude is that to me personally this group of people is not that much better than a bunch of nazi-skin punks. Maybe their motivations are somewhat more understandable, but there’s so much similarities with fascist movements (the agression, the intollerance, the gothic printing they use, their flag-adoration, their urge for self-protection, …) which leaves me with the bitter conclusion that I wished they were not a part of the punk scene. In my knowledge I never witnessed a fight once at a punk show over here in Belgium. In fact, our little punk community over here has always been proud of the togetherness and fun they share at concerts. That’s what I understand when I speak of “unity”, and I always bring that up when I talk about punk music to other people.

I’d advise you to buy this DVD if you’re looking for reality streetfights and cruel images, although I must say most of the tapings are amateuristic and recorded in the dark. Actually, it’s almost as spectacular as the reality-TV served on our screen everyday. I didn’t find good arguments for this behavior, but maybe that’s because I never got into these unpleasant life-circumstances. Nevertheless, I think these declarations of F.S.U. members sum it up pretty well: “Given nothing, we are taking everything, making this world a place of our own” and “There’s a big misunderstanding here: It’s not being a bully or about hating bullies, it was to destroy bullies in union”. Now, with this negative review, I just hope I won’t get featured as a victim in the 3rd episode of these Boston Beatdown series that should be coming soon. I told you before that I am a pussy, but I think these guys are pathetic. I still have no clue why Chad from New Found Glory (shouldn’t he be that mall-punk?) ever endorsed this release.

    thank you for this.
i live on cape cod, about 2.5 hours away from boston, and here we have our "gangs" although we live in a docile environment, these people exist seemingly only to make shows SUCK.
but i respect your ballsy review of this, for it's absolutely true.
boston is loaded with skinheads and hardliners just looking to fight eachother for control.... of what?
when they're older working as cubicle monkeys they'll get it.

These FSU fuckheads remind me an awful lot of the Courage Crew. I live close to Cincinnati and I see Courage Crew assholes at a lot of shows and they are just absolutely despicable.

We have FSU types in KC, too. They're all grossely overweight thirty year olds who rock out to bands with lyrics like "the strong will survive". Also, Nazi Skins are not the status quo. I'm against their beliefs, and think that they are assholes, but you're wrong. Also, you're wrong about DC. College kids? Maybe. But DC (as I've pointed out before) had everything from all-black hardcore to skinhead street-punk. All I've ever heard that's been huge in Boston has been this tough-guy bullshit.

Violence is not the answer. Also, the FSU doesn't just fight jocks and skins. Like a below poster said, they don't even let guys talk to certain girls. They hit first and ask later. Hardcore? Maybe in the 80's. If anything, though, all FSU is doing is perpetuating the status quo by promoting intollerance, ingnorance, stupidity, hatred, and violence.

That's where you're wrong, just read some interviews of Black Flag or Minor Threat to understand that hardcore ideal is against physical violence. Hardcore shows, unfortunately, may be violent but that's not the point or this is not hardcore but just stupid tough guy music.

By the way FSU is a crew. Everything from the imagery to the semantic (and the banner "join the crew" on their site) show that they are a crew (and like you said "crews are fuckin gay" )

"That's bullshit. Black Flag's shows may have been brutal, but I still say that beating the shit out of everyone around you is stupid. The main difference being, when the original "beatdowns" occured (in DC, back when Choke was probably still rocking to KISS), they were against a status quo/group of people who were against punks. In-fighting wasn't what it was about.

Getting drunk and beating the shit out of people? That's for assholes.

    Violence is for assholes"

it IS against a status quo. The big FSU fight 10 years ago was against Nazi Skins always goin to shows and fuckin up the shows. Other then that its mostly Street Fights, FSU or not, against other college kids lookin to beat on some punks and start street fights.

You dont even know what your arguing about. You never seen it, and even if you did, you still wouldnt get it and stroke your huge self rightous boner about ho0w you are the anti-violent ghadi of hardcore.

Why the hell dont you gusy fuckin get it? FSU doesnt go around Bsoton beating up random kids, and pickin out kids and beating them up terrozing shows. The only fights that happen is when some shit head or drunk frat boy shows up at a hsow, and start punching small hardcore kids in the head.

The fights on the DVD are mostly non-FSU kids in drunken street fights with Frat Boys. The FSU fights they actually show, are mostly FSU guys workin as bouncers on Lansdowne St, cause its there job to throw out drunks who are causing trouble.

And the DC fights werent an orginiazed fight against some status quo you dipshit. Most fo the fightsd were skinheads and punks and frat kids, basically it was all 15-22 year olds beatin on each other, same thing in Boston, same thing in whatever scene that has a violent hardcore band that draws.

But this BSD kid has is head so far up hsi fuckin ass, he just dont get it or will even watch it.

The DVD isnt the greatest thing in the world, but you retards that havent even seen it, think its way fuckin worse than it is.

Hardcore is not safe, hardcore is vioplent. Thats why all the hardcor eheroes quit hardcore bands and started Post-hardcore, indie bands, they outgrew the violence.

Its youth, its agression, its a release.

Its a documentory of the last 20 years of hardcor in Boston, fotoage of old shows, and some random street fights. Read the storys about Black Flags touring years, they are way fuckin worse than whats on that DVD.

It hardcore, its not going anywhere.

FSU has done more ot protect the scene than anyone i know. you dicksd that keep quoting Kid Dynomite dont realize thats exactally what FSU and most Boston Hardcore kids do. the Young kid hittin people thinkin hes a tough shit, gets a slap, relaizes wjhats up. The 23 year old drunk frat boys that go to a Blood for Blood show, run up fornt and start out rightin beatin on people and punchin dudes in the face cause they dont fuckin get it, get tossed.

DOnt get me wrong, crews are fuckin gay, and i hate young kids in crews goin to shows being tough tryin to make a name for themselves, but FSU are all older and i respect them all, cause they dont pull that shit.

Why dont you make a DVD of how you think things SHOULD be, cause these guys made a DVD of how things ARE.

All the video has is footage of toughguys beating other tough guys.
80% of the footage is fights ont eh streets with hardcore/punk kids and frat boys. All Bosotn has is a shit-ton of College kids and punks. So they all get drunk at partys on Mission Hill, and fights break out between kids constantly. Its been going on since before FSU, for over 20 years.

This is just footage and a documentory on the harder side of hardcore in Boston. Boston has ALWAYS been known as the hardest danicng town.

Its not gonna change, its not going anywhere, watch the DVD and youll see no one is coming to get you or ruining your little scene.

Some hardcore is posi, some negative release. I like Bad Brains and Fugazi and Kid Dynamite as much as i like Blood for Blood, Black Flag, and Sheer Terror. Its all hardcore to me, and sometimes i wnana be constructive and posi, and sometimes i wnatt o beat the hsit out of everyone around me. Thats hardcore dude. Watching my dad beat my mom wasn't funny either. I was really upset that these kids never give any explanation as to why there beating up people and it's always 6 on 1 how fair is that. It sort of reminded me of when I would get beat up by the football team for not liking rap music. Be it self-righteous, these individuals are all gang members who're inevitably going to be put in life threatening situations if their actions persist.

If they chose to be slightly more reasonable, they'd change the banner on their website from boasting commentary to a flickering 'FUCKING RETARDED'.

i read some of the threads on the boston beatdown site. these guys are unreal. no shit their lives are rough, they're grownups acting like children, who the fuck is gonna show them any respect except for each other. losers. maybe its cool to be a tough guy in high school but when you're 30 and acting like that, you're just a joke.

"I still have no clue why Chad from New Found Glory (shouldn’t he be that mall-punk?) ever endorsed this release."

I'm not defending him or anything, but didn't he endorse it as a documentary? I thought that was what he, bane and serveral other bands said about this release. I mean, that's like saying someone loves bush just because he tells people that he likes farenheit 9/11. It's a documentary. However, the fsu fuckers saying that this release rules does not see it as a documentary but a promo-movie of themselves.

This is the first review ever where absolutely no one likes the item in question.

Bad music or good, NO ONE likes senseless violence, and the excuses they give (big business, yuppie urban renewal) only cheapens the protest of people who are REALLY fighting against such things. Beating someone in the street "to teach him a lesson" is just gang-mentality crap that, as far as I know, is kept mainly in Boston (thank god). I know here in the midwest, Coalesce shows never ended or were interrupted by the insecure gestures of your favorite locker room rapists.
