Does This Look Infected? caught me a little by surprise: Here was a band that was best known for rapping, synch-jumping, and showing up on MTV every five seconds putting out a record that was fast, loud, and considerably metal-sounding (not like Morbid Angel or Mastodon metal, but you can imagine). At the same time, it was still poppy, overproduced, and melodic more in the vein of tour mates Good Charlotte and New Found Glory. The result was practically entertaining, and it wasn’t hard to see this band evolving into their own fairly unique niche of pop metal.

That being said, their newest album Chuck is somewhat disappointing, and a significant regression from their last album. It starts off with a bang as “No Reason” and the lead single “We’re All To Blame” burst out of the gate with energy, rapid-fire guitars, and the love-it-or-hate-it (or think it’s okay) melodicism of lead vocalist Deryck Whibley. An early miscue in the oddly Oasis-sounding and built for radio “Some Say” is quickly rectified with the “The Bitter End”. This song may not only be the best song they’ve ever written, but a good example of what can make this band so interesting: breakneck speed, heavy riffage, and Metallica-influenced yelling (also, 3 out of 5 metal fans agree: the guitar solo shreds). However, the acoustic intro to the awkward “Slipping Away” starts the downward spiral of the second half of the album. The songs are slower, and the band can’t seem to decide what direction they want to go in, both musically and vocally. Mid tempo, low key sections bog down “Pieces” and “There’s No Solution”. Whibley’s voice works best at full throttle, and comes up short in the more mellow parts of “Pieces” and the also-somehow-Oasis-sounding intro to “88”. The fact that there are mellow parts at all really takes away from the true strength of this band.

Lyrically, the mood is more somber than the smart-alecky themes we’ve come to expect. “We’re All To Blame” is the obvious standout, and is the only song on the album inspired by their recent hostile experience in Congo. It also should be mentioned that the title of the album is a big “thank you” to Chuck Pelletier, because, as stated in the liner notes, “without him, we’d be dead.” Chuck sports some pretty nice artwork as well, with camouflage colored images of kids and weapons.

If you are still under the impression that Sum 41 is a joke band or a Beastie Boys-wannabe, give some of these songs a try, and you may be pleasantly surprised. No one can deny the band’s musical talent, and the more serious lyrical themes are a definite improvement, but the lack of consistency kills this album. The highlight of Sum 41’s discography is going to come when they fully embrace their metal influences and make a straight-up metal album, and sadly Chuck misses the mark.

well, this shit got me into better music, but i still can't believe i ever liked it. its basically a rippoff of Strung Out, Rise Against, Pennywise with a little metallica thrown in for metal cred. these are the same fucks who rapped about having a small conscience, yet suddenly they're singing about social concerns. comeplete bullshit.

this isn't better than MCR (or HH in my opinion) the only problem with MCR is that they are all over the place now and i wish they wern't, i hate it and thats the only thing that sucks about them

Better than Hawthorne Heights and My Chemical Romance by a landside... And they still suck.

This is an amazing cd. 88 could possibly be my favorite song of all time, and all you morons who are deciding how many bands you can add together to get Sum 41, just realize that theyre fucking unique. Yes, they've changed a lot since Does This Look Infected, but its a change for the better. More mature and more unique sounding. Good stuff, I can't wait for the tour. June 2nd baby.

    My Score:

"The Bitter End" is the song Metallica should have written instead of the dreadful "St. Anger." How is it that a Canadian pop-punk band has a better grasp on what Metallica used to be than Metallica does? Anyway, half of the tracks on "Chuck" suck and half are really good. "No Reason" is a great opener and "All To Blame" is very Avenged Sevenfold-ish. All in all, "Chuck" is not as good as "....Infected" but its still worth a listen.

I just got home from the Red Sox parade down Boylston street and I decided to stop in and see what was going on with the punknews.org community after the release of the new sum 41 album. I was actually hoping somehow I would get brought up in the review. Someone still loves me! Anyway, I was thinking about submitting a review for this album but just couldnt decide what I thought about it. It was such a surprise, a welcome surprise, but a surprise. Sum 41 is no longer "having fun at other peoples expenses," they are filming documentaries about a civil war in the congo. While I am glad they are starting to grow up I do still miss the obligatory rap song and the jokster attitudes that made this band fun in the first place. But its good music all the same, no complaints from me. By the way, the site looks great, I hadnt seen the new design yet.

Go Sox! Thank god for Aaron Boone or I wouldnt have had my story! Now I feel like Ive earned this one and the many more to follow.

I think they are finding a good mix between metal and pop-punk. Not quite in the zone yet.
I think Track 7 - Open Your Eyes is probably the best one at doing this.

If you expect them to go full-on metal then your a stupid dellusional twat. This album probably has 1 or 2 too many slower tracks - but the last album has 1 or 2 few - so it evens out i suppose

The Rock Against Bush Tour was awesome in just about every way! There is a lot to tell. I should have been keeping a tour diary but was too overwhelmed with meeting people, attending special events and rallies, etc. While I didn’t keep a diary the entire tour was shot on high def video in order to create a documentary about the tour. As I review the footage over the next few days I’ll fill you in on the high lights of the tour. We are not sure in what format the documentary will be released, maybe on its own dvd, maybe with an accompanying cd…? The details, including WHEN it will come out will be unknown for some time.

Rock Against Bush Tour documentary in the works
Posted by adam on Monday, October 18, 2004 @ 15:17:50 EDT

Anti-Flag's Justin Sane recently posted an update on the band's website regarding the conclusion of the Rock Against Bush tour. In it he mentioned a documentary of the tour is in the works. Here's the info:

The Rock Against Bush Tour was awesome in just about every way! There is a lot to tell. I should have been keeping a tour diary but was too overwhelmed with meeting people, attending special events and rallies, etc. While I didn’t keep a diary the entire tour was shot on high def video in order to create a documentary about the tour. As I review the footage over the next few days I’ll fill you in on the high lights of the tour. We are not sure in what format the documentary will be released, maybe on its own dvd, maybe with an accompanying cd…? The details, including WHEN it will come out will be unknown for some time.

these guys don't desearve half the shit they take. then again, they dont' desearve half the hype either. they are quite good at their guitars and even give thrice a run for their money at times. but lyrically its generic (although not about girls at all anymore, or anything cheesey) and vocally its pretty middle of the road (though no more rapping or very annoying high pitched pop punk vocals). sometimes it sounds like they shoiuld step up the pop factor, others it seems like they should go full on metal. they stick between both and don't commit to much to either end of their sound spectrum, making the album pretty safe.

this is an average album. same style as 'does this look infected' minus whatever remaining shreds of pop and hip hip were seen on that outing. its a solid record, but nothing memorable. I do think their best work could be ahead of them, but they're funnest and most entertaining work is probably behind them. i guess this is growing up.

Do my eyes decieve me? I come to this site and I almost soiled myself laughing at this shit. To even place the Weakerthans and Modest Mouse in the same catergory as the white bread mall punk suburbanites that Sum 41 are and are worshipped by is unacceptable. "Left and Leaving" and "The Moon and Antartica" are probably among the finest albums that have came out in the last five years, while this album will rot in the bargin bin within two years. Fuck anyone who says this album is metal, fuck anyone who says this album is punk. Im not an elitist, I just know shit when I see shit. If you follow that "like what you like" and "its just personal taste" bullshit you could say that "Schindler's List" is on the same level as "The Brady Bunch Movie." In any form of art, certain individuals excel and achieve greater mastery than their peers. Sum 41 is completely processed, cheesy, unintelligent and should get the fuck off my tv and computer screen. Go tea bag Avril Lavigne again you mall punk piece of shit.

P.S. Anyone who claims to have liked punk for 11 years and thinks Sum 41 are the modern Bad Religion should go listen to Ashlee Simpson.

My three favorite songs on this cd are songs 2, 7, and 10.

SUM 41 gets a bad rep because they're on a major label and the singer dated Paris Hilton. But let me tell you something this band has major talent. A lot of people say "oh they're just another Blink or Fenix TX".......Uh go listen to the music and determine for yourself.

Hey if you like Sum41 and some heavier stuff with heavy guitar riffs and all I suggest you buy this cd. I just got back at 12:40am tonight from MuchMusic because I was at Live@Much with one of my best friends. She didn't know all the songs but loved it any way. We were about 3 feet from the band but this really tall guy was in front of me and blocked my view part of the time. One thing I really noticed was that Deryk is really small in person. I mean I heard he was only 5 feet but I didn't believe it. It was funny cause that means he's smaller than me and I'm only 5' 3" , he's really hot though. Well the band's all pretty hot. My friend was drooling over Cone cause he was the closest to us. I've probably been listening them for 2 or 3 years. I have no voice left and I'm half asleep so I've gtg. Oh and I heard they're going to announce tour dates in Canada, hopefully Ontario, soon.

I disagree with the review. The slow songs are good. They are maturing, doing slower parts in songs as well. If you think about it, they have no slow songs like these on any albums. Basically Sum 41 stopped trying hard to be punk and metal on this one and wrote a good album. Some soft parts some hard and this is what came out.

and also, "Some Say" is one of the catchiest songs you'll here.

I think the album flows quite nicely and I venture to say that it is there best album to date. I agree with the reviewer though that they should just release a metal album, that would fucking kill. I always thought they were going to release a metal album under their "pain for pleasure" alter egos. Was I the only one who thought that?
