Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Let's start off by saying that the controversy and legend surrounding The Dwarves is one unmatched by any band in music today. The stories of decadence and debauchery have long overshadowed the band's career have even garnered some hatred on themselves for doing and saying what they do.

Building on 2000's Come Clean, Must Die furthers the band's experimentation into other genres of music, and is more successful than I could have ever anticipated. The seamless amalgamation of surf to hardcore to punk to hip hop, and even chant and art rock, is perfectly orchestrated. The fifteen-track effort (fourteen of them new, the other a re-recording of “Dominator”) flows like no other, and with Gary Owen's well-written announcements directing your eardrums towards the directions of the songs he appears in and between. The sequencing on this disc is masterfully done by and takes the listener on a voyage into Blag Dahlia's mind.

Musically, The Dwarves have never sounded better, on tracks like “Dominator” and “Go!” the drums amplify the speed and brevity they are known for. The short guitar solos add atmosphere and are pulled off with precision. The single, “Salt Lake City,” is hands down one of the catchiest songs I've heard all year, and features guest vocals by The Offspring's Dexter Holland, and I would expect this song to be played on the radio. “FEFU” is a hard rock song reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails and even a tamer Marilyn Manson song, whilst “Christ on a Mic” incorporates a church organ and vocal choir verses and then a polka-esque hardcore chorus, and it somehow sounds right. The new frontiers of rock The Dwarves are taking make Must Die one of the most original releases of the year.

Lyrically, Blag Dahlia shines, and shows no signs of slowing down. On “Another Classic” he proclaims: “We are the original ruling class in the land of wax / Undefeated sonic champions to be exact“ showing that he can convey his conceit to the audience better than Jay-Z. The battle rap “Massacre” berates the fact that punk music is now at the forefront of pop culture, and his message to the bands partaking in this is humorous and unmistakeably witty. Don't worry though old fans, traditional Dwarves lines like “I’m coming to fuck the bitch and go” and “Susie smears her lipstick, it tastes like daddy's cum / Johnny's in a backroom getting sucked off by his mom” appear and will satisfy what the band has made their name doing.

The bottom line is The Dwarves Must Die is one of the best releases of the year, and fans of real punk music should pick this up, and if you are one of the haters of the band, give it a spin, you‘ll realize what you've been missing all these years.

Thank you Dwarves, and please do not die, the world needs you.

    My Score:

I think it's the diversity on this album that really makes it great. I liked the QOTSA bashing, but I heard that Josh Homme attacked Blag with a bottle at a gig - fucking ridiculous.

Still, great album, legend band - I especially enjoyed "Blast" and "Runaway #2"

"I much prefer the new school. In fact, I hate the Clash, Black Flag, and all those other lame, poorly produced bands with stupid lyrics and uninspired melodies."

This really is the most blatant example of flamebait, but really, look at this for a second: Have you listened to these bands? Do you know how much shit the Clash got for working in big time studios with producers like the one who did Blue Oyster Cult? Lyric-wise, D4 and Lawerence Arms absolutely worship at the alter of Joe Strummer--this isn't a knock, they'd probably say the same thing. And lets not forget that Dischord has made some pretty awful sounding records, some Minor Threat stuff included.

You sound like you have the attitude of "I don't know much about punk, but I know what I like," which is fine, but lets not go and make blanket statements about the guys that laid the groundwork for your favorite bands to tour the country and created the musical template for everyone else to build off of.

    My Score:

My god man, giving two or three song examples doesn't validate your point. The Lawrence arms write pleasing melodies and hooks. They even have a "sellout record" -- every song on "Apathy and Exhaustion" has a catchy chorus, the recording is glossy, there's lots of compression on it. It's poppy but they're obviously influenced by punk bands. Same thing with LIfetime. Ari Katz and Dan Yemin wrote some of the most memorable hooks and poppy melodies that to this day are still stuck in my head but i would call them melodic post hardcore or something. Midtown, NFG, and Fallout boy can be classified as bad pop-punk or mall punk. Also, bashing on a band because of poor production is retarded and saying the Clash and Black Flag have pointless lyrics yet saying you like MInor Threat because Dischord put it out makes you seem uninformed.

    Score's for the Lawrence Arms.

    My Score:

"Dude, The Lawrence Arms are one of my favorite bands but lets be honest. They are a pop punk band."

Nope. Your statement is deterred by the fact that the Arms have songs like "Hesitation Station" and "Asa Phelps Is Dead." Much too fast and abrasive, and Bren's vocals would be grating to most fans of melodic music. The Larry Arms are a very experimental skatepunk band.

Also: although most people classify Lifetime as pop punk, I'd like them to tell me where they see the "pop" in songs like "Bringing It Backwards" and "Daneurysm." Sure, they have influences, but they aren't pop punk. Skatepunk with pop sensibilities.

As soon as the tempo of any punk song is very quick, it can no longer be classified as pop.

Brandston is a pop punk band. (Old) Midtown is pop punk. The Lawrence Arms....hell no.

    -Chinatown

    "dear chinatown,

do you own any records that weren't released on fat?

    - the other scott"

What kind of a question is that? The bulk of my CD collection is made up of indie/art rock records put out on labels a hundred times smaller than Fat. As far as punk goes, yeah, I do have CDs not released on Fat. By the way, I'd like to remind you that D4 and the Larry Arms happen to have earlier albums put out on other labels (which I have).

I make no claims of being into roots/old school punk rock; I much prefer the new school. In fact, I hate the Clash, Black Flag, and all those other lame, poorly produced bands with stupid lyrics and uninspired melodies. Minor Threat is the exception, but only because a) it's MacKaye's band.
    b) Dischord released it.
