| Bouncing Souls / Against Me! / Let It Burnlive in Columbia2004 live show Review by: Chason See others by this writer Bouncing Souls (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on November 16th 2004
This show was held at the New Brookland Tavern in Columbia, SC. I'd never been there before, but I drove three hours with a hangover for this show and all because it is well fucking worth it. If you are a Bouncing Souls fan, you know what I mean. If you've never seen the band live, you have to understand that this New Jersey quartet puts on one of the most heart-piercing performances you might never expect from punk bands today. Granted, Greg doesn't move much when he sings, which most people wouldn't expect from such a high energy band, there's still a genuine essence that even his slightly immobile characteristic adds to the beauty of their performance.

look, minor threat are classic, fugazi are classic aiight? look, minor threat are classic, fugazi are classic aiight? lmfao @ anybody here who knocks Minor Threat! lmfao @ anybody here who knocks Minor Threat! In my opinon the Bouncing Souls have fallen off as of late. I have seen them at least 7 times being a jersey native, and it seems to me as I look at my cd rack their newer cds are the ones collecting dust. As for their live show...nothing beats seeing them years ago with the Descendents, Ensign, Lifetime, and Sick Of It All. Not all at the same time albeit, but in my opinon those were the glory days of the Bouncing Souls. correction fag. NO ONE should listen to the bouncing souls! i repeat no one. i wasn't there but i can only assume against me was amazing but for the fact they are playing with a worthless band like BS then the show only gets a 9 correction fag. NO ONE should listen to the bouncing souls! i repeat no one. i wasn't there but i can only assume against me was amazing but for the fact they are playing with a worthless band like BS then the show only gets a 9 I recognize Minor Threat as one of the most influential bands in the history of punk rock, but I also recognize that some modern bands have adapted and improved the sound MT went for back in the 80s. Anyhow, Fugazi can't be touched; I think that band in particular will stand as Ian's legacy. " I do like Minor Threat but i don't think they're anything special. I'm 19 by the way" " I do like Minor Threat but i don't think they're anything special. I'm 19 by the way" "..am i getting this right BSD? your logic seems queer to me..." you've got to be no more than 14 or 15 to be making a statement like that which i might add is one of the most ignorant statements i've seen since on this site and that's saying a lot. as minor threat fan boy #31912, i say you can all bash them but to do it based on reasons such as they were an "average" band and how they essentially cashed in on fame at the right time is totally inaccurate. i'm sure ian and the guys were thinking of ways to get onto a major label at the time. by that logic, every single band in existence from the stooges to the ramones to the dead kennedy's was cashing in at the right time. and its the same argument when people bash the ramones, the pistols, and now minor threat. you need to look at them in the context of their times. they were the first doing shit nobody else was doing and is thus far being copied by bands like the bouncing souls (who i like very much). so sure, you don't have to like them and i'm not saying you have to. i'm saying respect them for what they were doing at their time when they were playing in front of 300 kids in a basement somewhere, setting the foundation for"average" DIY punk bands today. "Yeah bands will be covering Bouncing Souls songs in 20 years, hell they've been around for almost 20 years, Thats more than you can say for MT. Yeah i do have their Complete Discograpy cd but its an ok release thats it. I dont see how anyone can or why anyone will bother covering MT songs, they're an average band who came out at the right time" BSD is an attention starved 16 year old. Hopefully he'll be less of a dick in his early 20's. Or at least a little wiser. What are you, his spiritual advisor? BSD, just give it up, you lost this one, badly. "Fugazi has been around for over 15 years and released a lot more than you seem to know about. Perhaps you should have looked them up on Allmusic, too." BSD - Looks as if the Epitaph site doesn't back up your assertations. The Swingin Utters and Mad Caddies are both missing. The only bands i can find in common are the aforementioned NOFX and Descendents, who have released CDs on both labels. Oh, and Rancid. Rancid's first 7" was on FAT I believe. I think you need to explain more, especially with the part about Epi being a major label. Just saying "Oh, you don't even know" kind of belies your lack of knowledge. Please enlighten the rest of us with your knowledge, as if you have proof that Epi or FAT are in anyway associated with or use similar tactics as the Big Five I'd like to know, because from all the bands I've talked to or read interviews with, those two definitely don't. no offense BSD, but you should stop digging a hole. and on a different note, who fucking cares what bands' songs will be covered in the future? for the record, Pulley and the Slackers (two incredible bands i might add) are releasing a split album in which they are BOTH covering Minor Threat songs. how ironic. Yeah, but they all should have broken up ten or so years ago. Bouncing Souls have been around longer than 15 years so has NOFX,Sick of it All, Swingin'Utters,Bad Religon, The Descendents and so on. Fat and Epitaph bands. How sweeeeeeeet! " just like many bands, unless were talking about ones who were only around for, ohhh let's say 3 years and only released three 7 inches and one "album" (since when is an album eight songs?). " ok BSD, you're wrong again. these labels don't promote each others bands, some just appear on both labels like plenty of fat bands appear on any number of labels. bands like the dickies, the subhumans, snuff, screeching weasel, the decendents, less than jake, avail, the lawrence arms, face to face and sick of it all are all bands on the fat roster yet they all have releases on at least two labels OTHER than fat. just like many bands, unless were talking about ones who were only around for, ohhh let's say 3 years and only released three 7 inches and one "album" (since when is an album eight songs?). so, in closing, many fat bands are on many labels and sometimes that label is epitaph. but not that often as only nofx and the descendents have releases on epitaph and fat. and come on fat is run by fat mike, and epitaph was the home of his band for over 15 years, so you should expect that there is not an evil "epitaph vs. fat" feel to either of these labels. a lot of the bands on both labels are very good friends and have spent the last decade and a half touring with eath other. c'mon, BSD, there's nothing wrong with a little love. don't it make ya feel all tingly on the inside. Please excuse the typo below. My point wasn't that NOFX and the Decsendents are Fat bands. I was responding to BSD claiming that "All of them are on there", when in actuality there are two bands that have shared those two labels and are promoted by both. Against Me and the Souls at the same show would be such a fucking party. 2 bands that are great live, even if you don't like them on records. The way I see it, there are two Epitaph bands on the Fat site. "Then why are all of the Fat bands on the Epitaph site?" All of them are on there. Epitaph promoting another labels bands= good for their business? Hmmm... Nokay. "Then why are all of the Fat bands on the Epitaph site?" I love Ian's early lyrics because they're angry without being macho, and I love the guitar riffs because they are dischordantly melodic. Also, Minor Threat had maybe 3 songs about straight edge... Pick up the lyrics booklet some time. Then why are all of the Fat bands on the Epitaph site? Wow BSD, you usually know your shit, but you've been burned on this one G. oh and by the way, fat is OWNED by two people, not ran by two people. haven't ever heard of floyd, the god of fuck??!! and the labels distro has nothing to do with who runs it or how big it is. an outside distributer takes care of getting the albums to stores, not the label. (99% of)ya'll don't know shit about the day to day operations of an indie label, so keep your assumptions to yourself. BSD....you're fucking WRONG again!! fat is a branch off epitaph?? whooo whooo. here comes the clue train....last stop, you. Minor Threat are a simple fun band, thats all. Thye're not great so stop talking like they are. Oh, and Chinatown, I feel the same away about bands like Minor Threat. I honestly just look at it as a different time and spirtit/mentality that we simply were not a part of. My friend used to play me these DIY hardcore records and I never could really get into them. Then I started going to shows, meeting kids, getting more involved in the scene and now I have so much respect for the music and everything it stands for and means. A label doesn't have to be actually distributed by or partly owned by a major label to be a major label in my opinion. There are many "indie" labels that play major label games. I honestly don't know anything about fat or Epitaph but for example, Vagrant used lots of major label tactics long before being partly owned by Interscope. The same goes for Victory records. An indie label, an independent label in the true sense, simply should not and does not operate like that. Fat Wreck is in no way a major. And to suggest that they're a branch of Epitaph....then again, we're talking about BSD here. Fat wreck chords is not a branch off of epitaph. Fat was started by a band member of a band on epitaph. Fat stands on their own with no help from epitaph. Besides who cares what label music comes from. If its good then fuck it. The Clash, The Stooges, The new York Dolls, The Pistols, Iggy pop all on major labels. Stop being so fucking ignorant. When you do you'll discover music that you never new existed PS- If it were operated by two people, I doubt it would have the distro it does. You can buy Fat Wreck stuff in almost literally EVERY major chain. "How is Fat Wreck a major? As it is owner operated, by Fat Mike and Erin, I fail to see how it is in any way a major label. Please explain your post, as you generally seem to have some backing with this stuff. I'm curious." all of your retorts end the same BSD. blah blah go listen to Fat Wreck bands. if you don't think like BSD, then you must not listen to the same music as him, or, you must listen to only Fat Wreck bands. am i getting this right BSD? your logic seems queer to me. The Souls are the shit. BSD- How is Fat Wreck a major? As it is owner operated, by Fat Mike and Erin, I fail to see how it is in any way a major label. Please explain your post, as you generally seem to have some backing with this stuff. I'm curious. last week brian baker was interviewed in my local paper: "straight edge was(is) no fucking movement. pull your head out of your ass. just a bunch of kids who are too young to drink and haven't lived real life yet. give 'em all a coupla years, and all those x's aren't worth the ink they're tattooed with. how am i not surpised that someone as dumb as you would buy into that crap, BSD? i miss the bouncing souls. i havent seen them in who knows how long and i live in freaking philadelphia. who knows why they dont play philly more often since they are so close to it, but that is for another time. I think it's just as likely that people will be covering Bouncing Souls as they will be covering Against Me! Regardless, if you're listening to music because it's going to be relevant later on, then you might be listening for the wrong reasons. He should be growing out of his hardcore phase in the comming months. You will then like good music, hopefully straight edge was(is) no fucking movement. pull your head out of your ass. just a bunch of kids who are too young to drink and haven't lived real life yet. give 'em all a coupla years, and all those x's aren't worth the ink they're tattooed with. how am i not surpised that someone as dumb as you would buy into that crap, BSD? "Are people going to be covering Leftover Crack in 20 years? Will anyone remember Leftover Crack in 2 years? The answer is no" " I dont see how anyone can or why anyone will bother covering MT songs, they're an average band who came out at the right time." Are people going to be covering Leftover Crack in 20 years? Will anyone remember Leftover Crack in 2 years? The answer is no Yeah bands will be covering Bouncing Souls songs in 20 years, hell they've been around for almost 20 years, Thats more than you can say for MT. Yeah i do have their Complete Discograpy cd but its an ok release thats it. I dont see how anyone can or why anyone will bother covering MT songs, they're an average band who came out at the right time. Are people going to be covering Bouncing Souls in 20 years? Okay, in twenty years, though, bands won't be covering Against Me! songs. Against Me! is not part of a movement. They're an anarchist folk band who moved to a major, basically. So they aren't really anarchists anymore. It comes down to who's the better band, that my youngdumbass friend goes to Against Me! It comes down to this... Axl Rose needs to be shot, not reinvented. No one should listen to Against Me!... " "hopeless romantic" was their fourth full length and probably their worst record" SICKBOI - just saw bouncing souls and against me with special guest set by none other than Murphys Law. What a fucking show. We got real lucky here in ft lauderhell, fl. Murphys Law was amazing as usual and you really can't do much better than The Souls. They even said they recorded the show for a live album. "give me a reason to live, I'll sing along forever" I'm going to see these guys in Boston this weekend. I cant wait! Ive been a fan of Against Me since their latest CD came out, and who can argue with the Bouncing Souls?! Punks in Vegas, Night Train, Kid, Freaks... Though during her life Zora Neale Hurston claimed her birth date as January 7, 1901 and her birth place as Eatonville, Florida, she was actually born on that date in the year 1891 in Notasulga, Alabama. Within the first year or two of her life her family moved to all-black Eatonville, however, and this community shaped her life and her writing to a significant degree. John Hurston, the author's father, was a carpenter and a preacher and was several times elected mayor of their town. Her mother, Lucy, died in 1904. The young Zora didn't take very well to her new stepmother and left home to work for a traveling theatre company, then in 1917 attended Morgan Academy in Baltimore to finish high school. Hurston entered Howard University in 1920 and studied there off and on for the next four years while working as a manicurist to support herself. Her first published story appeared in Howard University's literary magazine in 1921 and she received recognition in 1925 when another story was accepted by the New York magazine Opportunity, edited by Charles S. Johnson. After she won second place in the Opportunity contest, Johnson and others, including Alain Locke, encouraged Hurston to move to New York. if you aren't a fan of against me, you're not my friend As far as BSD goes, he bashes alot of bands that I like, but if you look at what he listens to, it's actually decent shit! I don't have a big problem with him talking shit 'cause it's not like he says "fuck against me! go listen to desaparecidos..." or some shit like that, he actually likes real music. ive been a bouncing souls fan my whole life. they are my favorite band in the world and have seen them about 12 - 15 times. the greatest thing about this band is they continue to get bettter on cd and in their live set. im going saturday to jersey and if they play this set it will be the best set ive ever seen them play and thats including the infamous stone pony halloween show... TRUE BELIEVERS ALL THE WAY No one should listen to Against Me!... hehehe....did anyone show up with the stink bombs like when Against Me played in NY? Pretty much the same set we got minus manthem and they also played "punks in vegas". Great show. to tell you the truth, i'm not even sure if they played "cliche..." at the SC show. i just think that's what they opened with. i don't know their material very well. Post below is me... BOLDREDLETTERS- Well I do, and have since summer 2002. theyre still my favorite band. No one should listen to Against Me!... maybe greg doesn't move around much anymore but i've seen him hang upside down from a pipe in the ceiling at the middle east while singing and have seen him go pretty nuts at coney and wetlands before they shut down too. i'll be at the cat's cradle show too. it will be great. yeah, greg moves, but he doesn't go ape shit or anything...it's cool. I am going to this show at Cat's Cradle on Friday and then seeing just Against Me! next week. It will not only be two great shows, but I will be there with an ice cold one in hand! maybe greg doesn't move around much anymore but i've seen him hang upside down from a pipe in the ceiling at the middle east while singing and have seen him go pretty nuts at coney and wetlands before they shut down too. score is for the loved ones score is for let it burn Hopeless Romantic, Gone, True Believers if greg didn't move around that much, then it wasn't a great bouncing souls show you only knew one against me song?
