Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Green Day has been one of my favorite bands for years, yet somehow I'd never managed to see them live. When I heard they were returning to Salt Lake City, I knew I had to go. Normally I can't stand big arena concerts, but Green Day is one of the few bands I'll make an exception for.

When we got to the show, the sponsor (some cell phone company) was taking pictures of everyone in line to put up on the big screens inside. I tried my best to look hardcore but I ended up just looking retarded. Oh well. Inside they had a number up on the screens that you could send a text message to, and they would put your message up on the screen. It was a cool idea, but most people just used it to say "so and so's so hott...." so it wasn't all that interesting.

It wasn't long before Sugarcult took the stage. They've never really been one of my favorites so I wasn't too excited. They opened with "Stuck In America," which is one of their songs I actually like, but before long they started playing all of their newer whiny emo stuff, with titles like "Cry" and "She's The Blade." They didn't really have much personality onstage and were pretty forgettable.

Later on, New Found Glory came on, opening with a clip of Elle from "Kill Bill" whistling. That was pretty awesome, since I love those movies. NFG has always been confusing to me, because even though I don't like most of their stuff on record, they still pull off a pretty entertaining show. They played for about half an hour, focusing mostly on stuff from Catalyst, then thankfully left before they could wear out their welcome.

Before Green Day took the stage, a guy dressed in a bunny suit came out and started doing the YMCA. He was obviously very drunk. I get the feeling somebody lost a bet. Anyway, the lights went down, the crowd went nuts and Billie Joe and the guys took the stage, jumping right into "American Idiot." From there they played a bunch of songs from American Idiot in almost sequential order, which got a huge response from the crowd, especially before "Holiday" when Billie Joe screamed "This song is not anti-American. It's anti-war!"

As always, they brought up three guys from the audience to form their own band. Billie Joe kissed the guitar player on the lips, and later he gave him his guitar. Billie Joe also stuck his hand down his own pants and started moaning at one point. I'd really like to know what the mormons in the audience thought of that. Later they even played a cover of "Shout" (the old rock'n'roll song they used in "Animal House").

They finally slowed it down by dedicating "Wake Me Up When September Ends" to Johnny Ramone. After playing "Minority" they left, and less than two minutes later they were back. They finished off the night with "When I Come Around," and an awesome cover of "We Are The Champions." An amazing concert by an amazing band.

SETLIST:

Jesus Of Suburbia

because nirvana, while yes in their early days were quite punk-ish, are overblown. they recieve extra attention because their singer died (be it by his own hand or someone elses, im not opening THAT box. i dont know and neither do you) but the truth is they were just one of many post-punk/grunge/pre-alternative/whatever bands that were around at the time. and i can think of several that were ALOT better than nirvana

Secondly, I can't believe you mentioned Incubus and Linkin Park in the same sentence... *shudder*... Linkin Park is whiney garbage. Have you heard Incubus's CD "SCIENCE"? That CD is a far cry from "Phish covers". The turntables in Incubus allow them to create music unlike most bands out there... try checking out the song "Battlestar Scratchlactica" as an example.

Green Day are turning into Offspring in terms of their live shows with the predictable 4 hit songs off Dookie, King for a Day, Brainstew, and a bunch of songs off the current album, letting kids play a song, drawing out songs to 5 minutes during which time they could've actually squeezed in some more songs. I was at the Nov. 17 show in Vancouver. It was a really good show with a setlist identical to the one above, with one exception: Billie Joe closed the show playing Good Riddance.

It wasn't as fun as it would've been because I separated my shoulder the week before, so I had to stand on the side rather then getting in there and mucking it up with my buddies.

One thing I didn't like was the way they drew out a lot of the songs to make them longer, like Minority and King For A Day.

Also, I was under the impression that they were going to play American Idiot from start to finish, but they left many songs out of the set (Give Me Novacaine, She's a Rebel, Extraordinary Girl, Letterbomb, Homecoming, Whatsername). I was really looking forward to seeing those live.

Another element lacking from the show was the inclusion of pre-Dookie material on the set list. I expected to at least hear 2,000 Lights Years Away or Going to Pasalacqua... but alas, nothing. That was a major disappointment.

They are still doing that Knowledge routine... cool, but more of a time waster than anything. Not even their own song.

All in all, they weren't as good as when I saw them in '01. This time it was a bigger venue, less intimate, lots of old people (?), lots of young people (?), shorter set list, more bullshit... but still an 8 out of 10. When they can play a shitty show and still get a mark like that, you know they're a damn good live band.

sounds like the EXACT SAME show i was at in montreal. pink bunny suit, YMCA, billie joe "wacking off"...

only difference is that in montreal they didnt play when i come around and they finished with billie joe all by himself out on the runway playing time of your life. that was memorable.

i found though that the sound for sugarcult was shit, maybe it was just their style though but i couldnt really make out or distinguish any actual notes and very few of the lyrics, the sound was a bit better for nfg but seeing as how i dont like them either... well what can i say.

green day was perfect though. the score would be a 10 if it wasnt for the opening 1 1/2 hours of shit.

I would want Greenday to just play Dookie from start to finish. I dont think theyve done much else that i would want to hear.

Id spend $40-50 to see Green Day play Dookie and the Offspring play Smash. It would remind me of better days and be well worth the money. This however is worth about $7.50.

man, they've been doing the same onstage routines for like 8 years. when will the masturbation/moaning bit come to an end... especially since it wasn't entertaining in the first place.

Green Day should have played 'The Grouch,' that song rules.

same exact set list only we didnt get when i come around. instead we got homecoming and good riddance, which was the closer....a much better closer than a cover in my opinion

    My Score:

Green Day should not close with a cover. That's a fine song and all, but they should really be doing an original as their closer, especially since they have so many well-known/popular songs. I think that When I Come Around should be the absolute last song they play.
