"Hey guys, did you hear the new Saves The Day CD?" "Yeah, it blows...what a bunch of stupid cry babies." That has been a common reaction to the new album throughout the punk scene... Recorded in early 2001, the new STD album, Stay What You Are, takes the band to a completely new level. If you're looking for a Can't Slow Down or Through Being Cool rehash, just quit reading this review right now. The 11 song disc begins with "At Your Funeral", an amazingly catchy, but amazingly dark song. The whole album is far darker than any previous effort by the band.Followed by "At Your Funeral" are, "See You", "Cars & Calories", "Certain Tragedy", and "Jukebox Breakdown." The album is so varied, it's hard to categorize it. But, labels are useless, right? As those first 5 songs pass by, you notice the change in the band. You notice the darkness, the distorted guitars. You notice a brand new band. "Freakish" follows after "Jukebox Breakdown", and it's just an amazing song. Words are hard to describe it. "I'll make my way across the frozen sea, beyond the blank horizon, wehre I can forget you and me, and geta decent night's sleep." If that's not sincere I don't know what is. "As Your Ghost Takes Flight" is next up. It's a song for the whole family. No, not really. It's a creatively violent song, which scared the poo out of me the first time I heard it, but it fits in nicely with the theme of the album. Sometimes you just have to let go, as things change... After that, "Nightingale" follows. By far the best song on the disc. The song is written like a dark story that you don't want to end, as is the entire album. There's just something special about "Nightingale" that will have you hitting replay over and over again. "All I'm Losing Is Me" continues the dark theme, and then the slow love song pops up, "This Is Not An Exit." It's a really well written song for the brokenhearted. "Firefly" ends the album, and it does it in good fashion too. Good song. Yes, this is the most diverse work that STD has ever done. No, you will not enjoy this album if all you want is fast paced punk. Yes, you have to have a deep mind to understand the genius in this album. Chris Conley has received critical praise across the board for his amazing lyrics, and vocals. That credit is much deserved, I might add. The guy is a genius. Dave Soloway and Ted Alexander have vastly improved on guitar, and it shows on this one. Eben D'Amico's roaring bass is amazing. Bryan Newman's drumming fits beautifully. My rate's a 9 out of 10, but I really think it's a 9 & a half. Do yourself a favor. Pick this one up on a rainy day. WHY???? the best album i have heard in a long time! dammit i hate these fucking reviews they always make me want to buy cd's. and so now i have no money. but i now have an excellent cd collection. Hey you guys were right. I listened to it a few times and i like it much better than the first time now this is actually good considering their old punk crap. the lyrics are moving and the vocal work is fantastic. a must-have for any fan of good poprock /me I love it. I hated TBC but I love this one. And I like those cardboard cases a lot more than the typical plastic ones. I know these guys and they kick as much ass as there music, i listen to it constantly aswell.GhettoSmurf I guess I'm not that hip because I can't get into these dudes. I kinda dug "TBC" but I didn't think it was anything special. I listened to this album at a local music store and opted to go with the new Good Riddance album. I suggest you do the same. i love this fucking cd. if youve only listened to it once at staywhatyouare.com or something go listen to it again. trust me you'll realize that it IS amazing. im not even a fan of this style of music but i still listen to this disc constantly. Love the lyrics, but just don't dig the sound all that much. Theres a few that I like Jukebox breakdown, but theres a few that I don't really care for. MAybe if I listen to it a bit more it will grow on me. I only listened to it once. i've talked alot of shit about this band, and i never found their older cd's that great, but i will say that this album is one of the best cd's i've heard in a long, long time. I know I know, I cant believe I'm saying it either. Stay What Your Are is full of catchy choruses, clever metaphors, and all around great music. It sure as hell isn't punk, but it's some of the best pop-rock I've ever heard. Props to them for changing for the better.before you judge it on other's opinions(like I did), give it a listen.- fathead ok, the one before the previous one....you know what nm another comment (i did the previous one) First off, you are an idiot for saying chris really wants to be in Lifetime. You're still carrying a torch from the Can't Slow Down era. IF you want to curse a band for sounding like Lifetime, try the movielife. does anyone else hate those new cardboard cases every new cd is coming in?... What the hell? In no way is this album far more dark than their previous stuff. It's far more "lighter". I am a huge fan of STD, and going into listening to the CD, I didn't have high expectations. I had heard bad things already. Well, it's far more poppier than their other stuff, and very catchy. This isn't Saves The Day. Just like the new Hot Water Music, it's different, but good. If i went into listening to this CD without hearing of STD before, I would think that it is good. But, I just have that prior knowledge of what STD used to be and how rockin' they were. So, this CD is great, just not STD. By no means, darker and less poppier though. When I first put the CD in my CD player, I had very high expectations. I loved Can't Slow Down and thought Through Being Cool was one of the best CD's I'd heard in years. The two songs on the Vagrant sampler had my truly pumped to hear this new stuff and I was expecting a masterpiece. Yes, i was hoping for another Through Being Cool album and when i first heard Stay What You Are i wanted to punch my computer... but more i listend to it the more i realized that it was still saves the day who still knew how to rock it up. Give the album a chance, and im sure you will love it This album's amazing. Fuck you if you don't like it because it's not Can't Slow Down. It's okay if you don't like it because it's not your taste. Fuck you if you're too punk rock to admit liking it. It's okay if you really don't like it. I haven't heard the cd, but everybody but the 2 reviews on this site say it sucks. I think I'll get it just for Chris' lyrics. Chris just really wants to be in lifetime. Nothing too genius there.After hearing the album I was hit with an enormous rush of... Indifference. |
