Rancid starts out this document of the 1997 punk/ska scene with possibly their best song ever "The Brothels," giving me my first palatable taste of their classic sound. Until this point, I had been fairly stand-offish towards the East Bay quartet, prefering the sounds of the east coast. However, from the word go, I was taken with not only Rancid, but with all of the bands on this disc. Sure, some of them I was already familiar with (The Slackers, The Pietasters, The Skatalites, Skinnerbox) and some would disappear (The Silencers), but this CD stands as the obvious base of my music collection and taste to this day. With a mix of east and west coast ska and punk, Tim started off the Hellcat history with a gem. Its mix of sounds is complimented by an amazing sequencing of tracks, segueing street punk into throwback ska into oi! and so on.

To be honest, it's quite difficult to explain why it is that this CD is just so damned good. Maybe kids today wouldn't be down with it, but looking back, I can't see how anyone who heard it then couldn't have been. While the ska-punk, street-punk sound may have disappeared from the scene's consciousness in the years following, this CD will always serve to document a time when the Dropkick Murphys weren't a gimmick, Rancid was relevant, Django was the boss DJ, and kids everywhere wanted a porkpie hat more than a broken heart tattoo.

I know that 40 Oz song ruined it, but then again The Mercy Killer track right after made up for it.

i thought it was "the praying hands of jesus had given him a rest"? oh well i could be wrong. either way, anyone who thinks the brothels is the best rancid song, obviously has never heard 95% of their other songs.
this comp does kick ass. ive had it for years and is still in regular rotation on my cd player. but i noticed a funny thing about the getb series. if you took pieces of each one and put all them together, youd have one really great one. like volume 1...Its definetly got the best ska songs of the series. however, volume 2 had the best reggae. volume 3 has the best punk songs. and thats where my theory ends, cuz volume 4 is the best one overall. except that stuid '40 oz' south central sperm squad crap. what the hell is that shit anyway?

Here's the lyrics according to some lyric site. That 4th line still bugs me...

"And when I first did him I knew that he was tough,
And not to my surprise he really liked it rough,
Red leather pants, a tattooed neck
and prayin' hard to jesus saying givin' him a rest"

I'm still sporting my porkpie, and I always will.

Since reading this review I've had "The Brothels" stuck in my head so I've been rockin this cd all weekend. There's a couple of clunkers, but overall it's really really good.

"Red leather pants, tattooed neck, Praying Hands of Jesus, [sounds like] says giving him a rest" That last line is a tough one, anyone able to decipher it?

We need a 3 paragraph minimum on reviews or something.

    This is getting ridiculous.

No one has to be nostalgic. It just promotes self-importance and ageism... "Wow, you were only 12 in '97? I was 20... and rockin' it to some popular punk bands!"

Hell yeah me niggaz I wuz rockin to Minor Threat, they're me boys. My grandmatherz says "Thats good music, nice safe music" so i says Hells yeahz!

Man, a lot of kids are limited by their exposure. Not so much these days with the internet, but back before the whole fucking country was on DSL, it was hard to find good DIY bands if you were from a small town that didn't get MRR or if you didn't know any older punks.

Nowadays, its really easy to find new bands on the internet even if you live in bumfuck, west virginia or wherever. For this reason, a lot of older punks come down pretty hard on the young kids who have exposure to really rad bands, but still buy the latest vandals cumdumpster.

It is of course, a matter of taste.

i'm confused, why would you post a second review of a compilation album that was released 7 years ago?

being nostalgic for something after just a few years wow...I´d say the whole street punk and ska thing is alive and kicking, though metalcore is on its zenith and emo is way over it, everythings still fine

HAHAHAHAHA. You 15 year old little bugger. Boy you kill me every single time. Self importance and ........uh mother fucking ageism. But you do bring up an interesting point that there are arrogant pricks who try to belittle the tastes of younger people and it ends up just being a mini ego trip. But I'd like to think I'm not in that category when I go on my 1992 nostalgia trip of hearing nirvana for the first time but maybe i'm fooling myself and am subconsiously subjecting myself to future discriminatory forethoughts? What do you think oh wise grand master?

    Anonymous (December 4, 2004)

Maybe instead of trying to make something legendary of a really BLAND period in music that isn't even OVER yet, create something new.

when else should we be nostalgic for? the late 70s, when we weren't alive?

    Anonymous (December 4, 2004)

I like how you get all nostalgic about the late 90's...

It was the fucking 90's.. Who gives a fuck about'em?

    Fuzzy (December 3, 2004)

I didn't say it was the first time I'd heard rancid. I said it was the first time I found their sound palatable.

    niveK82 (December 3, 2004)

I have this comp, and a bunch of other comps. I buy them becsue they are cheap, listen to them once, then they end up in my drawer of comps and shitty cd demos that are handed to me while leaving a concert.

I still spin this for the hepcat/silencers/F minus tracks. The second installment of this comp remains one of my favorites. It flows like no other.

"This is a rockin' comp, and the homoerotic lyrics of "The Brothels" makes that tune even more delicious!"

What's so homoerotic about the lyrics "When I first did him, I knew that he was tough, and not to my suprise he really liked it rough! Red leather pants, a tattooed neck..." It's a beautiful song about two plutonic friends, who, on occasion, engage in rough homosexual sex while one may or may not be wearing tight leather. I don't see any homoerotic undertones there. Geez, you probably think that purple Teletubby is gay too.

Am I reading that right? You'd never heard Rancid before this comp came out? How is this possible exactly?

Also there's no way The Brothels is their best song ever.
