It seems these days that the boundary between metal and hardcore is becoming more and more blurry. There are still hardcore bands, like Sick of It All, and there are still metal bands, like Metallica. Both styles are unique in their own ways. Hardcore has louder vocals and usually a main singer with little back up. Metal is generally characterized by much more intricate music, with loud guitar riffs and strong vocals. However, it seems like recently a new genre of music has been created and growing in support and interest. This new genre has been called simply metalcore and, as you probably have guessed, is a blend between the two music styles. A couple of the best metalcore bands I can think of are Atreyu and Every Time I Die. Both bands show strong influences from both genres, and use them to create their own brand of music.
“Forever your eyes will hold the memory I saw your heart as it overtook me We tried so hard to understand and reason But in that one moment I gave my heart away That perfect breath where my mind lay beside me And all I knew was what had overtaken me With no explanation I am comforted by inability to understand When I wake from this dream will you still be here Will your smile still open my heart And leave me transparent?”What makes this song so unique from the rest is that it actually incorporates singing, although in a backup role. For the majority of the song the music is really hard, with ripping guitar riffs and piercing screaming. However at the end of the chorus the line “I gave my heart away” is sung in a very soft, very melodic kind of way. The person who sings this sounds very similar to Francis Mark of From Autumn to Ashes. His voice creates a contrast between the singing and the screaming, and makes for one hell of a song. “Forever” also has a breakdown, common in metal music. All of a sudden the screaming and the guitar stops, and everything slows down. When it speeds back up we are greeted with screaming once again. The lead singer (screamer) has a very harsh sounding voice, which makes everything sound that much better. For the remainder of the CD, the songs sound very similar to the first three, which is quite common in the metalcore genre. Although the music can get kind of repetitive, this is still a wicked cd that I strongly recommend checking out. One other standout song is called “Distance is Darkness” and, like “Forever,” features some singing to go along with the screaming. Please note that there is very limited singing on this CD, so if you don’t like screaming don’t bother listening to it. Please login or register to post comments. As i lay dying... just .. an extremely excellent band .. one of my personal favorites .. the music is just intense .. flippin amazing album, my one of my favorite metal cds of all time It's not a Stephen King book; it's William Faulkner's most popular and acclaimed book. The fact that you think it's a stephen king book is a reflection on the growing ignorance of America. Pretty good band, though. This album has a couple good songs that are ruined by how cliche and repetitve this disk tends to be. This is the metalcore with an emo-vibe that suckes. This band is so overrated. (Listen to real metalcore) Yo you pussy women we know its not metal, metal sucks this is hardcore and its way better than metal we dont have to throw useless cuss words and worship satan to have awesome music i was very surprised to find out these guys are christian. really good to know there are christian guys out there besides me who like death metal and metalcore. my band, God's Wrath, will be joining the christian metal genre soon... i hope... continue to rock on As I Lay Dying and COB followers I don't have the album yet, having trouble finding it where I live, but of the songs I've heard, I give this band an 11 out of 10. One of the best bands I've ever heard, I say only Children of Bodom is better. Rock On As I Lay Dying. who ever heard the band SUBHUMANZ? who ever posted this comment "As i Lay Dying is the most sickest band there is out there. I loved Frail words Collapse" is kewl who ever doesnt like this band have must of not even heard it b4 bc this band is amazing. if u do not like this band u must like try to act kewl by saying oh yeh this band sucks.... YEH RITE who ever fuckin does not like this band is an ass hole there is no better band then this so fuck u all who dont like this band this is the best metalcore album i've ever heard and they're a christian band also As i Lay Dying is the most sickest band there is out there. I loved Frail words Collapse. Why do they post reviews for cds that came out over a year ago? How about review it when it comes out. I don't find this album to be anything special For everyone saying this isn't real metal: I know a bunch of anal metal guys that all like this band and think it's metal enough. WTF are you talking about? this cd sucks, the lyrics suck, and the kid beneath this comment sucks for listening to atreyu. Atreyu are a much better band than you people say...I don't give a shit what you people think...The Curse is good...so are their other releases Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. Where is this band from, exactly? "I would rather drown in the odor of honey-suckle than listen to this shit." regardless of what you may think about the genre and how its just a fad or whatever.. in every fad thing there tend to be a few stand outs.. this cd is one of them. i listen to a good amount of this metal core stuff and alot of it sounds the same.. but this cd is simply amazing.. if you like this band.. listen to haste the day. This release is OK, with a few true standards, but it doesn't do their live show justice at all. I saw them open for Killswitch Engage, and In Flames, and tossed into that kind of fire, they took total control of a skeptical crowd. metalcore sucks, the bands are only in it for the bucks, and if you don't believe me you're a schumck............(i've used that one before, but it's appropriate here) http://www.purevolume.com/thereddeath did somebody actually mention threadbare? this album seriously sucks! it sounds like a bunch of 13 year olds trying to play metal but havent quite got the chops to pull off something decent. the drums sound like hundred pound rocks tearing through paper.. Steel dildos, yo. This isn't a bad record it just gets boring after a few listens. Good live show though... wow this cd was finally reviewed , I was surprised it hadn't been yet. one of the most overrated albums in a long time. every song is the same. "96 hours" is hot though. "Yeah right. If you think sick of it all is the definition of hardcore, I URGE you to grab anything by Capitalist Casualties and have your mind blown." There's no scene that people can count on producing consistent bands that they like... Eh this whole fashioncore scene is shit. Not defined by the music entirely but mostly by the overwhelming amount of brainwashed hipster... or "scene" kids, regardless... Im a fan of the old ways; keep the hardcore hardcore, and the metal metal. etc. If its good, like it. but fuck the scenes. the new mastodon is goooood. HOW CAN YOU GIVE THIS CD A 9 Shit, I just ordered the new Mastodon record. " Also, will you people stop suggesting bands like Converge and Botch to metalcore bands? I personally love both of those bands, but they sound SO different from metalcore, which is very based on melodic metal riffs and chunky breakdowns." the only thing better than this album is everything. I would rather drown in the odor of honey-suckle than listen to this shit. They're metal but I can feel the hint of screamo in it and for once I really like some of this album. This is a really great record. I agree with what someone else said about the amazing production Oh yeah, metalcorekids: Yeah, Atreyu's a real quality band. "Both styles are unique in their own ways. Hardcore has louder vocals and usually a main singer with little back up. Metal is generally characterized by much more intricate music, with loud guitar riffs and strong vocals." they have some catchy moments on here, but all the "metal" on this cd just sounds like rehashed At The Gates riffs. The best things about this cd are the production, which is absolutely amazing, and the guys themselves. really nice sons of bitches...even if they are into that whole xtian thing. Eh, I'd take Converge over this. Crazy..who would have thought to have a skull on their album cover That's not really helping. Atreyu's first cd is just as horrid as the Curse. Atreyu is just bad. in my defense i wrote this review in like may.... before atreyu relased the curse (the worst record ever) "Naming yourself after Faulkner means you have to live up to a lot." suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks A lot of hardcore bands are afraid to call themselves metal. Yeah, I said it. Naming yourself after Faulkner means you have to live up to a lot. fuck, edit: thanks for the insight on your favorite band, chief! Uh isn't this a Stephen King book LOLz?! "Has anyone heard the new Earth Crisis band... Freya, I think?" metALWOOOOOOMEtALLLL!@!!!!#r4REHBH This score if for the fucking simple plan banner I was greeted with when I first entered this site. Has anyone heard the new Earth Crisis band... Freya, I think? This band is ok, but that's all. p.s. and if you think atreyu is a good band, your review is not going to carry weight with most people. quit jumping trends. metalcore that kids should be listening to INSTEAD of this: The first few songs of this are pretty sweet, but after track six, this thing gets incredibly boring. Score is for the user name. And metalcore no matter how you slice it is just bad music. Except for maybe the occasional band like Darkest Hour. Shittiest metalcore band ever...if I could give a 0 I would. the first record and the split with american tragedy are better. still this one is a decent record Haha, this kid totally went to Ozzfest this summer Ha. This review totally reads like a Metalcore For Dummies excerpt. |
