This is not an easy record to take in. Sure, it may sound like a very mellow, emotive indie record, but there's so much more beneath the surface of this album that makes it one of the more troubling CDs I've purchased. Beneath all the smooth, flowing tempos, or at times, the driving chords, there lays a story drenched in self-doubt and personal struggle for singer Ryan Shelkett. The smooth instrumentation of the opening track, "A Great Depression," can only try to cover the story told by the album's dark lyrics.

Good review. I think I'll check this shit out. The link doesn't work though, it's www.deepelm.com until now that is. because it hasn't been reviewed yet. i agree with the person that said this was deep elm's best band. they were fucking phenomenal live. sucks they broke up. this band should tour with "hope to die" Appleseed Cast VS. Cross My Heart, who's better? I'm pretty sure that the drummer from Cross My Heart & Liars Academy bartended at Phillips in Baltimore when I served there. Yeah, Ryan Skelkett was in Blank, & the first Cross My Heart ep (Dim Mak Records?) sounds more like the last 2 Blank releases...also the first Liars Academy release, the lp, sounds as such...good stuff. Wasn't their singer in Blank? I used to love Blank years ago but I can't stand this style now, granted I've only heard very little Cross My Heart. this band saddened me much like any of the singer's other bands. i love liars academy but this stuff is too boring. kinda like john reis, i love rocket hate hot snakes and any other band he has done. oh well I was really disappointed when I bought this after hearing the self-titled CD. Most of it made me bored. I think I may have been missing something, though, based on your review. I guess I'll give it one more try. There's nothing more uplifting in a Midwest winter than some emo boy singing about wanting to kill himself. this band is, hands down, deep elm's absolute best. the reason i failed algebra is better but this is still almost flawless. This album is one of Deep Elm's best. |
