Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Operation Ivy were pioneers in fusing ska and punk on the west coast, but on the east coast, it was Boston’s plaid clad Mighty Mighty Bosstones who were the kings, starting it off in 1985. It would be a full decade later when the mainstream would embrace them and shitty bandwagon third wave ska bands would quickly rise and fall. But Devil’s Night Out marks the cornerstone of the genre the band aptly titles skacore. Taking 2 tone-era ska and injecting into it healthy doses of punk, hardcore, metal, and rock, this was a band set out to have a great time, throwing all their influences into a messy stew and seeing what they could come up with. The energetic horn blasts from Johnny Vegas, the deft ska/punk licks laid down by guitar virtuoso Nate Albert, and the unmistakable vocal noise of Dicky Barrett are all on raw display here.

Right out of the gates, you have the classic “Devil’s Night Out,” with a searing guitar opening leading into Dicky growling about devils drinking and dancing up storms. You start slamming in the pit to this thrasher until the Bosstones hit the chorus and introduce you to ridiculously catchy ska, and now you’re just dancing around like a drunken fool. You are now officially hooked.

The energy, passion, and humor these guys show doesn’t let up until the last song is over. The frenetic pace of their live staple “Hope I Never Lose My Wallet” and “Haji” will get you moving. They give you a welcome change of pace from the more explosive skacore tracks with the excellent “Howwhywuz, Howwhyam“ a song with Dicky reflecting on his past. “The Cave” is a loungy ska tune that conjures up images of a Mardi Gras party. They have an ode to the bartender and alcohol (a recurring theme throughout the album) in the uh, “The Bartender’s Song.” You start getting the idea that they ain’t a one trick pony. In fact, they are pretty good songwriters and musicians who complement each other very well, evident both on the studio tracks and in their chaotic live shows. The horn section is top notch, and Dicky is a fantastic storyteller and one of the more underrated lyricists in punk rock in my opinion. They would only continue to get better.

My favorite track though is "Patricia," a song I’ve never heard them play in the dozen or so times I’ve had the pleasure in seeing them. It's a driving, straight up punk track that has Dicky telling a sad story about the trials and tribulations of a girl named Patricia and how she is able to overcome them and in turn inspire Dicky. They finish it all off with the mini jam session “A Little Bit Ugly,” with help from Jimmy G of Murphy’s Law that starts off with a harmonica intro before charging into a hyper speed ska punk tune.

Later records would accentuate different aspects of their music such as the more ska-influenced More Noise And Other Disturbances, the rock-influenced Don’t Know How To Party and the more hardcore-influenced Question The Answers. Not to say that they peaked here, but I find it one of their more enjoyable records out of their vast back catalog. So that's how it goes with the hardest working band around playing in all their drunken glory with smiles on their faces, watching the ska kids and punk kids going crazy. Beautiful.

another random trivia - The timing of the radio broadcast at the top of bartenders song was just stumbled upon in mixing. It fits so well

and yes, it doesn't get better than the dicky and jimmy g duet

    classic ska/punk album...

i remember seeing the video for someday i suppose on alternative nation and realizing that nin and pearl jam were fucking lame. (i know it's a different album but nontheless that's when i got into them)

seen them about 15 times before the whole pay attention thing. they were always great and always real cool to all the kids before and after the show.

If they got back together this year, I would buy plane tickets and sleep in the street in whatever city they're in to go see them. I followed them around on the Flogging Molly/Tossers tour (I think their last one?) my senior year of college. We were originally going to just do the Ohio dates, but Lawrence saw us there two nights in a row, and invited us to the Chicago date, on the guest list. It was like a wet dream come true for me. Sigh.

"If that was 10-11 songs instead of 16 it would've been so much better. "

i totally agree. while 'a jackknife', 'lets face it' and 'question the answers' were all better records, and just overall, all amazing records, 'pay attention' still had some really great songs, amidst some shitty ones. 'she just happened', 'so sad to say' 'skeleton song' are all classic, and theres a handful of others i forget that ruled.

It would be great if they came back, but only if Nate Albert and Dennis Brockenborough came along for the ride. Hands down one of the best live bands ever. Ah, those were the good old days.

God, I miss this band. My wife and I recently adopted a 14 year old girl and she believes music begins and ends with Good Charlotte. I have two goals: Keep her off the pole and make her realize how cool MMB are. I could listen to them for ever. Great album."

you should stop having sex with her, that should get her off your pole.

Obviously this is a record any fan of ska/punk or skacore needs to have. "The Bartender's Song" might be my favorite Bosstones song.

Am I the only one that thinks Joe Gittleman totally shreds Matt Freeman? I wonder how many hours I've spent trying to figure out some of the "bass fiddle-men"s stuff.

Great album... Jimmy Gestapo on "A Little Bit Ugly" is fucking amazing.

Really, the only low point is "Haji." When I first had this, it was on cassette, and starting the second side was always mildly painful.

Everytime I listen to this band I get more sad realizing it's over. I didn't bother with them for the longest time, then it hit me one day just how great they were. Thankfully I saw their last three times in Chicago. R.I.P. Bosstones :(

amazing band. even though i've all but abandoned ska and punk, this band is amazing. i'd eat wet baby shit for these guys to get back together and to tour through here.

i found they kinda went downhill the second nate albert was done with the band. the new guy's guitar is all iffy pop-punka nd iffy-ska, where as nate albert could do anything.

I took these guys for granted after awhile, with their playing warped tur every other year, I missed the last two headlining shows they played here in Orlando (the last time I went to see ann beretta/one man army instead). I just figured they'd always be around. Anyhow, great record!

This is my favorite band ever.

Small facts: Patricia is about Dicky's mom. The Bartender's Song is (according to bosstones' legend) about the barkeep who gave them the "Mighty Mighty" to their name, as to avoid issues of conflict with the harvard doo-wop group from the 50's, the Boss-tones.

    God I love this band.
