Operation Ivy were pioneers in fusing ska and punk on the west coast, but on the east coast, it was Boston’s plaid clad Mighty Mighty Bosstones who were the kings, starting it off in 1985. It would be a full decade later when the mainstream would embrace them and shitty bandwagon third wave ska bands would quickly rise and fall. But Devil’s Night Out marks the cornerstone of the genre the band aptly titles skacore. Taking 2 tone-era ska and injecting into it healthy doses of punk, hardcore, metal, and rock, this was a band set out to have a great time, throwing all their influences into a messy stew and seeing what they could come up with. The energetic horn blasts from Johnny Vegas, the deft ska/punk licks laid down by guitar virtuoso Nate Albert, and the unmistakable vocal noise of Dicky Barrett are all on raw display here.

this album was recorded in 3 days...crazy The greatest ska band ever! Dicky....GET THE BAND BACK TOGETHER!!!! I hate this fucking band! haha nice correction taking out the apostrophe. that was actually kinda bothering me. another random trivia - The timing of the radio broadcast at the top of bartenders song was just stumbled upon in mixing. It fits so well a classic must have for any ska/punk fan Damn this is a hot album. Dicky and Jimmy G.'s duet is about as good as is can get man. classic ska/punk album... If they got back together this year, I would buy plane tickets and sleep in the street in whatever city they're in to go see them. I followed them around on the Flogging Molly/Tossers tour (I think their last one?) my senior year of college. We were originally going to just do the Ohio dates, but Lawrence saw us there two nights in a row, and invited us to the Chicago date, on the guest list. It was like a wet dream come true for me. Sigh. "If that was 10-11 songs instead of 16 it would've been so much better. " 'question the answers' was the first ska record i owned, way back in 94. i'm feeling old. It would be great if they came back, but only if Nate Albert and Dennis Brockenborough came along for the ride. Hands down one of the best live bands ever. Ah, those were the good old days. a little late on the review there? i actually really enjoyed 'Pay Attention'...granted it could have been a much better record had they weeded out the filler, but it was still fantastic God, I miss this band. My wife and I recently adopted a 14 year old girl and she believes music begins and ends with Good Charlotte. I have two goals: Keep her off the pole and make her realize how cool MMB are. I could listen to them for ever. Great album." "2005 is totally the year that ska makes a comeback." fantastic album. i thought they were on hiatus, doesn't mean they've split, right? "God, I miss this band. My wife and I recently adopted a 14 year old girl and she believes music begins and ends with Good Charlotte. I have two goals: Keep her off the pole and make her realize how cool MMB are. I could listen to them for ever. Great album." "I don't see how this band can't get back together this year. 2005 is totally the year that ska makes a comeback. I'd pretty much guarantee a Bosstones reunion before the year is through, at least once. "God, I miss this band. I'm not ashamed to say that this band was the band that got me into real music (aka: not shitty radio pop). I don't see how this band can't get back together this year. 2005 is totally the year that ska makes a comeback. I'd pretty much guarantee a Bosstones reunion before the year is through, at least once. Best song. Hope I Never Lose My Wallet. No better words have been spoken. Their best CD by fah, it's wicked pisah. Obviously this is a record any fan of ska/punk or skacore needs to have. "The Bartender's Song" might be my favorite Bosstones song. Great album... Jimmy Gestapo on "A Little Bit Ugly" is fucking amazing. "joe g...hmmm...is there some self-promoting going on...?" joe g...hmmm...is there some self-promoting going on...? Great album, great band. dammit the bosstones need to get back together for just 1 final tour or at least 1 last hometown throwdown cult record! when someboby listen to skapunk, he has to get this! I recently really started getting into MMB and I got this album as well as Let's Face It and this is so much better - classic ska-core. Wow, this is one of the best old albums recently reviewed. I remember getting this and thinking I felt so lame because I wasn't born with a cool name like Dicky. great album, great band... twice i saw them on the warped and they blew me away, in 1/2 an hour.. finally saw them headline a show a year and half ago, what a great hour and half spent.... ""does this band ever really disappoint?" not my fav bosstones record, but still really really good. amazing band. even though i've all but abandoned ska and punk, this band is amazing. i'd eat wet baby shit for these guys to get back together and to tour through here. Yay a review a care enough about to comment on. I took these guys for granted after awhile, with their playing warped tur every other year, I missed the last two headlining shows they played here in Orlando (the last time I went to see ann beretta/one man army instead). I just figured they'd always be around. Anyhow, great record! "does this band ever really disappoint?" while not my favorite by them, still a really fun album to listen to every once in awhile. I miss these guys like crazy. This is my favorite band ever. Hells yeah me niggaz, this album rulz! i used to not like this album when i first got into the Bosstones. granted i was like 13. i now however realize the absolute amazingness that this is. does this band ever really disappoint? Finally, a review of something valid. Too bad this was released 15 years ago. |
