Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)

Nomo are a highly talented and capable band hailing from Detroit. Their music falls into several seperate categories: jazz, soul, dub reggae, and even a hint of funk. The band features 15+ members, yet the music always sounds tight and focused. Seeing them live must be an interesting experience, to say the least.

Unlike the majority of modern bands "occupying" the jazz/soul genres, in this band I can actually hear the heart and passion in the music. It reminds me a bit of Coltrane, James Brown, and at times even a bit of Fugazi or Angst. The album features ten tracks, all of which are worth your while, but my personal favorites would have to be the soulful "La La La La" and the frenetic jazzfest "Better Than That."

I have no doubt in my mind that Nomo has a bright future, since there seems to be a heavy lack of bands like this these days. It's hard to go into much more detail, as I know little of the band's history or members, but all I know is what's important: if you are a fan of the styles listed above, hear this album for your own good health.

I'll check this out since i live in the area. I liked his work in the one year he played for the Tigers.

The band features members of Saturday Looks Good To Me and Antibalas. I think there are MP3s on their website: http://www.nomomusic.com/

I would really appreciate more reviews of music like this. The review itself was a bit scant but it's a lot more interesting to read about a band like this rather than "This band sounds like an amalgamation of Taking Back Sunday and Thursday".

I agree with the guy below........I recieved this in the mail for review and I enjoyed it because it wasn't more of the same. It seemed real and legit. Nowadays, in my opinion atleast, punk rock should be ANYTHING but little rich kids running around with mohawks and chains. If you wanna do that, fine, go for it......but it has nothing to do with the music. And besides, this website (according to it's description) promotes not only punk rock, but all forms of independent music.

it's becoming quickly apparent that the problem is not with the reviews, but with the website name. "punknews.org" is not as limiting a term as some people would like it to be. i, for one, would rather read about this than the newest nu-metal victory crap or crust-fest that equates with "punk" nowadays. and it's independent, against the grain, and interesting, three much more important tenets of punk than "fast, three chords, stupid lyrics."

This may have been said before, but why is this being reviewed on this site? 98% of the time someone declares "o no thats not punk!!!" they're just bitching without grounds, but come on. Jazz and funk?
