Ah, Counting Crows. One of the great bands of our time. Now, I know that most of you hardcore punkers and scene kids are going to disagree with me, but I believe Adam Duritz is a musical genius. He knows how and when to convey the perfect emotion to match his band's music, and he's a pretty darn good pianist too.

When I first heard about this tribute album a while back, I was ecstatic. What could be better than some of my favorite bands playing Counting Crows songs? Then I looked at the tracklisting and didn't recognize any of the groups performing the covers. I almost completely forgot about the album until I was looking for a copy of This Desert Life, my favorite album from the band themselves, and I saw this in the record bin. I thought, what the hell, it's only ten bucks, and I made my purchase.

I popped it into my cheap portable CD player and listened to the album while driving out to my girlfriend's place, constantly looking around for cops who wanted to bust me for driving with earphones. As it was a long drive, I had the chance to listen to it twice. Here's what I thought:

  1. Rydia - "Angels Of The Silences" - Hmmmm...never heard of them. A little too poppy for me. While CC has been known to record some pop-sounding material, this was just too much. Still, it gets points for being a Counting Crows song. I don't know why, I can't really explain it, I just wasn't feeling the track. But I listened to it in its entirety. On to the next one. 4/10
  2. The Rocket Summer - "High Life" - I had never heard of the Rocket Summer, but now I want to hear more of them. This is an amazing and beautiful cover of one of my favorite CC tunes. It's basically just an acoustic guitar or two and a singer - ah, the singer. If you don't like whiny voices, you might be a bit put off by this. While this isn't as bad as say, New Found Glory, it is somewhat present. However, after about the first thirty seconds, I got past it, realizing how good the singer actually was, and didn't even notice it anymore. A great track. 9/10
  3. Number One Fan - "Holiday In Spain" - Right on. While the CC original is great in its own right, I think I love this version more. All the elements of the various instruments come together beautifully for a mid-tempo jam that far surpasses the original. You have to hear it. 10/10
  4. Between The Buried And Me - "Colorblind" - I almost didn't recognize the song when it started. I wasn't expecting a few acoustic, possibly classical guitars to churn out the piano lines of this Duritz classic, or even the few little bursts of flamenco in the beginning; nice touch. However, that's as good as the song gets. The cover isn't horrible, or even bad, but the singer and the drummer sound...stiff. That's the only way to put it: stiff. And wait, this song isn't supposed to have drums... 6/10
  5. Boys Night Out - "Walkaways" - Emo. If you don't like it, you won't like the first minute of this cover. However, if you enjoy the occasional mid-tempo rocker, you should enjoy the second minute, which strangely ends with the beginning of "Round Here," but not the beginning of the next track..."Round Here." I did like the song though. 7/10
  6. Punchline - "Round Here" - Who asked this band to cover this song? Hey guys, this isn't a Me First album. This is a slow, emotional song, not a pop-punk song. As far as pop-punk goes, the song's not too bad. But come on...it's "Round Here." The vocals are nice for the most part, and there are some catchy little riffs here and there, but the song conveys little emotion...wasn't too impressed. 4/10
  7. Houston Calls - "Einstein On A Beach" - Someone should tell Punchline to listen to this song and take notes. Pop-punk covers should be applied to upbeat tunes, not slow ones that are already amazing. Anyway, this band does a pretty good job on this one, with catchy hooks and little touches of electronica. 7/10
  8. Hidden In Plain View - "Mr. Jones" - Simply put, a great cover. It's less folk-ish rock than it is a catchy punk-ish version, but great nonetheless. The vocalist conveys emotion almost as well as Adam himself, but in a different fashion that's not too common among emo-ish groups today. Gotta hear more of this band. Beautiful-ish. 9/10
  9. Bayside - "A Long December" - This band has got it down. Beautiful vocal harmonies, catchy, solid guitars, and perfect rhythm. Again, I liked this song better than the original. It's that good. I found myself singing along harder with this than I ever did with the Crows' version. It's slow, a little hard, and very easy to get lost in. 10/10
  10. The International Language - "Rain King" This song scares me. Thanks for ruining the song. 3/10 (for the neat intro)
  11. The Junior Varsity - "Raining In Baltimore." A good cover. Its original is a classic song and here it's a pretty good, new rendition, enough to keep the average listener interested. I prefer the original though. 7/10
  12. As Tall As Lions - "Children In Bloom" - Yes! That's all I could say when I heard this song. It's hard not to rock out (or speed up if you're driving) while listening to this. The vocalist has an amaaaazingly good voice, reminding me of Dishwalla a bit. The instrumentation is perfect for the track, and I honestly can't decide which version I like better. With a huge buildup and complete rocking out at the end, it's a perfect ending to the compilation. I must hear more of As Tall As Lions, as I can't stop listening to this song. 10/10
All in all, I think the Counting Crows would be proud. Most of the bands here did a fine job of paying tribute to one of the most influential bands of the last decade. And if nothing else, hopefully this album will gain the Crows some new fans, and gain the not-too-widely known artists on here some recognition as well. Good album.

* - This is my first review. Keep that in mind, please. I've never seen such a critical group of commentators on a website, so I'm hoping for some slack here.

    Im appalled by the fact that not that many people called out how much counting crows blows, and how this albums title blows even harder! They should have just called this thing "Dont buy this garbage" cuz that phrase is synonymous with anything calling itself "indie" or "a tribute to counting crows". To me anyway.

    The Counting Crows were a lame pop band (yes, they weren't a rock band by ANY definition) and these bands covering them are all lame pop bands. And no, this has nothing to do with me being "punk rock" (whatever that means), it has to do with me being a fan of music. And to the guy who said the Counting Crows are "post-grunge"......what the hell is that? I honestly don't see how you can relate these guys in any way to Nirvana. Anyway, fuck the Counting Crows, when I want something non-violent to listen to I'll stick to John Coltrane, not this crap.

    Wow, this jerkoff has apparently never read a Jesse review. The fact that he kept calling it Punknews.com is hilarious as well. All you fuckwits complaining about the content really amuse me. As somebody else said, this site depends on reader contributions for much of the content, and is therefore largely steered by those who read it. If you want better reviews, write some. If you want news on what you think are punk bands, then do some homework and contribute some news on your favorite bands once in a while. There are many things you can do if you're unhappy with what's on this site. The #1 option I would suggest to you, though, is LEAVE AND NEVER COME BACK. Honestly, those of us who are happy with the site couldn't give any less of a fuck whether you come back to post your bitchy inane comments. What is making you read these reviews anyway? Just skip over them to the ones for bands you care about. Bitch bitch bitch...

    And to Brian, Adam, Aubin, and Scott Emeritus, keep up the good work. Even though I never cared for Counting Crows or a single band on this comp, I'm still glad it's here for all to read. Rock hard, rock salt.

    Anyway, how does trashing a bunch of post-grunge also-rans who ceased to be popular about seven years ago get you scene points? Surely if you rolled up (in your girl jeans and tight lumberjack shirt) going "you know who really sucks? Counting Crows..." most scenesters would just be like "who??"

    Call me punker than thou for bashing a tone-deaf, annoying corporate radio dickpig ensemble such as Counting Crows, but for christ sake have you no decency man? This band is not, and never will be anything in the same galaxy as punk. None of the bands on this compilation will ever be anything other than awful indie bands who can't score mainstream alternative success so they pretend to buy into the ethics of punk and continue to pollute my fucking scene.

    My only comfort is that most of the people who like this dreck will have office jobs in a few years and this indie shit will die just as fast as screamo and alien ant farm.

    I have to laugh at all the "punker than thou" below who are doing their best to trash CC. Counting Crows is an amazing live band, and their albums contain songwriting that the shitty bands you listen to would give their left nuts for. The people that are whining about "deducting scene points" for whatever follicle transgression you think Adam Duritz may have committed are the same ones writing the names of every MEST member on their Geometry notebooks.

    David Letterman said it best when introducing CC on his show in 1994. Holding up a copy of August and Everything After, Letterman told his viewers, "If you don't have this album, something's Wrong with you."

    (Song-by-song review works for cover compilations, IMO, as they let you know who is on the record, what they play and how much they suck compared to the original. Thats all people who might be thinking of buying the record really want to know..... there's just not even the remotest risk that I am ever going to buy this, is all.)

    before you would have to buy 3, 4, maybe 5 records to have all these shitty songs in one place, now there all here in this one great collection.

    my room mate tells me she saw adam duritz on something on tv and they were talking about how he never had real dreads, he just wears wigs. if thats true thats fucking retarded. and although they are generally a shitty band, their first album is pretty moving. it makes me want to cry. :(

    Ok the Counting Crows are a pretty good band for being "radio rock" but I'd hardly call them one of the best of our time. Haha that's such a bizarre thing to say. Add that to the fact that there is no reason to release a whole album of "indie" bands covering their songs and I'm gonna have to say this is the worst concept for a record I've ever heard. Why on earth would I want to listen to Boys Night Out butchering mediocre songs? What do you think the odds are that someone who likes Boys Night Out likes Counting Crows? I maybe wrong but I'm gonna go with REAL FUCKIN SLIM.

    Good review. I like the song by song breakdown since this is a cover album and it helps let me know if enough people got it right or wrong to warrent a purchase. But if this was a normal album, that type of review doesn't work as well.

    I'm a big Crows fan too, so I will be picking this up soon!

    Oh and, Arthur, you're about as far from clever as I've ever seen (Chinatown) Give up.

    You gave a clear, concise view of the album, and anybody should be able to gauge whether or not they want to buy this buy what you said. But at the same time, the song-by-song review style isn't my favorite. Reviews tend to work better in a flowing format. But that's only my two cents. Overall, I liked it.

    Any band who does some sort of variety of screaming normally (Boys Night Out, BBTAM) leaves it out here, thankfully. BNO's contribution seems like a premonition of their upcoming album, though; really slowed down, fleshed-out instrumentals and parts.

    The Bayside song is really good, their vocals have improved more and more since that shitty split they put out.

    The Punchline one is actually pretty decent until they start playing power chords...cheese to the max.

    And the Rocket Summer vocals? Easily the biggest whine I've heard in a loooooong time.

    Still not quite sure what to think overall, though.

    I've never heard Number One Fan, but if they ruined 'Holiday In Spain,' I'm not going to be a happy guy.

    The only band on here I would want to listen to is As Tall As Lions. Score's for them.

    I hated most of the "grunge/MTV alternative" scene of the early 90's, and Counting Crows was one of the worst. Boring psuedo-hippy music for stoners and kids in flannel who thought they were intellectuals. That they have a tribute from a bunch of boring indie bands--I know this because they were kind enough to put "Indie" in the title--further illustrates this.
