Can I say this is the best live punk band ever? Yes, I can, since I have lost count on the number of shows I attended for Lagwagon. It must have been close to ten since 1994 or something. Whether it was in a small club at the start of their career or larger venues when they were making a name for themselves or at festivals at the time almost ALL kids wore their shirts, this band has never ever disappointed me.

Sure, there's the typical party bands that have the potential of getting people off their feet with their music like Flogging Molly or Mad Caddies for example, but there's only a couple bands that play "my dearest" melodic punk rock live and succeed in getting me as ecstatic as their studio albums did.

These 22 live songs recorded in Hollywood's House Of Blues in spring 2003 dig through their 6 magnificent albums, of which their 4 first ones rank with my top 30 albums of all time, no doubt, with Trashed being one of the best punk albums ever written. Joey Cape's voice has been praised enough I guess, and maybe is the main reason for this band's live success, but the guy is sounding always in tune, something which is one of the most difficult obstacles any band in our punk scene has to deal with and too often fails if you ask me.

No need to describe their sound for sure, but let me tell you that these recordings taken care of by Ryan Greene just sound deservingly clear and close to the original I'd expected it to sound live. I never liked the comics that came with these Live In A Dive series, but that's probably because I lack good taste when it comes to humor.

A few downsides: I know they hate to play "Brown Eyed Girl," but was disappointed that they didn't include it anyway, and the version of "Back One Out" wasn't the best I heard them perform that song either. Why in hell didn't they play their "All Aboard the Lagwagon" or "Know It All" classics, and why wasn't "Bye For Now" not the closing song? Well, you can't have them all I suppose. Although I still prefer their studio albums above a live recording (something that goes for every band) this one sounds clean enough to get some spins in the next few weeks here, and is for sure one thing a diehard fan like me will grab back to with nostalgic feelings after this band has disbanded one day. Let's hope I'll have grandchildren before that happens.

Yessum it was Fat, War was the first full length original 45 or 46 was a bootlegs and bsides type of thing, they had a couple of songs from so long and thanks for all the shoes. Longest line was a ep-they've released a pretty healthy amount of eps on fat haven't they? The decline was a ep not a record-only one song regardless of how long it was. Lagwagon is the shit by the way, I haven't got this cd yet I'm lagging ass 'cause I'm broke. They are the shit live. Once Joey had a fucked up throat and he had us do punk rock kareoke with him. He picked people from the crowd and let the sing whatever song we wanted, it was the shit. He promised they'd come back and they did for like 5 bucks a ticked which earns them a shitload of points with me. Cause I'm in Arizona and it's hot so that tight that he did so. Anywho yay fat period fuck all fat bashers!

Pully has always been 'meh' in my book, and this is coming from someone who had esteem driven engine when it was new. I personally think 'matters' is their best album, no wonder it inspired strung out to work w/ matt hyde. anyway, pully is cool, but their lyrics mostly suck and scotts voice isn't half of what the capers can do. and technically they are very solid, but can't touch the wagon in that regard either, especially the stuff on blaze and feelings.

diesel boy is pretty bad, but funny and nostalgic. they have about 10 songs i like. rubbing the elf is pretty great, and of course titty twister (and fat vol. 2 in general) is classic.

Don't disregard entire labels, no matter how many shitty bands they have. I really can't defend Kung Fu though. That shit's awful.

The fact that Lagwagon is still this popular is the only thing that gives me any hope in the scene as it exists today. It's pretty rare to hear new(ish) bands doing good quality punk rock with some energy and balls.

Rise Against was the first I heard in a while, and the first band that screamed and I liked it. Strike Anywhere came soon after and Thrice followed (ok so they went a different direction but i still love that band). Newer bands tearing it up are bands like A Wilhelm Scream, Much The Same, Near Miss, Break The Silence.. ok BTS is screamy too but it's still got a lot of good punk elements.

I just saw Avail a few weeks ago. They put on an excellent show. I see where you're coming from with the HWM comparison, but HWM is far superior. I'm seeing them in about two weeks too. It was said in an article that Bracket could have been the next Green Day, so that might give you an idea of what they're like. They've got really catchy songs and interesting vocals. 1. Greatest Story Ever Told (can't beat songs The Rablin' Boys of Pleasure and The Revisionist)

The Larry Arms are slightly outclassed by D4. As much as I think these two bands are currently the most unique in punk rock, D4 have that little extra something special. It might be the distortion, or the vocals slightly buried in the mix...whatever. These guys are the definiton of punk rock.

Against Me! is fine too, but I usually find myself listening to only a few select tracks on ATEC (tracks 6, 8, 9 and 11), while the remainder of the album tends to get ignored.

On the other hand, I can't listen to a D4 album without going from beginning to end, as each and every song is incredible. Their sound never gets old. When the hell will they get a nice T-Shirt design anyway?

I had to sit through Rufio and Yellowcard a couple years ago just to see Lagwagon at the Metro in Chicago. All the little kids were going nuts for those two shitty bands and the quote that I heard from this kid was awful....."Who the hell is Lagwagon and why would they headline over Rufio?" Kids don't even listen to Lagwagon anymore, what a sad sad world.

    Strung Out - 8.5
    Swingin' Utters - 7
    No Use for a Name - 6

I'm torn on listening to this cd. I personally like lagwagon alot and think all of their albums are great, and this live cd sounds great. But the first thing I noticed was that it does sound perfect, and was wondering if it was even necessary. I personally like the slopiness, craziness, and just all around randomness of a live show, because I think it's supposed to be a totally different experience than the album. But the more I listened to it I noticed changes, although subtle, and joey says many a funny things. I think more than anything this is just nice to have as a greatest hits of lagwagon (although I agree, why no bye for now?). In conclusion though, I like it, alot.

Lagwagon rules. yes they are underrated. yes, joey cape is an overlooked genious that too often gets lumped in w/ 'mindless skate punk pennywise, dude brah bands' but their is a hell of a lot more depth and variety to the wagon than most skate punk bands, especially lyrically, but musically they do some impressive shit in their later releases. and of course, joey's voice is one of the most endearing in punk.

their live show is amazing, both times i saw them were excellent shows.

Sweet Jesus man, you need to get out more. I lost count how many times I endured Lagwagon, mostly because I've tried to forget them. I only remember Joey leaning into the mic a lot and looking really short around his band. They mostly stood around and played pitch-perfect renditions of their songs. Why on earth they need a live album demonstrating this, and why they keep making identical-sounding albums with the spit-polish perfection of Ryan Greene, and WHY THE FUCK TO THEY NEED HIM FOR A LIVE ALBUM is completely, totally, and utterly beyond me.
