Unwritten LawHere's To The Mourning (2005)Warner Music Group Reviewer Rating: User Rating: Contributed by: Brian (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on February 15th 2005
Here's To The Mourning doesn't have very many excuses it can fall back on. It's not the band's major label debut, or their sophomore effort, or the result of a serious member change (you can't honestly say the drummer was an integral part of the band's previous albums). No one went through a serious drug addiction phase (as far as the public knows), family members were in fact not dropping like flies, and there wasn't any life-altering terrorist attack on our country since their last album; so why, then, is Unwritten Law's newest offering so...bad?

the album isnt that bad at all..after a few listens i enjoyed it a lot more.. as a fan, even of elva!, this album is very bad. only good song is lost control or whatever it's called. i have played this about 20 times and it sucks, even for a fucking rock album. This one sat on the shelf for a few months and I'm only listening to it now -- but holy hell it's bad. Makes the new Goldfinger record sound good - and that's not easy. wow, u all r so in to steriotypes and fitting them in to some mold of punk, rock, emo, metal, or stuff like that that u can't even see that most of their songs r great listening songs that rock, and just cuz they got a lil softer on this album duznt mean they don't still hav a good sound even if it's different, variety's good, most people wud agree that change is good sumtimes 2, it's better than being boring, think about that next time u dye ur hair or change ur shirt, it might not b as preppy or punk as the last 1 u wore, but it's different and it shows a different side of u Sad but so true. The songs are "fun" to listen to, yet the lyrics are so horrible! That dude on MTV2 just likened Unwritten Law to Menudo!! You should've seen the look on Scott Russo's face!!! hahahahahahahaha! I agree with the person below me. It's different. It's a good record. So what if it's not "punk?" Hardly any of the bands covered on this site are "punk." Just because this CD is different than the others doesn't mean it's not good ~ Get in the car take a drive and listen to it you might change your minds Tom McClintock Wade had an influence in this band heavily, the only guy with a little creativity. Now that Wade left and took the creativity with him, these guys are just trying to rip off grinspoon with poor results. S/t is still in my top 5 though Unwritten Law at one point was considered...punk. They have a few fast songs off S/T. Wow, I didn't know this band was so hated. It's an okay cd, I like the drums. "Lost Control" is pretty awesome though. It's not great though, pretty boring most of it. this is my score for everyone who wasted there time by even reading this review, then posting about it ....it doesn't take the intelligence a retard has to realize this album was not written for people who frequent this site....punknews.org needs not to even review this "lackadaisically" I feel embarrassed for the San Diego scene now, first Blink 182 and now this--now only Rocket from the Crypt will redeem them. This record is terrible. I listened to it once when I got it and now it's in the vault with the rest of the terrible music I have purchased. I used to think Scott Russo was one of the better musicians in the scene. Not after this piece of shit. If people are dropping the Smiths name, they have troubles because THE SMITH FUCKING BLOW. Morrisey the asexual is as whiny as they get. The Smiths are overrated & aren't worth listening to, fucking boring shit! pop crap. very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very bad. get's half a star for lost control. i just wanted to let all u fags know that u guys I was smart, I realized that Oz Factor sucked and knew this band was horrible. I want to see a showdown between the ultra-elitist Jonesthebones and the anti-elistist Paul. It'll shake the very groouuunnd. "'Wonderwall' by Oasis" there's a new cock ass in town, and his names paul,,,watch out chinajones "paul is tired of getting punk-served. This score is for the new Goldfinger album. Holy jesus does that cd have sellout written all over it or what. There is one punk song on the entire cd....song 8. "I pretty much agree. I fucking hate the Ramones, but I do like Jawbreaker and Lifetime quite a bit. I wouldn't call mentioning them 'name dropping'." "if i hear rock n roll highschool or i want to be sedated on the radio i change the channel" "San Diego has some great bands. I don't know what you kids are talkin about... No Knife, Pinback, Black Heart Procession to name a few..." "When you listed the "big" names producer Sean Beaven worked with, you forgot to mention that he was behind the helm for "Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails. It isn't his fault this album isn't amazing..." San Diego has some great bands. I don't know what you kids are talkin about... No Knife, Pinback, Black Heart Procession to name a few... "and would everybody please quit namedropping black flag, the decendents, the clash, the misfits, jawbreaker, the smiths, lifetime and everyother 'look how cool i am cuz i know about old bands see how much cred i have' bands in lame attempts to prove how much more they know about punk than the next guy. Tim Horton's has indeed come through in the clutch on many a drunken night. battalion of saints were from San Diego....so it's not all bad....i guess. score is for The Plot To Blow Up the Eiffel Tower being the best san diego band still active now "(you can't honestly say the drummer was an integral part of the band's previous albums). " so who saw this band on MTV's "Sweet sixteen" show? "Here's LInkin Park!!" good review. some songs are ok. About 3 are ok, and JUST OK. And Unwritten Law being my absolute favorite band, ok is not good enough. This album sucks, but get any other UL album (OZ and Blue Room for punk fans, S/T and elva for anyone) All of the other albums are great. Blue room is better than OZ. Paul, we think it's great that you know how to type, really, but you don't need to post 34 times per thread. "American Idiot" sounds nothing like "Doublewhiskeycokenoice", and if it did I highly doubt that Billie Joe was sitting in the stuio thinking "oh shit ive got no ideas for this album, lets rip off Dillinger 4, that will get us a grammy!" Long ass comment two spots below was mine. Yeah PB is the shit. I gotta get my ass to Pacific Beach and pick up some whores in my blink182-bumping-semper-fi-until-i-die-SUV, after I take down these methamphetamines, and fuck up some queers. fuck all ya UL haters. San Diego rules. Score is for anyone who pays someone else to write their music for them. Sadly enough no matter what you say UL has sunk to the level of brittney, p diddy and simple plan. While pop music/pop punk can be enjoyable you cannot respect/listen to an artist who does not write/create their own music. Old UL was better because THEY wrote the music, played with passion. Even blink writes their own music, while you may not like it, what songs have you written etc etc etc. you have to give respect (grudgingly of course). And no, punk news.org is not any less educated than any other punk website, your level of intellignece cannot be measured by a comments on a random messageboard. To anyone dimwitted enough to try and diss San Diego, we may not be perfect, but we have a beautiful city, beaches, and a friendly and diverse community (not to mention a vibrant punk rock scene as well). I as well hate the military presence in San Diego (mainly marines getting drunk and trying to fight high school kids/pick up on your girlfriend) but I would not choose another place to live and grow up. I only wish I could afford to live here after I'm done with college. "'Wonderwall' by Oasis" man i'm bored fuck off! you try working at a desk all day! corporate punkx unite! This score, rather. Score's for the '99 Sabres, even though we got totally fucked over by Brett Hull and the Stars. I find this is a great album but it should not have been reviewed on this site. Point in check, about the 70 previous comments. Paul is dumb. "Again I will ask...why is this here? It has nothing to do with independent music, nor does it have anything to do with hard music. I mean, if it ain't punk rock then great....this site should be varied.....but this is almost as bad as putting up a nickleback or p diddy review....come on guys" Paul, we think it's great that you know how to type, really, but you don't need to post 34 times per thread. "Again I will ask...why is this here? It has nothing to do with independent music, nor does it have anything to do with hard music. I mean, if it ain't punk rock then great....this site should be varied.....but this is almost as bad as putting up a nickleback or p diddy review....come on guys." "On the whole "songs Green Day stole" thing, take a listen to "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wonderwall" by Oasis" "will everybody stop calling this garbage pop punk...the Ramones were pop punk......this is just plain BAD radio pop" Great cd, but it doesn't beat Elva or their Music in High Places one. Very cool album! Still has the unwritten law sound to it, its definalty not like there older stuff though, but still has the unmistakable ul guitar riffs. It seems people today love all that screamo punk/rock stuff and hate all the old pop punk bands. Again I will ask...why is this here? It has nothing to do with independent music, nor does it have anything to do with hard music. I mean, if it ain't punk rock then great....this site should be varied.....but this is almost as bad as putting up a nickleback or p diddy review....come on guys. ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _____________ "This is better than any faggot hardcore band. Or grind band. Or metalcore band" The lyrics are bad, but at least the songs are catchy, and not as insulting as like Simple Plan. who the fuck is steve. as far as i know scott russo has been singing for them since blue room came out. i am a huge unwritten law fan and this album is truely a let down. no hooks. no way. as far as classifiying music is concerned, fuck that shit. good music can stand for itself, regardless of where Best Buy shelves it. i never thought unwritten law could let me down....i guess i will have to keep listening to blue room. Unwritten Law is not a punk band anymore. Everyone needs to just calm themselves. Steve's voice has gotten progressively better and more interesting since the first cd's. They are a rock band now from ELVA to this CD. Theres no need to bash just to be punk. It's funny how you have people comparing this to P.Diddy and britney spears, I mean, talk about pushing the limit just a bit. This CD is soft at times, but soft parts in songs are sometimes good. i still prefer good mourning by alk3. this score is for that. "Self Titled: 10/10" "Let's be honest here: this album really wouldn't be much better if Wade played on it." clikatat ikatowi and three mile pilot are from san diego too Let's be honest here: this album really wouldn't be much better if Wade played on it. This album is much much better than Elva but much much worse than their self titled. Elva was boring from start to finish. This one has quite a few boring songs but I do like songs 5, 6, 11, 12 and the hidden song. "Yes. Because i've never heard of 'drive like jehu' i don't know "anything" about music. Not only that, I "only listen to pop punk and rap." " Elva was boring compared to the S/T with the pyramid on it. That was pretty good. And then this... I liked Elva a lot, but i don't care to listen to a second of this album. seriously. how many different combinations can you get out of three chords? D4 rules. Green Day rules. not really, dipshit. it's a fucking three-chord punk song. d4 jokes about green day ripping it off, but those bands are friends. take your head out of your ass. "American Idiot" is a blatant rip-off of Dillinger Four's "Doublewhiskeycokenoice" "Dubya has had the best education money can buy." I will take your mother out for a nice seafood dinner, and never call her back! "punknews.org posters are just a less populated (and less educated...sadly) version of pitchfork. bitches." I admit, Save Me is a real catchy song and rocks. But it's done with that hired-gun songwriter bitch, so it loses all integrity. "Go fuck yourselves, San Diego" ahahaha anchorman... punknews.org posters are just a less populated (and less educated...sadly) version of pitchfork. bitches. Jones is right, DLJ is one of the more influential bands of the last 15 years... sooooo many bands are trying to sound JUST like them right now. "if youre saying drive like jehu were not important to music in general, or had no impact on music especially in the 90's, then you dont know anything about music, or you only listen to pop punk and rap" Go fuck yourselves, San Diego "Who? Assuming a city can be the sum total of its bands or that bands have anything to do with the merit of a city which is ridiculous in itself, apparently San Diego = barely on the map musically. No knife sucks. " The drummer leaving did have an impact, as this recording is absolutely horrible in comparison to their other albums. Talk about lame fills! On the whole "songs Green Day stole" thing, take a listen to "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wonderwall" by Oasis why did wade leave the band? i vaguely remember hearing something bout him not getting along with scotts girlfriend. is this correct? No Knife is aweomse. "you can't honestly say the drummer was an integral part of the band's previous albums" I'm not a die hard fan, but I have all of their albums, and consider them to be descent. I think this fall in the same category. Its not the worlds best band/album, but it is catchy. It is a fine record, and nobody is going to die because they haven't "progressed." Apparently they like what they play, they know how to play that way, and I dont mind. "drive like jehu, boilermaker, tristeza" san diego = drive like jehu, boilermaker, tristeza and no knife "you can't honestly say the drummer was an integral part of the band's previous albums" "I wonder if the Dillinger Four even realizes/cares about Green Day ripping off one of their coolest songs." If one of Dillinger Four's coolest songs sounds like "American Idiot" than they need to start writing better material. That's the ho-hum song on that album. I wonder if the Dillinger Four even realizes/cares about Green Day ripping off one of their coolest songs. San Diego is a giant dive bar for cheap women and military assholes with the diversity and culture of a white supremacists convention (go to LA for the browns). It's a waste of beautiful weather and beautiful beaches. will everybody stop calling this garbage pop punk...the Ramones were pop punk......this is just plain BAD radio pop oh , and the rip about the guy bombing the guitarest cuz he heard the demo's was pretty clever I was never a big UL fan, but I dug about 1/2 of Elva (guilty pleasure) and the s/t my friend bought at warped 98 was a pretty cool pop punk record ('sorry' is a very great fun song) I agree this isn't UL's finest effort, but to say the drummer isn't important in any band is ignorant. Bad drummers make bad bands. Wade is a good drummer. Very bad pop music from what has always been a very bad pop band. This shit is in the same league as Britney Spears and P Diddy....why it's here? I don't know......camp value? maybe if they worked with the sublime guys like they did with Elva, they might have made a good record, fuck nu metal dudes. and the last 2 goldfinger records are absolute shit, dont kid yourself. San Diego rocks so fuck off. very weak offering from UL, elva was solid, oz factor was an awesome album but this album lacks any passion whatsoever. maybe all the previous drama for the band was a good thing, who knows? I'll second that comment. Wade was an essential part of this band, maybe even more so than original bassist John Bell. Wade tempered the rest of the band's pop/metal tendencies with his own punk influences, and hearing this album without him (even considering the contributions of the new drummer, who played with RFTC) shows the missing element. This just sounds like a metal band poorly trying to go pop maybe in describing a lot of other bands you may have been correct, but i think that unwritten law is one band where the drummer is an integral part of the band. wade's energy and attitude was perfect for a punk rock band. well, as far as i can tell from interviews and shit. Yeah the Green Day stuff was posted here several months ago. Craziness. Did you ever hear about the time the UL guitarist nearly got killed by his next door neighbour, who planted a bomb in his garden? Maybe he heard the demos for this album... this band was such a good pop-punk/skate punk band back in the day. their california punk sound was similar to face to face. i hate to be "that guy" Check this out: Gusto was a great album. Although most of the songs weren't "punk" per say, they were still really catchy. Listen to "Footlong" and tell me it ain't catchy, you prissy bitches. gusto was a good album....just not a guttermouth album. lemon water is genius This really is awful...I thought maybe it might grow on me like Elva did...but no...I cant even listen to this thing all the way through. Kind of like Guttermouth's Gusto...yeah its that bad. "These guys suck as much as San Diego itself" I saw them on leno last week. Unbelievably boring performance of a horrible song. Its amazing how far these guys have fallen. * dont pose like youre in high school i knew this was gonna suck when i saw the ad for this in AP, fuckin grow up you fucks in this band. dont pose your in high school, act your age. fuck is it really that awful? i havent heard much of it.. but i'm concerned, having been such a huge fan of elva and s/t as well. When you listed the "big" names producer Sean Beaven worked with, you forgot to mention that he was behind the helm for "Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails. It isn't his fault this album isn't amazing... Their self-titled was fucking great; Elva was fucking great; this is fucking shit. There's just nothing here anymore. wow. i'm kinda saddened to hear this is so terrible...then again i had the feeling it would be. | Features
