Here's To The Mourning doesn't have very many excuses it can fall back on. It's not the band's major label debut, or their sophomore effort, or the result of a serious member change (you can't honestly say the drummer was an integral part of the band's previous albums). No one went through a serious drug addiction phase (as far as the public knows), family members were in fact not dropping like flies, and there wasn't any life-altering terrorist attack on our country since their last album; so why, then, is Unwritten Law's newest offering so...bad?

While I'd love to blame perhaps Unwritten Law's three year idle period between proper albums (2003's Music In High Places was a made-for-MTV acoustic set that comprised mostly of material from Elva) or maybe the producers' lack of ranging experience with more punk-oriented bands (the big names across the "worked with" board are bascially Marilyn Manson and Staind), their newest album is simply hook-free yet radio-ready pop-rock with flat-out terrible songwriting and structure spread out across the 46-minute length of a compact disc.

It's bad enough the band pulls off mindboggling irony in the first five minutes; it's not very convincing when the words "get up get up get up" come across in a pathetically sedated, lackadaisically-sounding manner. In fact, strength of lyrical quality itself isn't very convincing when words like that come across at all. The trend continues from there on in with horrendously-narrated tales of crackwhores ("I like the way that she feels when she feels me" - "I Like The Way"), self-loathing ("I'm useless, lazy, perverted / you hate me" - lead single "Save Me," co-written by Christina Aguilera assistant Linda Perry), and what I'm guessing is a night on the town that doesn't end until dawn ("Slowdance, take a chance with me! / Dance with me, dance with me!", which comes from the torture that is "Hide Away").

The vocals have taken a turn for the worse especially. Loaded with constant effects, be it reverb, echo, or otherwise, and seemingly pushed back, they just sound lazy at times and forcefully raspy, whereas with all the band's other recordings, it seemed a lot more natural and flowed with the music nicely. Of course, I could say it flows with the music nicely here too, as artificial vocals help represent painfully calculated and topically-trite music.

Here's to the mourning of Unwritten Law.

wow, u all r so in to steriotypes and fitting them in to some mold of punk, rock, emo, metal, or stuff like that that u can't even see that most of their songs r great listening songs that rock, and just cuz they got a lil softer on this album duznt mean they don't still hav a good sound even if it's different, variety's good, most people wud agree that change is good sumtimes 2, it's better than being boring, think about that next time u dye ur hair or change ur shirt, it might not b as preppy or punk as the last 1 u wore, but it's different and it shows a different side of u

I agree with the person below me. It's different. It's a good record. So what if it's not "punk?" Hardly any of the bands covered on this site are "punk."

As far as Linda Perry writing "Save Me"...I read a couple of interviews where Scott Russo says that he already had the song written with about 8 or 9 different choruses. None of the choruses were up to par with the record execs at Lava, so they offered to hook him up with some professional songwriters like The Matrix, Linda Perry, etc. Scott says he picked Linda Perry because he is a fan of her work in Four Non Blondes etc., and thinks that she's a cool person.

As far as Wade being fired from the band, do a google search with Wade Youman fired, and there ya go for both sides of the story.

    My Score:

Score is for anyone who pays someone else to write their music for them. Sadly enough no matter what you say UL has sunk to the level of brittney, p diddy and simple plan. While pop music/pop punk can be enjoyable you cannot respect/listen to an artist who does not write/create their own music. Old UL was better because THEY wrote the music, played with passion. Even blink writes their own music, while you may not like it, what songs have you written etc etc etc. you have to give respect (grudgingly of course). And no, punk news.org is not any less educated than any other punk website, your level of intellignece cannot be measured by a comments on a random messageboard. To anyone dimwitted enough to try and diss San Diego, we may not be perfect, but we have a beautiful city, beaches, and a friendly and diverse community (not to mention a vibrant punk rock scene as well). I as well hate the military presence in San Diego (mainly marines getting drunk and trying to fight high school kids/pick up on your girlfriend) but I would not choose another place to live and grow up. I only wish I could afford to live here after I'm done with college.

Very cool album! Still has the unwritten law sound to it, its definalty not like there older stuff though, but still has the unmistakable ul guitar riffs. It seems people today love all that screamo punk/rock stuff and hate all the old pop punk bands.
The album rocks, good beats, catchy lyrics, UL have always been like this, so stop bitchy about how simple the lyrics are!
And please dont compare them to simple plan or P.diddy, I'll take this over all the new shit like Taking Back Sunday and Thursday.

who the fuck is steve. as far as i know scott russo has been singing for them since blue room came out. i am a huge unwritten law fan and this album is truely a let down. no hooks. no way. as far as classifiying music is concerned, fuck that shit. good music can stand for itself, regardless of where Best Buy shelves it. i never thought unwritten law could let me down....i guess i will have to keep listening to blue room.

    My Score:

Unwritten Law is not a punk band anymore. Everyone needs to just calm themselves. Steve's voice has gotten progressively better and more interesting since the first cd's. They are a rock band now from ELVA to this CD. Theres no need to bash just to be punk. It's funny how you have people comparing this to P.Diddy and britney spears, I mean, talk about pushing the limit just a bit. This CD is soft at times, but soft parts in songs are sometimes good.

Negatives of the album are definitely:

    Lyrics
    "get up"

"I Like the Way" is incredibly creative and a great song (of course minus the lyrics.)

This album is much much better than Elva but much much worse than their self titled. Elva was boring from start to finish. This one has quite a few boring songs but I do like songs 5, 6, 11, 12 and the hidden song.

My expectations for this cd were very low so I can at least appreciate that it's a major improvement from Elva.

    My ranking of UL cd's.

    Oz Factor: 2/10
    Blue Room: 6/10
    Self Titled: 10/10
    Elva: 0/10
    Here's to the Mourning: 8/10

If Here's to the Mourning was released right after the S/T I probably would have given it a much lower score.

man. this is rock bottom. probably the worst cd i've bought in a long long time. this makes Goldfingers 'open your eyes' sound ...good. its that bad.

the vocals are shit. what happened to scotts voice? he sounds like he hasn't exercised his vocals in years, whats he been doing, smoking a pack a day and never singing? so weak and strained, raspy and pathetic. The lyrics (UL's never been good at writing them) are horrid. The music is boring. its like lostprophets/hoobastank 'heavy-radio style' riffs, but w/ the suck effect on 10. hell 11.

honestly, good charlottes song 'boys and girls' is better than most of the stuff on here, lyricallly, vocally and musically. I really mean that.

Wade tempered the rest of the band's pop/metal tendencies with his own punk influences, and hearing this album without him (even considering the contributions of the new drummer, who played with RFTC) shows the missing element. This just sounds like a metal band poorly trying to go pop

Thieves thanked for Green Day Grammy inspiration

Rockers Green Day owe the success of their Grammy-winning album American Idiot to thieves who stole the masters they were working on as their new project.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong admits the theft made him so angry he was inspired to write some of his best material, which led to the group being nominated for seven Grammys and picking up Best Rock Album on Sunday night.

He says, "It ended up being good because we were readying ourselves to go where we hadn't gone before."

The punk star was so annoyed he left his wife and kids for a month and went on a hate-filled bender to find fresh inspiration.

He adds, "I drank a lot of red wine, and vodka tonics. I was searching for something. I'm not sure it was the most successful trip."

On returning home, Armstrong caught TV news footage of the war in Iraq and decided to write an album full of songs about his feelings for modern America.

Bassist Mike Dirnt isn't fretting about the stolen tapes. In a message posted on the group's website, he wrote: "My only request is whoever's got those songs, if you put it out, put a decent cover on it."
    ----------------------------------------------------------- -----------

Kind of funny they're ranting about thieves, seeing as they stole their massive single from you-know-who.......
