For those of you that don't know, the Effigies are the greatest punk rock/hardcore band to ever come out of Chicago. This career retrospective compiles all of their classic songs onto one disc, making it an essential purchase for any fan of punk music. Not only does this band write great songs, but they know how to play them as well. The Effigies are very gifted and creative musicians, as there are a variety of different musical influences present on this album, yet it all seems to fit nicely together.

"Security" is easily one of the catchiest anthems in punk rock history; the song blends both funk and hard rock through a punk blender. "Body Bag" and "Quota" are dark, hardcore punk at it's finest, while "Haunted Town" and "We're Da Machine" are a bit catchier and no less intense. "Hand Signals," on the other hand, is a heavy and dark rocker.

There aren't really many bands I can compare the Effigies to; they at times have a "DOA-ish" sound, but that can change based on the song. This band is really, like all amazing bands, a sound of its own. I think that they recently reunited and are doing some touring; here's to hoping they write some new material and add to their amazing collection.

Everything I've heard from this band has been great. I still mostly know about them from that cute little feud they had with AoF though.

    this stuff is genius

One of the best midwest bands of the 1980s. Heck, of any punk decade! Along with Naked Raygun, Zero Boys, Toxic Reasons, and NOTA, the Effigies were great. This record is a nice collection of their songs, avoiding the later, weaker "Fly on the Wire" stuff. I think this, or the "Haunted Town" 12" and "We're Da Machine" 12"s are the essential Effigies to track down.

For good overviews of the various bands and scenes, find the following 2 compilations: "The Master Tapes Volume 1" and "The Middle Of America" from 1983. More info at http://www.collectorscum.com/volume3/illinois/

for those of you wondering....i like to keep reviews short and to the point. I'd rather say what I'm gonna say in a paragraph rather than bullshitting my way through 4 of them. This album rocks.

Short, but as long as the word gets out I'm cool with it. There's not one second on this CD I don't love. I was able to get a ripped CD of their other two LPs and the live 7", and they totaly deserve reissue. Great, more post-punk stuff.

My review of their second reunion show got screwed up, but it's still in the archives. Check it out.
