The Academy Is...; let's go ahead and get the fact out that they have a horrible name. With horrible names running throughout America nowadays, we can't judge a band simply by a name.

The Academy Is... hail from Chicago, which is famous for Mike Ditka and The Super Bowl Shuffle. This is their first full-length album and their first release on their new label, Fueled By Ramen. Also, it is rumored that they signed with Atlantic last year.

The opening song, "Attention," starts simply by the line, "Attention attention! / May I have all your eyes and ears to the front of the room / if only, if only for one second"or this one from "Classifieds:" "My life reads like the classifieds / Pages of what's for sale / what's on the auction block." This basically follows the lyrical path that this CD takes. They really are lyrics that could be written by a teenager who has some kind of angst towards a girl, a parent, something like that.

The singer's voice is tolerable at times, like in "Black Mamba," where the music and his voice during the chorus flow together quite well. His crooning can at times be very catchy, and at other points, like in "The Phrase That Pays," his voice makes me want to yank the music out of the CD player and smash it into a thousand pieces. It's like his vocal range is a lot lower than what he is achieving. Also, there are hardly any backup vocals, which could have made it a little more bearable.

Musically, it is way too clean, but a few times, it's catchy. It's the standard pop-punk that is calling itself pop-punk nowadays, and at times can help drown out the vocals. But it seems like it is missing something that could make it 10 times better. The hooks at times can be infectious, but at other times get very redundant.

This CD is only for those people that enjoy that the ooeist of the gooiest of pop-punk like Fall Out Boy. That band was the one thing that popped into my head as soon as the first song started. For everyone else, steer clear. This is the kind of stuff that will find its way across MTV and soon be forgotten.

Wow what a horrible review.

"ooeist of the gooiest of pop-punk like Fall Out Boy."
haha wow. Have you listened to FOB recently? Or hell have you listened to FOB at all?

I agree that this is pretty typical as far as pop-punk goes. But lets face it all the songs are catchy, and as for the singing I think it is quite enjoyable. A pretty average album. but not horrible. Nevertheless it is a solid debut, and a good album.

alexiamaria (December 8, 2007)

Everyone knows William Beckett has an amazing voice,so honestly I don't see why you would even post this review, seeing as though nobody cares if you hate them.

JustAnEmoTrobbit (July 15, 2006)

i think that The Academy Is. is one of the best bands. and if you think William Becketts singing is bad then your just jealous. he has an amazing voice. The Academy Is. may fade out to some people but not to people who enjoy their music. and if thry do fade out to you, then your not a true fan.

thedarrien (July 1, 2006)

Although I do actually like The Academy Is, I do have to agree with everything that was said in this review. They are yet another one of those typical pop-punk bands who are oh-so-popular at the moment, but they are good if you're in a dancy, sing-your-heart-out mood.

CAMP TAI... IS THE BEST LIVEJOURNAL COMMUNITY FOR THE ACADEMY IS...!

The Academy Is... owns your soul. And you know it.
so stfu kthx.

Anonymous (February 17, 2006)

So, basically I'm pretty sure that everyone on this that doesn't like The Academy Is... is probably ugly. If you have to hate on a gorgeous talented young man, you are probably jealous that:

1. You don't have as much money as him at such a young age.
2. You don't have the smooth sensual voice like he does.
3. You wish your legs were thin enough to fit into pants like that.

You talk about "scene" this and "scene" that, but you are all HATERS. If you honestly think that anybody is reading your bull sh** and considering revising their opinion to fit yours you are either:

A. Wrong
or
B. Wrong

Thank you. Have a nice day.

the academy is..is pretty cool. i gotta admit, i do thnk they're kind of like fall out boy. thats what i thought when i heard them. but they have thier oun little thing going on. they're a good band.

Anonymous (February 7, 2006)

so this band is the greates i listen to them every day cuz there pretty hott...

Anonymous (January 24, 2006)

This band is not at all like fall out boy (who are posers). The academy is makes music that you can really listen to and understand unlike fall out boys lead singer.

Anonymous (January 21, 2006)

dude. the academy is... is one of the best bands out of chicago. william's voice is just right and the songs are very catchy. everyone seems to think these 'fueled by ramen' bands are following into fall out boy's steps by copying them, but they're not. pete wentz was the one who discovered the academy is and he was impressed with them, not because they're like his own band.

Anonymous (January 18, 2006)

so like ily the academy is...kay thanks bye
(ily=i love you) their my faviorte band....

This review makes me want to smaesh YOU into a thousand little pieces!!!

Anonymous (January 4, 2006)

I think that this reviewer is the worst ever! The Academy Is is a great name for a band! This album deserves AT LEAST 9 and a half stars. The album is fantabulous and you know it!!!! So I now HATE you! HA!

etwiels88 (November 5, 2005)

I don't think this album is worth 1.5 stars at all... TAI have a much more relaxed style than say Fall Out Boy. It's much more calm and less poppy than the aforementioned, which is a good thing I think. However, he big problem with the band is that they hold a lot of their energy back at times when it calls for an outbreak or something. They remind me of the really good local band from around your area.

Anonymous (November 3, 2005)

I love this CD. The songs are catchy and fans of fall out boy will love it :D

tristan (October 25, 2005)

Pretty average stuff; especially considering what's been going on in Chicago. That said, their next one could be a lot better.

pasha (October 24, 2005)

punk-pop is not my favourite genre, but this CD is great!

Ocram (October 11, 2005)

the academy is ... as catchy as crabs at your local walmart toliet seat i find my self singing there shit no matter where iam not only are they catchy theyre lyrics in MOST songs are amazing all though i do agree that "Attention" sucks ass

Angel-Jin (September 22, 2005)

I'll pick it up and listen to it every now and again. I can't help the catchiness of it, and it sticks, so yea, they win.

Anonymous (August 31, 2005)

for the band being so young, this cd is fantastic. it's undeniably catchy, with unique vocals for the genre. a definite must for fans of bands like fall out boy.

Anonymous (July 3, 2005)

i love this band.... every song on the cd is awesome... the lyrics... the music..... everything

whoever sits at their computer and dogs bands because they dont like that style or perticular band should seriously get fucked.... at least theyre out their on stage in front of a bunch of people they dont know trying.... which is probably more than most of u

Everytime I listen to this album i continue to be blown away by how great it is. the reviewer has no idea what hes talking about, and neith do any of you idiots who say shit like, "this band eats the shit out of my asshole"

grow the fuck up, loser.

soulbleed (April 26, 2005)

i bet pretty much everyone who bashed this record never listened to it. it's obvious the reviewer never did.

Anonymous (April 5, 2005)

I love the Academy Is...William has an amazing voice and their lyrics are actually pretty unique. So, let me ask all of you who don't like them...what's your favorite band? How do their lyrics go? Come on, you took out the most simple lyrics out of all their songs! You can make anyone look bad by taking words out of context, you dipshits. Goodness me. And William is the nicest person I have ever met. So, you know what? Like them if you don't like them, but don't bash them like that. Jeez.

Anonymous (April 5, 2005)

I think this album is amazing. The Academy Is has quickly become my favorite band.

Wililam's voice is so unique.

For being such a young band, they're incredible. I really like the lyrics, and the catchy points in the songs. The band could work a bit harder on making their songs catchy throughout, because that is the high point of their music.

For being 17-19 years old, I think they're incredble!

Anonymous (February 21, 2005)

John5MP (February 21, 2005)

These guys are ok; they're not something I'd listen to. Who's comparing a band like this to Pennywise though? I wouldn't even call this pop punk, it's just rock. That's not the reason I don't like it though, it's just mediocre.

Anonymous (February 20, 2005)

this is probably the stupidest shit to be released thus far in the year. a waste a waste a waste of time and plastique

Anonymous (February 20, 2005)

Marlon (February 20, 2005)

But I'm actually surprised these guys aren't signed to a major label because they look like they could be a huge cash crop since junior high school kids everywhere would be eating this shit up.

^They are. They got signed to Atlantic a bit ago, but this CD still came out on Fueld By Ramen.

Anonymous (February 20, 2005)

Fueled By Ramen is shitty now. Vinnie, stop signing flavour of the month bollocks like this and Fall Out Boy.

Joe

PS I don't mind Pennywise, but their last couple of albums suck.

Anonymous (February 20, 2005)

funny thing is, i agree with the last few posts, and i don't even like those bands. they do have originality though, so fuck bands like this.

-costanza

Anonymous (February 20, 2005)

I agree with China Town dude on that call. I am sick of this mind numbing mediocre crap. Lifetime, Jawbreaker, Avail...those bands are one of a kind shit pretty much, and all that really comes out these days is the same old shit. It is like horribly mediocre versions of the bands that paved the way for this shit. Just remember if there was no Lifetime there would be no pansycore or softcore if you will. Fucking Tacking Back Sunday licks Lifetime's and Jawbreaker's balls on a daily occasion for inspiration. Ok enough of this crazy rant. Peace.

Anonymous (February 19, 2005)

Are you fucking kidding me? Most of the loved & respected punk bands on this site receive that treatment specifically due to their originality. You can't tell me that there are other bands out there that sound like D4, the Larry Arms, Avail, Paint It Black, Lifetime, or Jawbreaker. Those bands are one-of-a-kinds, with distinguishable vocals and songwriting ability that eclipses pretty much anything labels like Fueled By Ramen and Vagrant put out.

I haven't even heard The Academy Is..., but I know they deserve a 1.

Anonymous (February 19, 2005)

"Rob, they're not only bashing it because it sucks, it's also unoriginal. "

Three quarters of the "punk" bands people here namedrop are unoriginal. They also suck. But since nobody under the age of 17 goes to these shows and their singer is dressed like a hobo instead of a girl they like them.

sickboi (February 19, 2005)

Since when is liking Lagwagon, Strung Out, LTJ, and Pennywise "name-dropping"?

Costanza (February 19, 2005)

yeah, i was gonna mention that. scores for swingline's line. Gold, solid Gold.

Anonymous (February 19, 2005)

"indie before a major is such a great gimmick. it's like juicing the coins out of the special question mark box as fast as you can in super mario bros."

Doesn't anybody else think that this is a great fucking analogy? Well done, swingline.

Costanza (February 19, 2005)

Rob, they're not only bashing it because it sucks, it's also unoriginal. I realize these guys are your friends because midtown and the acadamy is... have probably played together numerous times. But if you can sit there and claim that there's an ounce of originality and goodness to this, than you're a better (or worse) man than I. And I'm not looking for complete originality when I hear music. Hell I'm an alright fan of Brand New or TBS, but this shit just keeps getting recycled. So FUCK this band, and believe me, my reasons for hating this are way better than your reasons for not.

swingline (February 19, 2005)

first off, what do you think the comment section is for? do you really think the fruit cakes from the academy is... is going to come here with a pen and paper in hand ready to take notes? the comments section is and has been for anyone to speak what they think of the album. it may be hard for you to believe but a lot of people actually hate catchy pop music.

Anonymous (February 19, 2005)

I'll be honest, I dont know what everybody thinks, and in all honesty, i couldnt care the fuck less on what everybodys opinion on every issue is. The point that im getting at is everybody who holds the same anti-Academy, anti-emo opinion, has to justify thier beliefs by rapidly replying to a review of each said band. Bravo!!! We understand you do not like these bands, but the same constructive criticism repeated over and over in every single reply does nothing for your cause. I understand that chirping these bands can only help to pad your jock and make you feel more man than anything out there. I sincerely appologize for every punk/emo band that has the prefix pop infront of them. Im sorry they have infringed upon your scene, but seriously, you guys need to lay off on the replying en mass to chirp every band that has some sort of appeal to anything outside the testerone drenched 19-26 year old demographic. While your opinion is valued, the same one written over and over with the help of a thesauras doesn't add anything new to the conversation.

OH............ and in my most basic of research, from this very web site, Pennywise has recieved numerous 7 ratings... so apparently SOMEONE out there likes them other than me...

cheers,
rob
(aparently ive become everything i hate

swingline (February 19, 2005)

rob... no body likes pennywise. savage garden had a catchy song so what are you trying to tell me? also, where do you retards come from and why do you assume you know what everyone thinks?

swingline (February 19, 2005)

hey quitmyscene... shut up http://www.quitmyscene.com/reviews/simpleplan_snga.php

kenjamin (February 19, 2005)

okay.... so go listen to the record and enjoy it. What's stopping you? But just to make a point, there are people who listen to stuff like Venetian Snares and enjoy it. Catchy does not always equal good.

Anonymous (February 19, 2005)

QUICK!!! Everybody rush to their keyboards and point out how scene they are by chirping the lastest album to have any sort of resembelance to Taking Back Sunday or the emo trend in general. The truth is, people do have tastes that have changed since 1998, and Lagwagon and Alk3 aren't the only bands in existance anymore, so some people (heaven forbid) may enjoys this music.

Oh and I realize you are going to be quick to jump on this with your standard "the only people who like this shit are 14 year-old girls and Good Charlotte fans" comment, because no matter how many times you say that, in your opinion it never loses its witty edge. But in all honesty, some people dont feel compelled to justify how punk they are by trashing every album that is not to thier liking.

This album is catchy, therefore a good album... get over it, so are albums by Lagwagon, Strung Out, LTJ, and every other band you can name drop to make yourself feel to be among punks elite. If it weren't for albums being catchy, people wouldnt give them a second listen, because you dont listen to something you dont want to.

But next time you go to a Pennywise show, and the Academy is..is opening for them, feel proud that you are standing in the back with your ars crossed chirping the kids under the age of 17 there... cause wow, youre soooooooo punk.

cheers,
rob

"24 Hour revenge thererapy" and "Dear you" are definitely pop punk and don't call those records emo because they have nothing in common with the likes of Hoover, Rites of Spring, and DLJ. and by this logic, two band ripping off jawbreaker; alk3 and the lawrence arms, are also pop punk. Never heard this brandston band though.

Throw the descendents on that list too of good pop punk bands.
