How much credence can you give to a person who writes a review on a band in a genre which he admits he doesnt like?

I hate country music. Put a Garth Brooks record in my hand and ask me to write a review, and it would probably not be too favorable either.

The difference is, as a writer I would attempt to give the reader a clear picture of the music whether I liked it or not. It's too easy to bash something. It takes more intelligence and writing skills to be able to review something out of your comfortable element.

You should have started off the review by stating that this is not a genre of music you like, then proceed to review the record given that circumstance. A good writer will allow the reader to determine for themselves if this is a record they want to hear. Describe the record. Who they sound like? The mix?

You're comments on the cover of the CD, as well as the lyrical content (OTT are hardly the first band to write out of sadness. Name me some bands that have only positive lyrics?) are amateurish at best.

Brooding and dark? Did you listen to "Who's Amazing" or "In a Whisper"? Obviously not. And where do you hear any screamo? Did you even play the CD?

This band is indie pop/ pop punk/ emo, and deserves to be compared to other like bands. You sound more like one of those FATA fans who thought that the female vocals on their CD's ruined the machismo appeal.

Reviews are taken with a grain of salt. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But there are ways to go about it, without making yourself look the fool.

This stuff isn't that bad...& yes, she has a nice voice. Typical indie-cum-scenester female vocals, it seems, but still nice to listen to.

She was in an old LI band called Scarab, they had this 1 song that ruled the school.

i really enjoy melanie's voice....more so on "short stories with tragic endings" than on anything she's done with her band, but still...
