In the mid-nineties, when punk was making a comeback, only two bands really did it right, and Dead Fucking Last (D.F.L.) was one of them. They had it all: the abrasive name, the attitude, the short and fast songs, and lyrics that were direct and to the point.

Proud to Be is 19 songs in roughly 22 minutes, plus a slower more "experimental" 7-minute song at the end. This album was produced Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys (he also played bass on D.F.L.'s first album), and some of the songs are very reminiscent of the very, very early Beastie punk songs. For the most part, they are simple songs with catchy lyrics that beg to be played louder and louder. The guitars are distorted, the bass is powerful, the drums hit hard and fast, and the vocals are loud and barked (but still audible). Some of the standout tracks are "Proud to be DFL," "Lost Cause," "Mr. Popular," and "Iome is Where The Heart Is."

Dead Fucking Last is punk. I think all of the D.F.L. CDs may be out of print, so if you see this or their other two albums (My Crazy Life and Grateful) used, pick 'em up. It will be the best purchase you've made all year.

P.S. The other band that did punk right in the nineties was F.Y.P.

    I'm a knucklehead for life!
Best Punk band ever! All others are poseurs.
I stoped listening to punk when DFL broke up.
They still owe me $5 for the ticket I bought to their show at the Barn and we found out they broke up when we showed up.

    Punk died with DFL

Hey ken, what part of "in my opinion" didn't you see?????? you're a dick.

    Anonymous (March 22, 2005)

    Gorilla Biscuits were late 80's.
Bands like Spazz, Infest, Capitalist Casualties etc are more Thrash (well, Nu Thrash) bands.
That DFL 7" is straight up Hardcore Punk.
What the fuck happened to Hardcore? At least Creep Division and The Criminals (RIP) give/gave some hope.

    KEEP BREAKDOWNS OUT OF HARDCORE

"This DFL album is good, but the DFL 7" in my opinion is the best hardcore 7" of the nineties. "

THAT is a pretty big statement. That pretty much negates such bands as Spazz, Los Crudos, Nine Shocks Terror, No Comment, Infest, Gorilla Biscuits, CHarles Bronson, Capitalist Casualties and about a billion others. DFL is good, but no where close to any of the above mentioned bands.

    1995 called...it wants it's review back.

    Anonymous (March 21, 2005)

Yeah, you can get it from Interpunk or Amazon.
There's even a cover of Social D's "Playpen" on it.

i am almost positive that Family Dog is broken up as well.
i dont think you can get their album anywhere either, because they were on the voodoo glow skulls label, el pocho loco records or something, and i dont think that label exists either

That guy that said the Beasties old punk stuff is crap is wrong.
Even their old stuff was good. It ain't no Aglio E Olio but it was good.

This DFL album is good, but the DFL 7" in my opinion is the best hardcore 7" of the nineties.
After Adam left they got sloppy.
It's a shame they broke up, but check out the band THE FAMILY DOG with ex members of DFL, album "So Cal Hardcore", unfortunately I think they broke up too.

Finally we are seeing some good cd reviews on here!

Everyone gives jones alot of shit, but the fact that he digs this album pretty much shows that he has taste!

"Also Epitaph clearly doesn't hasn't known their heads from their asses for a while; between not keeping this in print and dropping Union 13 they were doing poorly enough before they started signing mall screamo bands."

Not to mention failing to keep Poison Idea's "Feel The Darkness" LP when Epitaph surely had the means to do so. But Actually, it is now been re-released by Havoc on Vinyl, allowing me to gladly give my money to a sincere label like Havoc...instead of epitaph.

ok. maybe the "only two band" comment was a little harsh...but i seriously stick by it. there were alot of decent and very good punk bands...but i think only dfl and fyp had everything right. not to say other bands were shit compared to these two (even though alot were), but as far as straight up diy punk goes...these guys did it the best

This band are pretty cool, I heard that Sublime were really big fans of them, but it doesn't really show in their music.

What I've heard from this band has been solid and fun, I'm pretty sure I'd like this whole album. Also, decent review although there are obviously other good 90s punk bands.

    Anonymous (March 19, 2005)

    This album needs Pizza Man.

    He delivers.

    i dont get it

"This album was produced Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys (he also played bass on D.F.L.'s first album), and some of the songs are very reminiscent of the very, very early Beastie punk songs."

i think it sounds more like "aglio e olio", the beasties' 1995 ep of hardcore songs, but that's just my opinion.

    Anonymous (March 18, 2005)

believe it or not I was actually listening to DFL on the way to work today. It had been a while since I had last given the disc a spin. The albums fun but the production sucks ass.

    manifesto (March 18, 2005)

Amazing record. Bad review. So, score is for the record.

    Anonymous (March 18, 2005)

who was the other band that did it right?

"This album was produced Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys (he also played bass on D.F.L.'s first album), and some of the songs are very reminiscent of the very, very early Beastie punk songs."

Except that the Beastie Boys were a fucking terrible hardcore band. I own everything the band has ever done but the punk shit is horrible. This isn't a very winning endorsement

But that comment about mid-nineties punk was harsh and without base.
