Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)

This split has been known about for quite some time now. It's finally come out and it's just like I expected it to be. It's not anything close to a classic, but a completely solid release, on behalf of both bands. Each band does four songs: Against All Authority on the first half, and Common Rider closing the record. Tracks 5-8 are the last songs Common Rider will ever release, so one can't help but be the slightest bit warm to the material, but let's not let that become a bias to the way this review plays out!

Against All Authority's half of the split is really good. The songs are no change of pace to what they've been doing since the beginning: fast street/skate punk, ska, and a mouthful of politics and opinions in every beat and fist pump! There's hardly any trumpet to speak of. Personally, I don't mind that one bit, and critically it's not a bad thing either (though it's just as much not a good thing I suppose). Whatever floats your boat, I guess. If you've liked AAA in the past, you'll like the shit they've put down for this record. They aren't reinventing the wheel, but for some that's the beauty of it. They keep it simple, punk, and pissed off.

Common Rider's half is almost as good...but not quite, considering the last four songs on this split are outtakes from the This Is Unity Music sessions (not that I'm ripping on This Is Unity Music, rather the fact that the songs are outtakes). Though, don't let that fact mislead you. It's Common Rider all the way on each of the four tracks. It's more rocksteady like This Is Unity Music, as opposed to the more ska grooves of Last Wave Rockers. The track "Dogtown" sounds like it could have been an LWR leftover, though (my personal favourite of the Common Rider songs here). All the songs on the second half of this split are solid. Nothing sounds out of place or inconsistent with each other.

All in all it's a good mix of punk and ska, be it a clenched fist in the air or the sudden urge to get those dancing shoes on and go out on the skanking floor; this split will do you good and is recommended for fans of either band. On one last note, I got it for $9.99 brand new at my local indie record shop, so that's a pretty rad price, hey? If you've got some spare cash, pick this up now. It's fucking good.

    2 great bands on one album!! its a good buy!

    Doing justice and tying together musical history are two different things. Just because a comparison is made doesn't logically imply that the reviewer expects the latter product to be in conformity with the earlier band - it's merely putting things into context.

    That Benjaguy is a moron too. Just shut up kids

    was the falling sickness tape one of their records? i think that'd be rad to have

    My Score:

    I mentioned Plan-It-X because of the fact that the reviewer was drooling over the fact that the cd was 10 bucks. I was simply stating that there is a lot of DIY punk with a lot more heart and passion and quality than this that you can get for cheaper. Namedropping? Hardly. I think I could do better than Against Me! if I wanted to namedrop. How is mentioning P-I-X "cool" or "trendy" when there are hardly enough people who have even heard of them to make up a "trend"? Lick my balls. Ghost Mice and TDIE are amazing.

    i worked a small indie store in upstate ny, and i have to agree. they mark up their records like crazy because they've got to compete with asshole chains like best buy that sell $1,000 appliances with tv's in them (who needs a fridge with a fucking tv in it anyway?) and can get away with selling cd's for $6.99. mom and pop record stores are getting killed by the big electronics chains. it's a shame if you ask me. i'm a poor student too, and i have little money as it is, but i'll spend at the indie store. even when it's 2 bucks more..but that's just me.

    Now that Common rider is done, what is Jesse doing now anyway? I hope not another 10 year hiatus.

    Posted by muskawo_ on 2005-04-25 19:56:57

    I'm gonna get this cause I love common rider (finally got a copy of this is unity music on the weekend at a record swap meet for $15 AU).

    People, stop comparing what jesse is doing now compared to op ivy days, and start comparing what "lint" is doing now to what jesse is doing now. Pop cd and friendships with GC on a major label VS. Ska/punk/whatever awesomeness. I know which I prefer.

    Plus Mitch Clem likes common rider :)

    "Why don't you just fucking use mail-order? It takes no time at all, and none of you money goes to the store (regardless of if it's a mom-and-pop; fuck them, they overprice their stuff)."

    yeah, the indie store's are always ripping you off. you do realize that the majority of privately owned record stores make like 50 cents to a dollar a record?

    Posted by sickboi on 2005-04-25 15:08:31

    Hopeless sent me a free Falling Sickness TAPE with this. Hahahaha, I don't even own a tape deck.

    Posted by notfeelingcreative on 2005-04-25 10:50:10

    Duh, you're right. I should just order it from hopeless, I've ordered directly from them in the past, and have had nothing but good experiences, they always sent free stickers, samplers and shit with my orders! When I found an indie store, within driving distance, I stopped fucking with mail order, not really sure why, just the 15 minute drive vs. the three week wait, I suppose.

    "What? Are your legs broken too?"

    Nah, but I only buy music at Park Ave Cds. The only thing around here is a shopping mall, even if I shopped there, they don't carry decent stuff, you're lucky to even find bad religion there.

    unity music was the only cd i bought from common rider and i dug it. i haven't heard against all authority since 24 hour road resistance or whatever that cd was called and i don't recall that these two bands would mesh together very well considering one is like raggapunk and the other is ska-somethingorother. but i'll check this out anyway.

    I know what you mean about Unity Music and LWR. I looove LWR and still listen to it a lot, but UM just doesn't seem to grab me. When I do listen to it, I really enjoy it, but there's something missing that doesn't stick.

    Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 23, 2005 at 3:48 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

    As a very downbeat person, I'm suprised how much I still love last wave rockers. Just puts a smile on my face.

    This is unity music was the polar opposite, I just couldn't sync up with it. The other 7 inches and odds and ends they did I loved, but that 2nd LP just never did anything for me.

    That being said, these common rider songs being outtakes from that album is peculiar, since i really dig these four songs.

    AAA is AAA. Good band, but I listen to the CR side more, going to miss their records.

    I picked it up tonight at tower for $8.99

    I actually really like this more than I thought I would. I havent been into AAA for a few years now, not as much as I used to be anyway. Their songs are really strong, 3 straight forward nasty punk rock songs that they are known for. The 4th song is reggae/ska with some nice trumpet work by Alan.

    I was never too familiar with Common Rider but am digging their tracks as well. The first song is rocksteady with a rock N roll twist. The next two remind me of new Madcap punk and rock style. Haha and the last song reminds me of something Beck would do, and I mean that in the best way possible.

    Pick it up

    I do agree that splits should be done on vinyl. That didn't stop me from ordering this. It hasn't come yet, but I downloaded it and definitely like it. Didn't want to listen to it too much until I get the real thing in my hands.

    Posted by crossfiyaaa on 2005-04-22 19:54:13

    I'm kind of surprised, as a huge plan-it-xer, at Benjasaurus. I didn't really think it lined up with the mentality of most of us to name-drop said label's bands when it holds no relevance at all. I thought most kids into plan-it-x rejected doing something "cool" or "trendy" just for the sake of being cool or trendy. But then again, I guess we aren't all the same.

    I mean, we're talking about ska. Why name-drop some punk bands? If people are interested in this split, they're probably looking for some ska. (Plus, Ghost Mice and Devil is Electric are pretty mediocre.)

    AAA is the sex. I imagine this split is really good, though I can't say I've heard it yet.

    Benajasaurus = lame

    Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 22, 2005 at 5:49 PM (EDT)

    When I'm pissed off me and my friends put on "All Fall Down" and play Ring Around The Roses. It's fun.

    My Score:

    Benjasaurus = Lame
    AAA = No more ska
    Common Rider = Never was ska
    This split = Solid (perfect word for it)
    Paying 10$ for it? = Hahaha rediculous
    Benjasaurus = Lame
    The Vinyl/"oldskool" guy = Hahaha, lame.

    The less frequently I hear AAA the more I like them. Too whiney to listen to constantly but done in good doses here.

    My Score:

    Wow, such a mixed reaction to this split.
    Personally I thought the AAA songs were the weaker ones and the Common Rider half was pure gold.

    Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 22, 2005 at 1:32 PM (EDT)
    My Score:

    The AAA songs are fucking incredible, and forgiveable for a five-year absence of material.

    The Common Rider songs are so god-awful, they make this CD get a one.

    Go AAA.

    I just meant to the guy that said that Operation Ivy was better than Common Rider. I didn't mean not to mention that they were related in some way. I'm just sick of people saying "OpIvy was so much better, Jesse Micheals should get back with that". I understand using it to illustrate a point, but not to fault a band for not being what a members' former band was. The Lawrence Arms aren't The Broadways. Dashboard Confessional isn't Further Seems Forever. Slowreader isn't The Impossibles. The Street Dogs aren't The Dropkick Murphys. People change, bands change. Compare them to show differences and similarities, but please stop saying that "so and so was better, so this newer band should break up".

    Not that anyone actually said that. I just hear that too much in reference to Common Rider in particular.

    This guy was dead on, it was pretty good but nothing that amazed or floored me, but I dig it. People need to stop comparing common rider to operation ivy though, not only is it a different band, it's 15 years later! But yeah I enjoyed this, especially the aaa songs.

    Ok, stop with the OpIvy comparisons. It does neither band justice. Common Rider is incredible for what they play. And so is OpIvy. I personally wasn't listening to Operation Ivy when they were still together and only got into them after Rancid, but I listened to Common Rider from the day Last Wave Rockers came out. I love each band for what they do. I mean do people beat up on Brendan for The Lawrence Arms vs. The Broadways ? James for Reggie vs. The Get Up Kids ? Paul Westerburg for The Replacements ?
