On The Possibility And The Promise, Amber Pacific have partially shedded most of their emotional pop-punk skin in favor of a more streamlined rock approach, and as a result, their debut full-length for Hopeless is a bit less derivative than their Fading Days EP, but the band is still essentially drowning in their suffocating pool of sound-alikes. While the record cleans up a lot of the band's previously horrific problems, like their laughably clichéd lyrical climaxes and overtly poppy arrangements, it only makes for a marginally competent, punk-pop record capable of little more than numbing background music like fellow token entries Don't Look Down and Matchbook Romance (without the pointless screaming, of course) or a third-rate major label-era Autopilot Off.

The opener, "Everything We Were Has Become What We Are," is by far the standout. Thanks to this misleading track (especially with its notably solid guitar lead) Amber Pacific will have you thinking you're about to experience twelve tracks of soaring, fair-to-decent double-time punk-influenced rock that's surprisingly heavy and an overall huge improvement, even if the string section in the bridge is a bit unnecessary. Unfortunately, for the rest of the album, the band falls back on a lyrically angsty punk-pop sound that's as "nice" as it is ineffectual. That is to say, the band has a well-produced, fine-tuned and precise style that isn't terribly executed - its hooks just fall flat on their respective faces, and it results in a rather forgettable record. Promisingly, "Postcards" comes running out of the gates with fast-paced drum-work á la Slick Shoes, and sprinkles more throughout the song, but even then, the song's invigorating moments are few and far between.

Amber Pacific are finally showing promise, but it's in select spots on their debut full-length. Their sound would do devastatingly well to expand on these hints of aggression and ambition (as well as undergo a healthy period of maturation), because the base AP relies on is isn't catchy or original enough, and ultimately too boring to survive on its own.

    My Score:

I think this album has shown that this band does has promise in the future. The album itself has some great riffs, some decent lyrics, good singing but you can see that the they still need to expand their horizons and use some more creativity but other than that, I still think the album is pretty badass for what it is.

Angela is matched by Some Amber Pacific Songs. Also i would like to state that Emo isnt that bad...atleast it wasnt. Its too over populated now but i remember when Emo bands were original. and there are still some bands out there doing Original sounds in the Emo genre. just pointing that out.As for AP meh it COULD be good...needs a bit more pratice

Chinatown, NUFAN is one of my favorite bands. I'm a regular on their message board, I was at the show when they recorded their live cd.

But I stand by my earlier statement that this new Amber Pacific cd will be liked by fans of newer NUFAN stuff, meaning "Hard Rock Bottom." Some of the new Amber Pacific songs are just as fast as "Angela".

chinatown, i love NUFAN too, but dude, hard rock bottom is no where near as 'punk' as the last 2 bad religeon records. half the songs on hard rock are love songs, and 'dumb reminders' is totally cheesey pop punk. i mean i love it, cuz i love pop punk and skate punk , but dude...you're exaggerating a bit there.

    paul

NUFAN and BR's last 2 albums were both respectively their best 2 albums, crazy. and yes, i do own suffer and leche con carne.

Do give me some insight as to why they suck. I want three good reasons.

P.S. Your spelling is terrible. I doubt that you're older than 14.

I've heard the first eight songs so far and I think it's great. I can't believe that guy compared them to Don't look Down, they're much better than those guys. If you like Allister or NUFAN's newer stuff you will like this.

You're an idiot who obviously hasn't heard Hard Rock Bottom in its entirety. "Undefeated," "Angela," and "Any Number Can Play" are faster and harder than anything in Amber Pacific's repertoire. In fact, that record is just as punk as the last two albums by Pulley, Avail, NoFX, and Bad Religion.

snooooooooooooooore. That video that got posted didn't help me like them either. I'll give them one star for the Hawthorne Heights reason.

Where did these guys get their name from?

"the only thing keeping albums like this above a 1 star is the fact that somewhere in the world, each member of hawthorne heights is still breathing."

couldn't have said that any better. hahahahah fucking hilarious.

    this band COULD be good.

but their lyrics are junior high, and their songs predictable

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at 10:18 AM (EDT)

I bet AP gives this a 5 out of 5 if they already haven't.
