SET FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bright Eyes frontman announces release of secretly recorded album

Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst has announced the immediate release of We Can Breathe Under Alcohol, an album secretly recorded around the time of I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Digital Ash In A Digital Urn.

"I felt like with Morning I was a bit more folky than usual, and with Digital, well, obviously...so around the same time I ended up recording Alcohol, which are more of my basic takes," the Omaha native muttered in between swigs from a pocket flask. "I felt like releasing three albums on one day was a bit excessive, so I kept this one under wraps for a while and figured I'd put it out later on in the year." The captivating, epic, swirling, magnificent full-length will set a new standard for indie rock and has already been hailed by Rolling Stone and Spin as "Oberst fully settling into his niche like Grade F meat into a Taco Bell flour tortilla" and "the new envy of every breathing singer/songwriter worldwide," respectively.

"I don't know. It just sounds like a Bright Eyes album to me, I guess," said Oberst when asked of the record. Oberst's modesty is a mere testament to his astounding ability to write amazing personal narratives of lost loves and loves that never were, fully entrancing and captivating the listener for every passing second with his gentle acoustic strokes and emotional twang, and this isn't to mention inciting the angst of both the left and right wings with tracks like the modestly horn-laden, strangely upbeat "Change The World," a scathing attack on the media, political-minded affiliations, AND his own surroundings with such lines as "No more FCC, or NBC, or CBS, or ABC, and no more NRA, or the CIA, or the fast food nation, or gas price inflations, no more indie scene, no more indie scene." Again, however, Oberst downplays the song by responding, "Yeah, that was sort of just another take on 'Let's Not Shit Ourselves.' I even recycle a few media channel mentions from that song, like ABC, NBC, and CBS. I guess I was just feeling lazy." "Recycled," however, is not a word that fits well in the same breath as Alcohol.

Good Life frontman Tim Kasher even guests on a few tracks to help with the vibe of Alcohol. "He'd been wanting to collaborate for a while, so I figured what the hell," mentions Oberst. Kasher brings his moody, indie/acoustic take from last year's Album Of The Year to many, fully audible tracks on the album, like "True Love" and "Born In A Bottle." However, it's like Kasher isn't even there, a ghost in the background simply spreading the Saddle Creek sound further through the album.

Oberst has even announced plans to release it on, of all labels, former MCA/Geffen-distributed Drive-Thru Records. "I didn't want to hit Saddle Creek too hard financially with all these album releases, so it was easier for me to just do it in conjunction with someone else. Drive-Thru has put out some of my favorit-...some of my more recent...er, I'm good friends with one of their band's guitar techs, so it was a no-brainer."

Like his past classics, influences on the record include Bob Dylan and James Taylor. "Well, like I said. It's a Bright Eyes album. What the hell more do you want?" Oberst growls as he spits high-proof liquor in this adamant press release combatant's face, which brings it to another point: The obvious effect of alcohol on the record. "You wanna make something of it?" asks Oberst. Impossible, when the man has already made something: An American classic of an album, and proved himself as someone who's already let a moderated amount of the album title subject pour into his heart and soul, and thus give an honest reflection of a battled and bruised folk hero in We Can Breathe Under Alcohol.

I remember like a year ago there was an article about this guy in AP. One of the funniest things I have ever read.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at 2:55 PM (EDT)

listen to this album before you write about it. granted, "...and take it with a grain of salt" sounded similar to bright eyes but "we can breathe under alcohol" sounds nothing like an angle's earlier releases, nor anything bright eyes had ever put out. ever better yet, give the new ep "5 days 5 songs" a listen. you'll be even more surprised.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at 1:38 AM (EDT)

    are you retarded?
conor obserst has nothing to so with "we can breathe under alcohol"
"we can breathe under alcohol" was released by "an angle" from sacremento cali.

    retard.

This music sucks and this review is entirely accurate. If the reviewer didnt listen to the album, good for him cause its a waste of fucking time. The live show is even worse, sacramento has to put up with this garbage on a regular basis.

I really do hope that the guy from this band reads how much we all think we sucks his own ass...cause this is some real tripe...no shit!

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 27, 2005 at 6:32 PM (EDT)

I never comment on these but I have to express how much this record totally sucks! It's also funny seeing the band members and 15 year old NFG fans sticking up for the record which makes it only look more pathetic, and what's up with this guy's drunk schtick? Lame! NEXT!

this "band" or this Kris Anaya guy are from Sacramento CA and this should be avoided at all costs!!!! I live in this city and I must say it is painful to be here with shit like this being shoved down the local show-goer's throat. It's really stale sounding, contrived and unoriginal. The lyrics are horible, the musical arrangements are dull and all the orchestral arrangement in the world couldn't save An Angle from sucking so damn hard. I gave ita shot, I really did and I even went to a show of theirs.

    Dear An Angle,

    I want my money back!
oh and the main dude in the band was a total pretentious ass monger.

I hate it how this album is compared to bright eyes. No similarity whatsoever. The last bright eyes album Digital Urn in a Digital Ash was crap anyways.

This album on the other hand is quite promising. Im really digging the first track off this album. *thumbs up*

This was a fabulous review. It was hilarious. That guy from An Angle is so blatantly ripping off Bright Eyes that he can't even hide it. He claims to hate Bright Eyes, but he steals Conor's lyrics and completely imitates his sounds. I mean, come on, it's one thing to have influences, but when you completely COPY your influences' sound, it won't get you respect from anyone.

I think An Angle fucking rocks this album out. sounds like bright eyes?! who cares if it does or not.. how many other bands out there sound like NFG, Senses Fail, and a million other bands.. give the guy credit.. hes been around for a little while recording and playing shows..seriously.. hes trying to makke it in the music scene.. he wants fans.. and if you dont like him dont say that about the whole bright eyes stuff!

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 4, 2005 at 11:14 AM (EDT)

thats a great review. I honestly love bright eyes. The song writer in this band seems to have only listened to bright eyes and nothing else, but in all that time he spent listening to bright eyes he never grasped the actual meanings behind any of the songs (thinks he does). I really wouldn't mind this band with the sounding like bright eyes part if 1.) the songwriter had one original thought (take the basic meaning behind a BE song then get rid of any literary wit) 2.) didnt steal the exact instumentals and melodies from BE.

I was looking at that and decided to look at emotionalpunk, and lookie lookie what I found in one of their reviews:

    Christ almighty...

It's hard to take the album seriously after hearing the first song and realizing this isn't Bright Eyes. It's way too similar even to be given a fair chance.

anyone's argument for an angle is totally lame.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, May 29, 2005 at 1:33 PM (EDT)

kudos to brian. the review was humorous..... until people took it to the extreme, that is. holy angle bashing batman. bright eyes is one band. an angle is another. sorry you missed the memo. both are extremely talented and should be commended for their abilities. i highly doubt an angle thought to themselves, "conor oberst is so hot right now. let's make an entire album that sounds like bright eyes and see if we can be as successful as him."

drive-thru is a reputable label. they just wouldn't let something like that happen.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, May 29, 2005 at 1:26 PM (EDT)

it's sad how some people are so quick to jump on an angle's case... i'm sure half of the people here have listened to what, one song in total? i won't deny that there are similarities with bright eyes, but in no way was this some sort of gimmick to boost sales. a voice is a voice. it's not something you can just change. deal with it, people.

    Posted by psychoos231 on 2005-05-29 00:18:11

This shit AND Bright Eyes are fucking lame..such terrible music

Posted by vocalyouth on 2005-05-28 23:02:16

Yes, other people sound like conor's voice, one that comes to mind is Kevin Devine. However. Kevin Devine doesn't cut and paste together parts of random bright eyes songs and lyrics in attempts to pass it off as original material. Actually, Kevin Devine kicks ass, so does Miracle of 86. Yep. This band still eats shit, though. Drive Thru deserves no respect.

I think "nfgpunker" deserves some credit, not only for pretty clearly inventing a bunch of other screen names and then posting under them, but for what is also clearly brilliant satire. No one in their right mind could be that excited about this band.

    comments on other comments here:

of course bright eyes has his influences. no band exists in a vaccuum. but he doesnt sound EXACTLY THE SAME as dylan or leonard cohen. its pretty unanimous that an angle sounds EXACTLY like bright eyes. i find it hard to believe that this dude just happened to develop his own songwriting style that resembles an already popular one so much.

ripping on bright eyes for being "depressing" all the time stopped being valid about 2 years ago. neither of his new records are like that, hell, even "lifted" wasnt really like that. its one of those things people say to make fun of a band before actually listening to what they're doing lately.

drive thru might be the worst thing to happen to music

This album kicks ass, maybe not all the way, but it still kicks some ass. It might be a little the same sound as Bright Eyes, but you cannot compare every band with another. You have to look at each band and notice their goods and bads. An Angle has lots of goods and any musician or critic of music should realize the talent that is coming from this album and realize that maybe he is not ripping off Bright Eyes but is creating music that he likes and hopes others will like.

I like how every time people start making fun of An Angle, one person from the band or a girlfriend or something pops up and acts completely amazed that anyone would even compare them to Bright Eyes.

    This shit sucks.

Someone needs to tell An Angle they're not from Omaha.

Posted by Kenjamin on 2005-05-27 17:30:46

Bright Eyes' older stuff sounds too much like Davide Dondero. Also, he's only sold 200,000 records!?!?! So many bands would make a deal with satan to have record sales like that !!! Idiot.

    My Score:

this band eats shit. i have listened to them, and sometimes still head over to the purevolume page and wonder how something so blatently unoriginal can be released, and that the band and label seem to have no problem with it. i really, really don't understand. the cover of the last album even ripped off 'fevers and mirrors' for crying out loud. hopefully no one is buying into this shit, i have no idea how many records an angle has sold, but hopefully its 0 or the ones that have been sold were bought for comedy purposes or something. and if that dude below is from the band, he forgot the line "i don't read the reviews, i do not play for you"

Drive-Thru has put out some of my favorit-...some of my more recent...er, I'm good friends with one of their band's guitar techs, so it was a no-brainer."

    Favorite line btw.

By the way, let's go over all of the bands on your site and I can find out the 10 bands they ripped off as well.?

This is Punknews.org and the website covers just about everything, go read the FAQ. Just because other bands sound like so-and-so does not mean it will not be covered. An Angle, has the top review on the list and it was a negative review. The website is fair and the critic has the right to express his/her own review.

It's an opinion, you don't have to like it and no one has to agree with it but the writer himself.

Oberst fully settling into his niche like Grade F meat into a Taco Bell flour tortilla

That was comedy gold right there.

Back to listening to the new Darkest Hour.

One of the best reviews I have ever read. Anyone who doesnt think this is ripoff shit is in some sort of complex denial. I dont even know how An Angle or Drive Thru believe that they can get away with this kind of plagiarism.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 27, 2005 at 2:37 PM (EDT)

How is the ATDI collection? Anyone? I never liked them enough to pick up their individual albums, but a greatest hits comp is intriguing.

    My Score:

it's funny when bands read their reviews and get pissed off. I rest my case with the comment below.

    My Score:

Your review is as original as making Bright Eyes jokes. Ever realize Conor rips off 10 other bands? Yes, he is a fucking genius, but I want you to come up with one of the so called "bright eyes ripoffs" that write songs as great as An Angle. By the way, let's go over all of the bands on your site and I can find out the 10 bands they ripped off as well. Ever notice that Alkaline Trio sound just like the smoking popes? How about Taking Back Sunday sound like The Stryder? What about every band on Fat who sounds like each other. What about the entire hardcore scene? You can cut all of that into one giant breakdown of shit. Oh wait, I found a new way to play "chug-chug-chug" and a new metal riff! Screamo? come on! The biggest gimmick on the planet.

An Angle has songwriting skills. You can't deny it. Yes, there are definitely Bright Eyes comparisons, but thre are also obvious infulences of the Cure, Bob Dylan, Violent Femmes, and other bands. He can't change his voice, and he will always sound like Conor. Too bad.

The fucking sheep who post comments on the board without even hearing the CD is another big joke. If you are that fucking much of a follower, you should jump off a cliff with the other lemmings. Get an opinion of your own, rather than following some asshole's opinion on a website. How embarrassing.

Bright Eyes only sold 200,000 CDs so I don't think that is the kind of huge success anyone is trying to jump on.

One last thing, it is so easy to rip on bands. How about using some skill writing your reviews?

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 27, 2005 at 1:41 PM (EDT)

That's the best review I've ever read on this site. Cracked me up. Then again, we are living in a world without the third season of Chapelle's Show, so my humor level may be distorted.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 27, 2005 at 1:36 PM (EDT)

I kind of surprised nobody reviewed the At The Drive In or Troubled Hubble cd.

Bright Eyes was on Austin City Limits the other night, it was actually really good.

Bright eyes is a dysfunctional little twat, why would anyone want to sound or be like him? ..............On the other hand he could probabaly get laid with different teenager every night if he wanted to.... then again they might break his heart and we will have to listen to more of his shit for years to come.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 27, 2005 at 9:10 AM (EDT)

This band is way better than Bright Eyes. People, I know it's fun to say the same thing over and over ("This band is ripping off Bright Eyes!"), but at this point it's unnecessary and totally uninteresting. Please find a new criticism, or a new joke, or whatever.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 27, 2005 at 9:07 AM (EDT)

all i've ever heard from or about this band is that its a complete bright eyes rip off.

this guy is such a fag

being proud of being a loser who gets depressed and gets drunk is pretty damn pathetic

That Drive-Thru rip is classic. But yeah, there are far too many Bright Eyes-alikes around, when one of them more than suffices.

OT- what should I do for my next review? a newer band's latest ("French Toast", "Supersystem") or a classic ("The Gun Club- Las Vegas Story", "The Swans- Filth")?

firstlythe review is a joke. second, desa. broke up becuase the bassist fucked one too many 12 year olds.

Posted by bloodbrothersburnpiano on 2005-05-27 03:31:24

if this really were a bright eyes album, it would bve by far the worst he has ever released. the fact that somebody would even put out something that sound this much like something else is just disgraceful.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 27, 2005 at 2:39 AM (EDT)

yeah my friend dug up this band last year. fucking disgraceful.

obviously with the success of bright eyes we're going to have a lot of xerox bands, but this is just too much, right down to the old cd art/old website, a direct rip off.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 27, 2005 at 2:17 AM (EDT)

he probably should have mentioned his sarcasm for all the fucktards who took it seriously.
bright eyes would never record something that sucks as much as 75% of this album.
    score is for the review.

what the fuck is wrong with oberst!? no time for a new desaparecidos record and then out of nowhere he comes out with this.

It's a sarcastic commentary swingline. Brian is mocking Drive Thru and An Angel by trying to make money of of Conor Oberst and Tim Kasher.
