Reviews

As I Lay Dying's Shadows Are Security is one of the largest metalcore releases as of late, with a lot of hype from a lot of people. The question with hype is, "Do they deserve it?" As I Lay Dying deserves some of this hype, but otherwise, is a little overrated in the end.

"Meaning In Tragedy" is another one of those metalcore songs with some Swedish death metal riffs to start it out, and while these riffs are all over, "Meaning In Tragedy" uses them perhaps the best. The song starts off with a nice introduction riff, but the entire song can't keep up with this pace, as most of the album fails to do as well. "Confined" is a rather boring song until the clean vocals kick in, which I really like, but overall, "Confined" is a rather medicore song. Though on tracks like "Confined," there is a nice contrast of clean/shouted vocals.

"Losing Sights" starts with some more Swedish death metal riffs with some rather nice drums and vocals and carries well until As I Lay Dying's biggest problem occurs. Most of the song's parts between the intros, clean vocals, breakdowns, and Swedish death metal riffs are boring generic metalcore, wih monotonous shouting. But once the songs gets back to what it does best, it sounds better, but a lot of those parts in between hurt this album a lot.

And then we have "The Darkest Nights." This song starts with the best riff, which also plays towards the ending; the verses are interesting and solid, with great vocals, and contrasting clean vocals that are the best on this entire album. "The Darkest Nights" is obviously the best song on the entire CD. "Empty Hearts" starts pretty heavy for As I Lay Dying's standards, but is a rather boring track throughout, especially after "The Darkest Nights." Then "Reflection" comes on and it seems to take a heavy influence from Darkest Hour and Dead To Fall; more of the former, though. And since Darkest Hour kick ass, then so does this track. The riffs come out well, and the shouting stands out on this track compared to other songs on the album.

"Repeating Yesterday" starts very mellow, and while the music never really picks up, the vocals do, which is an OK at best contrast, but you start to realize how hard they're trying to sound like Darkest Hour; from the vocals to the music work, it's screaming Darkest Hour. "Through Struggle" is another really good song with nice riffs in the beginning with some decent shouting, but once again, "Am I listening to Darkest Hour?" is the ringing question.

"The Truth Of Perception" and "Control Is Dead" sound generic and like every other song on the album, but "Morning Waits" sounds somewhat like "The Darkest Nights," another one of the best songs on the album because of its interesting riffs that stand out somewhat on the album. "Illusions" sounds a lot like older Dead To Fall and isn't the way to close out the album.

Overall, Shadows Are Security is a good album, but drags at times, is a little too generic, and doesn't sound really like their own band. I mean, every song sounds like Darkest Hour or Dead To Fall and even Atreyu with the Swedish guitar riffs and periodically clean vocals. This CD could have been better, but it's an okay buy for what it is. If you like this type of music, you'll probably like this. But if not, it probably won't convert you.

Well this album has me going confused.

I did like it, then I didnt really care for it, then I recently listened to it non stop, now I'm kind of 'who cares?'

I'm not sure who comes off as sounding stupider, the band's supporters or the band's detractors. "Ride your skateboards off a fucking cliff"? Haha, wow, please don't have kids, the gene pool really doesn't need to be dilluted any more than it already is.

Or how about reviewers who won't stand by their own opinions once they realize that lots of people don't agree with them? Say what you want about your tastes changing, you'll still come off as a wishy-washy pussy.

These comments are so boring, if you dont like as i lay dying why bother to write about them.

Shadows is one of the best metal albums in years.

I cant understand why people dislike metal bands that have positive lyrics, is so much better than listening to slipknot or some band that dosent back what they sing about. Is anyone from Slipknot in jail or on death row for murdering anyone yet....I mean be honest they live in luxury sing about stuff they dont live by...Its just so boring..

seriously, people like you make me sick.
you have nothing better to do than insult certain peoples' music interests. you aren't always right, and grow the fuck up. this site is designed to allow fans/spectators to review the kind of music they like and to point out to good and bad parts of the album.

now for the part for the people who actually like metal. yes, it does follow a type of formula, but then again doesnt every genre of music? so why worry who or what it sounds like. if you like it, you like it. the best tracks are: the darkest nights, meaning in tragedy, through struggle, and repeating yesterday. thanks.

and seriously, if i see any more piss ant pussbags on here insulting this genre or this band without any REAL backup to their point, im going to hunt them down and feed them my fist.

I think this cd is better that their last ....i mean they did take out a few more breakdowns which does suck cause breakdowns fuckin kick ass....but the addition of singing in some songs the singing gives the songs dynamics. and the sound quality is better, its got more bass and hits hard as fuck with the subs pumbin.. Confined is their best song to date in my opinion....either way this is a fuckin great band.

AILD = Overrated, generic metalcore crap

If you think they are awesome then I would suggest listening to more music, considering I can name a 100 metalcore bands better than them and then 500 better metal bands.

This CD kicks ass and sure it may not top the old cd, but its still awesome. And don't even say that all the songs sound the same fuckers, have you even listened to it? Tim Lambesis's vocals on the new cd are great and theres no effects on them at all. And who cares if they are a christain band what does that matter, you dont have to cuss and talk about bad stuff to be a bad ass band. And if you have seen ALID live, they do not suck at all. If you think they suck then you may have something wrong with you.

    Posted by Russe11 on 2005-09-23 12:51:07

Metal-core is either metal influenced hardcore, or hardcore influenced metal. For a metal influenced hardcore band check out Most Precious Blood or Terror, and for a hardcore influenced metal band check out maybe Hatebreed, or early Sinai Beach.

more of the same from this metalcore band that stands above most of the million of em out there these days, with guitars in the tradition of melodic metal and drumming that's even better than their previous work. Track 9 is my particular favorite on this one.

    My Score:

Frail Words Collapse was beautiful, great to listen to over and over, and damned unique in how they sounded.

This CD is just generic, they sound like other bands rather than the voice on Frail Words and a lot of their riffs are the same throughout the CD. It's an okay record, but certainly isn't at all good in comparison to Frail Words Collapse, which is sad to have to say, since they certainly have the ability to be that good.

That was the worse part. It's sad that the middle was kinda filler vocally and the music in between was filler ish repetitive, it ruined the clean vocals, swedish metal riffs, and solos, ok purchase for like $6 thanks to the Replay Card at Media Play...

    My Score:

Music's sweet, backup vocals are catchy, but one thing I really didn't like about this album was the main vocal patterns. It's like he wrote the lyrics before they wrote the music and he's trying to make it fit. There is almost NO variety in his voice.

"Man, I hope there's a wizard or dragon on that back cover."

Also, there is nothing having anything to do with "hardcore", as you call it, on this record. This is metal.

No wizard just a shitty background and this is not metal, it''s metalcore.

hey the best buy link lasts only 30 seconds what the hell?????

Not from like beginning of June till the 12th, they were full then...

saying this band is generic is like saying nirvana was generic because of all the bands that sounded like them. as i lay dying is leading the pack, and this is the best metalcore cd ever made. yeah, i said the best ever.

Leave and never ever, EVER COME BACK. IM ALREADY IN SHIT FOR GIVING this CD too high of a score, as I anknowledged.

How can you lead the pack when you sound like your ripping off a band in the same genre that sounds like a version of another band and so on. When listening to this CD I get a vibe of, that sounds like (insert metalcore band here)

It's good, but not original and can't lead the pack for that reason alone. It's not even a 7, I really should have gaven a 5 or 6.

    it's still pretty impressive

I can think of many bands that are more impressive and AILD are tyring to rip off these bands.

Save your money for Darkest Hour's "Undoing Ruin" and "Sleep In Your Grave" Manntis if you need more than 1 metalcore CD now. I'd rather buy the reissue of "The Curse" by Atreyu than suggest this, thank god I decided to only pay like $6 for it.

Posted by aubin on 2005-06-17 12:04:11

I just got this today, and even though it hits a lot of the "metalcore" cliches pretty hard, it's still pretty impressive. While I doubt any metal/hardcore hybrid is going to come close to Undoing Ruin, I think Shadows Are Security is still one of the better releases this year.

Ooooh, Atreyu? But doesnt everyone call them metalcore? Are they screametalcore? Cant we just shorten that down to shit?

    Dizzying really.....

But in all seriousness I dont hear a hint of metal in what the kids are calling scremo now. And when everyone namedrops the supposed "real" screamo bands, Rites of Spring or Hot Cross usually comes up, they just sound like plain old hardcore bands with a bit less testosterone. Is it really necessary to make a new genre everytime the formular is tweaked a little bit? Is Refused electrocore or something?

I actually just listened to it today. A friend of mine has a friend that is a cousin of Norris and I guess he received a copy a couple of days earlier. I listened to it in my health class and was glad to hear that their sound, style, and quality didn't diminish over the years - not to mention their songwriting. I enjoyed it just as much as Frail Words Collapse, and maybe a little more with the exception with a few more softer songs than on the last album. Anyway, this is purley my opinion.

This paragraph makes me think you should give it a 4 or 5. 6 at the max. I don't think I'd be that nice.

Score is for the reviewer. Probably the worst written review i've read since becoming a regular visitor to Punknews. Either you're stupid, or you just reflect the demographics of the kind of person who listens to this garbage.

it's good, but not as good as their first. Its like they went and listened to a bunch of It Dies Today and Killswitch Engage cds and thought "hmm, we're metal-core aren't we? We should try and sound more like this". They achieved it but it isnt for the better. still a good listen though.

10 years after Slaughter of the Soul and lame bands are still ripping off the ATG formula. This band sucks and they suck live. And they're CHRISTIAN.

One of the better cds I have ever bought not quite as good as Frail Words Collapse but in my book no cd ever comes close so thats not saying anything. Too many good songs and not any bad ones lets me give this cd what it deserves a 10. If you dont buy this you are seriously missing out. Exactly what metalcore should sound like and thats why As I Lay Dying is my favorite band right now.
