After a few years of utter nothingness that brought us a medicore full-length in 2003 (Before Everything And After) and a lacking compilation disc (Ten Years And Running), MxPx made a label switch and tried to release an album in the vein of their earlier releases. I found the result a pleasant if not forced surprise that puts it on par with Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo.

I'll give my impressions on some of the standout and ignorable tracks. The album begins with the infectious, up-tempo beat of "The Darkest Places." "Young And Depressed" is a song extremely reminiscent of SGTWOTB, with the exception of an unneeded, ballad-like section. "Heard That Song" is an enjoyable listen but the remedial, repetitive lyrics of the chrous quickly take away the appeal of the song. "Cold Streets" and "The Story" dont feel like MxPx songs to me for some reason, but I think that is simply because these remind me of their later, forgettable stuff.

"Wrecking Hotel Rooms" and "Kicking And Screaming" are two mediocre tracks (the latter especially) that drone on and on until you finally reach your finger to the skip track button.

"Grey Skies Turn Blue" is another catchy, radio-friendly track that deals with relationships (what a shock). For whatever reason, I find myself liking "Emotional Anarchist" more than I expected after my intial listen. This slow track features some well-placed rhymes and, best of all, doesn't fall into the trap of being as repetitively dull as some of the other tracks (which I found to be my biggest complaint). "Get Me Out" feels like a pressured attempt to create a harder sounding, almost hardcore song. The song itself doesnt bother me but it feels far from real when listening to it. "Waiting For The World To End" is another track that reminds me of material off SGTWOTB and stands as one of the better tracks, a song that seems to contemplate the meaning behind the current happenings in the world.

Overall, I find this a step back in the right direction for MxPx. This material is certainly better than the crap on their last record, and contains a collection of songs that have a sing-along quality and will garner a listen occasionally. The main thing dragging it down are too many dull and monotonous-feeling rhythms. Besides that, at times I get the feeling like the songs are not natural for the band and they are simply trying to return to a time they aren't able to really capture at this point and time. Nonetheless, kudos to the band for making an attempt to return to the sound their fans favor.

Great job MXPX! way better then your last album, I was getting kind of worried!

Alright first off it's heard that sound... not heard that song. And secondly this cd kicked tons of ass. Wrecking hotel rooms was awesome especially with Mark Hoppus. I mean come on, is there a better combination then MxPx and Mark hoppus... no. MXPX i'll always love you.

" Sure, people's beliefs change, but it's a bit of a coincedence that their message happened to change as soon as they were signed to A&M."

    1) MxPx's first album that didnt have an overall christian message was LIG - and that was on Tooth and Nail. It only had two songs on the whole cd that mentioned God - and both of those songs were about chicks (Andrea and Do Your Feet Hurt).

LIG was also released after they graduated from high school and after they had already done their first US tour.
In other words, they grew up.
Mike probably realized that there is a whole lot more to life than just God - and maybe he did have a change of beliefs.
    So what?

I was a super-christian in high school and now I'm not at all. You cant expect people to stay the same.

"guess" should've been "guys", but you knew that right?

Some people care about a band's lyrical content, and personal ethics, especially when they use it to generate a fanbase. Do you think MxPx would be anywhere near as big as they are if they had started out as a non-christian band? Personally I could care less what this band's stance on religion was/is, these guess haven't put out an album that I've liked since "Teenage Politics"

wut duz religion hav 2 do with the sound, albums r independant of 1 another in my book, 1 song can b a good song, even if all the others blow, so ya, they wer christien b4, so wut, they aren't anymore, get over it. (there is no god as far as i'm concerned anyway)

I think that the problem that a lot of people have with MxPx is that they are the epitome of a sell-out band. They started off as a band with a Christian message, and then abandoned said message in an attempt to go mainstream. Sure, people's beliefs change, but it's a bit of a coincedence that their message happened to change as soon as they were signed to A&M. Whether you are for or against Christianity, you have to admit that these guys sold-out completely (If any facts in this post aren't 100% correct, please contact someone who gives a fuck.).

Right, but he's known mostly for his woodstock era songs. I guess he would be a chrisitan artist, I just don't think of him that way, because I'm not familiar with his christian stuff, I only know of them.

No but if you replace the white trash and the bean with Jewish people it does.

"At the same time none of the aforementioned artist have signed to Christian labels, or attempted to market to the contemporary Christian audience! But they're still christian artists!!"

bob dylan made several contemporary christian records: slow train coming and saved are the ones i know of off the top of my head.

Posted by notfeelingcreative on 2005-06-17 22:58:12

One more thing to note is that Bob Dylan was not a Christian when he began making music in the 60's he found religion later in life. Whereas, the aforementioned people established themselves in the Christian market before making secular music. Billy Joel was a bad example on my part.

Sorry, but I've never been a big fan of christian pop music! Therefore, I really don't want to enjoy this album as much as I do! It's a fun record though. I hope to god that the dude who posted below is not the drummer though, that would be pretty sad. As far as my comment, I don't really listen to too much pop-punk anymore, so that's why I find it conflicting that I actually dig this record. Chill out, its an album, sorry if the members of the band are your: brother, father, boyfriend, cousin, nephew or former pizza guy.

I streamed some of this, the intros and music were kind of OK then the whole thing would go to hell when the singing started and the song would slow down and the whole thing would go to hell. These guys used to write better lyrics and sing them with more conviction even if they were just dumb pop-punk songs. It's not as bad as some of their recent stuff but it's still not anything with enough redeeming qualities to listen to twice. :(

    My Score:

I agree mostly with the reviewer. I just wonder if any of the people bashing this CD have listened to this CD, since they already seem to hate them so much anyway. Personally, I found their last CD really boring and the CD before that just simply too overproduced, but actually not bad. Definetly an improvement over the last 2 albums. By the way, I'm not from the MxPx message board and I doubt most of the people (some of them however I can tell are big fans by the 5 star ratings, which I can't agree with totally) giving it positive reviews are. I noticed they did kinda rip off Bad Religion's "Live Again(the Fall of Men)" from THEIR last CD, but with the bridge of the song salvaged it from being considered too much like it and I thought it was kinda clever of them to do that. I do agree it's a step in the right direction, their last CD did indeed try to appeal to the Simple Plan/Good Charlotte/New Found Glory crowd and failed to reach the level of those bands and I think that kinda taught them a lesson. But to be fair to the critics, that is not Tom playing those solos. The liner notes say its some guy named Jack Parker. Seth Roberts who is their 2nd guitarist on tour will probably do all of those fast solos. Tom I hate to say can only do doubletime fast rhythm guitar(good examples of this is Life In General), catchy hooks and a few cool riffs, but nothing that bluesy and Chuck Berry like. This album I'd have to say is above a little "Buffalo", but still under par compared to "Life in General" and "Teenage Politics". But I say they have time to improve.

The good songs on this cd are really good and the bad songs are really really bad. "Wrecking Hotel Rooms" is probably the worst song I've ever heard from this band. Sure enough it was co-written by Mark Hoppus.

Songs 1 and 2 are really good. 1 is a typical catchy MxPx track similar to "The Next Big Thing." Song 2 is really catchy and has some nice guitar work, only bad thing about this song is it sounds so much like Blink 182 for a few seconds.

I really like song 5. It's a different sound from them and they perform it well.

Song 7 is really good too. It has one of the best guitar solo's I've heard from this band. This song reminds me a lot of "The Quest" by Ten Foot Pole.

Song 10, Emotional Anarchist, is very catchy but the lyrics are strange. MxPx hasn't really shown their political side before and I still don't think they have here. The lyrics don't really take a stance on anything.

yeah seriously... it seems lie all the ffans fromt heir forum showed up or something. this album really isnt very good folks. if you liked the old mxpx, you probably wont like this. if you liked the more recent mxpx, you might like this because you'll be able to say stuff about how its a return to their roots, even though you havent heard teenage politics or pokinatcha.

everybody knows that mxpx never had brilliant lyrics, but these are just horrible. SGTWOTB had some of their best lyrics to date, probably because of how they mostly talked about their split with tooth and nail. this album doesnt even come close to that, let alone LIG.

also, whats the deal with mike singing like his balls got cut off? dude... sing in your range.

i maintain that i still think they have a good album in them somewhere, but this just isnt it. catch them live though, because they still put on an entertaining set.

this cd really grows on you...i've listened to it way more than i thought i would

it's a lot better than their last one DOES feel more mature than any of their other stuff (hard to digest that i know)

a couple skippable tracks but i love the Bad Religion sounding "Late Again"

also, the beginning of "Call In Sick" is practically identical to "Incomplete" by Bad Religion

Wow-I didn't think this album would be very good, but judging from the reviews, I should have bought it instead of Punk Goes 80's. That album sucked!

    My Score:

first of all, it should be noted that only 3 songs on this cd are about girls!!! that has to be a record for these guys. seriously, 'grey skies turn blue' 'call in sick' and 'wrecking hotel rooms' are the only songs about girls on here....crazy.

a nice step back to their late 90's sound and away from the super radio friendly and poppy overproduced last album. similar sonically to SGTWOTB , i agree w/ that

darkest places is one of their best songs ever

'young and depressed' and 'emotional anarchist' both have that classic 'so cheesey and stupid , yet so catchy you gotta smile' mxpx feel to them.

'the story' is def. a great song. darker and harder than almost anything they've ever done. a serious song pulled off well.

'wrecking hotel rooms' is fun for what it is

'heard that sound' is another keeper. classic mxpx. nice anthem.

i'm surprised no one has mentioned 'call in sick' yet. perfect summer, windows down, hookin up w/ girls song. haha.

'let me out' or whatever is terrible, but so was 'fist vs. tact'. guess they still think they can pull off hardcore songs. they can't. very cringeworthy.

'cold streets' also just doesnt sit well w/ me. dark like 'the story' but just not as convincing

'kicking and screaming' is a throwaway track

'grey skies turn blue' is another perfect mxpx song

they really stuck to their classic formula and brought us a nice stripped down pop punk record that shows all their sides, dark, light, poppy, sometimes serious. as always they do the poppy stuff better but whatever.

i have to diagree with this review. i have had this album for quite a while and have seen several of the songs performed live and have to say this is simply the best record mxpx has every put out. The guitars are incredible and the songs are really diverse...i know people whine that it's not hard enough or sounds like simple plan or good charlotte. if it's not hard enough for you don't listen to it...and a little fyi mxpx has been around longer than most bands and continue to put out quality records. I am proud of these guys and this album, give it a listen and pick up a copy.

"Does this band write fast songs? Yes. Does this band write catchy songs? Yes.

Guess what.... so do Simple Plan and Good Charlotte. And nowadays, thanks to MxPx horrid horrid horrid horrid lyrics and generic music, MxPx is not any better than those bands.

If you think this CD is good, then your taste in music is obviously different than mine. I'm not going to necessarily flat out say your taste in music is "bad", but you like a band whose sound can most easily be compared to Simple Plan and Good Charlotte, so draw your own conclusion. ("But they sound like Social D now!" Nah.)

This band used to be good. The lyrics were never genius, and they were never super original, but at least they weren't insulting.

If you like this CD and are over 14, you should totally be ashamed."

yeah, i'm really ashamed. sorry. please forgive me for having a different taste in music than you. Nice praeteritio, though.

I am actually the reviewer, I have had the CD for 6 weeks. I listened to this quite a few times before reveiwing but made a couple of late night mistakes(Heard That Song lol). Honestly this came off sounding a bit more negative than I meant it when reading but I like I said I still think this was a vast improvement over their recent stuff.

    My Score:

This review is not very good. If you're going to bash a song, at least get the title right...Its called "Heard That Sound"...Not "Heard That Song". Which is an awesome song. Its been said before, but it really sounds like it could be a Social D song. I found it to be interesting that Joe Gittleman of the Bosstones. There's actually a lot of guests on this album. Mark Hoppus sings back up and helped write " Wrecking Hotel Rooms", a song that could have easily fit on Blinks newest. Get Me Out, was co written by Steve Soto from the Adolescents, Manic Hispanic, and 22 Jacks fame...that would probably explain the sound. All in all this is a great album. I agree with The Story perhaps being one of the best songs they've ever written. After reading this review, I'm almost convinced that this guy probably didnt even buy the cd. Next time do your homework.
    Great Album

Not that I judge my music on comments here, but I like to hear what other people liked or didn't like... But I was scared to click on this link because yes MXPX has produced some pretty shitty music in the last couple of years. I saw them at SXSW in a tent with like 50 people. It was amazing. And I remembered why I loved these guy so much. And this CD was amazing compared to the last one. I think its a good direction and shows that MXPX isn't ready for the grave yet.

i disagree with the review - i dont think this cd sounds forced at all.

every song on this cd is very good, and most importantly - each song is unique. there's a song on here for every mxpx fan.

The Story is one of the best songs this band has EVER written.
i'm also surprised that the reviewer did not mention the guitars on this album - Tom really showcases his talent on Panic more than any other album previously.

in short - get this cd.

This is a great album, the songs the reviewer didnt like, sound like mxpx's take on different bands. Wrecking Hotel Rooms is obviously a blink 182 ripoff and not too good, but heard that sound sounds like social distortion, i also hear some bad religion and even some rancid sounding songs. I dont know if the band was doing this on purpose but its kinda cool.
