After a few years of utter nothingness that brought us a medicore full-length in 2003 (Before Everything And After) and a lacking compilation disc (Ten Years And Running), MxPx made a label switch and tried to release an album in the vein of their earlier releases. I found the result a pleasant if not forced surprise that puts it on par with Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo.

Great job MXPX! way better then your last album, I was getting kind of worried! Alright first off it's heard that sound... not heard that song. And secondly this cd kicked tons of ass. Wrecking hotel rooms was awesome especially with Mark Hoppus. I mean come on, is there a better combination then MxPx and Mark hoppus... no. MXPX i'll always love you. Some people care about a band's lyrical content, and personal ethics, especially when they use it to generate a fanbase. Do you think MxPx would be anywhere near as big as they are if they had started out as a non-christian band? Personally I could care less what this band's stance on religion was/is, these guess haven't put out an album that I've liked since "Teenage Politics" wut iz speling? iz overr8ed newayz. wut duz religion hav 2 do with the sound, albums r independant of 1 another in my book, 1 song can b a good song, even if all the others blow, so ya, they wer christien b4, so wut, they aren't anymore, get over it. (there is no god as far as i'm concerned anyway) I think that the problem that a lot of people have with MxPx is that they are the epitome of a sell-out band. They started off as a band with a Christian message, and then abandoned said message in an attempt to go mainstream. Sure, people's beliefs change, but it's a bit of a coincedence that their message happened to change as soon as they were signed to A&M. Whether you are for or against Christianity, you have to admit that these guys sold-out completely (If any facts in this post aren't 100% correct, please contact someone who gives a fuck.). Right, but he's known mostly for his woodstock era songs. I guess he would be a chrisitan artist, I just don't think of him that way, because I'm not familiar with his christian stuff, I only know of them. One more thing to note is that Bob Dylan was not a Christian when he began making music in the 60's he found religion later in life. Whereas, the aforementioned people established themselves in the Christian market before making secular music. Billy Joel was a bad example on my part. At the same time none of the aforementioned artist have signed to Christian labels, or attempted to market to the contemporary Christian audience! But they're still christian artists!! General. Sorry, but I've never been a big fan of christian pop music! Therefore, I really don't want to enjoy this album as much as I do! It's a fun record though. I hope to god that the dude who posted below is not the drummer though, that would be pretty sad. As far as my comment, I don't really listen to too much pop-punk anymore, so that's why I find it conflicting that I actually dig this record. Kids, get you fucking head out of your ass... I only ever liked one song they did "I like this, but I really don't want to." I like this, but I really don't want to. I streamed some of this, the intros and music were kind of OK then the whole thing would go to hell when the singing started and the song would slow down and the whole thing would go to hell. These guys used to write better lyrics and sing them with more conviction even if they were just dumb pop-punk songs. It's not as bad as some of their recent stuff but it's still not anything with enough redeeming qualities to listen to twice. :( thank god it's a lot better than before everything and after Seriously, this is surprisingly good. I agree mostly with the reviewer. I just wonder if any of the people bashing this CD have listened to this CD, since they already seem to hate them so much anyway. Personally, I found their last CD really boring and the CD before that just simply too overproduced, but actually not bad. Definetly an improvement over the last 2 albums. By the way, I'm not from the MxPx message board and I doubt most of the people (some of them however I can tell are big fans by the 5 star ratings,which I can't agree with totally) giving it positive reviews are. I noticed they did kinda rip off Bad Religion's "Live Again(the Fall of Men)" from THEIR last CD, but with the bridge of the song salvaged it from being considered too much like it and I thought it was kinda clever of them to do that. I do agree it's a step in the right direction, their last CD did indeed try to appeal to the Simple Plan/Good Charlotte/New Found Glory crowd and failed to reach the level of those bands and I think that kinda taught them a lesson. But to be fair to the critics, that is not Tom playing those solos. The liner notes say its some guy named Jack Parker. Seth Roberts who is their 2nd guitarist on tour will probably do all of those fast solos. Tom I hate to say can only do doubletime fast rhythm guitar(good examples of this is Life In General), catchy hooks and a few cool riffs, but nothing that bluesy and Chuck Berry like. This album I'd have to say is above a little "Buffalo", but still under par compared to "Life in General" and "Teenage Politics". But I say they have time to improve. My faith in MxPx was restored with this album, my favorite tracks being the story and grey skies turn blue, I'm glad they're finally rocking again and cant wait to catch them on warped this summer! I think it's just the MXPX fanboys who are going on about it. Wow, Cold Streets and The Story are the two best songs on the album (Late Again also). Great work by a band who as far as i am concerned, has consistently put out good music for the past 10-11 years..... And has just put out there best album since slowly going-oldpunker i have to diagree with this review. i have had this album for quite a while and have seen several of the songs performed live and have to say this is simply the best record mxpx has every put out. The guitars are incredible and the songs are really diverse...i know people whine that it's not hard enough or sounds like simple plan or good charlotte. if it's not hard enough for you don't listen to it...and a little fyi mxpx has been around longer than most bands and continue to put out quality records. I listened to this quite a few times before reveiwing but made a couple of late night mistakes(Heard That Song lol). Honestly this came off sounding a bit more negative than I meant it when reading but I like I said I still think this was a vast improvement over their recent stuff. This review is not very good. If you're going to bash a song, at least get the title right...Its called "Heard That Sound"...Not "Heard That Song". Which is an awesome song. Its been said before, but it really sounds like it could be a Social D song. I found it to be interesting that Joe Gittleman of the Bosstones. There's actually a lot of guests on this album. Mark Hoppus sings back up and helped write " Wrecking Hotel Rooms", a song that could have easily fit on Blinks newest. Get Me Out, was co written by Steve Soto from the Adolescents, Manic Hispanic, and 22 Jacks fame...that would probably explain the sound. All in all this is a great album. I agree with The Story perhaps being one of the best songs they've ever written. After reading this review, I'm almost convinced that this guy probably didnt even buy the cd. Next time do your homework. Not that I judge my music on comments here, but I like to hear what other people liked or didn't like... But I was scared to click on this link because yes MXPX has produced some pretty shitty music in the last couple of years. I saw them at SXSW in a tent with like 50 people. It was amazing. And I remembered why I loved these guy so much. And this CD was amazing compared to the last one. I think its a good direction and shows that MXPX isn't ready for the grave yet. i disagree with the review - i dont think this cd sounds forced at all. good cd, alot of infleunces... i think the story is the catchiest song on here I disagree with the review somewhat, "Heard That Sound" is one of the catchiest songs on this disc. This definatley won't be in my top 10 list for the year, but i found myself enjoying this album. And considering the only MXPX cd I ever found worthwhile was "Let It Happen", this is a good thing. "The Darkest Places" is a damn catchy tune. This is a great album, the songs the reviewer didnt like, sound like mxpx's take on different bands. Wrecking Hotel Rooms is obviously a blink 182 ripoff and not too good, but heard that sound sounds like social distortion, i also hear some bad religion and even some rancid sounding songs. I dont know if the band was doing this on purpose but its kinda cool. |
