While, like past years, the vast majority of this year's Warped Tour compilation relies on tracks widely available on label/band website, purevolume and Myspace pages alike, the range and diversity of the bands stays intact as well.

You've got your standard share of singles from the bigger names in the circuit, that being Fall Out Boy's "Saturday," "Checkmarks" from the Academy Is..., Rufio's "Out Of Control," Hawthorne Heights' "Ohio Is For Lovers," "Sydney" from Halifax, Armor For Sleep's "Car Underwater," Silverstein's "Smashed Into Pieces," etc. al. Offered up as well, however, are new tracks from Boys Night Out, A Wilhelm Scream, and Dropkick Murphys, amongst a few others.

Oh, since you're bound to ask anyway, here's your answer in advance:

Like He-man going through a Chinese phone book. After a bout of heightened fertilization in the country. As a new sexual enhancement product has just hit shelves.

The question you're asking? That'd be "how much does that new Wilhelm Scream track rip?" The sub-two minute blast of melodic punk is the highlight of the compilation, with the band's superb vocal harmonies, breakneck pace and splendiferous solo in the bridge all acting to make "Me Vs. Morrissey In The Pretentious Contest (The Ladder Match)" the standout by far.

There are some both pretty genius and entertaining acts of sequencing scattered around the disc as well. Maybe it's just because I like the former's track exponentially better, but Hot Water Music's "Poison" follows up the short fade of FOB's "Saturday" perfectly. Atreyu's metal riffs, however, surging through the speakers immediately after Street Dogs' friendly street anthem "You Alone?" Hilarious. The delicately anthemic "Composing" from Boys Night Out's precedes the heavily Jimmy Eat World-inspired "Take Me Away" from Plain White T's nicely. The Matches' "Dog-Eared Page" follows Strung Out's "Analog" surprisingly well. The 1-2-3 of Underoath, Hopesfall and From First To Last on Disc 1 makes sense. And, you know, "Ohio Is For Lovers" following Strike Anywhere's "To The World" is a bit ironic considering my public opinions of both bands are basically polar opposites.

The black sheep award of the two-disc set belongs to the post-Ellis Island romp of Gogol Bordello's mid-tempo gypsy punk in "Start Wearing Purple." It's a bizzarre, world-influenced track that, per the band's usual sound, leans more heavily to the band's (mostly) Ukranian heritage than American punk or hardcore. However, the definitively Bob Marley-influenced grooves of Bedouin Soundclash's "Gyasi Went Home" is a close second.

All in all, the 2005 Warped Tour compilation leaves its format as is, serving up another 50 tracks of music at a pretty reasonable price. Depending upon your tastes / buying habits / etc., it may be worth a look at at least.

    My Score:

I was depressed when I got done listening to this compilation. I was depressed that I wasted my gas getting to the freaking mall, depressed that I wasted my time rummaging through crappy records in Best Buy to find it, and depressed that I spent all my pocket change to buy this $8 coaster.

    Here's the summary:
    Dropkick Murphys = awesome
    Offspring = awesome
    MXPX = awesome
    Pennywise = awesome
    Left Alone = awesome
    Go Betty Go = awesome
    Tsunami Bomb = awesome
    The Unseen = awesome
Big D & The Kids Table = awesome
No Use For A Name = awesome
    Flogging Molly = awesome
    Gogol Bordello = awkward
everything else = a complete waste of my $8 (I'm still grieving)

It's disappointing when you hear the Transplants, Anti-Flag, and Avenged Sevenfold are going to play Warped, and they don't even make the freakin' compilation. Maybe next year...

    Hawhtorne Heights.

The band that's gettign a different named pushed at us as the old HH and ironically they changed their name to a California area though they from the nearby Dayton, Ohio area.

HH can die and there the band I hate the most. I just get pissed seeing those Ohio Are For Lovers shirts, wtf? That makes no sense. You can't use your state in al lyric like that for no reason. Also, the "Im gonna cut my wrists and blacken my eyes" cliche in emo is funny, but they actually use the generic cliche lyrics straight in their songs, its funny.

HH Suck worse than my Finch Review or any other band ever. I'd rather watch MTV then listen to them.

I always skip that song though, solves problem.

is there any SKA on this comp?

    -------------------------------------------------------- ------------------

No. The only ska band on here is Big D and the Kids Table. There may be another one, but that's all that I remember.

Posted by chokingvictim on 2005-06-23 19:08:48

Actually 2004 and 2005 were the best comps and 2002-03 blew monkey chunks and 2001 was ok but only 26 songs...

    ----------------------------------------------------- ---------------------

I suppose. I probably like the older ones better because they introduced me to more bands....the later comps I've been familiar with most of the bands, so it wasn't as good. But this has Hawthorne Heights on it, so no matter what the standing before was, it gets pushed to the bottom of the warped tour comps list.

all this talk of labeling bands leads me to a random question. if you were to label Against Me! where would you put them? punk/emo/nuemo/screamo/ska/metal/numetal/postpunk/postska/??????? ?

    Posted by davebrave4 on 2005-06-20 23:01:35

Did you freaking read my comment, or just the bands? That's what I said. some kids call those bands hardcore, some limit it to bands like bane and stuff. weather or not atreyu is hardcore is not the point; all I'm saying is that some kids label them as hardcore. Think before you post, dude.

Posted by punkcorekid on 2005-06-20 22:39:36

fuck...the correct/incorrect part of my comment below came out wrong...but you know what i was trying to say, fuck off.

Posted by punkcorekid on 2005-06-20 22:38:58

to the guy below....you're a moron.

correct...bane and sick of it all are hardcore.

incorrect....atreyu, the bled, avenged sevenfold are not hardcore.

just because those bands are called hardcore by kids who don't know what hardcore is, doesn't mean we should accept them as hardcore.

    Posted by davebrave4 on 2005-06-20 22:14:38

Okay. I'm the guy everybody got mad at for naming hardcore bands. There are many types of harcore music. The are bands like Sick of it All and Bane. Then there are bands like Avenged Sevenfold. Then there are bands like the Bled and Atreyu. i'm not saying all these bands are good; just that they are considered hardcore.
Speaking of the Bled, I saw them at warped. I don't care what you guys say; their show was freakin' sweet. I touched the singer's crazy hair. It made me giggle.

Let's get back to talking about how A Wilhelm Scream is reinventing fast, aggressive punk rock and how they are quickly taking the torch away from Rise Against as the scene's most loved melodic hardcore band.

Mark my words, as soon as A Wilhelm Scream gets relatively 'big" every single one of you kids liking them right now will be saying they weren't that good and you never liked them anyway.

this "no score" is for the jackass who couldn't find one band on this entire comp worth thinking is decent, and still thinks he has any reason to be reading/posting on a site dedicated to punk rock. Maybe they're not all great punk bands, but i think it's time you head over to buddyhead and join the rest of your pretentious elitist pals.

    e·lit·ism or é·lit·ism
    n.

    1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
    2.
    1. The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class.
    2. Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.

whos being an elitist? i simply expressed my opinion. i never told you to leave the site that ive been posting on for 4 years, or declared that you have "no reason to be posting on a site dedicated to punk rock."

maybe you should look up words before you use them, kiddo. i reccommend dictionary.com

Score's for the new Pennywise song, I downloaded it and it's a "typical Pennywise song", but one of high caliber. If they can make a whole album of songs with that quality it will be better than anything since Full Circle. I'm not going to bother hearing the rest of this comp or going to Warped though, too much shit I have no tolerance for.

"Haulin' ass blast-beat hardcore punk. Nothing else is delivered with such hostility. I say hats off to hardcore punk becuase it helps separate me from society. Few in numbers and always will be. Let the mainstream kids waste their money on bobby bands [atreyu, avenged sevenfold] who could give a fucking shit...if you even goddamn exist."

Things you'll see at the warped tour:
    1. The hot topic army (the general audience)
    2. $4.00 bottled water.
    3. Jeans and t-shirts so tight it's nauseating. (t-shirts must have off centered pink design preferably over the shoulder)
    4. Handgun belt buckles.
    5. 3 good bands.
    6. 30 really bad bands.
    7. Mop hair
    8. Bandanas in the back pocket
    9. The pickin up change dance.
    10. Limited parking...(for the parents)
    11. 14-16 year old groupies
    12. Kevin Lyman counting stacks and stacks of hard cash.

    Fuck.

I heard that at last year's Warped Tour there was a stand where you could get a picture of yourself in a DODGE NEON! First off, who the fuck actually wants a picture of themselves in car like that? Not to mention the fact that having company like that sponsor your tour destroys any shred of credibility that it may have once had. Having GM and Kraft Dinner support your tour is about as "punk" as Ozzfest . Maybe that's why this year's line-up is so shitty (With a few exceptions).

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 18, 2005 at 3:58 PM (EDT)

in lieu of giving you all a 500-word rant on what modern hardcore is I'll simply tell you this:
Dropdead. Drop. fucking. dead. If have never heard of this band, you are firmly excluded in all arguments about hardcore music.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 18, 2005 at 3:55 PM (EDT)

I went to the warped tour in it's first two years when it was all punk/ska bands...then, from warped 3 on, it began to roll ever downward until it formed the huge clusterfuck of musical shit it is today. Fuck you Kevin Lyman, fuck the warped tour...fuck all of you.

"Start Wearing Purple" is hilarious. Why didn't they put a Transplants track on there? They're on the tour.

The tour's gonna be hilarious this year. It's gona be all hardcore bands. Bands like All-American Rejects and NOFAN are gonna feel so out of place.

The Pennywise song is fucking great. It beats every song on their last cd, hands down. It beats most of their past 3 cd's in terms of fast skate punk. I mean, it sounds like it could have been off About TIme, easily, the song is fucking great.

    Other then that, other highlights:
Bedouin Soundclash - Gysai Went Home
Amber Pacific - Gone So Young
Left Alone - By My Side

Is it me, or is that dreadful Hawthorne Heights song just about popping up everywhere? Every goddamn compilation and I even came across it trying to download the new Winamp. That's just crazy.... but also wrong

Posted by rkl on 2005-06-17 09:17:28

not really. there is life after epitaph.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, June 17, 2005 at 9:17 AM (EDT)

How many more discs can those 2 Hawthorne and Silverstein tracks appear on?! Jesus christ. Give it a rest already.

The two best and most talented bands on the comp are Gogol Bordello and Bedouin Soundclash. Score is for them.

    ------

    Amen to that brother

The Pennywise song on it fucking kills. Outside of that, I didn't really find anything worth listening to that I didn't already have.

Reverse Daycare - IMPROVED FOR '05!!!

"A tented, air-conditioned area where kids can drop off their parents while they cruise the action of the festival. There will be a masseuse on hand to take care of the parents and movies will be shown in the tent, which will be equipped with "noise proofed" headphones. Parents will be able to get away from the heat and noise, enjoy cold drinks and discuss the triumphs of parenthood as their kids rock out to the music and activities."

I had the pleasure of listening to the whole Wilhelm Scream cd with Chris when they came through Detroit with the Larry Arms...and I have to say it is 1000 times better than mute print(which is amazing by itself). The new cd is going to be the best cd of the year hands down.

    My Score:

score is for the new Wilhelm Scream song. it is THAT fucking good.

the past three years i plunked down the $5 for this, cause it usually piqued my interest. after seeing the tracklisting for this year, i decided $5 was not worth a new AWS song...the only real song i wanted to hear off this bad boy.

NUFAN could've at least put a song other than "For Fiona" on this one. I mean, it's their single, and they used it for the e-card, and it's going to be on the next Floyd comp...

    -Chinatown

I heard from Over It that the new A Wilhelm Scream CD is better than the first, more palm muting, more metal...everything better, so I'm excited about it.

    My Score:

I think having MxPx as the very first song is a great marketing strategy considering they just signed to SideOneDummy(same label as this comp). I like the song too.

    Hot Water Music-Poison
    Rufio-Out of Control
    Amber Pacific-Gone So Young
    NUFAN-For Fiona
    A Wilhelm Scream-Me vs Morrissey.....

    Disc Two:

Pennywise-Yell Out(sounds like their new cd is gonna be great)
    Millencolin-Ray
    Gatsby's American Dream-Theatre
    Go Betty Go-Saturday
    Strung Out-Analog
    The Matches-Dog-eared page
    Tsunami Bomb-Being Alright

I don't understand why they used most of the bands singles for this compilation, considering most of them aren't very good. Or why they used to same From First To Last song two years in a row.
