Every once in a while, a punk album is released with so much energy, intensity and passion that it reminds the listener why he or she was drawn to punk in the first place. The music can serve to re-ignite a spark in the listener that brings back old feelings of anger, rebellion and community and make them feel new again. State Of Discontent is that kind of album.

The Unseen have slowly garnered popularity in the punk scene over the past decade, releasing a slew of great hardcore punk albums. SOD, their first for Hellcat Records, takes the best of those releases and refines the sound to create a masterpiece of bristling street punk. From the moment the soft opening vocals of "On The Other Side" fade away and the music bursts forward into a galloping punk beat, you can tell that this will be one hell of an album.

And it is. Over the next 13 tracks, State Of Discontent defines the word "relentless" by never letting the intensity drop for a second. This album, more than any I've heard in recent memory, embodies the energy and excitement of a live punk show. By the time the record is over, you feel exhausted, but energized at the same time. The Unseen capture the spirit of hardcore / street punk without crossing the line into the genre's clichés.

For a genre that usually sounds all the same, State Of Discontent offers a surprising amount of musical and lyrical diversity. Bush-era politics get a thorough bashing on "Weapons Of Mass Deception" and the excellent "Force-Fed," while "On The Other Side" deals with teen suicide. "Scream Out" and "We Are All That We Have" are touching tributes to the power of music to change lives. And of course, a hardcore punk album wouldn't be complete without a good old-fashioned "fuck you" anthem, and the Unseen deliver in great form with "Waste Of Time," which is enough to get the blood boiling with one listen.

They save the best for (next to) last however, with "Final Execution," which is not only the Unseen's best song to date, but one of the finest punk songs to come along in years, in this reviewer's opinion. With an awesome opening riff, unbelievably catchy chorus and build-up to a fist-pumping finale, "Final Execution" perfectly embodies everything a great punk song should be. It's followed by a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black." If that seems like an odd choice, it isn't. The song is a jaded and bitter observation of life and the world, which fits in perfect with the tone of this album.

This review has gone on way too fucking long at this point, so I'll cap it off by saying this: The Unseen have always been an amazing band, but with State Of Discontent, they establish themselves firmly as one of the best bands in punk today. They have crafted a hardcore masterpiece that can easily hold its own next to classics like Minor Threat, Black Flag or the Germs. If punk is dead, this may be the album to revive it.

"This record is really great. The nearest comparison I could give you is probably AFI, but in what I would consider their best "era." (That is, the 1996-1997 where they brought you Very Proud of Ya and Shut Your Mouth...)

Don't get me wrong, it's not a clone or anything, but if you liked those albums, you'll probably like this."

Funny. I'm on pandora.com right now and I decided to try an AFI radio station. First song they played: The Devil Loves you from "Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes". The next song? Waste of Time from The Unseen's "State of Discontent".

In other words, good call Aubin.

Black Flag is a fucking incredable band, even after Rollins joined it, but come on. there is other good music out there you fuckheads. so what if the unseen all have mohawks and dress like punks. they are punk and this album rocks

The newest album as of 2005 by the well known punk band The Unseen, has only continued to impress me. Their ability to remain original while changing up is proven in the State of Discontent. It is awarded all stars, keeping the record of straight hits on my list.

I just hate the people who say "I'm more punk than you" and all that shit. Well if you are so fucking punk and hardcore, then go form your own fucking band and stop complaining about other bands. Complaining over the internet about other bands and people must be the least punk thing to do. But who the fuck cares what is punk and what is not punk? It's just music. Yes it is a lifestyle too, but go live your life the way you want it. Punk has no fucking rules, so don't tell anybody how to live, dress or act.
    Man, fuck it all.

This record is PUNK and it is a good record. 3,5/5 is a good rating i think.

And if you think the shit sucks, why the hell listen to it? And why the hell spend so much time complaining, life must be hard for you fuckers.

This is a great band with a great live show. I've seen them 6 times and they never disappoint, but I'd have to say that this record does. I am a true believer that The Unseen are the most talented of all the "street punk" bands (that's most likely why they signed to Epitaph for this one). The sound is polished but it doesn't take away from the music. It does sound more produced then any previous albums, although on songs like Screaming Out I definitely get an Anger and the Truth vibe. But this album doesn’t have the standard Unseen tempo, but that’s not always a bad thing. It’s understandable that after four full lengths and a slew of singles that they have decided to slow down a bit.

So here are my tips for The Unseen to reclaim the title of the current best, and most aggressive band in “punk”:

    1) Find Paul and force him back in the band (I believe The Anger and The Truth is the best album because there’s a ton of diversity in singers from Tripp, to Paul, to Mark. It also has the best song writing)

    2) If you’re going to keep Scott force him to sing more then in unison. (He has a voice all on his own and we’re curious to what it sounds like.)

    3) Mark needs to get behind the kit! (the last 3 times I saw you guys Mark was full time lead singer, but the best shows I’ve seen by your band is when mark plays half the set as a drummer then singer the second half)

The only reason I’m saying all this is because I know that The Unseen are five times the band then they show on this record. That’s why it’s a disappointment.

I bought "Lower Class Crucifixion" which was a good album, then I bought "Explode" which I later sold for 3 dollars. I'm kinda weary on purchasing this, the songs I've heard were decent at best but everyone seems to be holding it so high. Oh well, I need to save my money for the new Suicide Machines.

How can you really compare the Unseen to Minor Threat and Black Flag? Minor Threat and Black Flag were crucial in the evolution of punk/harcore despite how you feel about their quality of music. Those bands were ground breaking. Do you really think people will be covering Unseen songs and still listening to this album twenty years down the line. I don't think so. Is this album going to lead to some sort of new musical revolution. No. Nothing against the Unseen, though. I don't believe the Unseen would think they should be compared with Minor Threat or Black Flag either. The Unseen are good but no band playing harcore/punk today deserves to be put on the same level as those that paved the way for them

Well Black Flag and Minor Threat are overrated but still okay in my book.
No need to get all crazy there joey

Well I have seen people bash everyone from Minor Threat (see Chinatown) to the Dead Kennedys to the Ramones so I'm going to assume they're being serious. Sue me.

    My Score:

After repeated listening, this album has overtaken "The Anger and the Truth" as my favorite Unseen release. Even though I like their cds, I can't get into their live show. I've seen them twice in the past year, and I thought they were horrible both times. Maybe I caught them on two "off" nights.

"True because The Unseen are better band, come on people the 80's are over with........and overrated"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Wow. My first Black Flag vs. Unseen discussion. Bah, I knew it was coming sooner or later. Considering the Unseen probably wouldn't consider themselves better than Black Flag or Minor Threat, I don't get your argument unless you're doing so just to be different. Come on kid, the Unseen are nice with their spiky mohawks and astute "political" insight but they're the 1,000,000th rehash of what Black Flag and Minor Threat were doing, only those old and unoriginal bands did it faster, harder, smarter and better.

Although I'll give the Unseen credit, they're one of the better copycat acts around.

Man, go listen to Out of Step again. Really, that's a lot better than the first 7"

    My Score:

I agree that Minor Threat is way overrated. I have trouble making it past anything after song 8 on Complete Discography (with the exception of "Good Guys...," that song rules). It's like Ian and Co. forgot how to write good choruses immediately after releasing their first demo.

Fugazi is a million times better.

I haven't really liked any of the Unseen's other albums, but a 10/10 from someone with good enough taste to also give a 10/10 to Antimaniax also, I might have to check it out.

this band belongs nowhere near black flag or minor threat

They save the best for (next to) last however, with "Final Execution," which is not only the Unseen's best song to date, but one of the finest punk songs to come along in years, in this reviewer's opinion.

Are you fucking kidding me ? What about Jon Bon Jovi's It's My Life ? I AIN'T GONNA LIVE FOREVER.

"This record is really great. The nearest comparison I could give you is probably AFI, but in what I would consider their best "era." (That is, the 1996-1997 where they brought you Very Proud of Ya and Shut Your Mouth...)"

those two albums are completely different though...

Wow, I own this album and like it very much but I think giving it a PERFECT score is just not right.

Their song on RAB Vol. 2 sounded like Anti-Flag. I doubt that the rest of this album is much better.

They re-recorded it. sounds so much better but yeah i agree with ya on the RAB version

I like this album. It's a little different then their older stuff. But as some people said, it's similar to some older AFI stuff, which borrowed some hardcore elements. I think people who like strike anywhere and stuff like that will like this also. The vocalist gets little annoying sometimes, but when i'm in the mood to listen to this, It's a good album.

The Unseen is a not shitty band, yet has absolutely no chance in standing next to Minor Threat. This band isn't hardcore, they have annoying vocals over punk music. BOOOOOOOOOOO

Don't get me wrong, it's not a clone or anything, but if you liked those albums, you'll probably like this.

This album doesnt deserve 5 stars, because its not that good right away, it had to grow on me but now i think its a great cd.
It does sound like anti-flag yet not as much complaining.
