Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

To be a punk band at this level of popularity is to wear a fairly big target. While the Dropkick Murphys' detractors are inevitable, they seem to be some of the most simultaneously vocal and hopelessly irrational around. The Murphys, tough working class exterior aside, have always seemed conscious of this. Looking back on their catalogue, it really does seem at times that they've made efforts to accommodate their dissenters and "fix what's broken." Whether this is rooted in genuine concern for the fans or typical artistic self-consciousness is up for debate, but with The Warrior's Code, the Murphys sound, for the first time in years, like they're creating for themselves.

It makes every bit of sense that after the celebrated Do Or Die, some purists went on the attack. The departure of a lead vocalist isn't the easiest pill to swallow, especially when the singer is so damn likable. However, I'll argue that every mistake the Murphys made since has been overblown by fans still hung up on that change. In the four records that followed, there was really never a cataclysmic lapse in judgement (to be hip, that "shark-jumping moment"), but to read the complaints of once-devoted listeners, it sure as hell seems like there was.

So are you tired of it yet? Maybe it's time we recognise that the Dropkick Murphys' longevity, fan-base and level of success all exist because they're quite a good band.

The Warrior's Code is the best recording the Dropkick Murphys have released since their debut. Finally, they sound like they have nothing to prove. The cloud of past glories that hung over their past work is no longer a factor. The Gang's All Here was, of course, written off by a good segment of the band's fanbase. It was the first album after the big change and the shock alone overpowers its particular strengths and weaknesses. Sing Loud, Sing Proud suffered from putting too much emphasis on the Celtic elements (having Shane MacGowan around didn't help). Blackout was the reaction record, scaling back the cultural aspects and turning up the guitars, but it lacked character. All these albums had their moments, but you couldn't get past the feeling that the Dropkick Murphys didn't feel entirely comfortable in their own skin.

That's why The Warrior's Code is such a success. Here is the first time that the Dropkick Murphys sound completely natural. There's nothing shoehorned. Neither side of the band's personality is dominant (and in fact, they're not even in conflict). This time out the Murphys are trying to please nobody but themselves, and the result is the most charming and smart record since Do Or Die.

"Sunshine Highway" is an achievement; Its chorus is the best pop melody the band has ever crafted. I know they covered "Fortunate Son" once, but if they keep writing punchy roots rock songs of this calibre, the Murphys may yet assume the role of some sort of modern day Creedence. "Citizen C.I.A." thrashes by like a good bit of 80's hardcore. Lyrically, it puts to bed any questions about the band's reaction to current U.S. foreign policy. It's paired up with a cover of Eric Bogle's "The Green Fields Of France," a war song of another type. Al Barr's sentimental turn in the ballad is wonderful and a side of him we don't often hear. "I'm Shipping Up To Boston," another lyrical find from the Guthrie archives, appears again here with the screws tightened. The booming percussion and over-the-top delivery just heightens the absurdist words. "Wicked Sensitive Crew" shouldn't be ignored because it's light-hearted. Despite its bewildering fixation with the Darkness' meat-suit wearing frontman, it addresses many lingering criticisms about the band. "Crew" sticks its tongue out at the usual misconceptions, proving the Murphys are aware of their detractors and mature enough to have some fun with them and move on.

Overall, The Warrior's Code gets the mix right. This is a dynamic record that frequently changes gears between faster punk and hardcore tracks and more subtle renditions of traditional material. While they've not departed from their established style, it seems that the Murphys' songwriting is in perfect sync with their ambition.

Fuck Johnny Damon. If I didn't already have enough reason not to listen to Tessie, I have it now. Apparently he shares gang vocals in it.

And I thought this album was the best effort in a long time, but was very over-hyped and over-rated. Sunshine Highway in my own opinion is one of the worst songs they've ever made, but there are solid moments in it, definately a step in the right direction with songs like The Auld Triangle and Citizen CIA.

And the next album will be even better if they stop stealing songs from Woody Guthrie and write some of their own music again.

keep up the good work boys. and incidentally, does anyone know where i might be able to find tickets to the st paddy's day bash in boston? world_or_bust@hotmail.com if you 've got any ideas

Killer album. Although it was a little hard to listen to the first time, the 3rd time around I figured out how good it was. A few songs here and there are 'Meh', but songs like Warrior's Code, Captain Kelly's Kitchen were more 'WHOA'.

But then there's The Auld Triangle.

One of the greatest songs I've ever heard. A spectacular hard punk cover for an old celtic song. Kudos!

What ever you consider good, this is the exact oppiste of that. I compare DKM to a dull knife. They were sharp on Do or Die, but then they just kept on stabbing away and never took the time to sharpen it. So now you have a dull boring knife with no edge to it that couldn't cut through a sheet of paper. It is really a shame because I'm a huge fan.

I have been a long fan of the Dropkick Murphys. I know much about what they can do, as do all their other true fans. But Not only am I extremely disappointed in this album, but I feel as though they are trying to bring in a new genre of fans. With songs like Sunshine highway, I see floods of rich White suburbia kids who think they have it hard, crowding the mosh pits, wondering why we are behaving so rough. I will remain behind this band no matter what, 100%, but I am truly upset by this album.

    My Score:

The Dropkick Murphy's weakest release, excluding "Blackout", except this one is good. The Murphy's, too me are better when they play fast, balls-out punk rock, not Flogging Molly-esque fiddly-diddly Irish rock. This alblum is good, but weak in comparisson to "Do or Die", or "The Gang's all Here".

    My Score:

Very disappointing, the Murphys have always been great, but they stumbled on this one. "Sunshine Highway" is an embarrassment to all long -time Dropkick Murphys fans. I certainly never complained when they replaced Mike McColgan with Al Barr, after all, when you intend to keep producing top quality street punk, what better singer than the former frontman of the Bruisers? But now I have to admit that McColgan's Street Dogs are blowing the Murphys away. The Dropkick Murphys real roots seemed to be in street punk like Cocksparrer and Sham 69 and when they choose to re-visit those roots their true strength comes through. Bagpipes were a neat novelty in rock'n'roll but it's time to back off of that stuff. AC/DC had the sense to limit it to one song even though Bon Scott had been playing the pipes for years. And besides.... bagpipes are really more Scottish than Irish anyway.

No regrets. I did like "do or die" and a few songs off "the gang's all here" but I'm reluctant to buy this.

Beers what you drink when you have all your buddies over, and you're watching the Super Bowl, pounding beers, eating chips, and trash talking to your friends who like the opposite team.

Liquor is what you drink when you want to end up in jail with your buddies because you were running around town naked, wearing only scuba diving flippers and rubbing your bare ass on the kids in local church youth group while they're having field trip at 3 in the afternoon.

You obviously can't read because Alex Rodriguez hits well with runners in scoring position, leads the league in RBI's and HR's and steals a few bases.

I admit that I'm a Yankees fan, but that doesn't make me biased or anything like you are. I can easily see that Alex Rodriguez is the best third baseman in the AL and I can also easily see that David Ortiz is the most valuable player in the American League, even if he doesn't get the votes. I like to think of myself as a baseball fan because I don't blindly follow my team.

I still think it's funny that you'd even try to make a case that Bill Mueller is better than A-Rod.

Do or Die and Gang's All Here are classics, Sing Loud... has its moments, but with a couple exceptions, Blackout! sounds like Dropkick as a Dropkick cover band -- it just doesn't have the originality or energy of the other three (or maybe it just sounds over-produced). I'll probably pick this one up if I can find it cheap.

And by the way, I'm with the guy who's played MVP Baseball too much. If I do buy this album, Tessie will never be played on my cd player. Well, not unless I'm driving through NYC for some reason. The only thing worse than bandwagon Yankee fans are dirty, smelly Mets fans who have bigger inferiority complexes than any Red Sox fan.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at 12:34 PM (EDT)

I dunno if this is actually irrational, but I kind of lost my love for the murphys when I heard the GC5 and Hudson Falcons split record. Here were two relatively unknown bands (at least to me) who seemed to have all the chops and energy that the murphys lost over the years.
Do the murphys suck because another band is better? Of course not, but it is certainly easier to compare and nitpick when there is a better example present. ...That, and I'd rather keep my money out of Hellcat/Epitaph/WhateverMajorLabel's hands and in the pockets of smaller bands.

i got this and it was easily forgetable. now i am not one to wish for the old murphy's back, but they have slowly been sliding off of my radar lately. still, i will most likely buy this.

"There's not enough baseball talk here, damn Canucks. Even though the Red Sox just whooped the shit out of the Pirates, two games to one, it should be mentioned that the Dropkick Murphy's rendition of 'Tessie' is amazing. They included it on here, I wish it would have remained native to the EP, but everyone should hear this and listen to it before their summer softball games."

I have MVP Baseball 2005 and this song is on there. I cannot honestly hear this fuckin song one more time as it seems to play constantly during the menu screens (I bet I've heard this song at least 100 times since April). Don't get me even started on the rest of the mod dance stuff on this soundtrack (the bravery, Louis XIV, Hot Hot Heat)!!

I hate when video games have soundtracks with only like 12 songs because if you play the game enough times you start to really hate these songs (sometimes you can't turn off the menu songs). Case in point, Goldfinger - Superman will forever be hated because of frequent playing of Tony Hawk Pro Skater back in the day. Tony Hawk Underground did it right though with that huge diverse soundtrack of like 75 songs. Don't really get sick of it.

    Rant over..

This CD does kick ass though

If this truly is the best album since Do or Die (it is very rare that any band is able to match their first album) then I will have to go pick this up along with the new Unseen
    -----
Yes on the DKM... this album is terrific and I think Adam's review is right on point. As for the Unseen... it's pretty good for what it is, but in perspective, DKM has written a killer, universal rock record, and the Unseen just plays gritty, street-punk with a whole lot of energy.

is there anyone else here who can't stand the original singer's voice, besides me? i wouldn't mind the first album if it weren't for the vocals.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at 9:43 AM (EDT)

First a great review of the new Unseen Album, now a sales pitch for Dropkick Murphy's. If this truly is the best album since Do or Die (it is very rare that any band is able to match their first album) then I will have to go pick this up along with the new Unseen. Either these bands decided to go back to what makes them great or these reviewers have no clue. I will go to the local record store and find out for myself.

i don't mean to be hatin on the band, but i think they push the whole "were from boston, unions, workers, labors" thing a little too much. And why don't they just kick the singer out, everytime i've seen them play the bass player sings like half of every song.

i fucking love this album and the murphys. so glad when i first heard this, because i feared that they were going to continue that slide they went on with Blackout. Green Feilds of France or Auld Lange Sang are probally my favorites on the cd, but about the whole thing kicked ass beisdes Tessie. that song is just annoying. i'd agree w/ Chinatown. Not quite as good as Sing Loud, Sing Proud, but much much better than Blackout!
