Another year, another comp. But wait, this one is significant! Other reviews have covered the significance of the release quite well, so I won’t go into it that much. It is still amazing to see how far Epitaph has come since the days of needing to put more than one song by their popular bands to move units. They truly have grown up a lot over the past decade (just talking about the comps, not the years they’ve been around) and it’s greatly appreciated. I don’t think I would buy Punk-O-Rama Vol. 1 if it came out in 2005, and this is exactly why Epitaph is so strong. They’ve committed to adapting to the broadening scope of the independent music scene and have even helped create some innovations of their own with bringing so many diverse groups under the same umbrella. Even if they’re still releasing music by bands way past their prime or era of relevance, they have brought enough new ideas to the table that we can accept one more Pennywise album.
Only a handful of these, but there are actually some surprises and some rare tracks that make it worth the $8.
Now, this is the real reason to go out and buy the compilation. This thing has twenty-one music videos pulling from all corners of the Epitaph map so there’s got to be something for everyone. The From First To Last video puts a stamp and steal on their official title of world’s douchiest band. The video is probably one of the most hilarious things I’ve seen, just because of all the douchedociery going on, from the douches playing music and being all douchetastically dramatic to the doucheular stupid imagery. Thankfully, the Youth Group video not long later is pretty awesome, plus it’s a different awesome song than what’s on the CD, so that’s a grand total of awesome from the band. Tiger Army finally puts together a good music video and it turns out fantastic; probably convinced more than a few kids to sign up with Suicide Girls. The Weakerthans video for their awesome song “The Reasons” is by far the best vid on here; going to prison never seemed so fun. Some other awesome videos come from Bad Religion, the Coup, the Matches (this song is a lot better than the one on the comp, plus the vid is sweet), and the Black Keys. The rest may just be filler depending on your taste, but overall the DVD is worth the cost alone considering what a DVD like this would cost from any other company. Epitaph also has boatloads of other music videos in the archives, so they could just grow rich by throwing thirty of them on each volume and release a dozen or so. So I glossed over most of the DVD and sampler, true, but there is an incredible amount of material contained on both. Each person will have their own new favorites, old favorites, and songs that they skip. I can’t imagine anyone actually enjoying all of the songs on here, but likewise I can’t really see anyone hating them all either. That’s what makes this worth the little money. Track listings: CD:

pennywise isnt that bad even if they sound the same or w/e and i prefer old rancid than new Rancid (it’s an old track from that time that they sucked) From First To Last - Not only is this bunch of emo-gone-metalcore douche-bags the worst thing about Epitaph, but I’m pretty sure they’re the worst thing about modern music. Completely fucking terrible. The only good thing I can say about this song is that it gives my skip forward button some rare exercise. UGH. wow, i didn't read any comments below, so sorry if i'm repeating Best Punkorama in a very long time. Props to the E for signing some crazy shit. score is for owning punk o rama vol. 1 or 2 before vol. 3 or higher came out. i'm liking all the 'fucking's being thrown into reviews lately. makes for a better read. the FFAF had em too. "everywhere i look different signs tell me what to do Honestly dude, I had no idea 'douche' could be used in such a plethora of insulting manners. Score's for the review. Really well-written and packed with useful info. Other reviewers take note. guess you never listened to the early punk-o-ramas then. they had dfl, snfu, agnostic front, etc. hardcore acts all. The "good" bands are getting too old (bouncing souls however just keep getting better). wow, not only does the reviewer not know who Some Girls are, but he puts them in the "bad" category. Epitaph is the only label that means anything anymore. They have the gonads to release whatever the fuck they want, stay independent, and treat their artists right, all despite the shitstorm of negativity coming from the punk police. I don't like everything they put out, but Sage Francis, Youth Group, Bad Religion, Motion City Soundtrack, Weakerthans, and virtually the entire Anti- roster place them shoulder to shoulder with any decent label around. The comp is decent. Various - Punk-O-Rama 10 [CD/DVD] POR 3 was great, so may good songs. The version with Undeclinable's "7 Years" on it rules the most. Let's Get Drugs by Zeke was a great song. I don't understand how Epitaph failed at promoting those guys. Lets Get Drugs sells itself. Oh yeah, best song on this comp, Dangerdoom. How awesome is that cat and mouse cartoon sample? I'll make mincemeat out of that mouse...indeed. Matchbook Romance- Not at all good. I just didn't think they were so noticably bad as to make comment. They really are just completely mediocre so I had nothing to say and no room to say it. Sweet comp, Epitaph is the sherriff of ballsville. This comp is unbearable. Why is it called punk-o-rama, if 80% of the bands on it has nothing to do with punk? Fuck Epitaph, fuck hip hop, fuck metal. Score is for use of the word 'emolishious', and douche and all of its variations. Haha. not getting this , i'm more into punk. the reviewer says he didn't dig smash.......that was one of the only offspring cds that i thought was decent. Sucks because they put the same Horrorpops video on 2 comps in row. I hate compilations. They are never evenly mixed. It seems that epitaph is lagging when it comes to new punk acts. The new stuff their signing/releasing thats indie and hip hop is really good, but hardly any of their newer punk bands are above mediocre. I disagree with the matches track being bad, same with This Is Me Smiling, and there was no mention of the live Bouncing Souls, which is sick as well. I don't think this is as good as the POR haydays of 4-6, but it aint bad and gotta love the price I'm going to have to agree, having matchbook romance as a 'good' and some girls as a 'bad' just doesnt make sense. Some girls is one of the best bands to sign to that label in a long time. Vaq your opinion became void when you mentioned Matchbook Romance as being one of the good things from this release. This was OK, about what I expected it to be. I really liked the Rancid song, same with the Offspring song. The Bad Religon and NOFX songs were good too. The Roger Miret song was really good, but that's probably because it's the only song on here that has the traditional "punk" sound (in my opinion). But they are really gonna have to rename these comps if they keep putting emo, hip-hop, and hardcore songs on them. I appreciate the diversity, but "punk-o-rama" isn't really appropriate anymore. you are saying this comp is shit yet you bought it for a matchbook romance video. ironic. This release absolutely wasted my money You're right, converge aren't no Ataris. More Ataris reviews please!! Cal Ripken Jr had over 400 hrs and over 3,000 hits. I don't really think he was a hack the Matches don't sound anything like old Bouncing Souls. the singer's voice sounds a little like Greg, but that's it. Converge is the best modern hardcore group? wow, i just realized that the first four tracks are possibly the worst way to start a "punk" comp. i don't count sage francis in there, because that's actual good music. but man, those first four tracks.....not cool. Great review. But you're dead wrong about the Matches. Just think "early Bouncing Souls with better production" and you're there. or maybe they "are". I think Scatter the Ashes is cool. score is for mf doom and anything he is related to. Youth Group - Where the hell did this band come from? Epitaph sure didn’t promote them very well, but it’s a good thing they got the best song from their album AND a video on this release. People better go out and start buying this shit. You’ll dig it if you like the Weakerthans, but that also begs the question: Where’s my unreleased Weakerthans?! i'm having trouble deciding if From First To Last wants to be: "Ride the Wings of Pestilence" I've always had a soft spot for DKM, but if that music video has all kinds of Red Sox footage in it, I'm gonna be pissed. Yes, I know the history of the song, and the history of your shitty, racist and crybaby team, so don't feed me your rhetoric. you still into simple plan jones? wow this is bad like bad, bad, good, bad bad. If only I could use the word douche so well! Mission From God is a great song. Man oh man, I hope the Offspring can write an album's worth of that kind of stuff. No more gimmicky singles shit, please. I downloaded their new song Can't Repeat, and it's pretty cool; reminiscent of Social Distortion. the offspring song is great. it's a song that didn't make it on ignition The Offspring track makes me reminisce on the good times I enjoyed this band during my teen years. why does tony get to fuck hot bitches all the time? the guy's a walking potatoe. like it or hate it- this is me smiling is a great band name. The matches are an awesome band live and I had the privelage of seeing them play the song shoot me in the smile numerous times, I expected it to be an amazing sounding song when recorded, but its not, it needs to be rerecorded the way they play it live, and they need to get someone to re produce it because it just sounds like shit right now. The dvd looks decent. I thought it would only have like 10 vids .. i might get this after all i don't like death by stereo. i also don't really like that sage cd at all. there's a couple good songs but most of them are corny. 'gunz yo' is a good song, though. it's so fucking ridiculous that they didn't put a song from the new death by stereo on here. so many shitty bands on that label that they could have left off, yet they choose to leave one of their best bands off. i sure hope it was a mistake, because if it wasn't, then somebody at epitaph needs to get their ass handed to them. This shit get's half a star because they put the worst track from Sage's new album. -I actually like that FFTL B-side on the CD portion, but their song and playing footage in the video is absolutely horrendous. this shit gets a half star because they didnt put a track from the new death by stereo album |
