I was anxiously awaiting this show for 3 months. I have been a fan of Alkaline Trio since I first got into them. Although the band's last couple of albums were subpar compared to their originals on Asian Man (don't get me wrong, Good Mourning and Crimson are still VERY good) and I was iffy about the opening acts, I figured that this would be a good show to check out.

Starting things off were Thieves Like Us. This band featered a lady guitarist/vocalist (good on the former, horrible on the latter), an annoying but genuine guiatrist, a chill basist, and a very cocky, but talented, drummer. The band had a grunge feel and were kind of lame.

After a twenty-minute intermission, up came Rufio while the crowd chanted the infamous line from "Hook." I was never really interested in this band due to the fact that on record they sound very whiny. Live, however, I was extremely impressed. From the opening riffs of "Out Of Control," the crowd busted out three mosh pits. Other notable songs that I can remember were "White Lights" and "Science Fiction." This definitely made me think of buying their new album when it hits the stores next week.

Three brawls and thirty minutes later (to all people that go to concerts just to fight, Fuck Off!) Alkaline Trio hit the stage while the piano from "Time To Waste" was playing. Once the piano gave way to guitar, the hugest mosh pit I have seen since Bad Religion opened up. They followed with two more songs off of Crimson, which made me think that this was going to be a showcase of their newer material. But afterwards they devoted the song "My Litttle Needle" to all that owned Godddamit, and "Private Eye" for all their Norfolk fans. They still didn't play "San Francisco," "Goodbye Forever," "Armegeddon," "Maybe I'll Catch Fire," or "All On Black," but I am very hard to please. Matt Skiba for once diddn't miss a note and Dan sounded wonderful as they -- as always -- split the play list between the two. The set list was as follows:
From oldest to newest

  • Nose Over Tail
  • Clavicle
  • My Little Needle
  • Southern Rock
  • Radio
  • Private Eye
  • This Could Be Love
  • Emma (extremely good live)
  • If We Never Go Inside
  • Sadie
  • Time To Waste
  • The Poison
  • Burn
  • Mercy Me
  • Settle For Satin
  • Fall Victim
  • I Was A Prayer
  • Back To Hell
Encore:
  • 97
  • Blue In The Face (full band)
If this show did anything for me, it made me put Goddamnit back in my stereo. For that I say thanks Alkaline Trio, come back soon!

The crimson tour was the third alkaline trio show i saw in montreal (saw my fourth one just a few days ago :D ). The show had very poor sound (Club Soda) but it was still enjoyable. There are many people who are complaining about how many Crimson songs there was. This makes sense as the tour was pretty much a promo of the album which had just came out. I found there was a good selection of older songs as well, its just i realised that they were obviously going to play songs off the newest album. For those who were dissapointed though, the latest concert was a blast, best trio show ever.Goddamnit is a great album.

This is the reviewer. Sorry about the horrible review, i do admit it sucked. I will never again write anything on 3 days of no sleep.

"Have they ever played "She Took Him To The Lake" live?"
I've seen them play it. I don't remember what show, but I think it was 2-3 years back.

"Did anyone see Dillinger 4 at Fuck Yeah fest last weekend in LA? Fuckin GENIUS. Sweet Jesus, I'm born again!"
Damn I wanted to go to that fest but it didn't work out.

Reel Big Fish and Catch 22 on the 17th. Beat that.

The Trio needs to release another collection cd with all of their comp/b sides/7" songs, then make an acoustic "greatest hits" and call it a day.

    My Score:

This review was awful. Both opening bands were fucking garbage, Dan hit at least 3 sour ass bass notes, Skiba can't sing 'cause he's coked up, and the last song wasn't blue in the face, it was a meddly of 3 or 4 songs strung together starting out with Blue In The Face. They also played Jaked on Green Beers, but that is really irrelavent as this review makes me completely indifferent towards wanting to see them anymore.

ya what about "I was iffy about the opening acts, I figured that this would be a good show to check out."
"I have been into Alkaline Trio since i was a big fan 3 years before i heard of em."

"And what's the deal with making Dan, who's responsible for only 25% of their songs, play 50% of their show playlist? I like them both, but shouldn't their live show be commensurate with their catalog (i.e. Dan only playing 30% of their songs)? Matt needs to stop being so lazy."

Probably because Matt can't sing! You can do a lot in the studio, ya know...............

Posted by Anchors on 2005-07-07 04:15:24

Oh and I checked out that band, pretty solid stuff. Maybe I'll get a chance to see them when I'm in Miami.

Posted by Anchors on 2005-07-07 04:09:02

Was that WTPY show in Miami? The one with Tunes For Bears To Dance To? I think my cousin went to that, I'll have to ask him how it was.

And you're going to be missing out on that Off Minor show dude, shits going to be tight.

    My Score:

I went to the first Philly show at the TLA and left disappointed. It was only partly Alk3's fault though; there were equipment/sound problems throughout. Specifically, Matt's guitar was so low, you couldn't hear a single note for the first three songs. Even when they rectified it, it still was hard to hear. Secondly, Dan's mike constantly went in and out. He'd be singing fine, then all of the sudden you'd hear no vocals but still see him singing on stage. It was like the opposite of what happened to Ashlee Simpson on SNL.

My other problem was their setlist. From past experience, I knew they'd never play my favorite old songs. All I wanted from the new album was "Dethbed" and "Your Neck." They played neither. And what's the deal with making Dan, who's responsible for only 25% of their songs, play 50% of their show playlist? I like them both, but shouldn't their live show be commensurate with their catalog (i.e. Dan only playing 30% of their songs)? Matt needs to stop being so lazy.

Posted by Anchors on 2005-07-07 00:56:43

    I'll top that.

In two weeks, I'm seeing Off Minor and Beneath Low Flying Planes.

    My Score:

First off, I'm not really a fan of their music, but I am a fan of their reviews on pn.org. Give yourself a round of applause.

The only complaint about this band and the reviews is how many people actually go to alk3 shows and pull out a pen and paper and writes down each damn song that they played and what order. Jesus Christ!!!! Is this like a cult like the dead heads (yes, some of which are still around unfortunately) where you have to write their songs down.

I counted about 7/8 people that mentioned songs that were/weren't played. I don't know, maybe all those people are waiting for the ULTIMATE ALK3 SHOW OF ALL TIME!!!

Don't mean to bust your bubble people, but have fun waiting cuz it's never gonna happen.

I heard a couple of their songs and wasn't impressed, but the reviews are good and something funny usually happens,,,,,,well, not w/ this review.....score is for the biotches who like to fight.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at 12:10 PM (EDT)

This is a rare example of a review inadvertantly making me laugh out loud. Although my first review was also shitty, and I haven't progressed much, so I shouldn't really say anything...

Saw them in Milwaukee, the show was ok but whats worse is that my friends went to the show in chicago and they played the same set verbatim! I lost a lot of respect for this band.

I would have liked to hear "Warbrain" and "Jaked on Green Beers".

    My Score:

The Chicago show was pretty poor. Why? Well, i saw them the night before in Milwaukee and they played the EXACT same set-list as the night before. They couldn't even change up the set-list for their freakin' hometown.

It was nice to see My Little Needle and Jaked on Green Beers but the number of Crimson songs was mind numbing. Those two shows may very well be the last time i ever see them live again.... sad.

Score is for Theives Like Us.
Even if you disregard the awesome bands these people have been in
    Erika (F-Minus)
    Joe (F-Minus)
Todd (Rise Against, Killing Tree, Falcon, and some more)
they were a pretty good rock band.
Once they release something, I'm definitely buying it.

I just got the Asian Man Records DVD and it reminded me of how awesome Alkaline Trio used to be before all the eyeliner and goth lyrics.

Just because they didn't play the one song that they've probably got sick of playing after all these years doesn't mean that it was a horrible setlist.

Lack of Radio wasnt the only thing to ruin the setlist, but a major one. They didnt play much older stuff. I believe Crawl was the only thing played off From Here To Infirmy and Matbe I'll Catch Fire was the only song of off Maybe I'll Catch Fire. Skeiba was horribly off, then again I can't even remember the last time i saw them live where he sounded good (maybe in the mid to late 90s).

"Score is for Chicago show. Yes they did play Warbrain, but no Radio. Worst setlist ever"

Just because they didn't play the one song that they've probably got sick of playing after all these years doesn't mean that it was a horrible setlist. I was at the Chicago show and I thought they did a great job of mixing the older stuff and still playing a lot of stuff off of Crimson. I didn't really miss Radio at all seeing that they almost always play it. Cooking Wine and My Little Needle were definately my favorites from the set.

i have never been a fan of them since i was born

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at 2:21 PM (EDT)

your setlist is a little off

the encore included nose over tail and as an interlude they did the ending of blue in the face into 97.
also they didnt play southern rock. they did play jaked on green beers though which was awesome.

otherwise, it was a great show

to the guy who asked 'why aren't they playing bleed?" that song is actually called 'burn' and they are playing it every show....

also, i have heard 'she took him' live...i believe it was at Laga in pittsburgh around 2001 or 2002...(def. post-infirmiry..not sure if 'mourning' was out yet...i think it was pre-good mourning)

Did the openers only play for 15 minutes in Norfolk? They did up here. I have never been a fan of Rufio either because i also thought their CDs were whiney but the five songs they played during this show were impressive.

They aren't playing bleed of the new cd? fuck, i really like that song, the bridge is orgasmatastic, i just picture a huge fucking sing along going "WE ARE ANXIOUSLY WAAITIING.. LIKE HELL..." and so on, fuck.

    My Score:

I saw them at the first philly show. They played:

    Time To Waste
    Poison
    Mercy Me
    Maybe I'll Catch Fire
    Warbrain
    Burn
    Sadie
    Settle for Satin
    Jaked on Green Beers
    I was a Prayer
    Smoke
    My Little Needle
    Emma
    Crawl
    Back to Hell
    Clavicle
    Nose Over Tail

    Cringe
    This Could Be Love

I think this is a pretty good list, but its nice to see they play different stuff at different shows. Cringe wasn;t on the setlist for this show, your neck was, but they skipped it.

man that set list is way fucking better than the chicago show. they played something ridiculous like 9 or 10 Crimson songs and definitely no radio, fall victim, private eye, if we never go inside or 97. you are a lucky mofo

Posted by Anchors on 2005-07-05 01:20:30

"Cringe" is the best song off that record, if you ask me, and that's saying something.

Though, I still hold a certain affinity for "As You Were," because it's the first song of theirs I had ever heard.

Posted by maverick on 2005-07-05 01:14:44

Four songs off of Goddamnit, and none of them were "Cringe" -- that's mighty impressive, considering that was pretty much the only song that band consistently played off that record for the past few years. The sed could've used a little less Crimson (maybe only 4 songs) and a little more of the other three records, but overall, looks like the band are back on track, live performance-wise.
