| Pixies / Weezer / the Frayslive in Toronto2005 live show Review by: LevitateMe See others by this writer http://www.pixiesmusic.com/ (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on July 22nd 2005
On a rather mild July day in the more-crowded-than-usual city of Toronto, I got a chance to see my favorite band, yet again, for the fourth time in nine months. This is quite cool being that just a year and a half ago I thought I would never get the chance to see them.
After a short wait, Frank Black, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago, and David Lovering took the stage. Kim said a quick "hey" and then they went right into "Velouria." I found the fact that they chose this song to open with particularly hilarious, as it's basically the template for every Weezer song. They also played new addition to the sets of the summer tour "Stormy Weather," which sounded a lot better than the already great album version. There was a great stretch in the early-to-middle part of the set that included especially powerful versions of "Bone Machine," "Tame," "Caribou," and "Crackity Jones." After "Crackity Jones," Kim remarked "sorry my fingers can't move that fast anymore," but it sounded great to me. One thing I noticed was that many of the Weezer fans, while seeming to enjoy the performance, were not moving around very much. I'm sure this made me in all my rocking-out glory easier for the security to spot when they kicked me back to my seat immediately after "Allison." My trek back up to the first level was accompanied by "Debaser." After this, Frank picked up his accoustic for the final stretch. The two biggest highlights of the show were included in this, one being "La La Love You," which was so much fun, and the other being "Wave Of Mutilation (UK Surf)" with alternating vocal lines between Frank and Kim. Frank did cut Kim off a couple times and at the end she said "hey, you were stealing my lines!" Aww, she's so cute. The end of the show was probably the most energetic part and included such greats as "Here Comes Your Man," "Nimrod's Son," "Vamos," and "Where Is My Mind." They came back to play "Gigantic" for the encore and finished with each band member saying goodnight to the others during the usually instrumental ending of that song; "Goodnight Kimmy." "Goodnight Charles." As this was going on, fireworks began going off in another section of the park; this incited cheers from the crowd and I thought it was a very fitting end to an excellent performance. The Pixies are one of the best live bands on the planet. If you haven't seen them, go see them. If you have seen them, go see them again. Set List:

First of all, who allowed the Fray to even be there. What a waste of time that was. If man is 5.....then this concert was worth like 10 stars! yay! Go Fray, Go Weezer, and especially Go Go Go Pixies yaaa. weezer stole the show. this reveiwer sounds a little bummer that the pixies have been playing the same set list for the past 14 months. not really they only play one song out of trompe le monde ? that sucks. good review bud. that jesus freak who never heard of god comparison to weezers fans was reall funny. you wore the shirt of the band you were gonna see? This review is god awful. Shoot this person. that's a stunning retort, levitate. kudos. you really have terrible opinions about everything i wouldnt go see the pixies, not because theyre old farts or anything, but just because they sucked. they sucked in '88. 17 years have done nothing to lessen the magnitude of their suckiness. Awesome, they played Crackity Jones. "Why does everyone say Weezer sucks live? I thought they were awesome when I saw them at Coachella." If you're not going to see the Pixies just because "they're a bunch of old farts" or some lame shit like that then that's all your loss. they'll probably rise because of our reputations hey, we came to the same conclusion about weezer, and it was posted in the same group of reviews...i bet tickets and album sales of weezer drop like a brick this coming week, because of us i dont like the new weezer cd but it shouldnt be surprising that they are playing sets that are composed of songs mostly from make believe. You're missing out then. They're as good as ever. I like the Pixies and all but I have absolutely no interest in see a bunch of oldies do arena shows. Makes me glad Kurt isn't around anymore. Man I'd hate to have to suffer through a set of Weezer just to see the Pixies. yeah that score was supposed to be 5 yellow stars. the new weezer allbum is probably one of the worst albums of the year. What a setlist the Pixies had! Saterday, i shall be seeing these bands. I love the Pixies!! only 2 songs from pinkerton that's saddens me I've seen Weezer twice and the Pixies once (last month) and I think they're essentially the same live-- they faithfully reproduce their music live, with little to no improvisation, stage banter, or even acknowledging the audience exists. That said, I love the Pixies, because I love them, and would see the show again. I'm sure a dedicated Weezer fan would say the same (but I wouldn't...) I didn't see the show, and although my top favorite bands are (in order) Weezer, Pixies, and the Eels/Modest Mouse...I completely agree with you on that. Weezer does suck live (ever since 2000), and Pixies still are the best show I've ever seen (twice). I was in shock when I heard that Pixies would be "opening" for Weezer at two of the three shows they had together. Why does everyone say Weezer sucks live? I thought they were awesome when I saw them at Coachella. oh so you wore a pixies shirt to a pixies show The Pixies...Weezer...The Pixies...Weezer...someone help me out here. |
